Trying to Install S.L ... Grey Screen Freezes

I'm trying to update to Snow Leopard, and can't get through the install.
The install disk loads properly, I go through all the prompts, and installation begins properly. About 10 minutes in, the computer restarts, and loads up the grey page with apple icon. Here it freezes and sticks on this screen until I restart the computer.
There must be something simple I'm doing wrong or a simple fix, but I can't find it. Help! Anyone?

Where did you get the installer disk from? What Mac are you installing on running which OS?

  • Grey Screen Freeze after 10.6.7 update

I have 2 iMacs. My wife's is 2008 3.06 Ghz 24" model with Snow Leopard. Just updated to 10.6.7, and on re-boot we entered perpetual grey screen freeze ups. Followed guidance from support article - specifically to remove peripherals (attached were 2 USB devices - HP inkjet printer and WD 500G portable HD used as Time Machine. Also connected to LAN via RJ-45) After re-boot I changed network to airport to access LAN. When I re-inserted ethernet jack the grey screen immediately came up. Tried various combinations and ethernet connect always kills machine. Any ideas? I'm holding off on 10.6.7 update for other iMac.

Because I've had strange problems with past system update downloads, I now always get my system updates from http://support.apple.com/downloads/
I always use the Update Combo version. It installs a fresh set of all previous updates as well as the new one. This gives you a fresh beginning with system 10.6.x. Since I adopted that practice, I've had no more issues with updates.

  • Ive tried loading this new software, and step 1 and 2 were successful, but after trying to restart the loading grey screen wont stop loading?

ive tried loading this new software, and step 1 and 2 were successful, but after trying to restart the loading grey screen wont stop loading?

I had a similar problem, does the phone show anything on the screen, for example "update failed, connect to computer" if it does, try opening "Sony PC Companion 2.1" click start on "support zone" then click "phone/ tablet software update" a message will pop up, press repair my phone / tablet, select your phone in the list, then follow what it says, try doing this even if the phone shows nothing, you will lose everything, all data will be gone if you follow my steps

  • Grey screen freeze

Hi. At work, i've got an IMAC thats freezing at the grey screen and apple logo.....and I can only start the machine in about 1 in 5 attempts. I've tried a few things but eventually resorted to a clean install of Snow leopard, but the problem is still there.
    Any ideas?

Thanks.... I actually tried that and it didn't work. I even ran the hardware test as the FAQ suggested and it came up good. I just bought this PowerBook on refresh and was hoping nothing was wrong. Then I archived and reinstalled OS X and I haven't had a single KP since (knocks on wood). I don't really know what was wrong, but it seems to be fixed now. Thanks for the help.

  • New Mac froze overnight. Tried to power up just grey screen spinning.

New 21.5 iMac froze over night. Now just grey screen spinning wheel. No safe mode. Able to boot up in recovery disc once. Fixed permissions ? Restarted to no resolve. Tried again but mouse not working past mouse start up click freeze...  Have also looked and found a problem boot cache control : unable to open..
Any ideas any one this Mac is 3 weeks old

    I'd return it myself, but...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • Yet another Grey Screen Freeze Victim

Been scouring these posts for a couple of moths now trying to solve this problem...
My 2004, no apple care, no longer warranty'd, G5 freezes after the start-up tone on the grey apple screen, no pinwheel, the fans ramp up to full speed and I eventually have to give up and force shut down by holding the power button. It hasn't booted past that point in a couple of months. Never had any problems before this doozy, now my G5 is a loud paper weight.
I have gone inside and reset the SMU, didn't do anything.
I have unplugged everything, including power, and tried booting up adding one thing at a time, didn't do anything.
It won't let me boot in safe mode.
It won't let me reset my pram, i hold down command-opt-p-r, but the grey screen never comes and it doesn't restart itself.
Ran AHT and the results came back...
    logic board PASSED
    mass storage PASSED
    memory PASSED
    video ram PASSED
Rebooted after AHT, and freezes right back at the apple screen...
    I'm starting to go insane...

I would check it first. When mine went, I had no response from my Mac at all; just a light on my power button; absolutely no boot at all.
For G4's and earlier models, check out things in Texas Mac Man's Battery, PRAM, PMU tutorial on the subject.
G5 Tower users check Apple KB article HT2580 on DIY (Do It Yourself) Instructions. Click on the PDF for Battery.
Here is the late G5 SMU reset.
Early G5's use PMU rest, as shown in the tutorial. The battery for late G5 + G5 iMacs and earlier iMacs, Mac Minis and Intel Tower Macs is this one.

  • Just installed Q6600 ... screen freezes (mb msi975x P.P.Ed)

hello my brothers and sisters .
i am tired and i need help
first before i state the problem this my system major components:-
    processer :- new q6600 2.4
    RAM:- 2gb 800 mhz ( kingstone)
    vga:- 8800 GTX
MB:- msi 975x platinum powerup edition
the problem started when i decided to buy a new processor and and to replace my old processor pentium D which i was using for a complete year without any problems , same thing for the rest of the components , no problems at all .
i bought the Q6600 and installed it directly without touching any thing else in the system .
then i started the computer (my OS= vista 32) , and once i reached the welcome screen of vista , the whole system freezes , and you cannot do anything except restarting the system .
the second time the system freezed before vista completes loading .
then i restarted the system and entered to the safe mode , everthing is fine , i can operate as i want in that mode without any screen freezing .
i tried many thing like restoring the system from a restore point , removing the vga drivers ...etc but nothing worked at all .
even tried to format the system and install a fresh copy of vista , but i couldnt even complete the installation becuase the system freezes frequantly during the installation process .
dont know what happend to my system , everything was fine until i changed the cpu .
and i am seeking for help ladies and gentlemen , i am really tired from all this , spent 10 hr yesterday trying to figure a solution but none found .
i dont know if updating the MB bios will solve the problem , i dont know my mb current bios version but i didnt updated before + i bought the MB 1 year ago (not sure something around 1 year) and since that time i didnt update the BIOS
    please help me

    hello jack the Newbie
before i state anything i want to thank you about your efforts to help all the members and vistors in this forum

You forgot to mention the most important component of your system: power supply unit.
for the PSU its Enermax Galaxy 1000w , i dont know actually about the other details for the psu , specially that i am not an expert and not even a rookie , but i think the PSU is fine .
     Quote
can you provide more information about your RAM modules (model name, timings, recommended RAM voltage)?
for the RAM actually they are not the professional type like hyperx with low latency , they are the normal ones .
and i am embraced to tell you that i dont know about the other specifications like  timings, recommended RAM voltage
     Quote
Also, which BIOS Version are you using?
will actually i think its the standard version , but i am not sure , but i bought this MB from about 1 year ago , so i think maybe the my BIOS can not handle the q6600
     Quote
Have you cleared CMOS with main power cord removed from PSU after installing the new CPU?
will i think no , all what i did is that i removed the waterblock and installed the new cpu didnt do anything else at all
regarding vista i tried installing a fresh copy on  different harddisks (i have two) but i couldnt even complete the installation on any one because this freeze issue .
so the resultant is that i removed vista from the system , and i am stuck trying to install a new fresh copy , but the system freezes at different points in the installation making it impossible to install an OS for the system .
and sorry for my horrible English !

  • MBP won't boot after failed 10.4.9 install (stalls at grey screen)

MBP intel CD2 2.33 2GB RAM previous 10.4.8. attempted install of 10.4.9 Received an error stating 10.4.9 could not be installed. Restarted and now the grey screen with the small apple symbol and spinning wheel at startup just keeps going. It never reached the blue screen. I let it sit for at least an hour and still the same. Reboot and it does the same... stalls at the grey screen with apple symbol.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I looked through the support files and threads but could not find anything about this.
I don't have a backup (ouch) but will be doing that immediatley if I can get this fixed.
BTW.. I did attempt to boot from the install disk and it does show the boot folder on the HD as 10.4.9 although it said the install failed.
    Thanks again
    Chris

Thanks guys. I need to get a firewire>firewire cable. I'll boot into target mode and backup my home folder.
What about re-installing the OS with the option of preserving the previous settings and user account. Would I be able to access my old applications or just the files? I was considering reformatting anyway because of all the "crap" I've loaded on over the year.
Rregardless I will try target mode first and let you know.
    Thanks!

  • Macbook pro will not shut down, how do I get past the grey screen freeze without a hard shutdown?

Recently upgraded from 17" Macbook Pro to 15" late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina. I have an intemittant problem, (that I also experienced with my 17" Macbook) where when I log out or try to shut down I get a grey screen, no cursor, no spinning beachball... no way to escape a blank grey screen. Seems to be happening more often.

    Reset SMC.

  • Event 123 - The DSM service was delayed by nn seconds for a driver query/download/install on device then screen freezes

The reader's digest version of the saga is I received a Dell Vostro 460 with a wiped disk. The PC emitted beep code indicating PSU or RAM issue when turned on.  After resolving the marginal power supply with a new replacement, I installed Windows 7
but as soon as I would launch IE the system would freeze.  All of the BIOS & device drivers are current.  I tried upgrading to Windows 8 but kept getting the black screen right after the install process finished installing the devices. I had
to resort to a clean install.  Having successfully install Windows 8.1 I have been able to a get to the desktop, however every time I launched IE my system freezes in the same way as with Windows 7.  I installed a different browser and used that
to research the event log errors.  As the system freezes, I see warning log entries with event id 123 entries:
Event 123 - The DSM service was delayed by 125 seconds for a driver query/download/install on device  'ACPI\GENUINEINTEL_-_INTEL64_FAMILY_6_MODEL_42_-_________INTEL(R)_CORE(TM)_I7-2600_CPU_@_3.40GHZ\_8'

Event 123 - The DSM service was delayed by 106 seconds for a driver query/download/install on device 'PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0100&SUBSYS_04AB1028&REV_09\3&11583659&0&00'

There are more but these warnings are stacked in groups of two or three then the error & critical entries indicating I did a hard reboot.
When I use Firefox browser to open several tabs everything is fine until I stream audio/video then the same freeze screen happens and i have to reboot. Anything you can offer will be very much appreciated.

    Hi,
'PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0423 is a graphic card driver from the vendor’s official webpage.
Besides as you mentioned in the post, it happened when you launch Internet Explorer, there is an accelerated  Graphics item in the Internet Explorer, the settings should be changed, please follow this way:
Go to the control panel, then select the Internet Option, go to advance, just like the screenshot below:
select the checkbox if it is empty, anyhow make it different from the previous settings, then restart your computer to see the result.

  • When trying to install I get a screen asking for "settings wants to change computer" or some sun wording, have tried my Apple administrative password and my Adobe password - neither seems to work - what not?

Tryng to install Adobe photoshop elements 13 on my iMac, I am asked for a password to allow "settings" change my compute.  have tried both my admin Mac password and my adobe password, no luck - any help?

  • Install fail - dark grey screen

I just downloaded Mavericks and did a restart when prompted. After the restart the Apple logo appeared and then the spinning wheel. After about 15 more seconds the Mac goes pretty much quiet and the screen becomes dark grey.
After a forced restart it's the same and also if I try to start with the recovery disc.
I have a dead computer in front of me and any help is appreciated.

Ok, hopefully I have solved this myself.
My computer is connected to my TV as second screen. The TV was turned off, but probably suddenly was assigned as my primary screen. As I restarted I looked at my darkened computer monitor while the update was going on on the TV that was turned off.
I disconnected my tv and I now have the update window running. Hopefully I didn't screw anything up by several force restarts.

  • Trying to Install Firefox, the Run Screen doesn't come up. Nothing happens. What now?

I'm taken directly to the "Thanks for Downloading Firefox screen" Nothing else happens.
I don't have it currently on my computer.
    I've disabled pop up blockers.
    ????

Assuming you're trying to download for Windows, go to this link: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
and click the download button. On the next screen, you should get a pop-up asking you to save a file. Do you get this?? If not, try refreshing the page. If the problem persists, let us know.

  • TS2570 I tried a safe reboot and my computer still shows a grey screen and the spinning gear when turned on. The last message on the reboot said "Launch_msg(): socket is not connected" have no idea what that means.

I tried a safe reboot my computer had a grey screen and a spinning gear. Safe boot did not fix the problem.
The last writing on the safe boot said " Launch_msg(): Socket is not connected.
Tried re starting and same grey screen and spinning gear

Can you boot to the Snow Leopard DVD?

  • Grey screen problems - the spinning beachball strikes again

Long story short, I have Macbook Pro mid 2012, Mountain Lion and it keeps crashing. I restore via Time Machine but invariably it'll freeze when I'm booted up and when I have to force-quit I get the spinning cogwheel when I restart. I've tried all the 'stuck on grey screen' suggestions but nothing's working. Also my Time Machine (an external hard drive) seems to be having problems as well - it sticks on 94mb backed up out of a few gb. All help gratefully received

If you have the free space on your Time Machine drive and it's formatted as GUID, then I would clone my internal drive. You can boot from the clone, erase the internal drive and install Mavericks as a clean install. It's easy to copy your data only from the clone to the new install. We can discuss getting the applications you need but doing it carefully to be sure they run under Mavericks.
Both of these applications can be used to create a clone.
