Trying to learn how to copy audio tapes

I have posted this same question on the Audacity forum but have had no responses yet so I thought I might try here also. I am a brand new novice with my computer described below and had hoped to use it for amongst many other things, copying some old vintage cassette music tapes into my iTunes in mp3 format and then onto my iPod so that I could listen to the music on my old stereo system with the iPod plugged in. The music on these tapes is from the 1950's to the 1970's which I firstly put onto reel to reel tape in the 70s as LPs became obsolete and secondly onto the new modern revelation of the time, casette tape. I think that this conversion to mp3 if I ever figure it out will be the last in my lifetime. I guess I am dating myself and yes I have no problem in admitting that I am a senior citizen who needs to be carefully led by the hand to figure out how to do this project which will entail much work since the tapes (mainly Slavic music from Russia, Ukraine, Romania, etc. which originated in the old Soviet Union) number many, are obviously no longer available and there are probably about 30 - 50 hours to be copied. I think I have figured out the first step: Connect my tape deck player to my iMac using a cable with RCA plugs on one end plugged into the output of my tape deck and a mini jack plug on the other end which plugs into the back of the iMac in the Audio in/optical digital audio in port. I then read that I needed a program like Audacity. Well, I downloaded it (version 1.2.5 which was recommended since it was supposedly more "stable" than the newer beta version) and have absolutely no idea what to do with it - there appears to be no help menu of any use to me so all I am staring at is a window of a control panel with buttons for play, stop, etc. and a bunch of numbers underneath the buttons. I need very simple, clear, step by step instructions (sorry but it's a symptom of old age). I also have something called GarageBand on this computer which seems to have something to do with music and I wondered if it might be useful but of course have no knowledge regarding it's use. If anyone has the patience and time to provide me with very detailed, simple instructions (please don't presuppose I have any knowledge in this field) I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance.

We didn't do that video. Why are you asking here?

  • HT4783 I'm trying to learn how to use Airdrop between my wife's Mac and mine. We both have it, but this article did not help us learn HOW to share files.  Yippeee that we can...but HOW?

My wife and I are trying to learn how to use Air Drop.  The "tutorial" showed us where it is.  It came up.  I saw hers (Mac).  She saw mine (Mac). But where to go after that is, apparently, in the cloud somewhere.  The description says we can share files...which is nice...but nothing tells us HOW to share those files.
Thanks for your help out there...
    Dennis

    1. Open a new Finder window or use one that's already open
    2. Click on Airdrop, press Shift+Command+R, or find "Airdrop" in the "Go" menu
    3. Drag your file to the icon of the person you want to send the file to (if you have mountain lion, you can use the share button).
    4. The other person has to click "save"
    5. The file will send and appear in the receiver's downloads folder
In Mountain Lion, a new feature was added: the share button. It's a button with a picture of a box and an arrow jumping out of it. Click on it and the third (and last) option is "Airdrop" and clicking on it will allow you to send files over Airdrop without opening it in Finder.

  • How do I copy audio tapes to my iMac?

I have some audio cassettes we made of the kids when they were little. I want to make them into CDs before the tapes break. (One already has and has been repaired.) Do I need a special application to do this? Can I do it on GarageBand? Please give me simple, step-by-step instructions. Thanks.

  • How to convert audio tapes to MP3s?

I have some audio cassette tapes I want to convert to mp3s.
I have a tape recorder with line in, line out and a mic and headphones socket.
I have a jack adapter, which you can see in the photo below.
My imac 10.8.4 has a headphones port.
    I've got garageband and audacity.
In System Preferences, in Sound, I've got the Input tab on Internal Microphone; and the Output tab is on Internal Speakers.
I've tried all possible combinations with the jack adapter; but I can't get anything from the tape deck on to the mac.
    What am I doing wrong?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

You don't have a line in. Headphones are a line out. You can get various USB things that will take a line in. For instance

  • How to copy audio section

Some of my old analogue tapes have lost part of the audio tracks. How can I duplicate parts of the good audio section and fill the gaps where audio has disappeared in order to maintain the same background sound? Thanks for any help.

Thanks a lot for your advise. I will try in Soundtrack and see how it works.
Just for your info, I have meanwhile managed to complete the job by exporting a section of the same audio background sound and subsequently import the file into my project. But I am certain that using Soundtrack would be a better solution which will provide more alternatives to play with the sound options. Anyway, thanks again for your kind efforts.

  • Videocast - how to copy audio to iPod?

I have quite a few vidcasts, vodcast, videocast (whatever you call them) in iTunes, but I have an iPod mini I want to copy the audio track to. It won't let me since it's a video.
How can I separate the audio from the video in order to copy to my iPod?

You could probably import the video into iMovie.
After you put your video podcast into the timeline, go to the File menu and select "Share...". Select Quicktime and "Compress movie for: Expert Settings"
When it brings up the Save dialog box, select Export: Sound to AIFF
This will save it as an AIFF sound file which you can import into iTunes and convert to MP3 or AAC.
Quite a lot to go through. You also can do a similar process if you have Quicktime Pro.

  • How to Copy Audio Track onto 2nd Channel in iMovie '08

    Hello,
Boy, I made a big mistake while recording video of my in-laws 50th wedding anniversary. I accidentally recorded onto audio track #1 ONLY. Track #2 is empty. Consequently, I have audio in one speaker. Oops! It's an hour's worth of great 1080i HD footage, too.
I've done my edits, but is there a way to copy and paste the audio from one track to the other track? I know in Final Cut it can be done, but I don't have a copy. I'm only able to use iMovie '08 at this point. If the solution is in the iMovie help section, please let me know what the search word(s) is so I can go to it. I looked but couldn't find anything.
    Huge thanks,
    Jack

    audio processing in iM08 is .. +very basic+ ..
the intended workflow is, to Share the project via MediaBrowser to Garageband .. which offers with its many tracks and pan controler to create a 'double channel mono'

  • Photoshop says "Rendering Type" and loads for a very long time, how do I fix this? I'm new to Photoshop and I was trying to learn how to make a watermark. This happens once I press the "Text" tool. I'm using a Mac with OS X. Please help, thank you.

Photoshop says "Rendering Type" under a "Progress" Bar that shows up. I'm trying to create a watermark and this happens when I press the "Text" tool. Please help, I'm new to Photoshop. Thank you.

So you created a document 192000 pixels wide, and 108000 tall, and  set the type to be 2 inches tall.  Yes, the type is going to take a few minutes to render in that document.
Yes, you created a document much bigger than you probably intended (you probably wanted 1920 PIXELS by 1080 PIXELS).
Pixels and inches are not the same, and you need to pay attention to the units.

  • Still Trying to Learn How the Thing Works

I wrote the message below a couple of months ago, but have not had a reply. I decided to call Toshiba for help. I was told the drive only writes over files that have changed from previous saves and, therefore, has plenty of space for my meager files accumulated.
I do two versions of saves: Files and Complete System Backup. The Files process works fine; but now I receive a message saying my drive is full when I try to do a Complete System Backup. I looked at the saved files through Windows Explorer and see many copies of Complete System Backup which are obviously filling my drive. I expected only a few. Can someone help me fix this problem?
PREVIOUS MESSAGE: I have a Canvio 500GB portable backup that works just fine. However, there are no instructions on how it works and how to optimize performance. For example, how many copies of backups are made? Or does the system simply over-write previous copies? When I do a backup, I now get an indication that my drive is 80% full. How can I eliminate what I don't need so I don't fill the entire thing up? Toshiba is silent on the matter.

Not surprising you didn't get any response!
We can't see you and your backup. So we haven't the faintest idea what you're doing.
I know from reading messages here that some of Toshiba's external drives come with some version of NTI Backup Now EZ. Maybe you're using that. Or maybe you're using Windows' own backup. Or maybe you're using some third-party program. There are lots of backup programs out there.
Just in case you're using that NTI program, I did a little googling for you and found a User's Guide (attached). With a little luck, it helps.

  • Trying to learn how to setup Linux Domain with Linux client

Okay I know I might get some problems for this, but I am trying to setup a ubuntu based server (domain), with an arch based client.  I am having a hard time getting the two to cooperate and working with centralized passwords and roaming profiles.  I am a real newbie when it comes to linux, much less samba server.  This is where I chose to start off since I do have an interest in networking,

    Welcome to the forums.
We can't help you with the Ubuntu side of things obviously, but I think you might get some usefull info from the Samba Wiki article.

  • Exactly how to copy/paste audio?

I see in the manuals and lessons that you can copy audio from a video clip and use it elsewhere.
What I'm stuck on is EXACTLY how you copy audio (without the video it is with). I have "extracted" the audio in the clip from which I want to take the audio and identified which bit of it I want.
I see from the manual how to copy video, by placing cursor just under the play head and dragging. But this brings with it the video, so when I paste I get the audio I want together with the unwanted video which barges out of the way the clip into whcih I want to drop the audio only.
I am sure I'm missing something simple, but I can ony find guidance on copy video, not audio, althought he lessons lightly say you can do it, they don't say how.
    Anyone can help?
    TIA

    Answered my own question.
You select by positioning the "audio playhead" in the audio clip in question, dragging it and pressing Coomand-C to copy the audio clip. (I'm guessing this is obvious to Mac users but it's not clear to this pc refugee how to "select" - in fact it's taken days to get to the bottom of this.
Then position the playhead where you want the audio clip and Edit-Paste, then trim teh excess to get the bits you don't want.
Actually less intuitive and user friendly than I would have expected, but well, there is it.

  • Trying to learn to code div tag so that i can make 3 columns

    Hello,
I am trying to learn how to work with the code for div's in Dreamweaver.
I have a id for the main container named wrapper that is 900px wide and I have 3 div's inside of it that are just long blocks of type . Each div (#history, #attitudes, #per) is 300px wide with the height falling to accommodate the type. I want then next to each other, and right now they are just one long column with the 3 sections..each have a different background color. Here is the code so far...I am trying to play with the float and positioning but nothing I do works.  In the End, it should just be 3 columns of type next to each other. Each column has one header tag for the topic name and the rest is just using the p body tag. can someone help me get the columns next to one another using the code?
    thanks!

  • Trying to learn Spry Framework Ajax

    So I am trying to learn how to use Spry Framwork for Ajax;
    which I downloaded from
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/
Does anyone know if this some how plugs into Dreamweaver 8 or
if I wish to use it, "the Photo Gallery to be specific", that I
have to manually manipulate the code to use my photos and then
implement their html into my template?

With DW8, you will have to use the Spry Framework manually.
    It's built into
    the new Dreamweaver CS3.
