Trying to install drivers into OS9

Hi,
I have a G5 and cannot start up in OS9. I just purchased an Epson R300 which works great in Tiger, but does not work in OS9.
I was using an Epson Color 880 which worked great in both systems. I called Epson, and they said that to install the drivers, you have to start up in OS9. I explained that I can't. He said, "Too bad. Call Apple." So here I am, trying to figure out how to get the drivers appropriately placed into the shell.
Help!
Victor
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   dual processor. OS 9.2.2

Hi, Victor. I understand your frustration and annoyance, but you have to try to see the matter from Apple's and Epson's perspective.
For Apple, allowing new computers to boot into OS 9 would mean severely curtailing the technological advances they incorporate. Many of those advances aren't and couldn't be supported by OS 9: it just doesn't have the chops to allow them. Picture trying to design a new automobile under the requirement that it must be able to burn wood, and you'll have some idea what Apple would face in trying to design new computers that will run OS 9.
As for Epson, all of its products are being designed principally for current operating systems now, and OS 9 is far from current. If Epson decides to write an OS 9 driver for a printer, count your blessings: it would have been much easier for them to ignore OS 9 altogether. The number of OS 9 users who aren't able to boot their machines into that OS is probably a very small fraction of the total number of OS 9 users — which is itself shrinking all the time, as more Mac users either upgrade to OS X or buy computers that can't boot into it. Epson has accommodated all the OS 9 users who are able to boot OS 9 by offering installers for many of its OS 9 printer drivers. Only the small number of OS 9 users whose new Macs can't boot into OS 9 to run that installer are left out in the cold — and then only if they can't find an OS 9-bootable Mac on which to use the procedure I outlined above.
That you find yourself in that tiny minority is certainly unfortunate, and I sympathize. One consequence may be that if you care enough about using your printer in Classic mode, you'll decide to look in some creative places for an older Mac you could borrow to meet your needs: a public library, a school computer lab, a Mac user group nearby, a thrift store that has old Macs, etc. There's got to be a way for you to get it done, if you want to badly enough. Good luck!

  • Windows trying to install drivers for iPod...

So here's my problem. Whenever I try to connect my girlfriend's iPod, Windows XP trys to recognize a new device and the driver installation wizard pops up.
I get a popup on the taskbar and Windows tries to install a driver for the iPod. If I cancel the installation it tells me the installation failed and there may be a problem with the device. The same thing happens if I allow the installation to continue as Windows in unable to find the correct driver.
The iPod shows up in Device Manager with an exclamation point. It does not appear in Windows Explorer or iTunes.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I have tried the 5R's to no effect. I have tried everything I can find in the support articles relating to iPods not being recognized in Windows or iTunes.

ipods use the standard Windows USB mass storage drivers. it is possible for those to go walkabout on a PC ... if that's what is happening here, the techniques from the following MarkJones post may be of some assistance:

  • I have a 750 GB SS Hard Drive that was in my Macbook pro 15", i am trying to install it into my new Macbook 13" and when i power it, the apple sign comes on but stays on that screen. Can anyone tell me what Steps i missed.

I need help trying to get my Macbook Pro 13 to bootup.

The software that comes from the factory, pre-installed has always only contained the drivers for that specific model and no others.
If you want to install on a different model Mac, you need to have the original installation DVD or go back to Recovery_HD and download again.
Your 13" and 15" have somewhat different Hardware, and you need the correct version for that model or a purchased or downloaded version to proceed.

  • Trying to install drivers for Lexmark X4650

I've downloaded the RPM based drivers for this printer from Lexmark and am now trying to get it working with CUPS.
I created a PKGBUILD based on one of the other LEXmark driver examples. makepkg completes successfully and gives me a package but, after installing, this package doesn't seem to make any difference to CUPS...  In particular I'm hoping to see it listed in the printers available when setting up a printer.

  • D'oh! What fool am I - stuck CD trying to install OSX over OS9 on old iMac.

Have just been given a turqouise(?) iMac which was running OS9 perfectly well.
Never having used anything other than OS X I decided to try installing that to the iMac using the OS X install discs that came with my MacBook. What a disaster! So far OS X is not installed - probably no surprise?
On boot-up I get the chimes, then the Mac hangs. The first and last lines of a fairly long message are:
    First Line:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002E54BC): Unable to find driver for this platform: PowerMac2,1
    Last line:
    Kernel version:
    Darwin Kernel Version 8.8.3 Wed Oct 18 22:00:38 PDT 2006; root:xnu-792.15.4.obj~4/Release_PPC panic. We are hanging here . . .
And the OSX install disc won't eject. I've tried all the various combinations mentioned on other posts to get a stuck disc out - all to no avail.
Have I wrecked this iMac? Can I fix it - how? Can I get my install disc out without taking a hammer to the iMAc?
Any words of wisdom (and/or admonishment) gladly received.
    Regards,
    David
Black MacBook 2.1, iMac G4, Turqouise iMac G?? Mac OS X (10.4.9) Think I've killed the Turqouise iMac. Shame on me.

The usual remedy for ejecting a CD is to turn the computer off, then start up as usual while holding the mouse button down.
If that works, you should update the firmware on the iMac. This will help:

After that, try installing X in the usual way.

  • OSX CD not being read in Windows XP SP3 while trying to install drivers

I have this very frustrating problem of after smoothly installing windows XP SP3 on my Snow leopard 24" Imac, as soon as I pop in the Leopard CD to install the drivers.. nothing.
The CD drive just says CD ROM E:/, it recognizes that there is a CD in there but it does nothing and its blank.. When I explore it looks like a blank CD and can't run setup.exe or anything.
Tried with a couple of different OSX CDs and still no luck.
    Annything that I am missing?

I have solved this problem. I have 2 Snow leopard disks, 1 I bought myself for my MacBook and 1 that came with the unit. It turns out the one that came with the unit (used machine..very good though) is a copy and cannot be read in any instance. I tried the copy I bought and everything went with out a glitch and all is working fine.

  • HELP!!!  I am trying to install actions into pse 13, which I have done several times before and I can't find my media database.db3 file to delete to get them to load.  I have totally uninstalled pse13 and reinstalled and still having the same problem.  I

    Anyone?

Are you aware that you can just load them into the actions panel by going to window>actions, then clicking the four lined square on the panel and choosing Load Actions from the menu? You don't have to put them into the effects panel anymore and there's no deleting mediaDatabase.db3 that way.
If you really need them in the effects panel for some reason (like for add-on tools) you are probably not finding the right  library. The library at the top level of your hard drive isn't exactly hidden in recent versions of OS X, but it's very hard to get to it. The easiest way is to go to the finder preferences>sidebar and turn on Show Hard Disks. Then when you open a new finder window your hard drive will be in the list on the left side of the window. Click it and the library you want will be at the top level of results on the right side. But the actions panel is much easier.

Just got an Photosmart 5520 e-all-in-one and when in look at the list of OS to choose from I don't see 6.1.3 which is the version listed for my IPad

Scanning from the front panel only support computers, to scan from iOS you will need to initiate a scan from the HP Printer Control app from the iOS itself:

    Hi @GoddessDiamond,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that you are trying to install drivers for your HP Officejet G85 printer on Windows 7. I am happy to help!
Please take a look through this installation guide, Installing the Printer Driver Using the Windows 7 Built-in Solution for a USB Cable Connection.
Otherwise, if that does not work, you can try to download the Windows XP driver, HP Officejet Basic Software and Driver, and run it using compatibility mode. Make older programs run in this version of Windows.
If neither of those two options work, then the last step is to try an alternative driver, please see this post, How to Assign Alternate Print Drivers in Different Versions of Windows, by @Shane_R.
Hope this information resolves your issue, and have a good day!

    Hello luvridinghorses!
I will do my best to help you to get your printer printing again. Based on the information you have provided, the error indicates the installation is looking for a folder in your "temp" files which is where downloads go. I think you may have success using the software disc that came with the printer if you still have it.  Give it a try and if that doesn't help you, what is the operating system of the computer you are trying to install this printer on and what is the printer's IP address?
Don't forgot to say thanks by giving "Kudos" if I helped solve your problem.
When a solution is found please mark the post that solves your issue.
