Trying to install classic system on iMac G5

Hello,
I just purchased an old iMac G5 with OS X 10.3.9 and I want to install OS 9.1 classic in order to run old programs.
I have the iMac system software CD and the 4 restore CD.  I understand that I am suppose to start the computer
by inserting the install CD and holding the "C" key during startup.  I have done this and the computer is not starting
from the CD.  After startup when running installer I get the error, "Classic cannot update files in "System Folder" on
iMac Install CD because the disk is read-only.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

XPostFacto helps you get around required routines in your Mac's ROMs that are not present on certain older Macs. It is not needed to install 10.2 Jaguar on an iMac -- Apple supports 10.2 Jaguar on iMacs. I have used it to install 10.3 Panther on beige G3s, which Apple declined to support. It works well for what it does, but it is not magic.
Be sure you have updated the firmware in your iMac before trying to install Mac OS X. The firmware updater requires a Hard Drive-based OS 8 or 9 to run, and cannot be run just from a CD.

Mac OS X is BIG. It will install over 200,000 files by default. A Hard drive under 4 GB will probably be too small for practical use. It will probably need more than 64 MB memory just to boot from the CD, never mind actually install. You will undoubtedly need more RAM memory.
The original Bondi Blue iMac makes installing memory particularly complicated. You need to remove and dis-assemble the system unit (containing the motherboard, Hard Drive, and CD) and then remove the processor module and install laptop SODIMMs into slots on the processor card. There is a good step-by-step illustrated manual available on this site, and there may also be a quicktime movie.

  • Trying to install software on new iMac

I have just bought a new iMac, OS X 10.9.  I tried to install my Illustrator 10 software and received the following message - You can't open Illustrator 10 because powerPC applications are no longer supported.
What do I do now? Can anyone advise me please?

Illustrator 10 operates in your old OS under Rosetta, with the new iMac running the OS which will not support Rosetta you can't run Illustrator 10. If you browse to the Illustrator 10 application icon does it have a circle slash over the icon? You will need to run Illustrator 10 on a system that supports Rosetta, or upgrade your Illustrator software.

  • I am trying to install Lion on my imac and it says it can't make a recovery disk

I am trying to install lion and receive a message saying it can't make a recovery disk.  I am using a 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac.  I do have bootcamp on it, but was never able to install Windows.

What happens when Lion installs is it creates a Lion Recovery Partition at the very bottom area of the drive, this is used to Command R boot into and perform Disk Utility Repairs and reinstall Lion from Apple's servers much like a 10.6 disk will.
So when you ran the Lion installer, it couldn't create this small partiiton, either because the GUID partition table (the map of your paartitions on the drive) is borked or there is data all the way to the bottom of the drive or OS X thinks there is.
You set up the bootcamp parittion, so run that and delete the Bootcamp partition as your not using it or Windows, once it's finished reboot and try installing Lion again.
I should warn you, Lion will not run your Rosetta based software or hardware drivers for external hardware, you may have to purchase all new versions. Not only that, hardware drivers may not be available for 10.7 thus rendering your third party printers, scanners etc useless.
Before you install Lion, you should consult this web page
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
to see if your current programs will break and when to expect a new version (likely paid)
Also you shoudl check your hardware and the makers site if there is a 10.7 compatible driver/software for them.
And once you think your ready to go to Lion, get a blank external powered drive and a free/donationware copy of Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your present (non-Filevault) 10.6 boot drive to the external drive.
Later if 10.7 doesn't work for you, simply hold the option key and boot off the 10.6 clone, use Disk Utility to Erase the entire drive (the whole drive!) and reverse clone 10.6 back onto the internal drive.

  • Trying to install Windows 7 on iMac Mountain Lion - Pain

    Hey all,
I am having hard times trying to install Windows 7 (64 bits) on my iMac.
Have followed every steps (Boot Camp and Apple guides, checked the forums here, etc.); made the partition, downloaded the drivers onto an empty and FAT formatted USB hard disk, etc., and all that worked fast and easy.
The problem starts when it comes to install W7 (Superdrive built in so it's in a DVD): after I choose the language, right away it says "No drivers found". It supposes to ask for the drivers after the installation but it does the opposite. I have checked the drivers one by one and it recognizes some of them, but when it tries to load them a new windows pops up repeating the same "No drivers found" thing.
I even modified Boot Camp so now it can burn a ISO image onto a USB drive. Downloaded and tried another W7 version but it was worse ("no bootable device" message...)
Have checked many other threads like this, vids, etc., but have found no solution so far. Apple's help definitely *****... And this supposes to be cake. Have spent days on this and nothing.
Just in case, all I have used on this is Boot Camp (updated, 5.0.4) and everything else on my computer is updated also. Don't have any VM, nothing like that.
Don't know how to solve this and install Windows on my computer. Please somebody help me. I am far from being a tech so will appreciate your patience on descriptions. Thanks!

There are various guides for installation and compatibility on the Apple support site for Bootcamp, did you download and read them?
I have only installed Windows once with Bootcamp, that was Windows 8, I followed the instructions and it worked ok but there seems a few items that you need to be aware of, it is all in the manuals, Apple suggest you print them off for reference.
That is about as much as I can tell you.

  • I tried to instal lion but my iMac says "install fail because hard drive is damaged and can't be repaired" and my only option is to restart and it immediately tries to download it again, won't let me back to any other screen.  Is there anything I can do?

I am trying to install Lion and I keep getting a fail message that says "Mac OS X could not be installed because the disk Hard Drive is damaged and can't be repaired". It only gives me the option to restart to try again but fails every time, an no other option.   Is there anything I can do?

I'll guess that you're upgrading from Snow Leopard? You should be able to start using your original install dvd by inserting the disc and restarting while holding the C key. Run Disk Utility from your install disc  and try to repair the drive. Then try the upgrade again.

Im really rather stuck and would appreciate any help. Im a relative novice on Macs.
    many thanks

You might have to remove the Sonnet processor and put the original Apple CPU in to get it to boot from that OS 9 CD.
Buy Tiger from Apple. It is important to be able to (re)install your OS if necessary.

  • New iMac, migrated from macbook and now mail won't work. Tried re-installing operating system, still doesn't work. Can anyone help me to get mail working? thanks

I just bought a new iMac and I thought that it would be simple to migrate from my MacBook.
I have a time machine back-up so I decided to migrate using that. Everything seemed to instal pretty well with the exception of mail.  To begin with I had 2 mail icons, then I started to read some forums and checked that i had the one I wanted in the applications folder, deleted the other and then downloaded the new operating system.  Mail had to be force quit first and even when the download was complete Mail still wouldn't open or run. The only thing I can do is compose a new message, but I can't see my inbox at all.
It's really frustrating and I would love to know in a simple step by step guide how to get mail up and running with my existing migrated emails in it.
If anyone can give me some advice that would be great.
    thanks in advance.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

  • Trying to install Classic in OS 10.4.3

    Hi,
The CD that came with the lap top is OS 10. I dont have any cds that is older than OS 10. I am unable to run many of the application without the Classic Environment. I am unable to run even small applications or for that matter install any study software from CD's.
I need this urgently coz i have some exams coming up soon. Can somebody please help me how i can resolve this.
The CDs came with the system are OS 10. Its unable to locate the systems folder for classic environment.
    Thanks

svivek, all X installer sets that ship with any Mac contain either Classic or pure OS 9 installers but it matters which X you have, and for which Mac.
Early versions had separate OS 9 install disks; middle-aged versions incorporated the 9 installers with X, often on Disk 2; later versions have 9 installers for Classic only - not pure bootable OS 9 - often on an Additional Software disk…

  • Trying to install Lightroom on a iMac, iOS 10.9.5, launching the program is unsuccessful, results in a crash report

After installing LR5, I try to launch the program but I receive a message saying LR5 has unexpectedly quit. Anyone who can help with this issue?
This is part of the crash report:
    Application Specific Information:
*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'LuaRunException', reason: 'AgPathUtils.getStandardFilePath: can't create directory at: /Users/kjetilstubbberud/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom'
terminating with uncaught exception of type NSException
    abort() called

while I can download it I cannot install it.
What happens when you try?  How much free space do you have on your boot drive? In preparation to installation I booted into Maverick's Recovery volume and repaired both the disk permissions and disk. Then I ran the Yosemite installer. Give that a try and see if it helps.

  • Install classic on a Non-OS X iMac - run on new PB?

    Hello!
I have reciently been messing with my old iMac G3 DV (192ram, 60GB, 400mhz, 9.2.2), and am curious about running it in target mode.
I currently have Classic installed on my 15" PB, running 10.4.4, and it works fine. However, i'm running out of hard disk space, and would like to remove classic, and my old OS 9 apps to save room.
I have my iMac connected to my power book via FireWire target mode, and can run software stored on my iMac's hard drive on Classic in my PB. Is it possible, to install classic on my imac, or (preferably) use 9.2.2 already on my iMac, to run classic apps? for ease of switching input/output devices, i'd like to be able to at least display them on my PB.
I guess what i'm asking is if i can use the iMac like a HD , and run OS 9 directly off of it, kinda like booting OS X via FireWire hard drive.
Is this possible, or am i just daydreaming?
    -Dan

    To answer:
No, not at the time. When it crashed, I was using the IMac as an iMac. That's how I usually do it.
What exactly is a TDM link, anyway?
    Oops, TCP/IP Control panel.
About iMovie - Most go to the 120. I keep some of the compressed MPEG-4s on my main, but usually they're on the external. When I'm working on movie in DV, however, I sometimes have to keep it on the main - it slows down if you have too many clips - can't transfer quick enough via USB, I guess.
It's not as much of a challenge as you think - I've got 50 G used right now.
around 1.6G go to the system, (folder), 6Gig for applications, around 9G for application support (when they say 10G for iLife 06, they're not kidding! - it's mostly themes, Garageband loops, and other doodads). Then there's 1.5 for the developer tools, ~3G for documents, (~2.5 of which is Virtual PC) 7 Gig for iPhoto (when I only have 5 G of photos - hm...), 15.5 G of music, another 3 G for the library. Who knew that backup had a 500 MB cache? There's 800 Meg of emails (and attachments - soon to be deleted!), and more garageband loops... O.o
    It goes quick!
About the PB locations: Yep, I try to find spots with power too. However, I'm on a college campus - walking 4-5 miles a day. It's also 100 degrees today - HDD's don't like that, or the shaking. When I do find a spot, it's usually in the library, student union, or food court. None are good places for an extra HDD.
In any case, I don't need the HDD during most days - I'm at school, after all - but its nice to be able to work on iMovie during my off time at lunch monday (2 hours! :D) That's why my old Clickwheel is so useful - it carries most of my current projects around - and enough music for the walk - and is very portable.
It's not a lot of things that don't work - most do - particularly the assigned sites. However, the discs that come with new text books don't usually work with Mac. Ran into that trouble while doing practice exercises...
