Trying to get used to the Mac
Hey,
I just got my Mac Pro in the mail today and am making the switch from a PC. I guess I have kind of a newbie question to ask. I downloaded Firefox for the mac and it downloaded as a .dmg file and when I open it the program does not really install anywhere on the hard drive. It makes an icon on the desktop and I can use firefox but I wanna have firefox just on the dock and no icon on the desktop. If I delete the icon that is on the desktop or delete the .dmg file when I click on the firfox button on the dock a ? comes up over it and it wont launch.
Sorry for the newb question. Love the Mac Pro so far and I hope someone can help me.
Thanks
One thing that's great about the Mac is that applications are more tangible. What I mean is: there's usually no "wizard" and install voodoo like on the PC and most applications can be "installed" (really just copied) by just dragging them from a disk image (.dmg) or unzipped folder to your applications folder in the finder window. They can also be uninstalled by dropping them in the trash. This isn't true for every application (Adobe and other complex apps use wizards) but most of them are like this. The rule of thumb is that if it's just the application you can drag it over; if it's called "(something) Installer" you probably need to double click it to run the install wizard.
Either way, wizard or not, one other difference is that CDs and disks don't autorun when inserted or mounted on the Mac. You'll have to double-click the CD/disk and either drag + drop or double-click.
Remember that the dock is a shortcut so you'll want to first put Firefox in your applications folder and then drag it to your dock. Dragging icons to your dock makes a connection to them as a shortcut. So...
1. double-click the dmg
2. open the resulting virtual disk and drag FireFox to your applications folder
3. open the applications folder
4. drag FireFox to your dock
5. click FireFox in your dock to launch

Hello kc9agz,
Thank you for contacting Mozilla Support. Did you back up your bookmarks before you moved to the new computer? You can find more information about backing up and restoring bookmarks in this article.

There are a number of extremly dubious sites which claim to offer Drivers for common Hardware, but actually are phishing for identies and credit card numbers and candidates to join a bot-net.
Make absolutely certain you load drivers ONLY from the manufacturer's web site. -
I have updated my mac book pro and am trying to get icloud and the new lion version. The lion version will not download and my biggest problem is finding icloud on my system preference. Can anyone help me?
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Connecting your MacBook Pro and your MacBook Air will be the fastest way, but you have to spend money on cables and adapters (also, your MacBook Pro doesn't support Thunderbolt).
As you have a Time Capsule, one thing you can do is to start your MacBook Pro and make a Time Machine backup. Then, turn on your MacBook Air and set it up. Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so select the option to restore the backup from the Time Capsule and be patient. This can take a lot of time if you have to migrate a lot of files -
I have an external hard drive that was formatted by a PC and has files and directories copied to it etc. I want to use it on my IMAC for backup. I see it on my my IMAC . I can open files etc. But I can't seem to write to it nor can I delete current content. I don't care if I lose current content. How do I initialize it for use with the MAC?
You can't write to it because it's formatted as NTFS which OS X will read but not write to. If you want to continue using the drive with both a PC and OS X you will need to download and install NTFS-3G so you can then write to it from your Mac. You can get NTFS-3G at:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24481/ntfs-3g
If you want to use the drive exclusively with your Mac then move the data off it and reformat it in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utilities) as Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) -
Can anyone tell me how to find what OS I'm using on the Mac?
Tiger or Leopard?
Also, how do I update from 10.6.8 to the latest version?Go to the Apple menu and select "About This Mac". You will get a window similar to this one -
You current OS X version number will be shown as I've marked.
OS X 10.4.x is Tiger, 10.5.x is Leopard, 10.6.x is Snow Leopard, 10.7.x is Lion, and 10.8.x is Mountain Lion.
Whether or not you can go to the latest OS X version depends upon your hardware -
You will need to purchase the retail set for the OS X version you want; there is no pint in getting and installing any intermediate versions. Once the retail version has been installed, you can update it to the latest release for that version via download updater. -
I can't download anything on the Mac App store. It says This Apple ID cannot be used for the Mac App Store.
I went into settings, iTunes & App Store and tapped on my appleID, then signed out. I went back into the App Store on my phone and tried to download the app and then signed in again, and it worked!

I have a Macbook Pro with OS 10.5.8. I wish to get a new external HD. The HD packaging seems to indicate that an OS of 10.6 is required.
Questions:
1: Can I reliably use a new external HD requiring 10.6 on my 10.5.8?
2. Does anything have to been changed/altered on either the HD or the laptop to make such a HD work?
3. The HD would initially be used to transfer movies from another external HD, via a PC with WIndows 7, onto the new HD. This would be a one-time event simply to get movies from a friend's HD. Will the new HD be affected in anyway with having its first contact with a PC rather than my Mac which it ultimately will be used with?
I am not a wizard with technology.
Please advise.
Thank you.You need to upgrade OS X on your computer. The drive will have to properly formatted for a PC but be usable on a Mac. So the drive must be prepared as follows:
Drive Partition and Format
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to MBR then click on the OK button. Set the format type to MSDOS. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
Snow Leopard General Requirements
1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
2. 1GB of memory
3. 5GB of available disk space
4. DVD drive for installation
5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
fees may apply.
6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
terms apply.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
Lion System Requirements
1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
or Xeon processor
2. 2GB of memory
3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
4. 7GB of available space
5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
Model Identifier 5,1 or later
3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.

I have a Macbook Pro that has Windows loaded. I use that most often and it opens immediately upon opening the computer. I can't remember how to get back to the Mac side of the computer and want to begin to use it as well. Can anyone help me remember the buttons to push ?
Thank youHold down the Option key when starting up, or restarting. You'll be presented with the Startup Manager, which is a simple graphic of the drives you can boot to. Double click the drive which has OS X on it. Once in OS X, go to the System Preferences and click on Startup Disk. Choose the drive you always want the Mac to boot to first.
