Trying to make a DVD with an old/non-existent version of iDVD!

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Please could you help me?
I work at a school in the UK, and have recently been able to purchase an external Lacie DVD drive, as the school’s computer (currently an iBook G4 with OSX 10.3.2 and a 1GHZ Power PC Processor – 640 MB Memory and a 40 GB HD) wasn’t shipped with one – however, I have a problem…
Trying to make a DVD that will play in a stand-alone DVD player – I followed the advice in iMovie Help – but was stopped suddenly on finding that I do not have the relevant version of iDVD (which version (if any – I can’t see it anywhere!) was shipped with iMovie 4.0?). Is it possible to download a copy of iDVD 3 or later from anywhere compatible with OSX 10.3.2 and iMovie 4.0?
The iMovie Help has an additional option to ‘export your movie in a format appropriate for DVD authoring’ which has let me burn the movie as a (name).DV file – but this is not compatible with any DVD player I have tried. I noticed a while ago on this forum that someone was talking about Toast but I do not have this, but I do have Roxio Easy Media Creator 7, which was bundled with the burner – but is only compatible with a PC – would I be able to build a project in iMovie, transfer it to a PC, and use REMC7 to do what toast would?
Finally, I was wondering if anyone has any experience of using Avid’s free DV software – and if they would recommend it (and also if I would be able to make DVDs with it?).
Well thanks for reading if you got this far – and I’d appreciate it if you could offer any advice (I know I’ve not been very concise)…
Kevin.
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.2)

Thanks for the welcome Karsten! I’ve checked the installer disks – which appear to have all the main pieces of software, but not iDVD. If you or anyone knows where it might be hidden that would be great. Thanks for all the other info too!
Thanks Lennart – I don’t think my computer could support iLife ’05 as it is running Mac OSX 10.3.2 and I’ve just been looking at its system requirements which state it requires 10.3.4 minimum – if you know differently, please let me know. As an alternative I have considered getting iLife ’04, but your comment about iLife ’05 being the first version to support external drives worried me (“iDVD 5 is the first iDVD version that officially supports external burners“ does this mean there is an unofficial option for iLife ‘04? Perhaps a patch similar to the one mentioned by Karsten), does that mean iLife ’04 would not support an external Lacie DVD writer?
What is the earliest version of Toast I’d be able to use (as a money saving option!)?
Thank you both, and apoligies for my amateurish questions…
Kevin.

  • My Apple-id want me login with an old non existent e-mailadress

I´ve used the sam Apple-id for many years and I have changed the primary e-mailadress twice since the beginning and the original adress doesn't exist any more. Logging in to my iCloud using my apple-id isn't any problem on my iPhone, iPad or my Mcbook. But yesterday I started up my iMac after a long time not using it and I upgraded the os to Yosemite. Now it wants me to log in to iCloud using my old non-existent emailadress. And when I try, it says something like "You can't log in because your account has been inactivated by security reasons."  And then it suggests me to reset the password at http://iforgt.apple.com.
To reset your password  you have to recieve an email on how to reset the password. But since the email-adress doesn't exist any more thats not an option. It then suggests me to answer my security question and first you have to enter your birthdate but when I do that Apple says it doesn't match with the birthdata I've entered 10 years ago.
So, how do I solve the problem?

You need to give Apple Support a call - only they will be able to help you and activate the account again. See this webpage on how to contact Apple Support in your country: There are either telephone numbers given or an email form:

  • I am trying to make a DVD of my old home movie with a new iMac

I have been un-sucessful at creating a DVD of some older 8mm tapes.
I pick-up the Roxio VHS to DVD capture software.
I connected my Sony Video 8 VCR and captured the 120 min Video.
I am not sure what to do next.
Roxio captured the video, but put it in Quicktime format (.MOV)
Should I import the file into iMovie?
Should I import it into file conversion software?
Do I need a burner Software?
    Any help would be appreciated.

So if the video is now in a .mov file, yes, you can import it into iMovie to edit if you'd like, add titles, or whatever. When finished, please use the export using Quicktime function under Share in file menu and use the highest quality settings you can under Options (depending on the size of your video - is it widescreen (probably not coming from VHS), etc. - you may need to experiment for the best settings. The other options in Share are not as customizable. These are what I use (but that is with video shot in full HD):
When it's done exporting, you will need a burn software to get it on a DVD to play in a DVD player. The best would be iDVD which is part of the retail iLife 09 or 11 suits, available at Amazon, ebay, and other online sellers. Or you can buy Roxio Toast, excellent software, but doesn't have the cool customizable menu options iDVD has. Or there are free options like Burn - just basics.
Edit: is yours one of the brand new iMacs? If so, you don't have a Superdrive/optical drive built in, so you'll need an external burner.

  • Trying to create a dvd with video and slides...need help

I am trying to make a dvd that includes video from my sister's wedding but I would also like it to include slideshows that I have already created in iDVD. Her wedding video was taken in to a shop and put onto a DVD. I would like to take the video from that DVD and combine it with my slideshows so that everything is on one disc. Plus, the menus (or lack thereof) from the DVD the shop made are HORRIBLE. Can someone tell me how to do this?
Also, if you could explain how to insert chapters into the video once I have it into iDVD that would be appreciated. They did not include these on the DVD from the shop so it's one long movie with no way of skipping ahead short of fast forwarding.
Thank you very much for any input.
    Michael

    Hi, Michael,
I did for my daughter's wedding what you are trying to do for your sister's. You can do it this simple way:
I took her wedding DVD and copied some of it onto DV tape and imported that into iMovie where I edited it down to some clips I wanted to go with the still photos I already had.
To copy the DVD footage, I just put the disk into our DVD player, connected my camcorder and recorded it. Yes, there was a slight loss of quality, but not very detectable in the final product. After all, I am not a professional wedding videographer and some of the stills were from inexpensive snapshot cameras.
The final video still turned out well.
I actually did another longer one, this time using the original DV footage from the wedding videographer--he let us have it because he took so long to make the DVD! The DVD I made from that is of course better quality, but not that much better that I would go to more trouble to get it.

I've been trying to make an account with iTunes n everytime I get to the part of the credit card that's as far as I get because I dnt have one, how can I make an iTunes account without a credit card??

    Where are you located?
Just go and buy an iTunes gift card at any store in your country.
Then follow all the steps you did, but when it asks you for the credit card number, there shoujld be a GIFT CARD option which will let you load your account witht eh funds form the gift card without providing a credit/debit card #.

I am having serious issues trying to alter my old iCloud account with an old non-functioning email to my new apple id with a new email address. The message keeps coming up on all my apple products with my old email (which is not available anymore).

I have the same problem - it is maddening. I rely on this iPad for work so this is not just an annoyance! The above solutions of changing the appleid on the device or on the website do not work.
The old email address no longer exists - I haven't used it in a year probably and I no longer have the account.  I logged into the appleid website and there is no trace of the old email address so there is nothing that can be deleted or changed there.  On the iPad there is no trace of the old email address so nothing can be deleted there either. I have updated the iPad software and the same problem comes right back.  Every 2 seconds I am asked to log in using the old non-existent email.  The device is currently useless.
The only recent change to anything was the addition of an Apple TV device, which was set up using the correct login and password.
Does anyone have any ideas? The iPad has been backed up to the iCloud so presumably it now won't recognize the current iCloud account? So restoring may notbe an option?

Trying to make a dvd from a project and this error message appears .The project could not be prepared for publishing because an error occurred. (-2125)

    Hi
    Error -2125
OK Error code - 2125 usually indicates that the movie is to large.
It use to pop up when going to iDVD !
iDVD - DO NOT CARE ABOUT Gbs at all. I got movies on 500Mb that do not fit and 50Gb that fits nicely.
iDVD - ONLY CARES ABOUT - Duration. Duration is Movie time + MENU TIME. Choice of
menu and animation of this can take lost of "DURATION" 15 minutes or even more.
Choice of encoding method and use of SL or DL DVDs determine the DVD limit.
    iDVD 08 & 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
DL DVDs can store about double of these times.
ALTERNATIVE - The Error Code can indicate that free space on Start-up (BOOT) hard disk is
    less than 25Gb (my minimum)

If you are getting OSStatus error -2125, I've seen this caused by the computer display sleep settings.
Try changing the sleep settings to never and see if you are able to export.

  • I produced a film in iMovie and send it to iDVD to make a DVD with a theme. When everything was ready it starts at my mac-computer. But at the TV the theme always comes at the end of the film not at the beginning. What have I to change, what´s wrong?

I produced a film in imovie and send it to idvd to make a dvd with a theme. After finishing all the dvd starts in my mac-computer and first comes the theme and then the film.
But when I start it with a dvd-recorder at tv first the film comes an at the end of the film the theme comes. What did I wrong? Where is my mistake?

    Hi
    A. Do not Use - Share to iDVD - in any iMovie version at all !
    B. Start a BRAND NEW iDVD project
    C. in iMovie'08 to 11 -  Share to Media Browser and as LARGE - NOT HD or other resolution as quality will be even worse
    - in iMovie HD6 - just close it and from within iDVD import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it)
    - FinalCut - Export as QuickTime Movie - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION - AT ALL !
    D. When in iDVD - see to that in the Lay-out menu (when it looks like a box-plott) there ARE NOTHING in the upper left most box (Auto Start box). As this overruns any Menu.
    E. Save as a DiskImage - TEST this first - befor burning any DVDs

  • Can I Make A DVD With Video & 24-Bit Audio?

I want to make a DVD with videos and, as a special feature, 13 24-bit enhanced playable audio tracks.
    Is this possible in iDVD?
    Thanks!

Toast 8 has a 96kHz/24-bit option in making Music DVDs as well as a 48 kHz/24-bit option. (Note: these are NOT DVD-Audio discs which require a special player.)
'Normal' Toast audio is 48 kHz/16-bit.

What settings are you using to export the video with?  I think 29.97fps is the only one that works with LR 5:

  • I am trying to make a DVD of some of my photos in iPhoto 11.   The photos are in iPhoto, but in one of my external hard drives.   I have been able to make DVD's just recently, but not now.  What can I do?  At the end I get a notice of "failure

HELP, HELP, I am having difficulty making a DVD-R  of some photos I have in one of my folders in iPhoto 11.   I use iPhoto on my external HD.   I have never had problems before today making copies of my photos using DVD-R disk.   I am doing the same thing that worked before.   Some of my photos are going to be put in a gallery for showing and I need to make a DVD so they can choose which ones to display and enlarge the photos.   It was due TODAY!  Yikes!  At the end of each try I get a window saying "BURN FAILED - The burn to the OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S drive failed.  The disk drive didn't respond properly and can't recover or retry."    help...........

How are you getting the photo onto the disk to burn?  Have you tried exporting then to a folder on the Desktop and then burning that folder to disk using the Finder.  That will give you a data disk with just the jpeg image files in the folder.
If that's what you're doing and getting the burn failed then it's a system or optical drive issue.
If you're using the Share  ➙ Burn menu in iPhoto that will create a disk with a mini iPhoto library on it that can only be used by another Mac running iPhoto.
Can you elaborate on your workflow.

  • Is it possible to make a DVD with non-standard sized movies, w/o scaling?

I have some software tutorial material that I want to turn into a DVD. Since the video was created as a screen capture of a particular piece of software, the finished video is an odd size of 830 x 622 (I wanted to capture the screen dumps at their actual resolution, which looks crystal clear - and that was the size of the software's main window.) Note that this is still 4:3.
I edited the material in FCP 5, made a custom sequence setting of 830 x 622, and the exported final results are QT movies with a size of 830 x 622. We then flash-encoded these for web-broadcast at a size of 640x480.
What I am wondering is: now that we want to make a DVD, can a DVD be made that keeps this video at the larger size, so that it is crystal clear? So far, I experimented with using a few of the DVD format encoding options in Compressor, and it seems to end up as 640x480 no matter what I do.

I think you might be mistaken about the 720x480. When I make a new sequence in FCP, it calls 720x480 3:2, not 4:3. If I set it 4:3 (which is one of the two allowed DVD standards), it becomes 640x480.
Indeed, I have been trying various export experiments from Final Cut with Compressor using presets such as "DBD Best Quality 120 minutes - 4:3", and they all come out as 640 x 480. Furthermore, I can import them into DVD Studio 4 and they seem to work normally for now.
So, dragging my 830x622 QT movies directly into compressor and applying the above preset results in very good-looking, 640x480 MPEG-2 video. I had hoped there was some way to keep the higher-resolution of 830x622, but apparently DVD only supports a few standard pixel dimensions (4:3 at 640x480, 16:9...)
