Trying to give remote user FTP access to external HDD connected to my iMac

This gets a little complicated, so bear with me.
I have an external hard drive connected via FireWire to my iMac. I have a remote user that I want to be able to access this hard drive via FTP.
Here's what I've done so far:
1) I've given the iMac a static IP on the local network.
2) I've forwarded port 21 to said IP address via my Airport Extreme.
3) I've given the user her own account on my iMac.
4) I've turned on file sharing in System Preferences, and the user has read & write permissions. I've also enabled FTP access to the iMac.
5) I've added the external drive to the Shared Folders list, and given the user read & write permissions.
When the user attempts to FTP into my iMac, she is prompted for a user name and password. She authenticates and is redirected to her home folder on my iMac. She can read and write to this folder, but the external drive is nowhere to be found.
I'm sure I've just missed a small detail. Does anyone have any ideas?

I came up with a work around, if anyone is interested.
In user accounts system preferences, I edited advanced options for the user I want to give access to. I changed the location of her home directory to the external hard drive. Now every time she logs in, she's directed straight to the external.

  • Access USB external HDD connected to Airport Extreme

    Hi.
Today I configured "Back to my Mac" and I'm having a little issue with the external HDD that is connected to the Airport.
Let me explain the configuration: Airport Extreme (latest version) configured with Back to My Mac option, with an external HDD connected using USB port (The HDD is externanly powered). iMac computer with OSX Mavericks wireless connected, configured with iCloud Account and Back to My Mac with screen sharing).
I can access the shared screen and control the iMac from my Macbook Air outside my home network.
The issue is when I try to access the "network HDD" because I can connect using the right user but Finder windows never shows the HDD content. I have to disconect and reconnect to the external HDD to be able to see the files (If I have 3 windows and want to access the HDD on each of the 3 windows, I have to disconnect and reconnect 3 times).
    Question:
There is any way to access the external HDD and be able to see its content using the configuration mentioned? The disconnect and reconnect procedure for each window is normal? There is a better configuration I can apply?. Just as information, from my MacBook Im able to see perfect the HDD content from outside my home network.
I know the question is a little bit confusing, but if you need any additional info please let me know.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
is it possible to give a user read access to an SAP table but to restrict it to a subset of columns?
    Thanks,
    Digesh

    Hi Digesh,
If your requirement is to restrict the excess to specific rows it is possible to use S_TABU_LIN, but it works only for table which contains org units, like plant, company code, etc.
Please search for S_TABU_LIN if this is your requirement.
    Otherwise please follow Alex's suggestion.

  • Is there a way for my macbook air (running Lion) to access an external hard drive on my Imac (running snow leopard) specifically for Iphoto and itunes?

Is there a way for my macbook air (running Lion 10.7.2) to access an external hard drive on my Imac (running snow leopard 10.6.8) specifically for Iphoto and itunes?

Yes. For those two applications specifically there is sharing. This presumes both computers are on and connected to the same network.
In iPhoto, enable sharing by (on the iMac) going to the iPhoto menu > Preferences > Sharing > check Share my photos. You can either share the entire library or only selected albums. Now on your MacBook Air, in iPhoto, go to the same preference pane and select Look for shared photos.
iTunes has something similar. In the iTunes menu > Preferences > Sharing > check Share my library on my local network. On the other computer, look in the left column for SHARED and select the iMac. You can now play that music on the MacBook Air.
There are other ways to share files but for those two applications this is the simplest way.
    Best of luck.

tried to move the itune folder to an external hdd,  (precisely as written above) but after "consolidating, happens nothing

That's because too many people confuse moving media folder with moving the library properly.
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168

  • I am trying to get an answer to whether or not I can successfully use Time Machine with an external HDD connected to an airport extreme?  Some forums say yes, some say no.

I am trying to get an answer to whether or not I can successfuly use Time Machine with an external HDD connected to an airport extreme.  Some forums say yes, some say no.  I'm also curious about formatting the hard drive to work both on my wife's MacBook Pro and my PC.  Any help would definitely be appreciated.

You may be going on a recollection, that I share, that at one time Apple stated this would be possible:
In fact, Apple’s Time Machine Web page touted this very capability as recently as last Tuesday, as you can see from Google’s October 16 cache of the page
Effortless meets wireless. With a hard disk connected to your AirPort Extreme Base Station, all the Macs in your house can use Time Machine to back up wirelessly. Simply select your AirPort Disk as the backup disk for each computer and the whole family can enjoy the benefits of Time Machine.
But if you look at the current Time Machine page on Apple’s Web site, that text is nowhere to be found.
That was a long time ago, it has never been officially implemented, and at present they specifically say it cannot be done.
In summary, it may work, but probably won't, and even if it does it may not be reliable.

  • How can i give multiple users admin access?

I would like to give another user on my macbook pro admin access, so that they can install programs without having to ask me for the password each time. I do not want the password to be the same for my profile, because I don't want them getting into my account. So is it possible to have a separate password for admin use only? This might be a dumb question and I know their is probably a simple way to do this, but I'm new to macs so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Convert a standard user to an administrator
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
Click the lock icon  to unlock it, then enter an administrator name and password.
Select a standard user or managed user in the list of users, then select “Allow user to administer this computer.”

  • How do I give third party ftp access?

I have a client who has a "friend" who is an IT guy. He wants FTP access to work on his site's SEO. I created it in Muse with meta-tags on each page. Do I just grant him admin rights as a user in BC?

    Hi,
Simply create an admin account for this user from within the admin console via Site Settings > Admin Users. Ensure the role assigned to this user has the permission 'Can use SFTP & File Manager' selected.
For information on how to connect via sFTP, please refer to the following article: kb.worldsecuresystems.com/kb/connecting-your-site-using-ftp.html.

  • E3000 FTP access question/using Cisco connect after router setup

I have two questions about my E3000 router.
    1. If I have already set up my router using the default web address, if I use the Cisco connect software, do I gain any benefit or am I opening up a can of worms? I would like to change my server name and default admin user name stuff, but I don't want to screw with any settings I have. I will be updating my firmware in a day or so, so should I use the software then, or just go about it the way I have already?
    2. I have enables FTP access for my USB drive, but I am unsure how to access it from a remote computer. I know using ftp://xxx.xxx.x.x gets me to my Index while connected to my network, but how do I access this off my network? I want to give our parents and family access to pictures, but I''m not sure of the exact address to use. I have looked in the set-up manual, and searched Google and this site, and have found nothing.
Thank you in advance for your help!
    Dan

If you have configured your Router using the Cisco Connect software, then you it secure your wireless network with an password. If you have any firewall and antivurs software on your router then it will protect your computers against worms.
To use the FTP feature of your router you need to enable ftp login on your router, which you will find under the storage tab of your router.

  • FRUSTRATED! Cannot access Seagate external HDD - message is "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"

I get the message "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" when trying to access my Seagate external HDD.
Disk Utility lists both the Seagate drive and volume but all options (verify disk, repair disk) are greyed out.
It says the volume is unmounted and Windows_FAT_32.
(The external HDD used to be formatted for NTFS, but when I moved across to Apple last year, I reformatted to FAT32).
I haven't accessed the drive for a few months but the last time I did, it worked fine.
I'm running OS X 10.9.5 on MBA bought last year.
I've spent 2 hours trawling through blogs/mac forums/apple support and nearly bought Disk Warrior out of frustration, but surely there must be a simpler solution?
I don't think I'm dealing with a corrupt drive, just an inaccessible one!
Any help greatly appreciated, even if it is to pay the $$$ for DW...!
    Thanks, Jay

  • Cannot access my external HDD

    Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the forum, but if someone could help me with this I would be so grateful. A couple of days ago, I was working with my external HDD (Western Digital, 250GB, USB 2.0), when my Macbook (running OS 10.5.6) froze and restarted. Normally I can access the HDD through the orange icon that appears on my Desktop and in Finder, but it is no longer there.
I checked Disk Utility, System Profiler, and USB Prober - and they all appear to recognize a Mass Storage Device. In Disk Utility, I am not able to "mount" but when I click "eject" I get the following message: "Eject Failed. The disk “WDC WD25 00JB-00GVA0 Media” could not be unmounted. Make sure that all applications and files are closed on this disk." As far as I know, I'm not using anything from this drive.
I have checked the /Volumes/ folder, and there is nothing but the main HDD of my Macbook.
I have a lot of data on this drive that I really need, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Other things that I have tried:
[1] lsof +D /Volumes/ExternalHD could not find my HDD
[2] Tried a new enclosure to rule out faulty wiring, but I get the same results
[3] Also of note, I cannot click "repair disk" in Disk Utility, because it is greyed-out
[4] I have tried using Disk Warrior and Data Rescue II, but they both freeze when my external HDD is running

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Access permissions on HDD connected to Airport

I have a new Airport Extreme wirelessly connected to my network. I have two HDD connected to the Airport, one for Time Machine, the other for my iTunes library. No problem with the HDD used for Time Machine, but on the other HDD the access permissions keep resetting to 'Everyone' being given no access. When I go in and change the permissions, close the information box and open it up again it has reverted back to no access. If I reboot the laptop it will normally fix this, be fine for a bit and then happen again.
Any ideas why the access permissions keep changing and what I can do to stop it happening?

Unfortunately, Apple did not leave much room for setting user permissions for AirPort Disks. As you know, you can choose from one of three methods, but regardless of which method you choose, you cannot set permissions individually for folders/files on a drive, nor set them differently on either a different partition on the same drive or across multiple drives attached to a USB hub.
What you are experiencing is possibly a shortcoming with the AirPort's file sharing feature. Even with the "With Accounts" option, there is inconsistency between partition vs. accounts. With multiple partitions, formatted with HFS+, you do not have any control on where the user permissions account folder ends up. Also, the location of this folder seems to change arbitrarily so that even something as simply restarting the base station will change which partition has this folder and subsequent permissions ... with the other drive getting the "Everyone" permissions ... like you are experiencing.

  • ITunes Library access via external HDD w/ AirPort Extreme

Ok wizards...  I've read a number of posts, but can't seem to pull together the answer to my question and hoping someone's able to push me in the right direction.
I've got a Windows 7 PC with my iTunes library stored on an external HDD due to it's size.  My PC is often not at home (i travel for work a lot) and would like to have my library available to my family via my Apple TV when i'm not there.  So... I'm contemplating buying an AirPort Extreme and connecting the HDD.  I have read that the HDD must be formatted to FAT32 for it to function w/ the AirPort extreme (seemingly an arduous step, but surmountable) but can't seem to find a clear answer to the question:
Will I be able to access my Library via the Apple TV via this method?  Obviously any tips / tricks would be greatly appreciated and thanks (in advance) for anyone who can help!

No, at least not directly. You would still need an iTunes "server" to stream the iTunes media to the Apple TV. Typically a iTunes server would be a Mac or PC computer running iTunes.

  • Cannot access the external HDD PX1396E

Just bought this external hard drive, 1TB.
I plug it in and Windows (xp) recognizes it and installs the drivers, or something.
When I click on it to explore it, it says please insert disk into drive X.
I've connected it to 3 different computers and same problem.
I've tried looking for specific drivers but there don't seem to be any, not even in the toshiba website.
    What's up, anyone know?
    Thanks.

    Mr,
I think you should go to the palce where you back to the place where you bought the external HDD, because it's not your computer who has the problem. If your computer was diffictueus then the External HDD should work with the other computers.
So it's a hardware problem with the external, may be it's Broken. So go and change it.
that's all what I can Say.
