Trying to network iBook (OS9) w/ G4 running 10.3.9

Some of the other threads on here helped me with the set up but when I make the connecting from the G4 it asks which disk I'd like to mount but gives me no choices. My G4 does not have Classic installed. Is that the reason it can't get anywhere with the iBook? Does anyone have a way that I can connect the two so I can get files off the iBook?
Thanks!
Erin

Hi Erin. You don't need Classic, although connecting OS 9 to OS 9 is way smoother and easier.
First you have to start up sharing on both machines: the Tenner in System Preferences>Sharing and the Niner in the FileSharing Control Panel, be sure to check "Enable clients to connect over TCP/IP" on the Niner.
Next you have to allow selected users to connect: When you're having troubles getting set up, it's easiest to allow a user to connect with no Password until you're setup's OK. Alternatively, make both machine's Owner/User and Owner/User's Password exactly (emphasizing "exactly") the same. Later you can change to whatever security complexity gives you comfort. On the Niner this is done in the Users and Groups part of the FileSharing CP: enable Guest or create a User to match a User on the Tenner. On the Tenner in System Prefs>Accounts do the same, but don't create one called Guest UNIX as that would mess up UNIX's existing 'guest' user.
One more thing FWIW: on the Tenner, find Directory Access in Utilities and make sure AppleTalk access is enabled. Ditto in the confusing Network Pane of System Prefs, where you must also make sure you have your internet and ethernet settings enabled.
Finally: make sure you have a functioning physical (OK, wireless will do but you're adding more things for Murphy's Law to act on) connection between the machines. Best would be ethernet wired to a router connected to the internet, and it's what you should aim for in your dream world. That way if each machine can surf da' Weeb, you know the wiring is OK, and Bonus! each will have a static IP address assigned by the router. Once each machine knows its opposite's number, connection's almost easy, and since the IP numbers are static, so is re-connecting
Next best is both separately but simultaneously on the internet. In that case each will have an IP assigned by your internet service provider (usually using DHCP). You can read the Niner's IP addy in the TCP/IP Control Panel and the Tenner's in System Prefs>Network (which is where, if all else fails, you actually turn on AppleTalk) and enable Ethernet (On the Niner that's in AppleTalkCP Connect via: Ethernet)
If you must use AppleTalk because one or both machine lacks an IP addy, be warned that the Tenner hates AT, and that there's really no tinkering I can suggest. It can be made to work; I've done it; I haven't any notion how.
So now: restart both machines, just to make the whole thing a bigger deal, and when they're both up and proven by internet connection, use Chooser (click on AppleShare) or NetworkBrowser (in your Apple Menu) from the Niner and the the Tenner's Finder>Go>Network or Go>Connect to server… menu to see and connect to the other. The usual double clicking on the other puter's icon should make it happen. If it doesn't you may have to enter the target box's IP addy in the appropriate place in Chooser or Servers windows.
Once you have made a connection, you'll find that even having one owner's name and p-word for both doesn't get you clear of X's owner/permissions swamp. The Shared and dropbox folders are the only ones I'd count on being able to access. But you can certainly alter ownerships and such at you own risk. Going the other way, the Owner is the owner, those are your files on the Niner. But any Guests or other Users will need to have access set in the Get info… window of each volume, file or folder using the Sharing drop down. I was once warned never to "…copy these privileges to all enclosed" but I can't say why and I've never felt the need to.
Once you're connected, make aliases of the Tenner's target files on the Niner. Double clicking them later will bring up the connection dialogue window like magic. Sadly, it's positively dangersous to try the operation going the other way as the Tenner will freeze for quite while, searching the known universe for its OS9 buddy, before it tells you there's no such machine known.
If you were bootable in OS 9 on both machines, I'd very strongly urge you to do your transfer that way. Nine was filesharing "for the rest of us", but if this is going to be an ongoing thing (as X most certainly is) then you might as well start tasting the raw computerese the PCPeople have grown up with which is Networking in X. If you can't make it work, I'd suggest a follow-up post in that branch of the Forums, but with the caveat that straight crossposting's not done.
Hope this helps, I had no idea I would run so long. FWIW many have told me 10.2 (Jaguar's) networking was as easy as OS9's used to be, but that 10.3 broke it. So do not give up to soon, many others have shared your frustration.

So sorry to hear about the trouble with Wi-Fi! Let's get that working the way it should. Could you provide us some more details regarding where this breakdown occurs? Are you having trouble with turning Wi-Fi on or connecting to your Wi-Fi? Are other devices connecting to your Wi-Fi without issue?

Hi - I'm trying to sync iBooks on my Macbook Pro with iBooks running on my iPad. I have some pdf's download from the net I want to share between devices and I can't work out how to sync the two devices. Any help please? I'm running Mavericks

Thanks for your help Brij011 - much appreciated. Apologies as I'm a newbie but I've looked at the info for synching and I appear to have all the switches flicked on my iPad. Does the iPad and iBooks only sync in iCloud for purchases as I appear to be doing something wrong. I could sync ok when books was in iTunes but since migrating to Mavericks I think I'm doing something wrong!!

  • Can see my networked ibook but greyed out after trying to connect

When I try to connect to my networked ibook everthing looks normal at first - I can see it in the network window, after selecting it I choose connect, enter user name and password and click ok, I select the name of the volume to mount from the list and .... well, normally within moments I would make the connection, see the HD etc. Now, suddenly, nothing happens. If I try again, this time after pressing connect I see the volume to mount list as before but the choices are greyed out. Any ideas?

  • Trying to network my hp deskjet 6940 printer via a new win 7 64 pc. the printer shows as "offline"

I am trying to network my hp deskjet 6940 printer via a new win 7 64 pc.  The printer is visible but shows as "offline" and will not respond.
Can the  hp deskjet 6940 printer operate over a lan using a win 7 64 pc?
    Thanks!

    Borneodiver,
Since the site says the driver is already in Windows 7, then a different method of adding the printer will need to be performed to get the driver from Windows Update.
First, uninstall the printer from the Windows 7 system.
    1.  go to devices and printers and select Add Printer at the top.
    2.  Select Add a local printer.
    3.  Create a new port with port type Local Port.
    4.  The port name will indicate where the printer is located.  The format will be \\<computer name>\<printer share name>.  Leave out the < > symbols.  For me, this would be \\mycomputer\printer.
    5.  The next screen will show a list of various printers.  Click the Windows Update button to update the list to the most current.
    6.  Select your model printer from the list.
The rest of the prompts should continue from there without any issue.  I do not have a photosmart 7760 to get the rest of the prompts from there, but it should work after these steps are completed on the Windows 7 system.
If the printer was added using the network option, then it won't work on Windows 7 and there won't be an option for the driver since a network driver doesn't really exist for the printer since it is not natively networked.
Selecting the network option is usually selected in this process and it appears to not work with printers that are shared from a computer.  This process tricks the Windows 7 system into running the printer as if it was actually connected to the printer, but the port name directs it to the host computer.
    Let me know what happens.
I did find these steps here in jimbo45's post.  I did perform the steps with a different computer and printer successfully, but it should work in this scenario as well.

  • Network Diagnostic Service won't run, Symantec turned off, yellow triangles by all network devices

We have a Lenovo laptop that suddenly cannot connect to the network (Windows 2008 R2 domain). The o/s is Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. The system tray icon shows that no network connections are available. When I run the troubleshooter, Windows detects that the Network
Diagnostic Service is not running, and when the troubleshooter attempts to fix it, nothing happens.
Looking in Device Manager, I see a Realtek LAN card, a Cisco wireless card, Teredo Tunneling adapter, and 5 WAN miniports. All are showing a yellow triangle. Under Unknown Devices, I have one device with a question mark and 5 with yellow triangles. I tried
uninstalling/reinstalling the network adapters, but it made no difference.
In addition, I got a message yesterday in the Action Center that Symantec Endpoitn Protection and Windows Firewall were both turned off. This made me suspect malware, but a Malwarebytes scan did not turn up anything. I am now trying a scan in Safe mode.
I've googled this extensively and have seen articles about Teredo Tunneling issues and Network Diagnostic Service issues, but I am not sure of the root of my problem. I don't want to try registry edit solutions or uninstall anything else if those solutions
    are not my specific issue.
    Any help appreciated.

    Hello Peg2011,
Have you made any changes before the laptop can’t connect to the network?
Please take the following steps for troubleshooting:
    1. Update the network cards drivers from the manufacturer website
    2. If you still can’t connect to the network, please run the command ipconfig /all to check if the IP information is right and share us the result.
As this issue occur suddenly, you could try to use the system restore to return your PC's system files and programs to a time when everything was working fine.
For more information about system restore, please take a look at the following article.

    Thanks again.

  • Trying to network two home computers with RT31P2

Hey everyone.  I'm having a maddening time trying to network two home computers together.  As it stands there are three total computers in the household.  Desktop A, Desktop B, and a Laptop.  As it stands, the Laptop and Desktop A can interact with each other using the "Workgroups" function.  However, I can't get Desktop B to interact with either of the others.  It just so happens that Desktop B is running Vista, while the other two use XP.
    So to recap:
    Desktop A uses XP
    Desktop B uses Vista
    Laptop uses XP
Using a RT31P2 Broadband Router (which the two desktops are connected to)
And a WAP54G Wireless-G access point (for the laptop)
How can I get Desktop B to interact with the other two?  My main goal is for Desktop A and the Laptop to be able to connect to Desktop B to share files and use it's printer.

The very first thing you need to be able to ping the ip address of individual pc from another one & also make sure that you disable the firewalls on all the pc's & you need to enable file & printer sharing on your pc & you should be able to interact each pc from another one.

I would try another restore of the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. Maybe something went wrong in the process. Make sure everything works before applying any updates and adding any hardware or software.
Then add things carefully, rebooting Windows and testing the USB and audio at each step.
    Please note this.
The only info windows gives me for the sound card is that it from Microsoft... with a driver version of 6.1.7601.17514....which naturally doesn't really help me since I have no idea what card or mobo I have . Is there any way for me to find out what I need other than opening up my laptop?
Every one of them lists my mobo simply as a Toshiba motherboard, with no audio card information. Which I'm assuming that is because it has an internal sound processor. My problem is that none of the properties, or ANYTHING I try, will give me information on what I need to fix this...
All of the latest drivers for your model are easily found here. This one is for the sound.

    Thankyou thankyou thankyou!
    Natalie.

I just tried running the Lenovo Hard Drive Quick Test both in normal mode and in safe mode.  Both times it indicated a failed read test on the HDD. The last two tests also failed.  I forget what those tests were called.
I am really beginning to think I have a bad HDD and the problem just happens to be in the reserved partition where my factory system software resides.

Definitely sounds like an issue with your Wi-Fi network. Do any other devices on the network have similar issues? Is it an issue only with downloading apps? You can check by trying to load a website in Safari.
I would try turning your Wi-Fi router off for 1 minute, and back on again.
After doing that, disconnect and re-join the Wi-Fi network on your iPhone and try downloading an app again.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.
