Trying to load windows onto new hard drive from usb, stuck at "starting windows" screen

So I am actually down grading from windows 8 pro to windows 7 pro both 64. I was finally able to get the comp to not only recongize, but load from the usb. My problem is that when it does start up, I get stuck at the "Starting windows" screen. I was wondering maybe I need to format a patition first? It is a new warranty hard drive from Lenovo. (Kind of funny how that send only cds for a laptop that has no cd drive) I looked into formatting from a usb, have had some trouble finding a reliable way.....thanks

Hi davefromsb,
Windows 8 computers come with a "UEFI" bios and therefore will come with "Secure Boot" as well as "UEFI Only" booting enabled. Disable secure boot if you haven't already, and switch the booting method to "Legacy Only". The problem is most likely that the Windows 7 image that was burned to the USB stick was burned using a MBR partition scheme instead of a GPT one. Hope this helps.

  • Install Windows to new Hard drive from USB system backup

I have bought a new 1TB hard drive for my G580 and have created a USB system recovery drive using Windows 8.1's system restore functionality but when I swap the drives out and try to reset the PC to factory setting settings it fails by saying a partition can't be found.  I've formatted partitioned and formatted the new drive but to no avail.
    Any ideas?

  • Can I load "Pages" onto new hard drive without having to pay for it again?

I have a 5 yr old Mac that just had it's hard drive replaced.  I had paid for and loaded Pages onto the original hard drive.  Wondering if there's any way to load Pages onto my new hard drive without having to pay for the program again.  Thanks so much

If you originally installed Pages from a CD or DVD, reinstall it from there.
If you installed Pages from the Mac App Store, yes, from the Apple ID you purchased it with.
If you got Pages from the iTunes App Store, the Mac version of it is a separate purchase.

  • Problems with copying iPhoto library onto new hard drive from external HELP

I had to get a new hard drive installed onto my MacBook Pro, but was able to copy my iPhoto library onto my external hard drive via another computer before the old hard drive failed. Now, I am trying to copy that library back onto my MacBook.
After I copied the library onto the MacBook, when iPhoto was opened, it showed no photos but I could see album titles. Then when I opened iPhoto while holding down the option key, it was all clumped into one event and not nearly all of the photos were there. Also, I have right-clicked on the library to see package contents and everything seems to be there, but I don't know how to make it all show up in the library.
I've downloaded iPhoto Library Manager because I thought that might help (but haven't used it yet -- don't know how) and I just need some help to recover my iPhoto library... and is there a way to restore all the separate events imported and time/date stamps, in order to get all the photos in chronological order?

Should I just go through the iPhoto Library package contents and drag every folder into iPhoto?
No. That will get you massive duplication.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

I'm trying to put movies onto my hard  drive but i can't put the files with the same name onto the hard drive , finder won't let me change the name. What am i doing wrong?

Make a new folder and put them in that different folder. Then the names can be the same as others already on your drive.

i copied itune music from old hard drive to memory disk the copied onto new hard drive into itunes and music wont play unless removalbe disk is inserted

Then your iTunes must be looking at the removable disc, not your hard drive. Did you actually copy the songs onto your computer, or simply tell iTunes to look at the removable drive?
Highlight a song and click on File/Get Info/Summary>Where and check the location that iTunes has listed for the song. What does it say?

However my old photos seem corrupt within aperture.
What kind of corruption? And when do you see it? All your images, or only some? Are the images distorted, discolored, or not displayed at all?
Are you shooting in raw? Is your library referenced or managed? Is your library on your system volume or on an external harddrive?
And it would help to know your MacOS version and Aperture version too.

  • Windows 7 won't load after installing new Hard Drive and Recovery software

    HP G72 Notebook PC
    xz218UAR
I guess a virus crashed my hard drive so I bought a new one.  I installed the new drive and loaded the recovery disks that I also bought from HP.  Apparently Windows didn't load properly and it keeps telling me to RELOAD WINDOWS.  I've tried starting over from Disk 1 but it's not doing anything different to fix it.
I removed the new hard drive and reinstalled it but it's still doing the same thing.
What am I doing wrong and HOW DO I FIX IT?

    Hi,
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
Assuming that this is just a problem with the Recovery process, there is a straight forward work around if you have ( or can borrow ) a retail Windows 7 installation disc that is exactly the same version as your OEM installation - ie if your notebook came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit this is the exact retail version you would need.
If you don't have access to a retail disc, you can create an installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  These Images are clean and from a well-respected source, however there are only limited versions available.
    Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

Any additional drivers you may need can be found Here.

  • I have a new hard drive and itunes and my computer (windows XP) no longer recognise my ipod. I also had the problem with the registry keys not being present but this has now been fixed. However i can no longer link my ipod up with itunes.

When I first tried itunes with my new hard drive there was the problem with the registry keys but something also flagged up about needing a signed driver. Is this anything to do with why Itunes and my computer no longer recognises when my ipod is linked up? Whatever i try under 'devices' my ipod is never available to sync up. If anyone can help I would be most grateful.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately this has not worked. I didn't have quicktime to begin with so I don't know if that makes a difference? After following the instructions, I get the "registry keys missing" problem appear again (which I've subsequently fixed again) and then when I connected the ipod I got the following message - 'Device driver software was not successfully installed'.
I've tried windows update but this doesn't do anything as '...the service is not running'.
    Any suggestions?

  • Replaced Hp with new hard drive but now i cannot install windows 7 recovery disks

Ok, so my laptop is a hp pavilion dv4-2165dx that has a broken screen and sometime after best buy tried to fix it the hard disk blew. I bought a new hard disk and put it in the computer and i got the official recovery and installation disks for windows 7. The hard drive is recognized by the computer and does start the recovery manager but it gets to 1% and does not go further. I let it run all night and the next morning it said that the cd failed. Did it fail because i have to connect an hdmi cord to my lg tv to see anything? Or was it because of something else?
I researched and found that with a new hard drive i will have to partition it and then format it to work with windows 7.
My question is, if the computer doesnt boot or let me use windows how can i partition and format the new hard disk? I have an older hp laptop as well that works efficiently in regard to its age (7) yrs. i wonder if i can buy a usb to sata/ide cord and attach the new disk to my old laptop and partition/format it there? Idk

Hello CaptianNike, welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you're trying to install Windows 7 on a replacement hard drive. I will try to assist you with this.
You definitely could use another computer to format and partition the drive. I'm not certain about the cables you've mentioned though (looked with goolgle and you can get usb to sata cables). If the computer is a desktop you should be able to connect it internally to just do the format/partition.
If the recovery disks worked correctly, then you should have the option to do the format and partition via Windows. This could be an indication as well that there's an issue with the disks.
Which leaves you with the option of obtaining another set of disks to try, or trying to partition first then installing. The easier would be the latter.
    I hope this helps.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

  • 840 photos imported onto new hard drive have no originals

I've been anxious to get my fresh start with iPhoto 6 on a new hard drive. I'm determined to have better photo organization from the start. I've been using this method (which I learned here on the discussion boards) on my laptop recently and it's worked flawlessly. This is how I imported them:
I had my preferences set to let me use Image Capture upon connection to my computer, then I sent all the photos to a folder on my desktop. From that folder I opened all the photos in Preview. There I went through each photo and deleted the bad ones from the folder before importing to iPhoto. I also sorted them into sub folders and gave them names I wanted to appear on their roll titles. At that point I drug each folder over to the library in the left hand column of iPhoto and let them import. After they imported, I hit delete on the folders on my desktop with the belief that they now resided in iPhoto.
I tried dragging a couple of photo onto my desktop so that I could resize them and post them on a forum and it said I couldn't access them because the original was in the trash. I looked at the information panel in iPhoto and it listed all the data, including file size. Here's where I made my terrible mistake. I thought that the computer did not like there being two copies of the originals, one being in the trash, so inspite of the "This action cannot be reversed" warning, I deleted the trash.
Now it appears all I have in my library is the alias of each photo. It will allow me to enlarge the photo momentarily before it tells me there is no original and goes to the dreaded gray blank with the dashed line.. WHY? I imported it. I don't understand.
Am I simply out of luck with this one? Is my only option to size the images of my lost photos to the largest I can before they turn to ghostly blanks and use grab to salvage the small image that's left? Oh how tedious, but I need some of those images! I know the pixels will be gone and the size is less than I want but some I could still use on the forum I want to post them on. I am so disheartened about this.
What's even more aggravating is that this is an empty hard drive and I could have easily drug them out of the trash and put them all in a folder with no strain on my memory. I'm just so used to being up against the wall with no memory left that I hit delete. I'm kicking myself pretty hard right now!

    MacLoyal:
Did you have iPhoto's Advanced preferences set to NOT copy the files into the library when importing? It sounds like it, particularly the Originals folder contains nothing but alias files. If that's the case then you were required to keep those files you so carefully organized in folders. Those are the source files. If you haven't used your Mac a lot you may be able to recover most of them with SubrosaSoft FileSalvage. You can download and run it in demo mode to see who many of the image files it can see and recover before committing to purchase.
Also if you haven't reused the memory cards MediaRECOVER can recover them. It too has a demo mode to see what it can recover.
Bottomline: using the alias mode you must retain those files you imported into iPhoto and should have them in their permanent location before importing.
    Do you Twango?

  • Have Old Hard drive and want to move old data onto new hard drive in imac.

I am trying to get my files off of an old hard drive. I have it hooked up through a sata drive. I am able to access all the programs but for whatever reason I am unable to access any of the files, i.e- 1,00's of pictures, videos, music, and documents. Is there something else I need to do in order to get the files, or is it possible that all the programs could still be on it but the files are just missing? In the current Sata it only has two plugs but on my hard drive it looks like there is another place to plug something in.

    Hello again Shadow,
The way I do this is to:
    1) Install your new hard drive into your iBook
    2) Get your iBook reassembeled
    3) Place your old hard drive in your firewire enclosure
    4) Insert your install DVD into your iBook and restart with the C key held down. When the installer launches, select your language in the first pane, click 'continue' and in the upper dropdown menu in the next page select Utilities > Disk Utility. After DU is open, select your hard drive from the list of volumes on the left (the very top one), and then click the 'Partition' tab to the right. Then select 1 partition (normal) and make sure that you have 'Mac OS Extended (journled)' selected in the lower section. Then click 'partition'
5)Quit disc utility, which brings you back to the installer. continue with your installation of OS X. In one of the first steps you will see a button on the lower left which says 'options' click on that and make sure that the option 'Installs OS X for the first time' is selected. It will normally be selected by default with a new drive.
    6) After the installation, the Migration Assistant will ask if you would like to transfer your information from another mac. click yes then follow the instructions. but instead of using another mac, connect a firewire cable from your enclosure with your old hard drive installed. The installer will think that this is another mac and will transfer all of your account information and user files (everything!)from your old drive to your iBook's new drive. Just diconnect when it says to and complete the installation sequence.
    You're done!
Check back again if anything is unclear.
