Trying to install Gnome 3
Hi, I am trying to install G3 but I am having a bit of an issue.
Every thing downloads ok but when it finally checks for file conflicts I get this error:
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)

What do I need to do to fix this?
It's a problem with Wicd, normally you can force update wicd and after that install gnome as you would normally do.
pacman -Syy
pacman -Sf wicd

Problems after trying to install gnome-session-compiz
Hi, as explained here i've installed gnome-session-compiz, but i forgot to install compiz-fusion before that.
now, if I try pacman -S compiz-fusion-gtk, pacman outputs something like this (i'm translating from italian):
Warning: impossible to resolve "compiz-core=0.9.2", a dependency of "compizconfig-python"
Warning: impossible to resolve "libcompizconfig=0.9.2", a dependency of "compizconfig-python"
:: The following packages can't be updated due to unsolvable dependencies:
ccsm fusion-icon
Do you want to ignore these packages for this update? [y/N]
If I press "y" pacman downloads and installs only these packages:
compizconfig-backend-gconf-0.8.4-1 compiz-bcop-0.8.4-1
compiz-fusion-plugins-main-0.8.6-1
compiz-fusion-plugins-extra-0.8.6-2 emerald-0.8.4-2
emerald-themes-0.6.0-3
which I suppose are the remaining packages of compiz-fusion-gtk.
Before pressing "y" I tried to uninstall gnome-session-compiz (pacman -Rcs gnome-session-compiz) but the result is the same.
What should I do?
Thanks!

Is there a reason why you don't want to install iLife '08?
You can download and install the last version of iMovie HD (from iLife '06), if you have iLife '08 installed. -

Did you try deleting it from the cache and redownloading?

I am trying to install the Gnome wm using Fink, I have gotten some of it installed but I am running into a problem with some of the packages. This is the error message:
OMF file [/sw/share/omf/gpl/gpl-pa.omf] does not validate against ScrollKeeper-OMF DTD: /sw/share/xml/scrollkeeper/dtds/scrollkeeper-omf.dtd. I also got a similar OMF error when I tried to install Gnome themes and applets. Any ideas? Thank you.Post it to the fink users email list. It is very active and you will get advice and/or the package will get fixed quickly.

Having soem troubles installing gnome-main-menu-svn (SLAB) installed from the AUR using yaourt. After getting all the dependencies figured out, there still seems to be problems.

How do I use this? It doesn't appear in the applets menu

Never mind. This removes dbus-sharp after the installation, and then requires it as a dependency. I missed the message

current revision (451) doesn't work with networkmanager 0.6.6 from extra. Revision 401 from http://svn.gnome.org/svn/gnome-main-menu/branches/gnome-2-22/ works for now.

Any help is appreciated. I really love that menu!I ran yaourt as root to install gnome-main-menu-svn, and it got past that part. Looks like that was a problem with permissions that also needs to be fixed.
Now its telling me that I don't have a high enough version of libnm-glib, it is asking for >= 0.7.0, and I have 0.6.6. I checked the the repos and there does not seem to be a 0.7.0 version or higher available. A suggestion on the gnome-main-menu-svn package page makes a suggestion, but Im not sure how to go about it
current revision (451) doesn't work with networkmanager 0.6.6 from extra. Revision 401 from http://svn.gnome.org/svn/gnome-main-men … nome-2-22/ works for now.
So I either need to get revision 401 from the svn instead, or get networkmanager and its libs at version 0.7.0
How could I go about doing any of these things. I am not familiar with SVN, so go easy on me.
EDIT:
I found a package called networkmanager-beta which seems to be version 0.7.0. Trying to install that with yaourt is unsuccessful as well.

Also had to do yaourt as root to get that far. Why is it that when you use yaourt as root, it advises you to switch to a normal user, and then the packages will not install correctly unless you do?
So far I have been very turned off by the AUR

Trying to load and install gnome
I have tried to load and install gnome for thge past three(3) days with no success. If this is what Arch linux is all about then its lost on me. Anybody want to change my mind?
this is an example of how not to ask a question.. first. if you want to leave go ahead, no one is holding you back.. second obviously, trying to "load and install gnome for the past three(3) days with no success" is not what archlinux is about.. having said that..
you need to install xorg
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg
and the you need to install gnome
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gnome
next you add a login screen or configure your .xinitrc
i can only tell you this as you provide no useful information or say _specifically_ what your problem is -
Can't login after fresh installing gnome using gdm 3.2 [SOLVED]
I don't know if this topic was already solved, I hope someone can help me about this. I have a fresh install of arch linux (just yesterday) and installed gnome and gnome-extra packages. As usual, I go with the procedure of editing my .xinitrc (exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch gnome-session), rc.conf (...dbus networkmanager...), inittab (runlvl 5, x:5......gdm). After a reboot, gdm screen appeared, I can't find my account, then there were two choices, "Sign in" and "Not listed..."). I clicked Not listed, then entered my user and password, after that, it responded: Authentication failure/failed... or something like that. I tried it again and it's the same. Temporarily, I'm using startx or slim (depends on my mood). Can anyone help me?
here's my gdm's 0.log and 0-greeter.log respectively:

in arch and in general >= 1000 are normal users, < 1000 system users
is that how it works? can i change it from 100 to 1000 or just make a new one?
anyways i'll look to it. -
Question about installing Gnome
Hey everyone. I'm currently a Ubuntu user planning on trying out Arch Linux after my exams are done (in 2 weeks ).
I understand that in order to install Gnome, i need to update pacman using the commands 'pacman -Syu' and 'pacman -Syy'. After this process i can install gnome by using the command 'pacman -S gnome gnome-extra'.
However, one thing that i couldn't find was whether or not this command will install the latest version of Gnome, which i believe is version 2.24.
One other general question i have is, how do i know which version the application i'm trying to install is when the commands are simply 'pacman -S [application name]'?
Thanks for your help.Hrod beraht wrote:

Use pacman -Ss [application name]. The second small 's' means search, so using pacman -Ss gnome would show you everything with 'gnome' in it's name. Among them is gnome-desktop, which shows as version 2.24.2-1

How to install gnome 3 ?
I want to try gnome 3 ,but how to install it in Arch linux. Is there any tutorial? thanks

They're aren't fully adequate instructions on installing gnome 3. There's a few posts from last year, but there's missing dependencies.
If you're like me, you're mainly concerned with trying gnome-shell in which case I would suggest just checking out the wiki article on compiling that. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gnome_Shell
that is not the adequate instruction to get gnome 3 in arch. That only explains how to use jhbuild method and is not the arch way.
the arch way is: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gnome_3 -
[SOLVED] Newbie trying to install Splashtop - libappindicator error!
I'm trying to install Splashtop from the AUR, libappindicator has the dependency libindicator which I can't get to make without errors.
This is the output when I run makepkg -s

Any advice would be appreciated, I'm still learning my way around after too many years in Windows environments!
Thanks.

Updated the gmacros.h file and the make completes fine.
This same fix solved the other dependencies make errors.
Thanks. -
So, this is my first time with arch (after 4 months in Ubuntu), and I followed the beginners guide to a tee.
I started installing gnome, but it was late, and it was taking much longer than expected, so I canceled the installation while stuff was still downloading and went to bed.
I woke up this morning and tried again, pacman -S gnome
It downloads a bunch of files then I get an error: file gtk2-2.14.7-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz is corrupted. Do you want to delete it. I said yes, then I get the error: gtk2-2.14.7-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz is invalid or corrupted.
I tried again, and said no, but I get the same error. You seem to need a better mirror, read http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mirrors , also clear your downloaded packages (cache) before trying again , as root do
pacman -Scc

Hello,
I'm attempting to install gnome-extra. It appears that gnome3 was moved out of testing just this afternoon. When I attempt to install gnome-extra I get this error:
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: gnome-vfs: requires gnome-mime-data
I don't really want to enable testing...don't even know if that would help. Any ideas?
ThanksI tried different mirrors and ran reflector for the latest ones when I set up. Even tried archlinux.org. Filed a bug about it, so that someone might check into it.
Thanks for your suggestions. -
Trying to install Arch Linux on a HP-dv2000 laptop
I am able to start up from, the CD no problem. I get the Arch Linux menu. What I think is the problem is maybe a resolution issue because as I go to install it, the screen looks wonky and I can't see the command line properly. I know when I install Ubuntu for example, the installation screen looks off to one side. Only after installing the nvidia driver after successfully installing Ubuntu does the screen look the way it supposed to.
I think the same think is happening here when trying to install Arch Linux. Any suggestions on how I can resolve this? This is a big deal for me because for the first time, I think I am going to learn a ton of stuff about Arch Linux. I am willing to take the plunge following the beginner's guide along the way.
Thanks for the help!!ArchLinux is designed to run whether in VirtualBox or on a real machine.
If you have a TV connector plugged in it will chop some regular lines at the bottom to make up for the difference in TV resolution.
There are a couple of packages related to nvidia hardware, nouveau is one of them. Just do a pacman -Ss nvidia for possibilities of things you might need to install. Your nvidia hardware is a little newer, so probably nvidia is the package you'll need instead of nouveau.
Are you using X? When you install the proper xf86-video-* driver it shouldn't have any problems with X. If modesetting is turned off, then some resolutions may not be made available (especially in Gnome), so it is best to keep it turned on if at all possible (kernel default).

I've looked all over the settings and web, but there's no option that I can find where the links I've created will show on the reader. Is there an option somewhere where I can choose to have my links showing / outlined on the pages? Thanks!
