Trying to import and rename Raw files in an automated process

I have been managing for quite a while with Bridge and ACR but recently started playing with the demo of Lightroom and bought the software yesterday. There have been no problems key wording or processing existing Raw files etc. but I have become a bit unstuck on the process of importing new Raw files to the catalogue and I wondered if anybody can offer some advice on best practices. I am trying to maintain the formula I adopted after reading the DAM book.
My plan was to have Lightroom see the raw files as the card is mounted on my desktop and add them to the catalogue in a predesignated place, while automatically renaming them according to my standard file name format e.g Karyl_Raw_090402_V5F8581.dng, then adding copyright data and converting to DNG all at the same time.
I just ran a test with a small number of files and Lightroom was able to import the files complete with the copyright data stored in the IPTC section, which I had previously edited as a metadata preset, but it didn't rename them apart from adding the .dng suffix and they were all dumped in a subfolder within my user's picture folder on the Mac. In ACR I used to import the original .CR2 files, make any adjustments and then do a batch rename before copying to the final folder, which all worked. Obviously the hope is to make this all very automated and efficient so I'd be grateful for any pointers and good advice.
Thanks
Ashley

I seem to be getting there now and have discovered the renaming presets on the right hand side of the import panel. It's actually all working rather well but I'd like to find out more about the various IPTC fields to see if there is more information I should be adding.

  • Can I import and open raw files on the new photo app?

    Hi,
Can I import and open raw files on the new photos app on my ipad?  Does it convert it to jpeg automatically when you want to share them?
    Thanks.

Clem is telling you to click on the View menu, move the pointer down to the item "Metadata," & from its choices make sure "Show Titles" is selected. Do this, then make sure you are in a view in the main window that shows one or more videos (or whatever) that you want to title. Click once on one of them, & if the separate Info window is not open, open that (on the Windows menu or command + i as a keyboard shortcut). In the Info window the top line will be "Add a Title."
Click once on that & type your title.
This works for any item, video or photo.

  • Importing and editing raw files using a Canon 70D

I have a new Canon 70D.  If I upgrade to photoshop elements 12 will I be able to import raw files using this camera without using plug ins.  It would not import raw files off a 70D in elements 11 but would for my older ?Canon 60D.  Has this been corrected??

Well if you are still seeking the link, here is it:
    Windows: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5646
    Mac: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5645
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

And yes, you will be able to work upon these images in PSE12 using ACR 8.2

  • How do I get PSE10 to import and rename files in order?

When I place my CF card into the reader PSE opens and displays all the photos on the card the problem is they are out of order. I take volleyball photos and use the burst often The files are numbered properly by the camera but PSE seems to get them mixed up. When I import and renamer them PSE thakes them in the order they are shown and they are then renumbered out of order causind many shots to be out of order. I have never had this problem before. I have been using PSE 6 up thru 10 now and this is the first time I have had this happen. Last season I wasusing PSE9 and all my bursts sequences are in purfect order.
Am I missing something in the settings?

    Hi,
The problem I have is with the PSE Organizer "Photo Downloader". When I
plug the CF card from my camera into the card reader on the computer the
"downloader" opens up and shows thumbnails of the files on the card. At
this point the files are out of order based on the file numbers applied
by the camera. I.e.: one sequence looks like this-
    11,12,16,15,14,13,17,18; where 12 thru 16 were a burst. Another
sequence- 121,120,125,124,122,123; all one burst. As you can see they
are out of order.  I tried leaving the card in the camera and the same
thing happens. If I view the photos in /on the camera they are in the
right order. What has been happening is that I rename and number the
files as I import them. When that happens the files get numbered in
sequence as to how they are seen in the "downloader"....this means in
the examples shown 16 would become 13; 15 becomes 14 ect. This ends up
mixing up any sequence of shots.
Once I have the RAW files imported I import them to Lightroom 4 to do
most of my processing. Here if I choose to arrange by time created I can
get them in the right order but because the files are rearranged into
the correct order and since I renamed them on importing the file numbers
are now out of order. After figuring out what the problem was I can now
import the files to lightroom without renaming > arrange by time or file
name> rename> and all seems to be OK. My question is I never had this
problem before and it was very nice to be able to rename the files at
import and be done with it.
I haven't had time to check into it but one thing I'm wondering is is
there a way to rename the files at import without changing the file
number? Is there a way to insert the date and text while keeping the
    IMG_Number....i.e IMG001 becomes 2012 09 15_Volleyball_0001 keeping the
original file number and only inserting a date/name? This would solve
the whole problem as I could then arrange by file name and all would be
    well.
Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

  • Batch Rename Raw Files After Import?

Can you batch rename raw files after you import, so that the file name changes in Aperture and on the hard drive? I want to be able to edit images, and then rename only the keepers. This has been asked before here, but I could not find an answer.
    Thanks!

    File -> Export, Kind: Original
When you import a Raw to iPhoto it automatically creates a jepg preview of the file. Why? Because you cannot do anything with a Raw: you cannot print it, use it a slideshow and so on. However, with this preview you can work with the photo immediately.
You can, however, also process the Raw in iPhoto simply by editing it. The Raw processing engine in iPhoto the same one used in Aperture, but with less fine control. (Think of the differences between Word and TextEdit, iMovie and Final Cut). The output from the processing then replaces the preview. You can choose to save your output as either jpeg or tiff in the iPhoto Preferences.
When you are processing Raw in iPhoto you will see the Raw badge on the bottom of the iPhoto Window
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
Note: After you have processed a Raw, subsequent edits to the photo are carried out on the processed jpeg (or tiff) not the Raw. If you want to go back to the original then you need to use the Photos -> Reprocess Raw command.
Aperture works in an entirely different way. What are you trying to do, exactly?

First, your AE needs to be updated. The current version is 12.2.1.5
If that does not fix the problem let us know.
Second question, are you using the Sony import utility? If not, give that a try. Last question, can you open the files in Premiere Pro? I hope you are not trying to cut a feature film in After Effects.

    Hi
Why are you trying to import BPM zip file are you trying to configure the out of the box workflows?
They are something that need to be deployed from the process admin on BPM.
There would be the .exp file you would need as its BPM 10g that you would need to use.

    Hello Esther,
the problem seems to be that the temp folder of the target Integration Builder system can't be found:
'The system cannot find the path specified
    at [..] FileAccess.getTempDirectory([..])'.
You'll experience the same problem if you try a file based import or export within the Integration Builder directly.
I would recommend to continue the search there. You could check if the environment variables (for Windows: TEMP and TMP) of the OS of the system with the target Integration Builder to an existing path. Check also if the WebAs can access this path.
    Good luck

  • I just bought the Nikon D750 and my raw files will not open in CC Photoshop. Is anyone else that has this camera experienced this problem?

I just bought the Nikon D750 and my raw files will not open in CC Photoshop. Is anyone else that has this camera experienced this problem?
My Photoshop says it is up to date, but I am hoping that since this camera just came out, Adobe will have an raw file update soon.

DNG Converter is FREE.  Yes, really.  No subscription needed.
    - Baloney, NOT FREE, it's a proprietary software, not open AT ALL, see Legal Notices, so stop trying to distort the truth here.
Camera Raw (& DNG Converter) 8.7RC has been available since 2nd October, and opens D750 files in Photoshop & Bridge (& Lightroom using DNG Converter).
Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw 8.7 Release Candidate | digital camera raw file support - Adobe Labs
    - Still a cumbersome process for this of us that PAID for software and support, the whole point of this discussion is to implement this directly on LR, so we, the PAYING users don't have to waste time doing a useless process that could be EASILY AVOIDED ig Adobe released updates as they are needed, or if they OPENED THE SOURCE CODE so the community could do it.
Adobe created DNG, which is a well-documented backwards-compatible format, which is free for any manufacturer to use.
See here for manufacturers who do (it's an old list, but you get the idea):
    http://www.barrypearson.co.uk/articles/dng/products_cameras.htm
    - Really? Did you actually read the site? It has PRECIOUS information that illustrate my point: Adobe DNG is an attempt to stop the OpenSource community from achieving the goals of OpenRaw, which is TRUE OPENNESS, Again, Adobe is trying to get manufacturers to PAY LICENSING so they use a PROPRIETARY FORMAT that will HOLD CUSTOMERS on a PAID platform. OpenRaw is he answer for a true competitive environment.
Ask yourself why other manufacturers don't use a documented backwards-compatible format.
    - Easy, because they are lazy and want kick-back. The SAME answer that I (and the entire OS community) would give if you asked about Acrobat or MS Office.
If you use a particular piece of software as your main tool, and you buy a camera which isn't yet supported by it, it's your problem. There is an expression used in the industry:
"Poor Planning on your part does not constitute an Emergency on my part."
    - I agree here, it's MY PROBLEM that I decided to have a better product, it was my choice. I can still use OS Tools, which will be what I do moving forward, and about that expression, that is EXACTLY why Adobe will keep loosing customers, because the sense of urgency to help who pays their bills is inexistent. You are correct, why should they rush something so simple to help a customer right? Screw the customer... Thanks for making my point...

  • Import and rename photos via Automator and ExifTool

    Hiya,
Just finished my work on a Automator workflow in order to import and rename photos from a portable hard disk.
I had the problem that my portable hard disk (with integrated card-reader) was not recognised by Image Capture or Aperture. Therefore I couldn't import my photos straight away into Aperture.
Another problem I had was that Aperture doesn't rename photos while importing. Whereas other Automator actions offer this feature, they all didn't fulfill my requirements - yeah, I can be very fussy
That's why I started initially to write a Perl script based on ExifTool in order to copy and rename photos to my liking. Once this was done and very much in use, I started to put it into an Automator action with a little AppleScript around it.
Eventually, I initiated the entire Automator workflow with the Check For Disk action.
More information and the files needed can be found on my website http://photography.stephanjaeger.eu/2007/03/improve-your-digital-photography-wor kflow.html.
The only drawback of this script is that only one camera is supported. At the moment, I work on a solution to support several cameras.
The Perl script can used by itself, if you feel comfortable in using the Terminal.
I hope you find the information and the Automator action helpful.
    Any feedback appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Stephan Jaeger

    Brian,
Thanks for giving it a try. Let me know how you get on!
If you have any problems, please don't hesitate to contact me.
By the way, you don't have to use an external hard disk. You could replace easily the first step in that workflow with an other action, such as defining a folder that should be monitored, or selecting manually a folder that contains photos.
I hope that I find some time over the week-end to make some changes to the script. I will set up as well a page on my web site with more details.
    All the best,
    Stephan

  • Import all but raw files (NEF)..?

    Hi all -
New to iPhoto (and iP. only) I wonder if there's a way to batch import folders from 'Pictures' which contain jpeg and NEF (raw) files, without including these NEF files in the import.
I wish to have just jpeg and tiff files in the iPhoto library, or rather - keep all files in their position, but get iPhoto to point at the original jpeg and tiff files.
Suppose alternative is to move all raw files manually into new folders out of reach for iPhoto's import..?
    YoursTruly,
    _/h:@:n:s:N.
    iMac/Intel 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    redtop:
If your files are located in the Picturtes folder together in one subfolder you can sort them by type and the select all by the NEF files to drag into iPhoto's open window. Then when the jpgs and tiffs get copied into the library you can delete them from the Pictures folder to free up space on the HD.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application, iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar

  • Aperture and/or RAW files on a iPad?

I use Aperture as my primary photo editng program, and do the editing on my MacPro.  While traveling, as a backup to my memory cards, I have been importing the RAW files from my Nikon DSLR into Aperture on my laptop (MacBook).  When I get home I then import again directly from the cards to my MacPro, using the files on the laptop only if the card is lost or corrupted.  QUESTION:  I am considering getting an iPad to replace the MacBook while traveling. Is it possible to import my Nikon RAW files onto the iPad, using any program/app that will store them as a backup to my cards?  I would not do editing on the iPad.  I do not believe that there is an Aperture app/program that will run on the iPad (could be wrong), but that would not be necessary for my purposes.  I only want a place to store the RAW files and then be able to retrieve them in an emergency in an unaltered form.  Thanks for any suggestions.

You sure can, and it's actually pretty easy.
First, you'll need the Camera Connection Kit for your iPad so you can either connect your camera via it's USB cable, or read an SD card if that's what your camera uses.
No software is necessary on the iPad...simply connect the camera or SD card using the CCK and the iPad will import the images into a new event.
Then when you are ready to import the images on the iPad into Aperture, simple connect it via it's USB cable and do an import in Aperture. The iPad will show up in Aperture as a device, and you can import the images on the iPad using all your usual settings.
One obvious consideration is to make sure you get an iPad with enough storage for the photos you anticipate storing on it. As you know, RAW files--depending on your camera model--can use up storage pretty quickly. Apple just announced a 128GB version of the iPad so you have plenty of options.
The iPad is a great device for what you describe, i.e., using it as a travel device.  You can easily view your images, do slideshows, and do some basic editing using iPhoto and other apps. Just don't plan on doing a lot of heavy-duty editing with it.

  • How to do search with multiple texts across documents and rename the file with found text?

    Hello:
I'm trying to do the batch search across the multiple documents and rename the file (or save as) after the found word?
    In example:
I have many unique texts and would want to search across the multiple documents.
If a document is found with that unique text then, the document is either renamed or save as with that unique text.
So, I could know what unique text that file holds.
    How do I do that?
    Let me know.

    When you want to post a block of code, you can enclose it with the mark ups { code }
That is the key word code surrounded by curly brackets, but without the spaces
You seem to be running a very old (and unsupported release of the database)
7.3 has not been a current release for about 10 years.
It's probably been that long since I've used this technique, but i think it should work.
You should consider welcoming your system to the 21st century by upgrading to a supported release ;-)
If you used split to chop up your export file, use cat or dd to reassemble it.
    So, something like this:
    mknod bk.dmp p
cat xaa xab xac xad xae xaf xag xah xai > bk.dmp &
    imp SYSTEM/$PASSWD parfile=imp_bk.parfile
    rm bk.dmp
    $ cat imp_bk.parfile
    file=bk.dmp
    log=imp.log
    full=y
    buffer=1048576
    ignore=y
commit=y let us know if still have problems.

    Using AP 3.2.3 on 10.7.4.
Getting very green tint on importing GF 1 RAW files. Also a message saying the files were processed usnig a previous Aperture RAW conversion. When I click on the reprocess button nothing happens for a few seconds then the WB corrects, but not every time. Sometimes I have to click on the WB picker for it to have an effect. This has only just started to happen as I've used the GF1 for 2-3 years with no problem. I see from other posts that the WB is a known issue but I alsohave the previous RAW message as well.
    Any thoughts?

    Two things to try:
Force the generation of new previews by holding down the option key while selecting "Update Preview"
If this only happened after you upgraded to 10.7.4 and worked well before, then register your camera with the lauch services database - see this post by Alan Roseman:This solved my questionRe: Aperture 3 preview of raw file greenish, but read the follow up posts (the lsregister command) as well, on how it is supposed to work and how to correct the typos.
