Trying to help elderly friend remotely

Hi.
I'm in Spain and a good friend, a lady of mature years, has recently returned to UK. She has had BT Total Broadband Installed (correction, she had to install it herself!).
She has recently been getting a "welcome to this BT Fon Hotspot" rather than her connection to the Internet. She has tried to get help but has been connected to someone who she cannot understand in India.
She has her router in the hall and her PC in a spare room so she is connecting to her router via Wifi.
Whilst I know a little about Broadband, routers etc I have no idea what is going on here. I have no experience with BT Broadband etc.
Can someone throw some light on this so that I can try and help her (I shall be visiting her at the end of the week so will be able to get hands on then).

can I add that if the intension is to connect wireless then I would suggest that you don't install the BT cd as that is known to cause problems with wireless connection. just let windows manage the connection. I would also suggest you check for surrounding networks using inssider2 from metageek. It's free and you will be able to see any competing networks and if necessary select a free channel or a less congested one.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Trying to help a friend out with scripting problems in PS CS4

My friend at work has a mbp-c2d. He has scripting errors come up in photoshop when using Contact sheet II, photomerge, or HDR. He has recently upgraded from CS3 to CS4 and has had the same problem in both. He can goto the scripts in Applications- Photoshop CS4- presets- Scripts and click on the actual script icons and they will work but not through the program. Reloading programs doesn't seam to help. He is useing leopard.

Trying to help a friend read a .docx or .txt using an iphone4

I'm chatting with someone online and she can't view a .docx of .txt file on her iphone 4. She says she gets a blank page. I'm using a iphone version 6.1 and can open both easily. Any ideas?

Help with a script for elder friend

First off, with apologies, I am not a script familar person at all. I have an elderly friend who is switching to Mac for the first time. I wanted a way to close all open programs, with a prompt to save any open files and then run a Time Machine backup and shut down - preferably without restarting next day with any windows opening automatically. Time Machine is set to run every hour but she's a writer and could lose work if Time Machine doesn't run before shutting down for the night. So I searched and found some small scripts that I tried to put together. I think it works but after Time Machine runs it waits a very long time before shutting down. I'm wondering if some of you kind folks could refine this for me. (I do realize that automator has a quit all programs that I can save as an app but I'm trying to make this a one step 'app' process.)
So what I have is this:

First off, you're overthinking this. There's no reason why your friend would lose any data by not backing up prior to shutdown (unless she has a flaky hard drive that needs to be replaced). Assuming she's saving her work when she quits her apps, she should be fine.
Second, trying to auto-quit applications is dangerous. You don't check to see if any files need to be saved (there's no easy way to make that check anyway), and that in itself could cause data loss.
Third, time machine has its own command line utility: tmutil. There's no reason to script backupd.
Last, if I remember correctly, whether or not apps and windows reopen at startup can be set on a system-wide or per-application basis.
Give a clearer and more specific description of the goals you're trying to accomplish: what kind of apps are likely to be open, which of them will/might need to save data, what you want the machine to look like on restart, all with details. That would help a lot.

Help, im trying to help an elderly user who cannot remember the blackberry id his daughter gave him

Hi, Ive never used a blackberry before. My elderly friend John Williams was given a blackberry tablet by his daughter and can do nothing with it. She's out of the country and so cannot remind him of the blackberry id (email address & password) he needs in order to use it. Ive set him up a new gmail address, but cannot seem to change the blackberry ID. I was going to try wiping it all using the Blackberry instructions online to do that, but when I boot or reboot the tablet, it simply defaults to the Blackberry ID page, I can't get it out of that mode.
Please can someone help?
The email address I set up for John is [removed] if anyone would like to help an old airforce man I will check that email address for him until we get his tablet going.

Need help using Apple Remote Desktop for remote family members

I am new to ARD and need help. I know there are solutions to do what I am trying to do through LogMeIn and Teamviewer - but I have LogMein right now and the free edtition is going away and I think Teamviewer will do the same sooner or later. I have remote desktop but hadnt used it, so I thought it would be a good thing to implement so I wont have to worry about paying fees for services like LogMein or teamviewer down the road. Long story short I need to be able to remote help friends and family members with their macs and using applications, mostly through screen sharing and control and file sharing. All of the folks id like to help have home ( not business style ) internet service whith DHCP and non-static IP's. I have set this up for myselft to test it and I can be at work and search my homes IP address and I can see all the macs with ARD on them and it all works perfectly. I have a mac mini running Lion Server so the ports are forwarded to that server at my home - this is the only think I can think of that is making my home work and my friends not. But when I try to help my friends and family after I type in their IP and it scans it sees their computer - ( it shows a grayed out icon and their IP ) but nothing else. I cannot control or screen share. It says it cannot verify. I helped my friends put the ARD client ( most up to date client ) on their macs as well. I was hoping that using ARD would mean not haivng to set up my friends and family's routers for port fowarding and all those details. Is there anything I can do using ARD to be able to type in my friends IP address have it scan and then see all their MACS at their home and pick the one that needs attention/ help, without port forwarding or heavy set up ? I guess the root question here is how or what is best way to set up ARD to be used to help people remotley when they are all home users as well, no port forwarding, no static-IP, that kinda thing.
Any help is appreciated - Im trying to use ARD and not a 3rd party app since im afraid even if they are free now they wont stay that way. Please let me know throughts and sugesstions ;p)

This F1-help text must be maintained in the system on which ABAP WebDynpro is running. However, I need the F1-help text of a data element that exists in a remote system.
Is there a way to change the standard behavior of ABAP WebDynpro such that the F1-help of a remote data element is displayed (certain events to which I can register and implement my own F1-help; user exits that allow to change the standard behavior)?

When I say trying to access jsp from another system. I mean this : The jsp pages and the corresponding beans are located in my local system and it is running in Tomcat server. If I move to another system, say my friend's system who is sitting next to me and try to access this jsp page, giving the path as http://server:8080/abc.jsp, (wherein server refers to my system's name), I need to know how the bean that is running under the server know from where to bring the file.
I repeat that if all is running under my local system, it works perfectly fine. But when the same page is accessed from my friend's system, I need to know how to get the relative path.
Something has to be done in the folliwng place in the bean.

the getAbsolutepath() returns the path of the file. i.e if the file is in the directory of c:\sajiv\somefiles\abc.bmp, the absolute path returns c:\sajiv\somefiles\abc.bmp. It does not bring the relative path that is required. When the jsp page is accessed from my friend's sytem, the path passed is c:\myfriend directory\somefile\xyz.bmp, which is fine for that system. The bean is running in my system, and it takes the path as c:\myfrienddirectory\somefiles\xyz.bmp, which is not available in the local system.
Am Imaking myself veyr clear.
Now, any solutions please.............

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache. helping a friend..

Im not a lightroom user. even though I have some version 4. I use acdsee pro 6. but my friend has the 5.6 CC version but has a language issue so im trying to help me. basically will guide him over the phone.
he was editing a wedding, the computer crashed. he rebooted, lightroom came with the preview cache error. he rebooted again..same issue. he did a repair but to no avail. he tried installing an older version in parralel but no success.
what exactly does he need to do. im not a light room user. I use PS CS6 but not LR.
anybody can help to help him. I did read some posts and it noted about thumbnail previews and removing or erasing/renaming
1- where is this file located please?
2-are there many of these ? and how do I know which is the one he needs to choose?
