Trying to install NAS onto network.

Ok so here is my setup.
Cable Interet that connects to cable modem then goes to Airport Snow Router. From their one line goes to a G5.
All the other computers access wirelessly.
I Purchased a 500GB Lacie Ethernet Disk Mini.
What I want to do is add a NAS but obviously there isn't enough ports on the back of a Snow Airport.
So I bought a Ethernet Switch it has 4 ports total labled 1 1x and 2 2x So now my problem is where do I plug the wires... I have tried several ways and they dont seem to work because my computers don't reconize the server on the network.
Thanks.

If this thing was $20, like I've seen online...I'd return it.
Get a Linksys, DLink, Belkin, Hawking.
Switches are usually 4,5 or 8 ports. Four would work for you.
They're about $30-$50, and will serve you "forever".
You CAN use another router, but yo'd have to configure it with a static IP, disable DHCP...and a few other funky things.
Go with a brandname you can trust.
Too bad Apple didn't put enough ethernet ports on those Airports...enough to be useful. (That's the Apple-basher PC-guy in me...those devices are fine ...just not enough ethernet ports!)

  • Error message when trying to install Mavericks onto macbook pro.

Hi Been trying to install Mavericks onto my macbook pro (10.6.8) but the install fails after 3-5 minutes and I get this error message: *** WARNING: -[NSImage compositeToPoint:fromRect:operation:] is deprecated in MacOSX 10.8 and later. Please use -[NSImage drawAtPoint:fromRect:operation:fraction:] instead.
I have tried to repair the drive through the utility function but I am told it cannot be repaired. I tried the recovery function as well but whilst I am able to select the source (external hard drive with recent time machine backup) the next screen prompts me to select the disk to restore but all it does is search for a drive and there is none there to select.
Really not sure what else to do. Please help!

Well some progress has been made so thought i would post what I did, in case someone experiences the same issue I did and maybe this will be of use to someone else...
Ended up force-shutting my macbook down then switching back on, as soon as the chime could be heard i pressed command R and kept both keys pressed until Recovery mode kicked in.
Internet Recovery came on which took approx 20 minutes (more about this here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718 )
    Then 4 options appeared
    1) recover with time machine back up
    2) set up and install Mac OSX (with the Lion icon and reference to Lion for some reason, I had Snow Leopard to begin with)
    3) get help online
    4) repair or erase disk using disk utility
I decided to attempt to repair the drive but use the verification tool first which said the drive was fine??????!!!
Then clicked on repair disk, this took only a few minutes then it stopped after a couple lines.
While it was "repairing" the button changed to "stop repair" then changed back to "repair" so I took that to mean it had done what had to be done.
Then closed the utility screen whch prompted me to restart macbook after selected a drive to boot up from (only one option came up for me)
Did that and I was back into familiar territory and on my mac as I knew it ie snow leopard.
I did restart macbook just to make sure and it just booted up as normal, to snow leopard with the maverick install icon still showing in the dock.
Panic over. Not sure if / when I will give installing Maverick another try though....

Does your computer meet the requirements for Leopard?
    System requirements
You must have a Macintosh computer with:
an Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 (867 MHz or faster) or G5 processor
    a DVD drive
    built-in FireWire
at least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM is recommended for development purposes)
a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
at least 9 GB of disk space available, or 12 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools

I am trying to install photoshop cs2 onto my new mac and am recieving the error message "You can't open the application monitorAndSublaunch because PowerPC applications are no longer supported" ????

You will have to upgrade, yes, but you have several options:
Buy new full version of Photoshop CS6 (most expensive option). CS2 is too old to qualify for upgrade pricing.
    Buy Photoshop Elements 12

  • MSI GT60 2PC Dominator-- Loads of problems trying to install Win8 onto SSD

    Hi guys,
I really, really hope someone can help me!
I recently purchased GT60 2PC Dominator-626 which is awesome. However, it doesn't come with an SSD so I've got a Crucial M500 which I've installed. I'm trying to move over my Win8 install to this drive so that I can have my OS and most used programs on the SSD, but I've been having sooo many problems in doing this. I've tried using cloning software but no luck, whenever I clone the drive and enter bios or boot menu, it will never boot from the SSD.
What I'd be really happy to do is have a fresh install of Win8 onto the SSD, but when I try to reset my PC using the MSI UEFI settings, i will never give me the option to re-install to the SSD, only the original HD.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thank you!

Well after trying LOADS of different cloning options, I finally found a way to get my SSD work with this laptop:
I opened Burn Recovery from the app page, used that to create 5 x DVD back up of the system.
Then I removed the old HD, leaving only the SSD in. Placed the first recovery disc in and booted from DVD/CD drive.
Followed that process and now I have an install of Win8 with the MSI stuff on my SSD. I then just got Win8 running, inserted the old HD and reformatted it!

  • USB Errors while trying to install 64 bit Arch

I'm trying to install Arch onto some brand new hardware. I am installing using the Arch Netboot environment.
When I try to install 64 bit Arch, I get the following errors straight after archiso.img is downloaded and the kernel is booted:
    usb 2-5: device descriptor read/64, error -32
    usb 2-5: device descriptor read/64, error -32
    usb 2-5: device descriptor read/64, error -32
    usb 2-5: device descriptor read/64, error -32
usb 2-5: device not accepting address 4, error -32
usb 2-5: device not accepting address 5, error -32
hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 5
The same lines appear for usb 4-1, 6-5 and 7-1. The only USB device that is plugged in is the USB key that I booted ipxe.lkrn from.
Googling seems to point to a kernel module that needs to be loaded earlier or a faulty USB controller. I do not know how to change what kernel modules are used during installation, and I'm fairly certain the USB controllers are fine. Its a brand new motherboard and I can access my USB key fine (I can boot from it) in any of the available USB ports.
I was close to giving up until for some reason I decided to try and install the 32 bit version of Arch instead. This worked as expected and I am sent to the archiso installation prompt without seeing any of the same USB errors.
Can someone please assist me with this? I would really prefer to have the 64 bit version installed.

    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=158206
This seems to be related, although my errors are giving error -32 instead of -110.
Is there a way I can force the installation environment to use kernel 3.7.6? Does the 32 bit installer use a different kernel to the 64 bit installer?
Is there a way I can use the 32 bit installation environment to install 64 bit as well as the 3.7.6 kernel?

  • Errors when trying to Install 10g Client on OS X

I was just trying to install 10g on Mac OS X, 10.3.7 and got the following two error messages:
    1) "File not found: %fileName%" when trying to install without the "Networking Utilities".
(When looking at the log file it seems as if during the linking process a file or link /Users/oracle/OraHome1/lib/libclntsh.dylib.10.1 would missing)
    2) Additionally i received "Thrown when the ip address of a host cannot be determined" when trying to also install the "Networking utilities".
Has someone encountered the same problem and came up with a solution ?
    Thanks,
    Dieter

You need a static IP, not a reserved DHCP, a static.
My Ten Step Program to Static IP is:
    1) Double click the Network Icon (two PCs) in the system tray
    2) Click Properties
    3) Highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and then click Properties
    4) Check the "Use the following IP address" radio button
    5) Set IP Address to xxx.xxx.xx.xx ( I use the 4 digit PC number split in two. Make sure a ping of that address times out before you assign to ensure no one else has it)
    6) Subnet mask should default to 255.255.0.0
    7) Set Default Gateway xxx.xxx.xx.x
    8) Set Preferred DNS server to xxx.xxx.xx.x
    9) Set Alternate DNS server to xxx.xxx.xx.x
    10) Grab large bottle of alcohol and enjoy the added functionality of a static IP address.

  • Installing Leopard onto a laptop with a broken internal DVD drive?

I'm trying to install Leopard onto my PowerBook G4 (yes, long past the warranty but she's an old workhorse). The internal DVD "super" drive has been broken for a couple of years, so I've got a nice, fast, solid Sony external USB 2.0 DVD/CD player/burner.
Just now I inserted the install disk into the drive. The disk mounted. Install window popped up automatically. Clicked the button to restart and install... the Mac restarts alright, but there's no installation happening (and no error message to tell me what's happening).
I've been searching the documentation and this forum and so far I'm stumped. Can anyone shed any light on this?
Is it simply impossible to install Leopard from an external USB drive? If so, is there a non-disk method anyone can suggest?

Please post the specs on your g4, lets make sure its possible first, then someone here can help get you going.
And to add to that, I am thinking that it would have to be a firewire disk drive to boot (?? Anyone?)
I also have to agree with Jeff, If you have another mac with a working dvd drive, or know someone (use beer as payment ) with a mac that would be quick and easy. If you do it as jeff suggests, then both macs need to be the same, or if they are different, you can put the disk in the borrowed mac, shut it down and restart holding the T key, putting borrowed mac into target mode, then hook you mac and borrowed mac together with a firewire cable, start your mac holding the alt/option key which will bring you to the disk selection screen, pick the Leopard disk and it should start the installation.
Make sure when you get to the point in the installer where it asks you which disk you want to install to, make sure you select your mac (as the borrowed mac's hdd will show up also)
The above method basically turns the borrowed mac into an external firewire DVD drive. K

  • Problems installing Tiger onto G3 Imac - please help!

    hi all.
i've tried to install tiger onto a g3 imac but i'm having some problems.
basically, once i've inserted the install dvd and restarted, the screen is either totally blank or it's very very dark and the desktop is sliding off to one side, plus the text and icons are blurred.
i checked that i didn't need to update the firmware first, and the computer said that i didn't need to.
does anyone have any idea what i can do? i don't have the original OS9 install disk any more and i'm starting to panic ...
    thanks in advance
    ibook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Jon,
Not to be silly but do you you have DVD capabilities? Not all G3s (mine included) have DVD drives. Is the firmware 4.1.9? What is your machines specs? Do you have enough ram, hard disk space?
I haven't read about these types of going ons, however on the Tiger OS X.4 discussion board Gulliver has an excellent check list/ decision tree.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607363
You may want to check that out as well as reposting your topic on the Tiger board.
Sorry I couldn't help more than possibly pointing you in the right direction.
    Good luck,
    Lee
