Trying to install a copy of 10.3 or 10.4 onto an old iMac G3

Hi, I am tring to bring an old indigo imac g3 500Mhz 20Gb HD into the present day for my mother-in-law and have just put in 1Gb ram in order to install either 10.3 or 10.4 (I have been told that 10.5 is a no go). I have two copies of 10.4 that came with an old ibook G4 and a Mac Mini G4 and also a copy of 10.3 that also came with the Mac Mini. None will install on the iMac G3 with the note "this operating system and softare bundle cannot be installed on this Mac" (incidentally, although I am not sure this is relevant, I am using the DVD drive on my MacBook Pro by firewire link as the G3 only has a CD-Rom drive). I believe that if I buy a retail copy it will work, but at £90 it's maybe not worth it having just spent £70 on the Ram, however as I no longer use any of the other copes of 10.3/10.4 mentioned on another Mac I feel agrieved that I cannot use one of these. Does anyone know a way that will let me install one of the copies that I already have? Any help much appreciated.

BEFORE installing anything later than OSX 10.1, you must update the firmware (using OS 9). If you don't, you may lose the video output. It is not easy to recover from this. If the iMac has FireWire ports, you can use 10.4. Otherwise 10.3 is the maximum. In either case, you will have to find a retail copy of OSX.

  • I'm trying to install my copy of CS5 under CS6 because

I'm trying to install my copy of  CS5 under CS6 because my new Canon Pixma Pro-10 will not install a plugin of PrintStudioPro in CS6 but does install it in CS5, but the Adobe website says my SN for CS5 is correct but will not recognize it. Where do I turn? This question is not addressed by any of your question options. I have had a registered copy of Photoshop since v2.0, skipping CS4. Now where do I turn? phone 808-455-1626, or email: [email protected] Please help!

And what actualyl is the problem? Does CS5 refuse the serial? Your blurb is confusing. If it's merely an install issue, run the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool and install the programs in proper order, starting with the older version.

  • Is it possible to install Tiger onto my old iMac G3 ?

I would like to install Tiger onto my old iMac G3 and give it to my grandson. The iMac is presently running Mac OS 9.1 and has 320 mgs RAM and 6 GIG hard drive. The processor speed is 350 MHz. Is this possible ?
Can I use the Tiger OS disks that came with my new G5 or do I have to buy another Mac OS Tiger specifically for iMacs ?
I don't mind buying some more RAM if the above is possible - it is a lovely little machine and runs perfectly right now - I hate just dumping it! Grateful for any help, thanks, Diana.
    iMac G3   Mac OS 9.1.x

I don't know if Apple supports the G3 iMacs for Tiger. You may have to use Xpostfacto in order to install it on it. From what I've heard, performance on a 350MHz G3 with Tiger should be adequate. You might have to update your iMac's firmware before installing it, though.
Upgrading the hard drive will help some. Plus, I would suggest you get the memory up to at least 512MB. I'm pretty sure your model iMac will take up to 1GB via 2 PC100 slots.

  • I tried to update itunes it corrupted the previous version, I'm trying to install new copy get this message "service apple mobile device (apple mobile device) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privleges to start system services." Help!

Not sure what to do.  I've tried a system restore on my computer after the update in hopes of undoing the problem, that didn't work.  I've tried to install, the new version of itunes for over two days now and I get to the point where it says "starting services" and it almost get's done and then it gives me that message " Service apple mobile device (apple mobile device) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privledges to start system services."  Then it gives me three options to click on "abort", "retry" or "ignore".  I've tried to retry over and over and it does no good, I just get the same message.  I've tried ignore and the one time it did finish installing itunes, it didn't work, I got error messages telling me that it failed to download properly and I needed to delete the program and download it again.  I thought maybe it had something to do with my ipod not being pluged into the computer so I pluged that it and it's still giving me the same message.  I just don't know what to do.  I'm very frustrated and I would really appreciate it if someone could help me.  I'm completely out of ideas.

  • Mid2007 macbook trying to install retail copy of 10.6.3 after install fails say bless tool unable to set boot disk help!

Mid2007 macbook when trying to install retail 10.6.3 screen comes up installation failed because cant set start up disk try startup utility. when try startup utility it says bless tool cant set boot drive when called apple support guy said my harddrive was going out even though the computer had no ill signs before inserting install disk. I bought new harddrive and installer does same thing . Then apple sent me a new disk - same thing . I have ran disk utilities numerous times tried to reinstall numerous times even hooked external harddrive and ran tech tools from it one side note the startup key commands do not seem to work as in apple op pr,apple op of etc but will go to option start.  I realize it is getting old but something is keeping software from loading i also read where i could take ram out for awhile i did this. No change. Taking to apple store is not option any and all suggestions welcome

Sounds like the machine has a firmware password as you cannot change the startup disk (stored in NVRAM) and only the option key at boot works.
You will need to option boot from the 10.6 disk and use the Firmware Password Reset utility and enter the password to disable it.
If you forget the password, take the machine to a Apple Authorized Repair and they can bypass it in hardware.

    Solved!

    Hi Beni,
chances are your BIOS is set to AHCI Mode. SATA harddrives aren't recognised until after the driver is installed, which is not part of the XP cd install. So you have to change it to "Compatability"
Start the BIOS Setup Utility menu.
    Select Config.
    Select Serial ATA (SATA).
    Select Compatibility.
Now you can install XP. Change the setting back only when you've installed the right drivers.

  • Can I copy my new laptop (system an all) onto my old computer?

Hi, I recently bought a Macbook Pro 15" Retina display, but doesn't have ethernet or firewire ports and it won't read my old ipod as well as a LOT of my applications. Fortunately I still have my old Macbook Pro. Unfortunately in February, by error I changed the permissions of ALL the files on my old computer to read & write (I had only meant to do that with Microsoft Word files). After I did that, it would stick on the apple icon when I switched the computer on. I tried Disk Warrior and fsck in Safe Boot mode but it didn't help. I bought a new computer and was able to copy all my files from an old backup drive. My old computer and my new one won't communicate as the old one does not have thunderbolt, only firewire. I think the only option to get my old computer to start again is to erase the disk and somehow "migrate" using the files on my new computer, from Time Capsule, or from my old backup. I'm afraid of what will happen either way. My old computer used Mac OSX 10.7.8 and my new one uses 10.8.4. My old computer was an Intel-based Power PC. The Time Capsule files are from my new computer, with the new system. I'm not sure I will be able to "migrate" from new to old. Maybe its better that I stick to the old backup drive option. How do I go about doing any of this if won't even turn on? It won't turn on from the backup drive either, tried that. Would I have to erase the disk by connecting it somehow to my new computer, buying some kind of firewire to thunderbolt adapter, and then "migrating from" either my new comp or old backup? I don't have any system disks. My new computer came with it installed and I lost the disks of my old one. Any advice or suggestions as to how I can go about doing this? Thanks!

Let's take this step by step. Your first problem as you say is "How do I go about doing any of this if won't even turn on?"
You have two options. You can buy a copy of a OS DVD that will work on your MBP. And use that disk to boot the MBP, repair / erase the drive.
Or you can take the hard drive out of the MBP, install it in an external enclosure / caddy and connect it via usb to the new computer. (External enclosure are readily available, e.g. through Amazon.) Once that is done, you can move data back and forth between the new Mac and the old drive. Finallly you can replace the drive in the MBP.
Be aware however the MBP may not boot from the OS that is on the new computer.

  • I'm trying to install an old version of Dreamweaver on a new computer that doesn't have a CD drive.

Hi. I've recently bought a new computer that doesn't have a CD drive. I am trying to install Dreamweaver CS4 on my new computer (and uninstall from they old one), but I only have the program on CD. Is it possible for me to download Dreamweaver CS4 and use the activation key I already have?

Copy the files from the CD to a USB drive and then utilize the USB drive to install the software.

  • Tiger Install disc copy

I have 3 G4s, and the problem here is that I want to upgrade my Quicksilver 733 MHz from Panther to Tiger.
I'm trying to install my copy of OS 10.4 , an install disc copy of the OS that came with my second MDD when I bought it second hand, and which, by the way was used to upgrade my first MDD from Panther.
The QS, which was given to me, accepted an upgrade using my OS 10.3 install disc, But what happens when I try the Tiger disc copy is that although I can see the package, and a dmg opens with the install icon, It always returns to just that, no matter what I try - restarting with C key, clicking on the install icon,or attempting to restart with disc from System Preferences. I'm not able to install.
Is there a workaround? Worst comes to worse, could I clone Tiger from the machine it works on and somehow apply it to the QS?
    many thanks,
    K

I have 3 G4s, and the problem here is that I want to upgrade my Quicksilver 733 MHz from Panther to Tiger.
You have to buy a retail (black) Tiger install DVD.
I'm trying to install my copy of OS 10.4 , an install disc copy of the OS that came with my second MDD when I bought it second hand,
THe install disc that ships with a MDD will only work with a MDD.
and which, by the way was used to upgrade my first MDD from Panther.
and which, by the way, violated the license agreement.
    Is there a workaround?
    Yes; buy the correct disc.

  • Myriad of issues since trying to install Tiger with a defective disc.

Some time ago I tried to install Tiger and got the messge the disc was damaged. I went back to Apple and they tried to install their copy and in the process my iPhoto got all fouled up. They recovered the library (somewhat) and we decided not to install Tiger until I backed up my machine. Some time later I brought my external drive in and we backed up the user and then tried to rebuild the iPhoto library. By the time I had to leave, my iPhoto was still showing white thumbnails on 30% of my library. I tried to rebuild it yesterday and like the previous time, iPhoto quite unexpectedly. See my posted question at iPhoto4 - Tried rebuilding iPhoto library twice, both time iPhoto "unexpectedly quit"
Just got back from the Apple store and their solution to the iPhoto issue agreed with Brie Fly's post of:
Move the two recent rebuild attempts from Pictures to the trash. Temporarily move your original iPhoto Library folder to the desktop. Start iPhoto and choose "Create New..." from the dialog. Quit iPhoto.
Drag the iPhoto Library folder from the desktop, and drop it inside the newly created iPhoto Library folder in Pictures (put it inside; don't replace).
Now start iPhoto again while holding the shift+option keys to try another rebuild.
The Genius folks at the Apple store suggested that I also Archive and Install to see if I have a corrupt user file. I decided to back up my user first and this is where I got....
Dragged user to desktop icon of external drive, while it was "preparing to copy" it stopped with the message:
"One or more items have special permissions and cannot be copied. Do you want to skip them?" I'd expect one of the choices to be "Yes" but curiously the two choices were "Stop" and "Replace". (symantics!) I chose "Replace" and almost immediately I got the message:
"The operation cannot be completed because the item "Installer" is locked." I then click the only button offered, "Ok was the only choice to click upon doing so the operation is ceased.
I didn't know the Installer could be locked, how it became that way nor how to unlock it!

Wow, has this stumped the experts?

You will first have to install the OS that shipped with the Mac. After that, you can upgrade it to Mavericks.

  • Installing Panther on an old iMac

I have a very old iMac. One of the CRT display ones which came in 5 or 6 different colours. I want to install Panther, OS X on it.
I have the installation discs for the OS from an iBook G4, but am not sure if these are CDs or DVDs? I only have a CD drive in the iMac and my only other PCs are PCs and not macs.
Can anyone tell me if I can get the OS installed on the iMac, if it will work ok and if I need to re-write the discs if they are DVDs to CDs?
Basically I need help and any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks team!

    Scott,
    Welcome to discussions.
The discs that you require will be CDs. As already noted, you will not be able to use the grey discs from an iBook G4 to install OSX 10.3 onto your old iMac G3.
So the good news is that OSX 10.3 retail CDs come up every week or so on eBay UK. Some go for a few quid, but if you get a quiet week (perhaps with the auction ending during a big footie match on TV) they can go for £0.99.
You'll need to prepare by making sure:
    - you have enough memory in the iMac G3,
    - you have a big enough disk in the iMac,
    - you've applied all the required firmware updates to the iMac - this is critical, the earliest iMacs blew their video card if upgraded to OSX 10.2 or later without upgrading the firmware.
    - you understand that the iMac may crawl with OSX 10.3.9 on it.
The earliest iMac G3's, from 233MHz to about 500MHz will feel like treacle, the 700MHz models will just be bearable.
If you're just trying to get some use out of an old Mac fine, but if you have a real use for it, consider picking up an eMac G4, up to about a 1.25GHz G4, for under £40 on eBay. Look for one with keyboard, mouse and original discs. Some may be on offer at £100+, but they're only worth £40 Max. Edinburgh / Glasgow gumtree have them all the time too, usually overpriced, but at least you can haggle.
