Trying to learn Roto Brush and am stumped.

Ok, I have watched videos, read the help but cannot seem to get to stage one of learning Roto Brush. I started a project, imported one video in one comp and that is all there is in the project. highlite the comp window, click on the roto brush and go over to the video to work. All the video's show the cursor changing to let you know the roto brush is activated and ready to go but mine is just the cursor and if I click to draw it thinks I want the video and just grabs it and moves it around. What on earth am I doing wrong here? After Effects CC, all up to date.

Ok, just found a new cloud update and rebooted....suddenly its working.

  • How can we improve the Roto Brush tool and Refine Matte effect?

If you use the Roto Brush tool and/or Refine Matte effect, let us know how you're using it and what you'd like to see improved.
(We'd especially appreciate it if you gave feedback after you've had a chance to learn how to use the features and try them out on some real work.)
Normally, we like to encourage feedback through the feature-request form, but in this case we'd like to get a more public conversation going.

    Hello,
I've been using the Roto Brush and so far I am very impressed.  It is much more stable than I anticipated and gets me pretty far with much less work.  I'd say I can get my shots 85-90% of the way done with the Roto Brush tools, in a fraction of the time.  Bravo to Adobe for such a great tool.  I have however, hit one major snag.  I am part of a pipeline and I need to render out my mattes and pass them up the chain.  When I look at my Roto Brush precomp it is beautiful, the motion blur is perfect and the alpha looks identical when I check that out.  However when I render out my tiff sequence and pull it back in to check it, there is bleed in the motion blur.  I'm not sure this is a roto brush problem because when I look at the alpha of the roto brush layer and the rendered matte they appear identical.  Any suggestions on how to get the bleed out of the blur?
    Thanks,
    Danielle

  • How can I optimize my setup for Roto Brush?

I've been trying to work with Roto Brush and on a 8-second clip and it's painfully slow (about 4-5 seconds to propagate between individual frames).  Adding and subtracting to the mattes take a fair amount of time to refresh too; all said and done I might as well have just painted mattes by hand.
Is this normal?  The demos make it looks so quick and simple...
I'm on a fairly decent machine (Windows 8.1 64-bit, 8-core Xeon, 64GB RAM).  Looking at the task manager it seems it's only using one CPU core while working, but it's not even maxing out that core.
    Thanks for any insight/tips!

That's just how it works. Traditionally, AE can only use 1 thread/core for most temporal operations since they need to be handled linearly and in sequence. Equally traditionally Xeons have a smaller per-core efficiency since they are aimed at parallel processing more than peak performance with TurboBoost as a core(X)i would. Simply not an ideal combination.

  • How do I reverse playback for automatic roto-brush propagation?

    Hey all,
So I am just using the roto-brush in one of my projects. I've done propagation in the forward direction from the base frame, and I mainly did automatic propagation by pressing play and then stopping the playback when a mistake is made. However I want to do automatic propagation in the backwards direction, so is there some form of reverse playback I can use in order to go in reverse? Or will I have to go frame by frame backwards?
    Photo:
As you can see in the image the entire right side has been done but unsure how to do it in reverse from the base from.
    Thanks!
    (After Effects CC 13.2.0.49)

Nope, the best option you have is to split the layer at the 40s and start from the beginning.
See these links from the Search field at the top right corner of After Effects searching "rotobrush":
    Search Rotobrush
Use the Roto Brush | Adobe After Effects CC tutorials
Roto Brush and Refine Matte | CS6
Unfortunately most folks that start using Rotobrush don't understand how to use the tool. It's not very intuitive.

  • Trialling After Effects... Brushes and Roto brush facility simply won't t work

Teaching English as a foreign language and using film skills.
I need to start doing the 'magic wand' equivalent of using moving images overlaid for science and history... you know the drill, planets in the sky etc, standing in a battle scene.
Now I've done this on MAC OK but downloaded to Win7 64 bit and the roto brushes just won't draw edit lines on the content... I've tried all manner of formats AVI, MOC MP4 etc but nothing.
What's so different about Windows I need to know?

    Hi,
Well I don't have mote than that. I downloaded yesterday so its the latest version and I need to delete backgrounds to build composite presentations for children doing on-line presentations.
Some of the 'TOOLS' work but not the roto brushes.
I've no doubt its user error here but I can't think what. When everything else is seemingly working fine, the one feature I need, just isn't. Something isn't switched on.
I've wondered if its the version of Quicktime I'm using. AE states clearly it needs that for some of the functions, so I updated after the AE installation.. Could it be as simple as that?

  • I'm trying to learn and I think the knowledge is here!

Hi! i'm always trying to learn and pass forward.  I'm not here to cause trouble. I have some things that I would like to have confirmed or denied. I do not own a HP computer at this time, but several of the residents in my village do. I have observed some great advice to community members from some smart people here on the forum. I have some things that I have learned from other forums and I want to share them. I would like to have comments from all the smart members here on the community forum. OK here we go!!
Let's say we have a PC that won't boot into windows for some reason. Now IMHO, we have software or hardware problems.
This is what I do. I down load a linux program. It's called Pupply Love.http://puppylinux.org/main/Overview%20and%20Getting%20Started.htm
This is a ISO file that you burn to a CD. It is a live CD and you can boot with it. You do not need a HD.
Even if your PC has no hard disk (ex, broken hard disk), you can still boot Puppy via CD or USB and continue working. Old PCs that no longer work with new systems will still work good-as-new with Puppy.
Now IMHO, you have proved that your monitor, power supply, and CPU are working. So now the HD is left. There are many ways to test your HD. One that comes to my mind is seatools dos.http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-dos-master/
One way to test your memory is memtest86.http://www.memtest86.com/download.htm
memtest and seatools dos are both live CD's and should boot even if you don't have a working OS.
Another live CD is the system repair CD  and the system recovery discs that you should have created on day one.
I realize that HP has some great tools and I'm hoping that a guru will reply to this thread and add their comments. This is the way I learn. Computers can be a pain in the neck, but us humans can hold our own if we are willing to learn and pass forward to others.
    Dokie!!
PS I take criticisms pretty well! This thread can be deleted if it is out of line or does not meet the standards of the forum. Some times I get a little windy and carried away.

Hi Leo! If you can stop these down load managers, you will be my hero.
    Dokie!!
PS I have tried my best to warn members here on the forum, but I haven't got a lot of support so far.
I have my figers crossed that the new team will get-er-done

Did anyone see the post I made about LR 4?Just in case I will post again. I have LR4 I bought last August and just now I am trying to learn this >I have "Classroom in  a Book" for LR4 lots of problems . I have a IMAC version 10.9.3. I tried different Adobe sites. They will not give me the Time of day because they say they no longer support this program. Can anyone here tell me where I can get support for this LR$ that Adobe no longer recognizes. Thank you My name is Jerry S. MY e-mail is [email protected] and phone number is 563-344-7910.

Okay I will try. First I have lost pictures in catalogs and could not find again.I have tried reinstalling LR4 and when I do and reopen LR4 the same catalog appears in the panel and filmstrip and I have no idea how to get rid of that catalog and start over at square one like it was the frist time it was opened. That would be a big help and I think I start over and avoid the same problems.

  • Hi, I've just started as a fresher in sap fico and I'm upto the LSMW part and I'm wondering why I keep getting an error in Run batch step when I do everything else correct could you help?  Please help I'm really trying to learn it as fast as possible

Please help I'm really trying to learn it as fast as possible?  I've posted the file with all my screen shots going through the enitre process of me creating the LSMW file.

First, I will try to address the iPod issue: If youve tried EVERYTHING on the website, your only other option is probably to contact Apple, I recommend by phone, and informing them of the problem. You are covered by warranty and therefore they are liable to assist you. Try that and come back with a status update
Now I will address your attitude about it:Its absolutely understandable to be upset over something like this, especially with such an expensive product, but you are generalizing far to much. You may think Apple is being unproffesional by not warning potential buyers of the iPods common faults, but do you really think they would? they are out to sell these things, they arent going to point out the bad in their product. And not all iPods have problems, in fact only a fraction do. That gopes for the rest o Apples products as well. You are too hasty assuming all Apple products are junk, and one of many reasons as to why that is unfair of you is becuase you dont own any other Apple products.

  • Paint and Roto Brush Not Working?

Had a few problems since re-installing Windows and AE CS5. Mask tool works, can create masks in layer, but everytime I select Roto Brush or Paint Brush and click into a layer to do something, no luck. Absolutely nothign happens, settings for the brushes are fine, just not being applied to any layer, plain solid or a picture. I am not new to AE, been using it for a long time, but rarely use AE for these features. Any ideas on how I can actually start to paint in AE?

Thanks mate, I realised with the change of workspace, I'm used to the Text workspace as a pose to the one which it was set on I was working in the wrong preview. Also it was auto locking my layer for some reasons, but now that's resolved too. Thanks, you definately helped.

  • HT4783 I'm trying to learn how to use Airdrop between my wife's Mac and mine. We both have it, but this article did not help us learn HOW to share files.  Yippeee that we can...but HOW?

My wife and I are trying to learn how to use Air Drop.  The "tutorial" showed us where it is.  It came up.  I saw hers (Mac).  She saw mine (Mac). But where to go after that is, apparently, in the cloud somewhere.  The description says we can share files...which is nice...but nothing tells us HOW to share those files.
Thanks for your help out there...
    Dennis

    1. Open a new Finder window or use one that's already open
    2. Click on Airdrop, press Shift+Command+R, or find "Airdrop" in the "Go" menu
    3. Drag your file to the icon of the person you want to send the file to (if you have mountain lion, you can use the share button).
    4. The other person has to click "save"
    5. The file will send and appear in the receiver's downloads folder
In Mountain Lion, a new feature was added: the share button. It's a button with a picture of a box and an arrow jumping out of it. Click on it and the third (and last) option is "Airdrop" and clicking on it will allow you to send files over Airdrop without opening it in Finder.

    Hi...
    Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts
    Control-F4
Move focus to the active (or next) window
    Shift-Control-F4
Move focus to the previously active window
By the way...  since you are new to Mac, click a clear space on your Desktop. You should see "Finder" top left corner of the screen in the menu bar.
Click Help then click Help Center
As an example type in    keyboard shortcuts
You can use the Help menu for almost any application on your Mac.

  • Photoshop says "Rendering Type" and loads for a very long time, how do I fix this? I'm new to Photoshop and I was trying to learn how to make a watermark. This happens once I press the "Text" tool. I'm using a Mac with OS X. Please help, thank you.

Photoshop says "Rendering Type" under a "Progress" Bar that shows up. I'm trying to create a watermark and this happens when I press the "Text" tool. Please help, I'm new to Photoshop. Thank you.

So you created a document 192000 pixels wide, and 108000 tall, and  set the type to be 2 inches tall.  Yes, the type is going to take a few minutes to render in that document.
Yes, you created a document much bigger than you probably intended (you probably wanted 1920 PIXELS by 1080 PIXELS).
Pixels and inches are not the same, and you need to pay attention to the units.

  • Roto Brush issue in CS5 Premiere Pro

I am a new CS5 user with a week of learning under my belt.  (My previous experience was splicing 8mm film together when making films as a kid.)  I am hoping someone can advise on an issue I am encountering in CS5 Premiere Pro?  (I realize Roto Brush is a tool in After Effects, but I am having trouble with the output of the Roto Brush tool in Premiere Pro.)
I opened a .VOB file (taken from a DVD) in Premiere Pro (first I changed the extension to .MPG).  It opened as 720 x 480 at 23.976 fps.  No problems scrubbing through and using the Razor tool.  I selected one of the small razored subsections I made from the video, and opened it in After Effects using the Premiere Pro menu selection: File>Adobe Dynamic Link>Replace With After Effects Composition.  No problem opening in After Effects.  I learned the Roto Brush tool and it also worked great as I successfully masked out a moving figure - looks great.  But ...
When I return to Premiere Pro, the After Effect composition does not display the same as it did in After Effects.  Specifically there appears to be some kind of mask/motion mismatch, and so a bluish border will appear on some frames around the figure as it moves.  In After Effects the rotoscope is perfect, but in Premiere it is like a poorly done rotoscope with the borders of the figure messed up.  I am hoping the comparison images below will make this clear.  The image on the left shows the perfectly rotoscoped figure in After Effects, and on the right the same frame but in Premiere Pro.  Note how the image in Premiere Pro has a messed up border around the figure?
Has anyone experienced this or know why it is occuring?  I can think of some possible work-arounds that could be tried, but the dynamic link method is nice and fast.  So before I start rendering and saving and reopening files in a work-around attempt, I am wondering first what could be causing this issue.  Thanks for any ideas.

    Hi,
Just to let you know that you've posted in the Audition (audio) forum and may do better posting over in the Premier Pro forums.
However, as one who works in both video and audio, I'd just comment that your choice of export format is affected big time by what you want to do with your edit.  Things like Youtube, DVD, Bluray, etc. all have their own formats that you have to adhere to.  Within those formats you often have choices you can make to balance bandwidth vs. quality but these only come into play once you've decided where your project has to end up.

  • Roto Brush Performance Issues & Seeking Advice.

    Hello everyone,
First time posting in the forum, so I'll make this as painless as I can and hopefully I can get a hand in figuring this out.
Computer is a brand new Mac Book Pro 15in Retina Display.
    - 2.7ghz Intel Core i7 (quad core)
    - 16gb Ram
    - SSD HD
    - NVidia GeForce GT 650m 1024 mb.
    - OSX 10.8.3
    - After Effects 11.0.2.11
The project that I'm working on right now was shot 1080, 24fps. I cut the project in Premier and copied all of the footage to AE for keying and to ad motion graphics. The project is close to 5 minutes in length, when I noticed the project effecting the performance of my computer I created 4 smaller projects.
I'm using the rotobrush to add back in the underside of the brim, a task which, initially, I didn't expect to be such a problem.
No issues at all with keying, so I duplicated the footage, and began roto brushing the brim at full resolution. For the most part, I've been advancing by 10 frames, which I understand will take longer to propagate, however any selection after the render is completely is leaving After Effects almost completely unresponsive for a minute or two.
Not sure what exactly is going on. I just finished a project last week and used the roto brush quite a bit and had absolutely no problems!
I read every article and post I found on the roto brush tool, as well as a handful of AE Optimization articles and videos.
Not sure what else you might need to know from me, but any input or advice would be great.
Also, if there is a better way to handle adding the underside of the brim back in please let me know. I've tried a few different options, and roto brushing seemed to be the best and quickest option until this!
    Thanks a lot!
    -Joe

It's hard to say what is causing the rotobrush show down but there may be an easy work around. Try something like this:
I applied keylight to the footage, selected combined matte to give rotobrush a nice easy area to work in, then pre-composed the keyed footage and used RotoBrush on the layer to select the underside of the hat. I added a white solid behind the rotoed pre-comp and pre composed that to use as a track matte for the original footage. Keylight was also applied to the original footage but was only used to supress color. Here's the AEP. Maybe it will give you some ideas.
