Trying to Import my iTunes Library Retrieved from a Crashed Mac on my New Mac
Hi all,
My old mac laptop crashed and I had the contents of it transferred to my new MacBookPro laptop. My itunes folder from the old mac laptop is now on my new laptop's desktop but I can't find a way to import my old itunes library to the new one. Which of the old files do I have to move and where, please? Thanks in advance for your help.

My old itunes folder's content reads like this:

Go into iTunes prefs>Advanced - check that the path to your iTunes is correct.
It should look similar to this - /users/YOUR ACCOUNT/Music/itunes/itunes music - if the path is not correct then select the 'change' option and point the way.
If you have the ! Next to the tunes then the path is incorrect. This doesn't mean that the files are missing - just iTunes cannot find the way - iTunes is a data base manager and as such can lose track if things are moved in the Finder.

Question about trying to import my itunes library
ok so like i had a problom with my computer and had to toattly unistall and reinstall itunes, after this nothing was in my itunes library, however i backed up all my music and the itunes libary file on my external hard drive, now when i try to import the itunes library file it says the file cannot be imported because it is not appear to be a valid exported file
so i guess i never exported the file like i should have
like is thier anyway i can use my old itunes library file anyway to get all my playlists and play counts back into my library or could i some how do this with my ipod with all the playlists and playcounts on it

Sounds like a total bummer, dude. If you're trying to import the iTunes Library.itl file, you can't do that the way you're trying to. Try this out and see if this helps you out:
1) Hold Shift when you open iTunes.
2) You should be prompted to choose iTunes library. Click "Choose iTunes Library..."
3) Navigate to where your .itl file is stored on your external hard drive.
This should populate your library info in iTunes. Let me know how it works out for you! -
I did find the migration assistant on the MAC but no counterpart on my PC.
Therefore I don´t know how to start.

Import iTunes library from an external HD to a new Mac
I just got a new macbook and am trying to import my itunes library from my external hard drive. I tried to just select my library on the external HD in the advanced tab, but my list of songs and ratings is not being imported into the software. I selected my xml file and my playlists showed up but not songs
How do I accomplish this?

JasonI just ran into this, too, when my Mac Mini died. I assume you're taking the data (songs) off of your old hard drive? Maybe with an external enclosure wrapped around it? Here's what I did:
1. Open your Mac's main hard disc, where your iTunes resides. (By "open" I mean "double click on.") 2. Open "Users". 3. Open your user name, whatever you sign into the computer with (if you don't know, it's NOT "Shared"). 4. Open the "Music" folder. 5. Open the "iTunes" folder. 6. Scoot this window off to one side of your screen, and go to your old hard disc, where your music is, and repeat steps 1 through 5. 7. Now drag all of the folders you see on your old hard disc's same window over to your new hard disc's open window. They should be: a folder labeled Album Artwork, iTunes Library, another folder labeled iTunes music (that's where your music is!), and iTunes Library.xml. You might also have additional things like "iTunes Music Library (2)" and a folder labeled Previous iTunes Libraries. Drag them over too! IMPORTANT: you'll get a message saying "This folder already contains a newer version..." etc. "...do you want to replace?" Of course you do! - you're filling up a newly formatted disc, right? Say "yes" each time. You'll know you got it right because it'll take a long time for the iTunes Music folder to copy over, since that's where all the data is. When you start up iTunes afterwards, all your settings should be exactly like they were before! Enjoy!

I am trying to move my itunes library from my old pc to my new imac, home sharing is on and I can see the shared library. My problem is that when I check the shared library to import it to my imac I cannot import it. Can anyone help me?
You need to transfer the iTunes Library from the most recent backup you made before the hard drive was replaced.
You can't transfer the full iTunes Library from the iPad back to iTunes.
There are third-party Windows applications that will transfer data from an iOS device, but they don't re-create the iTunes Library exactly as it was before. -
Hi, I tried to restore my itunes library from an external drive and did everything that's written here step by step. when I chose the itunes library to import itunes just said that its accessing the itunes store but nothing happened. Does anyone know how to do this so that all my playlists are also imported and not just the music itself?
When I have done this, all I did was network the two machines and copy the contents of the iTunes folder to the other machine, and that's it.
My understanding (which may not be 100% correct) is that the one file that is absolutely necessary is iTunes Library, and that the XML file is actually a copy auto-generated from the iTunes Library, appearing in a different format only for non-iTunes apps that take advantage of the iTunes Library data.
As far as I know, if you simply have the Library (database) file and all your original music files, iTunes on that computer should operate as it did on your old computer. I believe that the Album Artwork, Genius Data, and XML files can be regenerated from the Library file. Not sure about the Extras file. -
have bought a mac book and when i tried to download my itunes library its only showing items purchased from the apple store. As most of my music has been imported from CDs this is very frustrating. How can i get the rest of my library onto the new macbook.

My old laptop crashed but I had my Itunes Library backed up to an external HD. I've managed to import my Itunes Library from the HD but none of my old play lists appear on in Itunes. I tried syncing to my Iphone 4S that has the playlists to no avail. Ideas and solutions welcome

Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs. -
Can someone please provide instructions on how to import an iPhoto library from an old Mac to a new Mac without getting a bunch of duplicates? I tried transferring my pictures using an external hard drive and then copying it to the Pictures folder on my new Mac. I ended up getting a bunch of duplicates. My old Mac has an older version of iPhoto while the new Mac has iPhoto '11. Is that the cause of the problem? Please advise. Thanks.
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

I am in the process of trying to transfer my iTunes library from one computer to another. Some of the music/film info has been edited (by me) in my library (using get info). When put onto new computer (following apple's instructions- using an external hard drive) the info has gone back to how it was before i edited it.. Help!?

I am considering the purchase of an iMac or Macbook and want to know whether I can import my iTunes library of +400 albums from my Windows PC over my Home Network? 300 of these albums have been imported from CD's, so would not want to have to do that again.
Just copy the entire /Musci/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer.
The libraries will be identical (date added, ratings, artwork, etc.).

Apparently, something went way wrong SOMEWHERE, SOMEHOW... and now I'm afraid of losing ALL MY MEDIA considering I have NO ITUNES ON MY LAPTOP! I followed all appropriate steps found in trouble shooting, when I reinstalled iTunes though, the reinstalled music on my pc was a handful of songs that were triplicates, even listed some five TIMES! 2, by removing it from you synced from and re-syncing. Only photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad (either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view)
3, the location of the photos that you synced to the iPad should be listed on the iPad's Photos tab when connected to your computer's iTunes.
4, you can copy the photos from your iPad to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . You should also be able to delete them from the iPad as part of the transfer process to your computer, and it's then your choice whether to add them to your sync photo list so as to copy them back to the iPad. Copying them to your computer would allow you to organise them into folders and therefore be able to sync them back into separate albums.
5, I don't use Dropbox either. There are some third-party browser apps in the iTunes App Store that allow you to download pages so that you can view them when offline e.g. Atomic Web (the whole page is saved within Atomic Web, it doesn't place a photo into the Photos app)
6, deleting content should help. If you remove an app from your iPad then you also remove the content that it's got on the iPad - so if you then decide to reinstall it back onto the iPad then you will need to manually add back any content that you want in it. None of the Apple built-in apps (including Photos) can be removed from the iPad
