Trying to go wireless with my iMac DV/SE (graphite one)

I have an iMac DV/SE (graphite)with OS 10.2 that I am trying to go wireless with. I am going to get a broadband cable internet connection but need to know what would be best. My options are to buy an airport card (not extreme) and adaptor (which would cost over $200 on macwireless.com) or I could buy a macwireless 11g ethernet bridge ($150). Which is better?
Also, if I were to get the bridge, is it compatable with airport express (w/airtunes)? Or would I need a different router (i.e. macwireless 11 g wireless router with speed 54 mbps). I am quite clueless.
Thank you in advance for any help/suggestions.
Kathleen

Hello Kathleen and welcome to the discussions.
The cheapest way to go wireless would be to use a linksys wrt54g wireless router connected to your cable modem. Then use a linksys wireless bridge connected to your imac.
Also, if I were to get the bridge, is it compatable with airport express (w/airtunes)? Or would I need a different router (i.e. macwireless 11 g wireless router with speed 54 mbps). I am quite clueless.
Wireless devices conform to standards. Therefore a wireless bridge that is 11g can connect to another wireless device that also uses 11g. Most devices are backward compatible and also support 802.11b devices.
So you could use an airport express or base station connected to your cable modem and then use wireless bridge to connect to the airport express.

  • Trying to connect wirelessly with IMac G5

I have an IMac G5 which I would like to connect to a wireless network which I have set up with a BT Home Hub. The G5 does not have an airport card, but I have just bought a second hand Airport extreme (old version) base station through e-bay. I am really struggling to set it up. Do I need an Airport card or can I connect it in some other way. Not sure what cables etc etc I need. Many thanks

Thanks but isn't that basically what I've bought from ebay - an Airport Extreme base station, albeit an old one?
Sorry, but no. The AEBS does not support the ProxySTA feature of the newer 802.11n AirPort Express (AX).
    Are there any alternatives?
Other than the AX, other vendors, like Linksys, offers Ethernet bridges.
Is it really difficult to set up the proxy link you mention?
To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the Express to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility. The feature should work with any wireless network: a, b, g, or n; and 5GHz or 2.4GHz. (Note that the Express, which ships with firmware 7.3, must also be updated to firmware 7.3.1 for this feature to appear.)

  • Trying to get wireless with tew-424ub on my iMac

I have an older iMac that is running 10.4. I went out and got a TrentNET tew-424ub because I was reading online that I could get it to work. Now, I installed it and the driver on this website (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/21816) but still does not work. Is there something I am doing wrong? Do I need to do some sort of hardware scan or something? Has anyone gotten this to work? I would LOVE to give her this machine.
    Thanks so much!

Sorry, cannot help you with that particular wireless USB adapter. Generally speaking, a USB adapter is not going to work properly unless suitable Mac driver software is installed (and there have been many reports about difficulties). A working adapter driver stands the risk of being affected by a subsequent Mac OS update. So, with wireless USB, be prepared to experiment.
If the iMac model allows it, it is usually a better idea to install an AirPort (or, if applicable, AirPort Extreme) card.
A wireless Ethernet bridge can be a good alternative. Examples include Belkin F5D7330, D-Link DWL-G810 or DWL-G820, Linksys WET54G or WGA600N, and Netgear WGE111. A wireless Ethernet bridge connects to the Ethernet port of the computer. No drivers are normally required, and the unit can be used under almost any operating system. The bridge (sometimes called a gaming adapter) can also be used to make other Ethernet devices wireless. WPA security may or may not be supported for a certain model or a version of a model (a firmware update may be sufficient), so study the specifications before you buy.

  • Can't get my hp printer to work wireless with my iMac

I am so computer illiterate, it's not funny. I am really getting frustrated with trying to get my new HP Photosart all-in-one c7820 to work with my new iMac. This computer is awesome, but I am so used to pc's because that's all I have ever known. I connected the new iMac sucessfully to our wireless modem in the house, and connected the printer to the same wireless connection. They both say they are connected and working, but nothing will print. I DID get a message "The application HP Printer Utility quit unexpetedly" duting the installation but it didn't seem to matter, it said it was "installed successfully" When I try to print something, it seems like it's going to work, but it says stopped, and I can't get it to work.
I think I am missing something with the wireless info or something.
Anyone have any ideas? (In lamemans terms please)
    thanks,
    U

    Hi Ursula M-
Actually I find that opening statement very funny! Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards
Have you tried going to the HP website and downloading and installing the latest driver for that printer?

  • What is the WPS button on my access point?  I am trying to setup wirelessly with a canon MX892 printer

Printer setup instructions say to press the WPS  button on the access point (my 4th gen Time Capsule).  Does that mean hit reset and will I have to setup every other device again by doing that?

No, do not hit reset .. it is not a WPS button.
Apple products do not use WPS, so no WPS button is needed. And they have no need to implement one.. nothing exists outside the Apple bubble.. didn't you know that??
Read the forum expert Tesserax instructions for using WPS. https://discussions.apple.com/message/16034147#16034147
But it is better to plug in your printer to a mac by usb and use the disk provided to do a full manual setup of wireless.. WPS is simply the easy way.

  • Ipod touch trying to get wireless with dsl verizon

does anyone know how to get password or what password i would use to input into my ipod touch to access my dsl wireless router from verizon

Hey ronac75 on the router label there should be a WEP Key on your wireless router which is what you would as the password you have to enter it as exactly as seen on the router for Windows PC and OS 10 for MACs.

  • I want to use my Personal Laserwriter, but it won't work with my imac

I have a personal laserwriter printer. It work great with my older mac - Performa 580CD. However when I tried setting it up with my imac - using a MacOS 9.X driver and usb-serial adaptor - it only works with OS 9.x softeware.
So I have a laser printer that I cannot use. I'd like to get it up and running for my MacBoo Pro, too. Any advice?

The personal LaserWriter NTR and the Personal LaserWriter 320 are Postscript level 2 printers that can run with the built-in Mac OS X Drivers.
What is missing is a way to make the connection to recent machines that do not have a Printer/Modem/LocalTalk port. You can use the Mac's Ethernet port to carry AppleTalk packets (in addition to the standard TCP/IP packets) and use a converter to bridge from Ethernet to LocalTalk.
Two converters are available on the used market: The Farallon EtherMac iPrint LT and the Asante Asantetalk. The Asante may also be available new, but at a cost near US$100 new, you could get a more capable used Ethernet-capable printer for the same money.
If you have an older Mac that has a Printer/Modem/LocalTalk port and an Ethernet port and is still running OS 9 or earlier, you can download a package called LocalTalk Bridge to run in the background and do the conversion.
The other Personal LaserWriters would require a bridge AND a third-party driver.

  • How can get my iPad2 to synch with my iMac?

I was readying my iPad2 for a lengthy trip by trying to synch it with my iMac, specifically my bookmarks.  I changed nothing, except I allowed 8 apps to update first.  From that point onward, however, the iPad2 just froze without initiating the synch.  After a lengthy wait I would get the message, "...the iPad could not be synched because the synch session failed to start."  I restored the iPad to see if that would help, but so far nothing seems to work to allow it to synch.

I just restarted to a safe reboot, used Disk Utility to correct/repair preference problems, and restarted the iMac.  To my delight, the iTunes and iPad2 seem to be synching now.

  • Printing wirelessly with Windows Vista

Alright I just got our Vista laptop successfully connected to the TC wireless network.
Now I'm trying to print wirelessly with the Vista laptop, but when I go into "add printer" in the Vista control panel, it's unable to detect the printer. The printer is on.
My Macbook Pro is currently able to print wirelessly.
Anybody know what I can try?

I was able to add the printer on my Vista laptop with Bonjour on the disk that came with Time Capsule. Previously the laptop couldn't see the printer, but now it can wirelessly print.
This manual was helpful (p. 61).

  • Trying to get wireless

stupid question here, but i'm trying to get wireless with my mac, and don't know what card would be compatable.
i bought the machine back in 2002 when the digital connection became availble.
if someone could give me some info, i'd greatly appreciate it.
    thanks much.

Click on your Apple upper left and then about this Mac and then click more info and then choose Airport card and when this opens it will tell you the card type, either Airport or Aiport Extreme Card. And welcome to the discussions.

  • My Magic Trackpad lost functionality with my iMac (Lion)

    Hi--
I have been using a Magic Trackpad with my iMac (Lion 10.7.5) for over a year. This morning I find that I've lost several functions, including the double-tap + drag to select text, and now the three-finger swipe registers the same as the two-finger swipe. I know the problem is the iMac and not the trackpad itself; I tried unpairing the trackpad with the iMac and pairing it with a Mini (same OS), and all of the functions are working when paired with the Mini.
Having looked for others with similar issues, I've tried the steps of zapping the PRAM, deselecting/selecting the trackpad preferences, and looking for plist preference files that look like they are trackpad related (but didn't recognize any--am I looking in the wrong place?).
FWIW I was having problems with Time Machine just a week or two ago and performed a system software reinstall from Recovery Mode, which fixed the Time Machine issues. But I believe the trackpad was working fine until this morning--at least the click-and-drag selection b/c I use that function daily.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Okay, so I think I've figured out most of this. Many thanks to jefflogullo, whose post I found my answer on. Resetting everything on Universal Access solved most of my issues with double-tapping. Why on earth did they move it out of trackpad settings?

  • My new RAM doesn't work with my iMac.

    Hello,
I bought new RAM 4GB PC10600 DDR3 1333MHz SO-DIMM to installed in my iMac 3.4 GHz intel core i7, osx lion.
I try to installed it alone without original RAM (2GB * 2 pcs) installed to check how it works.
After press start button, there are 3 beep sounds and iMac won't start.
I try to reset PRAM follow the instruction, but it won't work.  Because there are 3 beep sounds alarm immediately after press start.
Does my RAM have a problem?

My iMac has 4 memory slots and I try to installed one by leave 3 slots empty.
By the way this is the 2nd ram I purchased from OWC with same spec as the last one (also same as link above) but different in purchase date (about 2 weeks different).
So now I have 2 GB *2 pcs (come with iMac) and 4GB * 2 pcs from OWC.
So I'm quit sure that this ram is compatible with my iMac because the first one is work.
    But I have some notice,
For the 1st RAM I bought from OWC (4GB PC10600 DDR3 1333MHz SO-DIMM), when first installation it also didn't work. I can't start iMac. And after 2 weeks, I try to installed it to my iMac again, now it can operate as normal.  What do you think about it?

  • I was on a trip and downloaded some tunes on my notebook.  i then wanted to sync them to my Imac at home, but can nnot find a cable hook up ..nor can i seem to do it through the wireless network...how can I sync from the notebook itunes with the imac at h

I was on a trip and I downloaded some tunes on my notebook.
At home now, and I am trying to sync the notebook itunes new songs to my Imac, so I do not have to open both computers in the 'shared library' section every time I want to hear a song that I bought last week on the notebook.  I simply want to dump my new tunes on my imac and play them from there.  Is there a cable I am missing, how do I connect both computers?
I can not imagine a world where I can buy the music on the notebook, but I can not transfer it on my Imac???!!!
    Suggestions please!
    Thanks everyone,
    Adie Elliott

There are several ways. iCloud is partially live, at least in the US, so if you are in the US and have the latest version of iTunes on your home computer, start up iTunes, click on the Store button in the list on the left side of the screen, and on the right side of the iTunes store screen look for Purchased (there will be an orange New! tag next to it). You can (re)download any songs you've bought from your account on any authorized device you own. IOW, buy with your iPad, download later with your iMac if you don't feel like syncing with your iPad.
If you have a wireless network at home you can using filesharing to connect the two computers and copy the songs from the notebook to the desktop. My wife has a corporate DropBox account and she just copies her new songs into the DropBox and grabs them when she's at home. I have a history of forgetting that I've downloaded songs on my notebook or at work so I always immediately copy them to my flash drive. So there you go - lots of ways to do what you want.
