Trying to increase HD space...

Hi,
I'm using a 2006 60 gig white Macbook. Its running Snow Leopard. I have moved absolutely everything that I can possibly think of over to a terabyte hard drive. So the only things that are on this Macbook are the Apple Apps that came with it. Ok there are two that didn't, but they don't take up much space at all.
Its saying that I only have about 13 gigs of HD space left. Are there files and apps lurking in places that I wouldn't know to look? I have no pictures, no music, no movies, no video on the HD (that I know of). My Garageband projects have been moved to the terabyte also. So… is there something that I have overlooked? Any help is appreciated… (I really don't want to have to wipe it clean and start over if I don't have to. But it has been cloned in case of an emergency.)
Thanks...

The amount of free space you're reporting sounds about right so there's probably no scope for any further improvements.  I think you should follow the advice of cereskit and get a bigger disk.  Although popular mythology has it that Mac disks don't need defragmenting, this is only true when one keeps more than 20% of the disk empty. Once the disk is more than 80% full, newer files become fragmented and the whole system slows down - and you've probably reached the point where this is happening.

With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Look though other Apple Mail folders like the junk mail and delete the mail that is in there. Look through your sent items folders and see there is any mail in there that can be deieted.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • I am trying to resize disk space on parallels 6 for windows XP under configure Hardrive and I get the error resizing failed unable to resize last volume the file system of this volume might be damaged or not supported?  I am on a Mac using Parallels 6

I have been trying to increase my disk space for windows xp on my Imac and I am running parallels 6.  before opening windows I go into configure in parallels and open the hard drive and try to move the allotted disk space from 32 gig to 64 or any other increased gig and then apply and I get the error message: resizing failed unable to resize last volume.  The file system of this volume might be damaged or not supported.  How do I increase the size??  I just also did a disk repair utility with Apple on the Apple side of my IMAC.  Please Help!!   I had uninstalled SQL server on the windows side and needed to uncompress files to install this and then I ran short on disk space.

This sounds to me that your Parallels XP file system is corrupted and not the OSX file system.
Have you checked the XP file system while running the Parallels XP yet ?
However, it would be better to ask such question in the Parallels Forum http://forum.parallels.com/

  • Increase HD Space

    Hello all.
I have an xserve that has 2 hard drives in it that are mirrored. They are 80GB. I would like to get new hard drives to increase my space. Does anyone have any thoughts on how I can do this on a live mail server? Can I simply unplug one of the 80GB's and put in a bigger drive, allow the data to copy over, and then replace the second 80GB drive?
Does that make sense? Let me know your thoughts.

Before you attempt to upgrade the drives in the server you should make sure that the drives you chose will work in the Apple Drive Modules (ADMs) of the server. Storage specifications for XServes are usually limited to what Apple has published for the particular model of server +and its attached storage type+. Forums are full of requests for assistance in situations where individuals are attempting to use non-Apple drives that exceed those published storage specifications with less than satisfactory results.
The choice of drive is also a major consideration when trying to use non-Apple branded drives in a server situation. Using desktop class drives or bulk-OEM drives in a server situation is a sure path to failure within a very short timeframe. When selecting drives you should select those that are 'Enterprise' class, qualified for server use, and fall within the limitations of the published capacities and types. You should purchase one of the drives you wish to use and test it in your server to insure that it will work with the ADMs that you have in your server.
Once you have selected and tested your drives you should boot the server from an external Firewire drive or the installer DVD and make a clone or diskimage of the drive. You can clone the drive to one of the new drives if you place it in an external enclosure. Just remember to partition the drive with Disk Utility.app so that it will work with the server architecture that you have. For Intel XServes, you will be partitioning the drive as 'GUID'. For PPC hardware you will be partitioning as 'Apple Partition Map' (APM).
Once you have cloned the boot drive to the new disk, place it in the ADM, insert it in the server, and boot the server from the installer DVD. Click past the first screen and select 'Terminal' from the utility menu. Then do:
    diskutil list
It should return something like this with one disk installed:
    /dev/disk0
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUIDpartitionscheme                        *93.2 Gi    disk0
       1:                        EFI                         200.0 Mi   disk0s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Server HD               92.8 Gi    disk0s2
the 'size' will be different for a larger drive. Then enter:
    diskutil enableRAID mirror disk0
That will enable RAID on the volume in a 'broken' configuration. Once that is done, shutdown the server, insert the other ADM and reboot.
When the server comes backup, open Disk Utility, select the 'RAID' tab, name the set, and drag the two drives into the window. DU will detect the RAID status and start the rebuild in the background. Depending on the amount of data on the drive, it could take anywhere from an hour or more to rebuild the set. Once the rebuild is finished, open the 'Startup Disk' System Prefpane and make sure that the boot drive is selected. Reboot the server to make sure that it starts with the new configuration.
It cannot be emphasized enough that you should have a tested, working, backup of the boot drive and data or -as in your case- a working replacement drive to fall back on. Also, the new, non-Apple branded, drives that you install will not be covered by any Apple service agreement that you currently have in place.

I was trying to buy more space on iCloud , hit the wrong key, and now it is hanging on my iPad.  What to do?

A reset may help. Tap and hold the Home button and the On/Off buttons for approximately 15-20 seconds, until the Apple logo reappears. When the logo appears, release both buttons.
No content is affected by this procedure.

    Hi,
You can do it in couple of ways,ie either with sapdba or brtools.
execute sapdba or brtools and follow the menu options(its quite straight forward)
or you can do it through sqlplus with the command
    ALTER TABLESPACE PSAPEL46DD  ADD DATAFILE '/path of the file ' size xxxM;

  • Out of bounds exception although increasing heap space

    Hello,
In my java application, there is a gif file with the size 6000 X 3500 . This file is 536 KB and i use this file with scroll bar.
My question is that although I increased heap space to 512, it still keep going to give "out of bounds" exception when i try to set new dimention to the frame bigger than (800, 1000).
How can I use my gif file with bigger frame?

    There is no such exception.
    Are you talking about ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException?
    OutOfMemoryError?
    Something else?

  • Increase free space in MacBook Air

How do I increase free space on flash drive for Air.  My free space decreasing and "other" increasing size!

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • Error when we tried to increase limits for Property of type string

    hi,
Actually initially we were getting error when we were trying to add content for property of type string of character length greater than 255.
After that we increase size for that property in pointbase from 250 to 1000 and that works.
But when we tried to increase limit from 1000 to 4000,it was taking only limit upto 1300.
    Response needed urgently

    Cases can be
    1. file name should be in caps (upper case lower case conversion
    2. when executing in bg variant not picked
    3. collision of file path across servers in a system
In a system there will be servers  like in Quality it can have varying servers ex sapqp1 sapqp2 sapqp3
In here qp1 qp2 and qp3 are the servers in quality which can hold the unix data (al11) . If qp2 is directed in your check and if qp2 dosent have the file path it throws error. recently we have faced a similar issue . Problem was solved when basis guys made the setting across all server's to access the path.
    Try these options.

    Hello Prathap,
if you are unfamiliar with database administration for SAP systems,
then start reading the documentation about the BR*Tools:
    [Getting Started with BR*Tools|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70ehp2/helpdata/en/0c/cd271365debc42bef96ac7fd907787/frameset.htm]
For a start, you can call BR*tools on OS-level:
    brtools -u /
    2 (Space Management)
    1 (Extend tablespace)
It is a good idea to post your question in the "SAP on Oracle"
forum. BR*Tools are the same on Unix and Windows, so there
is no need to also crosspost on "SAP on Unix" forum. The
    operating system doesn't matter.

    Mark

I am trying to create enough space to load Yosemite.
I currently have about 5.4gb of unused space.
I have deleted about 70gb of movies (all movies from the "files") but still show some 60gb of movies under "storage" in "about this computer". I have no idea where these could be.
There is also about 150gb of "other" that cannot be all the files (I do not have that many )

Have you emptied the trash since deleting files?
How many files are on your computer, I would dare to guess that you, just like me, don't actually know that. The 150GB are files on your computer (regardless of whether you think they are not) the next step will be to identify them.
