Trying to install classic on Os 10.4. Boot Cd freezes

Wonder if anyone can help me. I have bought a g4 quicksilver ( upgraded to 1.8ghz sonnet processer}.It runs OS 10.4 fine..I need to install classic to get my Digidesign Pro Tools 001 to work. Classic is not installed on machine.I follow the help files and try to boot from the 0s 9 Cd that I have - it starts fine but then freezes maybe 80% of the way through.
I bought second hand 10.4 came pre installed and I dont seem to have a dvd of 10.4.
Im really rather stuck and would appreciate any help. Im a relative novice on Macs.
many thanks
Martin

You might have to remove the Sonnet processor and put the original Apple CPU in to get it to boot from that OS 9 CD.
Buy Tiger from Apple. It is important to be able to (re)install your OS if necessary.

  • Trying to install classic system on iMac G5

    Hello,
I just purchased an old iMac G5 with OS X 10.3.9 and I want to install OS 9.1 classic in order to run old programs.
I have the iMac system software CD and the 4 restore CD.  I understand that I am suppose to start the computer
by inserting the install CD and holding the "C" key during startup.  I have done this and the computer is not starting
from the CD.  After startup when running installer I get the error, "Classic cannot update files in "System Folder" on
iMac Install CD because the disk is read-only.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

XPostFacto helps you get around required routines in your Mac's ROMs that are not present on certain older Macs. It is not needed to install 10.2 Jaguar on an iMac -- Apple supports 10.2 Jaguar on iMacs. I have used it to install 10.3 Panther on beige G3s, which Apple declined to support. It works well for what it does, but it is not magic.
Be sure you have updated the firmware in your iMac before trying to install Mac OS X. The firmware updater requires a Hard Drive-based OS 8 or 9 to run, and cannot be run just from a CD.
60384- About iMac Firmware Update 1.2 Document and Software
Mac OS X is BIG. It will install over 200,000 files by default. A Hard drive under 4 GB will probably be too small for practical use. It will probably need more than 64 MB memory just to boot from the CD, never mind actually install. You will undoubtedly need more RAM memory.
The original Bondi Blue iMac makes installing memory particularly complicated. You need to remove and dis-assemble the system unit (containing the motherboard, Hard Drive, and CD) and then remove the processor module and install laptop SODIMMs into slots on the processor card. There is a good step-by-step illustrated manual available on this site, and there may also be a quicktime movie.

  • Trying to install OSX.4 sys stalls when booting from dvd

I've read many of the discussions on this topic. Some are close but none are exactly like the problem I am encountering. I have a Power Mac G4 that was running OS9.2 and I've been trying to install OSX.4. I've tried every possible combination of starting from the dvd but it dones the same thing at the same point everytime. It restarts from the disk, I get the gray screen with the apple logo and the spinning wheel. It will run like this for about a minute or two and then freeze. I can't force quit and I have to restart. I thought it needed a firmware update so I checked the links (I had seen on some of the posts) but it looks like it's a machine that doesn't need one. But I'm not 100% sure how to tell.
I then went back and started with OSX and OSX.2 and they installed fine. I thought it would have to be installed progressively. But I still have the same issue. I am doing an erase and install with each upgrade. The software is a full retail version for each upgrade as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Michel,
Be aware that you can only use an external firewire disk as boot volume since USB is not a bootable interface with MacOS X on PPC-based computers.
The message you receive is o.k. Insert the Install DVD and reboot while holding down the c-key. This will boot you directly from the CD to the installer application. Once you selected the language, select disk utility from the MENU, select your External drive and format it as "Apple Extended (Journaled)".
Quit disk utility and proceed with the installation. Make sure you select the external drive as destination!
When you have to reboot you will boot to the internal disk again. That's o.k. Open disk utility and repair the external disk and also permissions on the external. Next download and install the Mac OS X Update 10.3.9 (Combo). (you are still booted from the internal hard disk, so you will not be prompted for a restart).
Now restart and hold down the Option-key during boot. In the boot-manager you can select the external disk as boot volume. If your computer booted o.k. you made it! Just remember to Repair permissions before and after an update!

  • Hi i am trying to install windows to my macbook through boot camp and i get this message Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server.!!!what can i do???please help me!

Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server. this is the message that i get a few days now that i am trying to install windows through boot camp to my macbook!does anybody knows what i can do????

You keep it on the usb stick for after you boot into Windows. From Windows you install the Windows Support software on the stick. Do you realize that you need to buy and install Windows? The Windows Support software you downloaded is only the Windows drivers for your hardware.
Read the Boot Camp installation instructions and help guides located here: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

  • Trying to install Classic in OS 10.4.3

    Hi,
The CD that came with the lap top is OS 10. I dont have any cds that is older than OS 10. I am unable to run many of the application without the Classic Environment. I am unable to run even small applications or for that matter install any study software from CD's.
I need this urgently coz i have some exams coming up soon. Can somebody please help me how i can resolve this.
The CDs came with the system are OS 10. Its unable to locate the systems folder for classic environment.
    Thanks
    SVivek

svivek, all X installer sets that ship with any Mac contain either Classic or pure OS 9 installers but it matters which X you have, and for which Mac.
Early versions had separate OS 9 install disks; middle-aged versions incorporated the 9 installers with X, often on Disk 2; later versions have 9 installers for Classic only - not pure bootable OS 9 - often on an Additional Software disk…

  • Trying to Install S.L ... Grey Screen Freezes

I'm trying to update to Snow Leopard, and can't get through the install.
The install disk loads properly, I go through all the prompts, and installation begins properly. About 10 minutes in, the computer restarts, and loads up the grey page with apple icon. Here it freezes and sticks on this screen until I restart the computer.
There must be something simple I'm doing wrong or a simple fix, but I can't find it. Help! Anyone?

Where did you get the installer disk from? What Mac are you installing on running which OS?

    Decent prices, there.
Things to note: 32-bit XP only recognizes 3.5 GB RAM.  64-bit XP Home recognizes 16 GB RAM.  64-bit Pro recognizes 192 GB RAM.
If you have Core2Duo or better processor you have 64-bit system.

  • Problem installing Classic Support on Tiger

I'm trying to install Classic support on my iBook. The install appears to complete. It says it did anyway.
When I double click on a classic app I get this error:
"The Operation could not be completed.
An unexpected error occurred (error code -1)."
There also seems to be no preference panel for Classic like there should be.
I'm thinking that the install actually did not complete but I can't figure out why.
I saw this in the install.log file when I tried installing it but I don't know if it is relevent:
"Package Authoring Error: Infinite loop between <choice> attributes and mixed state aborted."
I tried repairing permissions but it didn't appear to do anything.
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • Trying to Install Windows 8.1 on Bootcamp

I'm trying to install Windows 8.1 disk using Boot Camp Assistant and USB SuperDrive. When i have "Download the latest Windows support software from apple" selected this is what happens.
If I unselect "Download the latest Windows support software from apple" and continue, I get to the "Creat a partitian for Windows" page. After choosing how much space for Windows to have and clicking install, this is what happens.
Then I go back and the process happens all over again. What do I do?

This is one of the reasons why I never used BootCamp after testing it once in 2009. I got VMWare Fusion and never looked back. Now I use Parallels, but I still would rather have a VM of Windows than have to reboot and basically cut myself off from OS X while doing Windows stuff.
Seriosuly, you should check it out: http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/

  • Trying to Install Printer

I have an HP Deskjet 840C Series printer that I've been using for 5-6 years and I'm trying to install it on my new MacBook Pro. When I try to open the install app I get a message telling me the "Classical" is no longer supported. Am I going to have to buy a new printer or is there a way around this?

The most recent Mac driver for the 840C was released in 2007 for OS X 10.5. Download it here:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us &prodNameId=19045&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=25399&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvO ID=4019
Install it instead of the ancient OS 9-based driver you've been trying to install. It may or may not be compatible with Snow Leopard. If it doesn't work, you may indeed need a new printer, because HP's failure to update the driver since the release of Snow Leopard 8 months ago doesn't bode well for you.

  • HELP - How do you install classic without erasing OS 10.4.8

Please help....I just replaced my PowerBook G4 with a new MacBook and would like to pass the G4 down to my daughter. Most of the games that she uses are in classic from her old Imac. My G4 came with classic but I had to reinstall OSX a while ago and never put classic back in. I can't get it to boot from any OS CD that I have, please advise.
    Thanks,

    Hi FKTS,
The Classic files for your PowerBook G4 are on the original install DVD that came with it.
A Panther (10.3.x) install set of DVD/CDs most probably?
Anyway, insert this original install disc, and look for "Classic Support" installer, something like that.
    Double-click, follow the prompts.
Classic will get installed without changing anything to the existing Tiger installation, just like it would do with the original OS (Panther or Jaguar?).
If you don't find anything like "Classic Support Something":
Some original installations came through a first step of installing an additional software installer (example my iMac G4).
    - No problem: In that case, you'll have to double-click the Mac OS X installation icon first, then instead of reinstalling Mac OS X, you'll find your way to a Custom Installation of additional/bundled software.
    Proceed to install Classic.
Here too, it'll get installed without modifying your OS (whether it is the original one or your newly installed Tiger).
    Have fun!

  • I tried to install ios7 last night and the screen is now on itunes with the usb symbols  Plugged the ipod into the laptop where itunes is stored.  Tried to restore only to be advised that a 3194 error has occured  cannot get any further please help!!

Hi. The two user tips both describe a sequence of steps that should get your library from the point where it threatens to wipe data from your device to where it is syncing normally, while recovering as much information as possible. It may still be necessary to wipe and reload the device but this should only take place once all the data that can be recovered has been recovered.
Doing step 1 of 8 and then complaining things aren't the way you want them to be yet strikes me as premature...
Since you appear to have all your media content, and we are discussing an iPod classic, not an iOS device, the main worries are already taken care of. What's left is ratings, playcounts, playlist membership and checked status. Since your device holds only part of your library at best you could only recover the missing data for the content that is on the device using third party tools.
Recreating the previous checked/unchecked status of every track in your library from where you are now may not be that easy. Syncing with selected playlists has many advantages, one of which would have been that you would have a named playlist that could have been retrieved by 3rd party software if you had used this method.
You haven't explained what caused your problem in the first place, but if you have a Previous iTunes Libraries folder holding old copies of your iTunes database (generated with each iTunes update) then it would be possible to restore the most recent of these and then update the library with any changes in your media folder.
BTW Apple doesn't offer free support for this kind of issue with iTunes.
