Trying to import fotos from a nas drive into iphoto

OK folks.
Seems that I'm taking the long road instead of the short but here it is ....
I have a mac mini with a SSD drive on which I store the OS in one partition and user data in another.  No problem.
I also have a non-partitioned Time Capsule that I use to store a slew of photos that I shoot in RAW, JPG and TIFF.  Some of the files are duplicates at different exposures, non-edited, etc.  So, I really don't want to get into the habit of storing all my photos on the SSD drive.
What I would like to do is share some recent photos via a photostream to allow team parents to grab copies remotely.  According to everything that I've seen, I can only open a photo stream from my Mac with iPhoto.  Step 2.
So, the initial question is how can I get iPhoto to recognize that NAS mounted disk to even import the pictures?  Step 1.
(I'm really not up for copying all those photos to my hard drive.
A future option is to take one of the many HD and install it in the second bay and use it as working drive but I don't really have that kind of time right now.
Knowledgeable enough to follow UNIX type instruction and do the hardware but right now I'm looking for the 'this evening' solution.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Have you tried the File -> Add to Library command? Or drag and drop to the iPhoto Window? Or drag and drop to the iPhoto icon?
But you need to think this out carefully.
You do not want to run iPhoto with the Library on your internal drive and the images on another one. This article has information on how to do that and why you shouldn't.
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6361
The best solution is to run a Managed iPhoto Library, and you can do this from a directly attached disk (read USB/Firewire/Thunderbolt) but not a network share like a NAS.
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, exporting, saving edits and sharing the photos.
See this article
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168
for more. Note also the comment:
“Additionally, storing the iPhoto library on a network rather than locally on your computer can also lead to poor performance or data loss.”
Are you sure Aperture won't do photostreams?
If you're thinking of sharing via Photostream well Flickr is nearly as good, free and simple.

  • I'm trying to import photos from my SD card into iPhoto, which I have done many times before, but now I'm not seeing the "Import All" button to start the import.

I have an iMac, with an SD card slot, equipped with iPhoto '11(v9.2.3), and until recently have imported photos from my SD card without problem. But now, after turning on iPhoto, and inserting my SD card, nothing happens, except that a "canon_dc" icon appears on my desktop.  The "Import All" button no longer displays above my previously imported photos and I am, therefore, unable to complete the photo import.  Has something changed?

By design, the organizer (and any other database management systems) is there to prevent you from duplicating your media files. The catalog management allows you to have the same image in different categories or albums. Duplication in different folders is to be absolutely avoided.
The same image file can have multiple tags like 'family', 'vacations', 'birthdays' and be present in three different albums with the same names. On obvious advantage is less disk space. Another one with your present folder system is that if you edit one of your duplicates, the other ones are unchanged.
I don't see an easy way to make your present folder structure simplified for the organizer ...

Error -36 is, as X423424X says, a generic I/O error. It doesn't say anything about what caused the error, or indeed where it occurred (source or target).
You have to describe exactly your action when the error occurs. Is the ext'l drive you mentioned formatted as NTFS (Win default file system)? Without additional software, Mac OS X cannot write to NTFS, it can only read from it.

  • How do i import movies from my sony camera into iphoto?

When I imported my photos from my sony cybershot into iphoto my videos did not come along with them. I've been using a canon with canon image browser until now and never had this problem. HELP!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Launch Image Capture, located in the Applications folder, connect the camera and manually upload the movie files to a folder on the desktop. Then import into iPhoto.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • What setup do I use to import files from my hard drive into FCE 4.0.1?

I can import files (HD from Canon camera, saved as QuicktimeMov - ratio 1920 x1080, 25fps) to FCE but they show up as needing rendering.
(red line above timeline)  What should my settings be to make them compatible to FCE?  I have it set on Apple Codec Intermediate 1920x1080i50 with HD format.
Have tried all the settings but come up with the same result.  Also, do I need to compress my files before I import them to FCE?
    Thanks.

Video from the 550D (acually, all Canon DSLRs) cannot be used directly in FCE.  There is a Canon EOS plugin that allows you to directly Log & Transfer from the DSLR into Final Cut Pro, but the plugin does not work with Final Cut Express.
In order to use the 550D video in Final Cut Express you will need to convert it to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec by using a utility such as MPEG Streamclip or Clipwrap.  You need to do this before you import the video into FCE.
Even though the 550D saves video as .mov files (QuickTime files) it uses a Canon H.264 codec which is why it needs to be transcoded into Apple Intermediate Codec before you can use it in FCE.

  • How to upgrade a Library on an external drive created in a previous version of aperture so I can re-import it from the external drive into Aperture 3.5.1 on my MBP ?

I have exported earlier Projects [which were created in Aperture 3.4.5] to an external hard drive. Now I wish to reimport them into Aperture 3.5.1 - which I use after having upgraded to Mavericks - but am given an error message saying I can’t reimport because the external drive is storing a Library created by an earlier version of Aperture than I’m using now. It tells me to upgrade that externally stored Library.
The Question - one can only upgrade a Library on one’s computer, not on the external drive. How can I upgrade it if I can’t get it back into Aperture [3.5.1] on my MacBookPro in the first place ?
    Thank  you
    Bob

You can upgrade the library on the external drive. Connect your external drive to your computer.
Then select the library with the exported projects on the external drive and double-click it to open it in Aperture. This will upgrade the library to Aperture 3.5.1.  Since upgrading can sometimes be problematic, I recommend to make a backup copy of the library before you try to upgrade the library.
After that you should be able to merge the library into your main library using File > Import.

  • When trying to import images from an external hard drive into Lightroom 5 it states no preview for the files selected

    Go easy on me here….
Trying to import images from external hard drive into Lightroom 5 but the selected images state 'no preview for file'.
All other images on the external hard drive can be previewed and imported without issue.
I have tried adding the images onto the computers hard drive as well but still no joy.
I've used Lightroom 5 previously and had no issue so convinced its the files I'm trying to import (jpeg files).
    Any help greatly appreciated.

Is there a plugin for FCPX Ver 10.0.7, I found one for FCP 7  but that doesn't work. I also downloaded The Canon XF Utility but although this opens the clips from the camera I am unable to get the clips into FCPX.
    Fred,
Sorry, I mis-spoke. I do have Canon Utility installed on my SL machine, but have used it mainly as a file review interface and as a backup utility. My MXF files are then brought in via Log & Transfer in FCP 7, which requires one of the plug-ins (and as you noted, does not work with FCPX).
In the majority of situations I'm ingesting on location to a MBP running Lion. In that case, I have the option of importing them either into FCP7 or FCPX.
A came across this hack for  getting the Canon plug-in to install on SL. It looks straightforward but I haven't tried it, so if you do, proceed at your risk. As for me, my plans are to partition my drive later this month and boot from both 10.6 and 10.7 as necessary.
    Good luck.

It sounds like you are using an application to import. You can do it manually.
Start > Computer (on the right) > scroll to the bottom and you will see your iPhone under Portable Devices > Open it and you will see a Drive, open that and there will be a DCIM folder. That is where your photos will be (There may be other folders each holding photos).
