Trying to migrate a Windows library over to Mac OS X

Hello all,
I am trying to migrate my music library (iTunes) that I created on a Windoze machine over to my new Mac. For some reason the Windows external drive will not be seen by the Mac machine and I get an error asking if I want to initialize the Windoze external drive. I know that this will format the drive and erase my music. Is there some software or way to simply copy from the external drive to my new computer? Also when I did try to copy from one to the other, it would start and then somewhere in the process it would say: "unable to copy file" or something like this and the entire process would abort and it would have to be started over. It does not say which file is causing the problem so I have no idea where to begin again.
Thanks and hope I explained this okay.

  • Windows Library transfer to Mac

I have an old Viao with a large iTuns library. How do I transfer this data to my new MacBook?

Are all of your songs on your iPod purchased music from the iTunes store? Because as far as I know only purchased music can be transfered from your iPod to your iTunes, and that is only with iTunes 7.
When i moved my windows music to my mac a few months ago i Used this
    Senuti - Mac Only
    http://www.fadingred.org/senuti/
It has very good instructions, worked well for me. Took my music off my ipod and onto my mac, then I was able to import it into my library.

  • Trying to migrate from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 7 Professional (x64). Have issues. Please help. Thank you.

I have a 128 GB SSD drive and I bought a 512 GB SSD recently.  I used the disk copy utility to copy all the information from the 128 GB drive to the 512 GB drive. However, Windows 7 Ultimate N x64 is asking me to enter my key for validation. Unfortunately,
I cannot find the key used to install Windows 7 Ultimate N. When I used another valid key for Windows 7 Ultimate N, it would not accept the key because it is looking for the original key.  Since I didn't want to do a clean install, I was
willing to 'upgrade' to Windows 7 Professional x64. I went into the registry and changed the Product Name to Windows 7 PROFESSIONAL and I changed the EditionID to Professinal. When I was trying to install Windows 7 Professional, I received the following message:
The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.
Your current version of Windows is more recent than the version you are trying to upgrade to. Windows cannot complete the upgrade.
There is not enough free space on partition (K:). A total of 15 megabytes (MB) of free disk space is required. Try Disk Cleanup, or moving files to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive, and then restart the installation.
When I tried to rename one of my drive to K using disk management, it says the drive letter K is already mapped to a network share or a local path.  In order to see the volume after the operation, you must remove current mapping.
What am I doing wrong?  Please help. Thank you so much.

You can't just change the product name and have it work.  At this point your best bet is to
go to this thread and follow the directions and post your results in a new thread in
the Windows Genuine Forums.  That way, they can determine exactly which type of install you have and what your options are.

  • Migrating old iPhoto Library to new Mac

    Hi,
I recently experienced a hard drive crash on my 5 yr old iMac, so I've purchased a new one instead of repairing and upgrading the old one.  I now have a large iPhoto library on a backup drive (drag file copy, not Time Machine, and yes I am using Time Machine now...).  Since I started with an older version of iPhoto, I have the Library folder with all the folders visible inside, like the Originals, Modified, etc.  I was surprised to see that the iPhoto Library on my new system is a single file.  I had hoped to just drag the existing folders to the appropriate location on the new Mac.  Barring that, I tried importing the Library from my backup drive into iPhoto '11 on my new system (by just highlighting the Library folder in the import window), and boy what a mess I have now.  Most events appear two or three times, with some folders containing all the photos, some containing smaller versions (some type of thumbnails I presume).  I had around 25K photos on the old system, now I have over 55K after importing them to the new Mac.  After having spent a gajillion hours editing the original photos for dust, color correction, etc, I'm not at all interested in re-doing all this work.  I've done some searching but can't find any documentation on moving my old Library to my new iMac.  Any suggestions or a good URL would be great.
    Thanks
    Lou

Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
In your case I woukd simply start over. Trash that Library on the new machine.
To migrate a Library to a new machine is simple:
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine (or in your case, from the Hard Drive) to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
I was surprised to see that the iPhoto Library on my new system is a single file.
Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Accessing the files in the Library via the Finder has not been supported on any version of iphoto. As an FYI:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Migration from Windows Live mail to Mac mail

    Hello Friends,
Please try and help me out as need a solution desperatly.
At present, I am using Windows live mail and intend to move from Microsoft to Mac. I have got many emails on my server host which would be easy to migrate as per the normal procedure. But I have archived most of my emails. I have created few additional folders and moved the emails from the server inbox to these respective folders. But those has been saved on the hard drive of the computer and not on the server.
I have been using windows live mail for 2 yrs and have got a lot of emails in these archived folders and is very systematic. I tried speaking to Apple guys at their outlets but never got a comcrete answer for the migration where by these folders will remain as it is and wont get jumbled. One of their staff said, it is not possible as emails will get under one folder and wont be as what is intially but as a result I will lose all the hard work.
I am trying to give as much information so I can get a solution to it. I even tried to speak to the server host but they said I have to create individual folders and mose th foldres again which is a very tedious process.
    Kindly get me a solution.
    Regards,
    Jaideep

    Hello,
    Many thanks for the reply.
I am using Windows Live mail on my Microsoft pc. And Mac air will be latest so i think it is Mac mail.
I am only more concerned of my saved folders and its email contenets. Someone said I need to transfer it back to my server and then if I migrate all of it will get transferred. Is it correct or some other solution.

  • HT1661 I am trying to migrate using firewire to a new mac.

When cables are connected and the old mac is rebooted as target disc the new mac cannot see the old mac to start migration. I have update all software. (old mac 10.6.8 and new mac is 10.7) any ideas. The new mac asks: 'make sure both computers are connected to the same network'

The target disk mode is not working.
Just use a external drive to copy from the old Mac
Then create the same named user accounts on the new machine, log into each of them and import their respective files manually into their Music, Pictures Movies, Documents folders, should be done a lot faster than Migration over Wifi.
Don't copy 10.6 Library, that's different in 10.7 and now hidden. Don't copy the entire users folder, just the contents of Music, Docs, Pics etc into the same folders on the 10.7 machine. Drag and drop copy, simple and elegant, less issues.
Programs: reinstall these from fresh sources using the same license codes, delete off the old machine.
Some times you have to contact the developer for a new key for the new machine, the old key is retired.
This method is better than using Migration Assistant, less chances of problems/corruption/slow downs, you'll have to tweak things a bit more again of course, minor really.
As you should know you can't use older PPC based programs on the 10.7 machine anyway.

  • No cover anymore after migration from Windows XP Itunes to Mac Itunes

I've migrated from my poor old PC laptop to my beautifull new Mac Pro. It was very easy with the media (they were all in an external hard disk) and the playlists through an USB key but I cannot find my covers (about 300 albums). What can I do ? Thank for your help.

Yes I transferred the artwork folder in the Itune folder such as it was in the windows configuration but I'm not sure I must keep this structure for the mac. Apparently no link can work between this former folder and the albums. As regard "advanced menu > get artwork" I think it's to recover some covers directly fron a database on the net - not from my own data.

  • Migrating iTunes library from a Windows PC to a Mac

    Hi.
If I previously have iTunes on a Windows PC and want to migrate the enitre library to a Mac, how do I do it? I've got all the files transfered over the traditional way - via an external hard drive - but I can't bring the playlists over. I'd hate to have to start creating playlists again.

my iPhoto library is stored on an external hard drive.  any ideas how to fix this? I've tried doing a permission repair through iPhotos but that didn't help.

  • I migrated my iphoto library yesterday - now won't open.

I migrated my large (almost 400gb) iPhotos library to Photos yesterday and it seemed to work.  I could scroll through photos, edit, see the whole libray, etc.  Now Photos is saying it can't open the Photos Library.photoslibrary (System Photo Library).  It tried to repair but said to choose another library.  What should I do?  The iPhoto Library is still listed there.  Should I click on that and let it try again?

Great, that you got it working!
The iPhoto library was evidently too large to migrate and everything got stuck trying to migrate the large library.
The size of the library should not matter. However, the free storage on your Mac does. If you are running out of storage because the library is so large, then the migration might not succeed.
If you have less than 10GB of storage, don't try anything at all, that might need additional storage. I'd try to keep at leat 20GB of storage free at all times.
