Trying to limit a user on OSX Server to one directory for FTP

Hey there everybody,
I'm trying to set up a client FTP for a new mac mini running OSX Server (Mavericks). FTP is enabled and I am able to get and put files but, the server is going to be used for a client services company and we will need to use it to transfer files back and forth without allowing access to the whole machine. The core issue is when I FTP in as a user I can still move around and see folders and files. I would like to create a user that can only see one folder or directory and only get / put files to that one place. Can't seem to find any similar posts, though I would assume this is fairly common.
Huge thanks in advance!

Not really.  You should not be sharing an Aperture library over a network.  It's not designed for that and you'll likely corrupt your library at some point.

  • How can local user send message to other user via OSX server in mac maverick

I just install OS X server in mac mavericks and enable services such as message, DNS, VPN, etc. I also create local users and local network users. I add some local users from OSX server to Message app in order to message to server, but I cannot send any message to those user, even Bonjour is available but I cannot use it to send message in local network.
I already followed all Server Help in Messages like in this image:
I try to access to my local OS X server via IP address by using other PC, Mac and iPhone and I can get this interface:
I already try in iPhone to send message to local user in OS X server after accessing to OS X server via IP Address, but I don't know how local user can get that message and I see nothing in message_archives of message data of server. Therefore, how each user in OSX server can message to each other across OSX server ? Does Admin have to write some codes or make configuration for providing message services to those users ?

Client users need to use XMPP client app to log in to server with account name like in server , then user can send message to other users in server. Client users can use iphone, pc, or mac.

Rather than importing in Server.app you could try using Workgroup Manager.

  • Accidentally deleted "Directory Administrator" user in OSX Server (10.9.1)

I was under Users in the OS X Server and deleted the "Directory Administrator" account that was put there after configuring "Device Management" under Profile Manager. I made a new administor account that is a local account as well but was it the same as the (DA) account? How do I to make changes to the username and password on the "Directory Administator" account? Thanks for the help.

perhaps a bit extreme, but you can force the server to restart from a blank slate, by deleting the .ServerSetupDone file.
    sudo rm /var/db/.ServerSetupDone

  • OSX Server DHCP Service - Support for tftp-server or bootp-server entries

We have a bunch of IP phones that get their initial setup from DHCP. On a Linux box, we can add the entries:
    option tftp-server-name
    or
    option boot-server
We do this to tell the phones where to download their settings/firmware from. Does OSX DHCP support this? If so, what entries do I have to put in NetInfo/config/dhcp to make this work??
    Thanks!

Personally I never got that dirty and fiddled aroung os x's bootpd but as you can read in its man page:
Regardless of whether bootpd knows the type of the option or not, you can always specify the DHCP option using the data
    property list type e.g.:
    <string>dhcpoption128</string>
    <data>
    AAqV1Tzo
    </data>
    that could be possible.

  • Trying to zip up a bunch of files into one file for an easy transfer

So I'm helping this lady transfer her old files from her 9.2 OS onto OS X, how do I zip files? With windows I would use Win Zip. Is there Mac zip?

Hello Trank31337 & Welcome to Discussions,
If your not familiar with zip files on a Macintosh here is a quick run down. Stuffit Expander, which is part of the OS 9 and OS X systems is used to open zip files and many other formats only. If you want to actually zip a file, you will need to purchase Stuffit Deluxe from Aladdin Systems.
    http://www.stuffit.com
    Or
You could look into the free program MacZip. It says it works with 7.x and I'm not sure if it will work with OS 9 or OS X. Give it a look at:

  • Can I use OSX Server instead of Dropbox?

We are considering buying OSX Server.  One basis for the purchase would be to replace Dropbox.  We currently use Dropbox with local sync of folders, so all oru people work directly in folders that are synced to everyone else.  Thus all docs are available locally all the time adn then they are available on everyones iPads, iPhones and Android phones.  However a downside of that is that it takes space on the local hard drive, we can have conflicts where multiple people open a file.
Can someone please explain how remote users get access to the OSX server and the documents on it and if there is a "syncing" option similar to Dropbox?
    Thanks
    John

    Answers:
#1 Yes, if set up correctly the server can be available to everyone with Internet access.
Typically this would be via a VPN connection.  One caveat–only one VPN connection can be active from a particular LAN.  In other words, if two computers on the same LAN want to connect via VPN to your server, this will not work (at least it wouldn't under earlier versions of OS X).
WebDAV is a possibility but I have not had good results when using WebDAV.  Access is limited to apps that support WebDAV connections (such as Pages, Numbers, and Keynote).  Even then it seemed a bit problematic.
#2 Any offline documents from the server must be managed manually.  In other, you must manually copy them back and forth.  As Linc mentioned above, OS X Server does not offer sync functionality.

  • Is OSX server right for me?

i work for a small dvd authoring house and I am trying to improve the efficiency of our workflow.
We are mostly PC based, with a few powermac G5s. I have set up one of the powermacs as a central storage server. It is connected to a 2 terrabyte raid array via fiberchanel.
Everyone retrieves and places files on to the array by connecting through gigabit ethernet to the powermac which is sharing the volume using a shareware program called sharepoints.
I have recently setup one of our employees that works remotely with an FTP account using tigers built ftp server so that she can also connect to the central array.
    My questions:
Will upgrading the powermac to osx server yield any benifits for our workflow?
Is it possible to put two seperate gigabit ethernet cards in everyone's computer for faster network transfers to and from the central storage?
Our remote employee has noted that downloads and uploads to our server via FTP are far slower than transfers she makes to other ftps. Currently 20k a sec is her top speed with an avg of 10. She was getting close to 100k/s with the FTP server we rent from Readyhosting. Will upgrading to osx server improve the speed of remote transfers, what about rumpus?
We transfer a lot of media files throught out the day, it adds a lot of overhead. We cant afford to go all out with xsan and fiberchannel switches. Does anyone have any suggestions that may improve the workflow.
What would be ideal is if our digitizers could capture a movie directly to the central storage array and our dvd authors can read the files directly from the array. My gut feeling is a gigabit network doesnt have the bandwidth for this.
    thanks for any insight.

Will upgrading the powermac to osx server yield any benifits for our workflow?
I doubt it. As long as the limited number of connections and lack of GUIs for the configuration aren't a problem, there isn't really much difference between client and server.
Is it possible to put two seperate gigabit ethernet cards in everyone's computer for faster network transfers to and from the central storage?
Not really. Trunking or bonding is connection based. In other words, one file goes over one wire, next file next wire. So if you're going to be transferring numerous files at once, it will benefit you, but if you're just transferring one big file, it won't.

Have you checked the configuration of FTP thoroughly? FTP has the ability to limit how fast connections can transfer and this may be on accidentally.

One other possibility is InfiniBand. It looks to be ~$1500/machine vs. ~$2100/machine for XSan.

Judging by the number of posts in the XSan forum that frames are dropped with XSan, I would say that gig isn't going to cut it. It looks like one of these streams needs ~150 MB/s and that would be, to be solid, both controllers on an XRaid.

  • Cant connect to OSX server over network in recovery mode

    Hi guys.
First of all, thanks for any help you can give me.
I am running osx server on a mavericks mac mini on a home network.  Attached to it I have a 1tb hard drive to which all the macs in my house use time machine to back up over my network and they are stored there.
I have just formatted one of my macs and want to restore it from these time machine backups that are on the osx server on my network.
When i enter recovery mode from boot (COMMAND R), it can see the "backups" on networks "Matts-Mac-Mini" but when i then click "CONNECT" it says "Enter your name and password for the server "Matts-Mac-Mini/local" so that Time Machine can access it.
It gives me a box with NAME and PASSWORD and a CONNECT button.
By DEFAULT the "NAME" it starts with is "root".......which I dont understand.
I have tried every single iteration of names and passwords I can think of but it still wont connect, it either shakes the box or gives an error saying "There was a problem connecting to the server "Matts-Mac-mini.local".  Check the server name of IP address and then try again".
I have tried the log in details for the osx server, the login details for the mac im trying to connect from, used root as the username, tried capitals, no capitals, spaces no spaces etc.  I am at a total loss and about to tear my hair out!!
Is there anyone able to give me any help with this please, I would be SO grateful!
    Many thanks,
    hardtofin

I think I have isolated the password, with a certain username and password the box never shakes and instead gives the error: "There was a problem connecting to the server "Matts-Mac-mini.local".  Check the server name of IP address and then try again".
Are you able to offer any help with this?  I dont see why i can't connect to it, if the imac can already see it?
    Many thanks again,
    hardtofin

  • Photoshop CS2 on OSX Server 10.4.8 or an OSX 10.4.7 partition?

    Hi Gang,
We are trying to use our Xserver running OSX Server 10.4.8 as a central processing center for some of our photo workflow. Our workflow uses some scripts which trigger Photoshop actions. For this to work, it must have access to an OS with an install of CS2.
I seem to have two options. The first is easy. I connect a client running CS2 to the server and use this client as a processing hub for the scripts. I don't like this solution because it will increase network traffic and tie up one of our clients regularly.
A second option would be to run CS2 on the server, either in the OSX Server environment, or to create a partition on the server that runs OSX and has CS2 installed. I don't know whether either of these arrangements is possible.
Has anyone tried to run CS2 on OSX server 10.4.8? I know Adobe doesn't support it, but doesn't mean it won't work. Alternatively, has anyone created a partition on their server that runs OSX 10.4.7?
    Any experience greatly appreciated.

Please don't say that CS2 doesn't work under Rosetta, when it does. There are performance issues, and for those who use CS2 for large, system intensive purposes have good reason to not want to upgrade to Intel, but that doesn't mean CS2 won't work.
I haven't experienced the install problem personally, but googling "cs2""intel""mac" yields this article:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060524084530919
To summarize, it may be an issue with either Quicktime 7.1 or Adobe Version Cue.
    Good luck.

  • Error message when trying to create a user account in WGM

    What is that?
I tried to create the user accounts in Server Preferences/users but I can not login.
It seems that I get a lot trouble with leopard server. Should I reinstall it or go back Tiger?
    Thanks

How come Leopard let me use the WGM in standard mode?
While SA complains that it won't work in Standard Configuration, WGM does not. There is some fault in the logic of this for which I don't have an explanation.
If I want to get control on Dock, selection of Home folder, config of Proxy... which I think are basic things, do I really need the advanced mode?
If you wish to have complete control of all client settings, yes. There really is no disadvantage of using an Advanced configuration other than the learning curve.
So if I switch to advanced mode, there is good chance I won't get this error message anymore, right?
    Yes.

  • 30" Cinema Display OSX Server

I dual boot OSX 10.4.4 and OSX Server 10.4.4 for testing purposes and recently got a 30" Cinema display. My G5 would not boot with the new required video card (NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra). I tried installing the driver for it from the CD that came with the display but it says it requires 10.3.5 or higher and would not install. Does anyone have any idea how I can make this work in server. It works great in OSX 10.4.4, just not in server.
    Kerry

So I installed the card into another G5, a DP 2.0GHz/2GB/160GB running OS 10.4.8 and was able to boot up to 1280x800 resolution, and after installing driver from ATI CD, achieved the maximum 2560x1600 resolution.
    Success! (So I thought.)
Because I thought the problem was the ATI web drivers, so per Malcolm's suggestion I did an archive/install on the original G5, software updates (had to reinstall Adobe CS 2, Suitcase, Quark, what a pain), then installed the card, and it still won't boot pass the blue screen, which was the issue before the archive/install.
I'm stumped, does anyone have any ideas?

  • Osx server domain

Hi all, i have recently shifted from windows server 2008 to mac mini osx server 3.0.
I have a setup of 8 pc runing windows 7 and connected to server 2008 with domain and it works fine.
i just got new mac mini and though to replace window server 2008. i configured my osx server and static ip address and domain name.
but when i change the domain name in windows 7 pc it shows me that no domain name found, i changed the dns ip address in my window 7 pc to my macmini ip address that worked fine but the pc do not except the domain name of osx server but it excepts the windows server domain name.
is there any way where my windows pc excepts the osx server domain name, i have created the user in osx server and set the premission and shared the folders but i want that window pc should login with that user just as it does with window server 2008. please guys help me out with this.

    Hi
Prior to 10.7 (Lion) Apple did provide support for binding PCs to a 'Mac Domain' because in those earlier versions OS X Server acted as an NT 4.0 Domain Controller. With Windows7 Microsoft removed all support for NT 4.0 Domains as explained here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4945
In a nutshell you can't do what you're planning to do. You can however access shares created on OS X Server from a PC. Maybe you should rethink your plan?
