Trying to Open File in Pages

I'm trying to open a file in pages and receiving the following error:
The file “Mitch Hatter Project Status 042514.pages” couldn’t be opened.
I updated the file and closed it but now cannot open the document.
Suggestion please!

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5/5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.1 sometimes can not open its own files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has not only managed to confuse all its users, but also itself.
Note: Apple has removed over 95 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

Select one of the files, Choose GetInfo from the Finder's File menu, look for the field named "Open With", and choose Preview from the adjacent menu. Accept that ALL such files will Open with Preview, and your major problems should be solved.
Occasionally, a particularly complex .pdf file or one that needs to be modified and re-written will not work quite right with Preview, but such issues are rare.

Crashes after trying to open file!?

I'm trying to open files in Elements 11. Finder quickly flashes up then disappears. After that, all the menu options are greyed out (including "QUIT"). I then need to Force Quit. Can't get any further!

Are you using OS X Mavericks? If so, you need to get your finder windows and the PSE Open window out of cover flow view. Switch to List or icon view instead.

I am doing a small project on dedicated web client where in user automatically logs in non-root user and Firefox automatically starts.
I am using Fedora 14 kernel 2.6.35.12-88.fc14.i686 and Firefox 3.6.16.
I have installed only Gnome in my computer with no Nautilus or other file browser on it.

First, I sent an email to the author of PhotoME to inform him of the serious issues his addon caused with Firefox latest versions.
Now, for those of you who do not have the PhotoME addon and yet experience the same problem that I had and that I described above, I suggest the following strategy.
As PhotoME did cause these problems with Firefox latest versions, I am pretty covinved other addons probably might cause these problems too. Therefore, adopt the following method.
Test one addon at a time to see if this particular addon is behind your Firefox issues like the ones I had.
So, disable one addon only at a time. Then close your Firefox and restart it from scratch and see if you still have your Firefox problems. You must restart the Firefox browser from scratch. If you still have these Firefox problems, re-enable the disabled addon, restart your Firefox (again!) and repeat the same method for every single addon that you have.
Try to be selective by choosing first addons that are more likely to cause your Firefox problems such as not very well-known or not very popular addons (like it was the case for the PhotoME addon).
If this method works or if it does not work, report it on this web page so that others can be helped with your comments.
I hope this method will help you because I was really upset that I had these Firefox problems and I first thought it was the fault of Firefox, only to discover later that this PhotoME addon was the culprit and had caused me such upset.

Safari freezes when trying to open files.

I am trying to open files on my computer through Safari. I am trying to open a file through Avery.com, but it's not Avery that is the problem, I don't believe. All I have to do is open Safari, click on File>Open File, and the same thing happens every time: it freezes. I've never had a problem with it before until now and I am extremely frustrated.
The "Open File" window pops open and all the iMovies start to try to load up. Well, I don't want to open iMovies, I want to open a file that is on my desktop. But I can't click on "desktop;" I can't click on anything. The little rainbow-colored icon starts spinning and Safari freezes up. I thought maybe the computer was just trying to load a bunch of videos, so I went away for a while (nearly an hour), but when I came back, that stupid rainbow-colored disc was still spinning away and I had to force a "quit."
I have restarted the computer, I have updated the computer, I have checked the Internet Plug-ins (of which I have none. Is this because I emptied the cache and deleted all history? I thought maybe that would help safari, but it didn't), and now I have no idea what to do.

Check Safari/Preferences - Extensions.
And empty the Safari cache either from the menu bar, Safari/Empty Cache or Command + Option + E on your keyboard.
And try restarting your Mac.

PAGES 09 CAN'T OPEN FILE FROM PAGES APP IPAD IOS 1.7

This morning I was trying to open a file from the iCloud window of my Pages 0.9 - 4.2 on my iMac (Os 10.8.3) when I did so the window told me that I needed a new version of Pages and it sent my to the appstore, pointing to Pages 09 4.3.
I was shocked...another 17 euro to buy the some software I already have!!! Anyway...I was in a rush so I had to buy it...I tried to do so but the AppStore didn't want to sell it to me! It said: "This app is already istalled on your Mac, check for updates". Of course there were no updates to be downloaded...so I'm here asking for you help!

PS: the file I was trying to open had been created a few hours erlier on my iPad (updated to the latest IOS, 1.7)

Go to this page http://www.apple.com/support/pages/ and look at the right side. There are links to iWork 9.3. Doenload it and update. Hopefully it will work.

Excess open files in pages

i was trying to access some info on 70 or so microsoft word files and opened them in pages. realizing i should of just used spotlight ( which i have done to get what i needed) ... my problem is now i can't use pages as it has locked up. i can't close the open window's and get to work. any help with a force quit of open files would be lovely.

Command-Option-Escape keys opens the "Force Quit" dialog window.
Hold down the shift key when launching Pages to close the previous windows.

Wireshark crashes when trying to open file

This is very inconvenient, as I use this app very often... yesterday, I was analyzing some tcpdumps, and all was working fine. Suddenly, when trying to open another file, wireshark crashed... and does so ever since when I want to open a file. Error message in X11 is
"The program 'wireshark' received an X Window System error.

I've reinstalled X11 as well as wireshark, but to no avail. I'm not very familiar with the X Windows system, I've only ever used it for wireshark (and ethereal before that).

This is a bug in the version of X that Apple shipped with Leopard. You can see here for some pre-release patches of Xquartz that fix this bug: http://www.x.org/wiki/XDarwin
All you need to update to fix this bug is Xquartz, so you could follow the "Binary Installation" for Xquartz itself. Or, you can use the Quick Install that includes patches of some other components, that fixes various other bugs or contains programs that allow you to work around them.

Trying to open file in photoshop elements, only first option available in Edit Photo window. The other two has "Edit a Copy is not applicable to raw or Digital Negative files" same for Edit Original.

Brand new user to Lightroom 5. Was following tutorials and doing fine editing. After done editing NEF files, I'm trying to open them in PSE 11 to further edit. Using the "Edit Photo with Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor". But the window only has the first option available and the other two grayed out. Each of those has "...is not applicable to raw or Digital Negative files." What??

What you've done is hit the wall on is the basic difference between lite duty spot healing and photo level tone and color correction (Lightroom and Camera Raw) and heavy duty pixel retouching in Photoshop.
When you need to substantially manipulate the "pixels" you need Photoshop and you'll be forced to render the raw file into a TIFF or PSD file either through Camera Raw or more better, via Lightroom.
You can do the basic tone and color correction directly in Lightroom and edit in Photoshop from Lightroom. But you will NEED to create and save out a "rendered" image that is no longer raw...then retouch to your heart's desire, save it and it'll be available in Lightroom along side your original raw if you choose.
But no, there's no way to open a raw in Photoshop, manipulate the heck out of it with massive retouching then save that back out as a raw file...ain't gonna happen.

Opening Files in Pages, Preview, Numbers, etc.

How do prevent these apps from opening up several documents at once? I double click on a file to open it and suddenly my desktop is full of windows of files that I've used previously . . . I would like to only open files I intend to open.

You can try this first...
Before choosing Restart, Sleep or Shutdown there is a checkbox you can uncheck to prevent the apps from launching.
Also in System Preferences > General there is a hard-to-find checkbox under "Number of recent items you can turn off.
In addition there is a hard-to-find check box in System Preferences >
System Preferences > General
UN chekmark "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps".
Restart.
Also, holding the shift key when launching should supress resume.
If that doesn't do it... go to Terminal
If you want to turn it off on a per app basis, (Pages is by example, replace Pages with the name of the app)
Launch Terminal and copy/paste this at the prompt...
defaults write com.apple.Pages NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false
Press return.
To turn off Resume globally...
chflags uchg ~/Library/"Saved Application State"
Press return
The reverse of the first one is to replace false with true.
The reverse of the second one is
chflags nouchg ~/Library/"Saved Application State"
