Trying to optimize a home network with ABS, AE and a router!  New advice!

I currently have this setup:
Cable modem going into a linksys router.
1 line goes to an imac
1 line goes to an emac
1 line goes to a silly windows pc
1 line goes to an AIRPORT BASE STATION (usb -older one)
From the ABS - I power 2 laptops (ibooks) - wirelessly
Also in the network is 2 Airport Express - 1 in an upstairrs office with itunes and printer and the other one downstairs in the entertainment center for itunes.
I do not get great range but it is workable upstairs and down.
If I remove the ABS and just use the 2 AE, will I get a bigger, stronger wireless network? I do get itunes drop out downstairs sometimes. Does the ABS do anything for me in this setup? I added the AE for itunes and printing but was told that it would be better to remove the ABS and just use these devices. The older ABS does not extend the netowork, correct?
If so, should i plug directly into the AE from the modem and then go to the router? What do I gain with the current setup vs plugging into the linksys router AFTER the AE?
Any advice would be helpful

You will find that not all 3rd party routers will allow you to extend the network and use WDS, as shown in th link.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107454
Basicly it is a confiquration issue after that, You don't need to use 2 routers like you have now.
Most users make the mistake and try to use a setup like you have and both routers are setup assign IP's, only the main can be confiqured this way.
This is one of the many reasons why it is a good idea to use all Airport Equipment to avoid incompatibility with 3rd party equipment. Some will mix and match some will not.
Hope this helps.

  • Networking with airport express and another router

I have an imac and a powermac G5 connected to the internet by ethernet cables going through a router, and i recently bought 2 powerbook G4s and an airport express. the laptops are connected to the internet via the airport express (which is connected to the main router with an ethernet cable), and i can access the internet on all of them. However, i cannot share music or files between all of them, only between the imac and powermac connected by ethernet. The laptops seem to be on different networks, and i cannot share files or music between them or with the imac and powermac. is there a solution to this?

Absolutely this solution will work - it has worked perfectly for everyone (including myself) that has done this. Likely what you didn't do last time (and which I pointed out you must do) is restart all your wireless computers after making this change on the Airport Express. This forces all wireless computers to renew their IP addresses, which must now come from the cabled router on your network.
Just to be sure you have explained your setup correctly - please tell me what make/model of router you are using.

  • Running a network with Time Capsule and Netgear router - is it possible?

We have an iMac and a Toshiba laptop. I was wondering if it was possible to have a wireless network with a Time Capsule and our Netgear DG834G router. We live in a solid brick house and the Netgear router is upstairs and we find we get very little, if any reception from downstairs. We have just purchased the Time Capsule and we were hoping to move the Netgear downstairs and have the Time Capsule upstairs to get reception all over the house. Is running a network like this possible, and if it is, how do we do it. Both the iMac and the laptop need to be able to connect. Thanks in advance.

    g'day
you could try a pair of those http://www.amazon.co.uk/Devolo-MicroLink-dLAN-Highspeed-Starter/dp/B000A7IE7Y

  • How do I hook up a G3 iBook to my home network with only Windows machines?

I'm completely ignorant of Apple technology but pretty good for a novice with Windows PC's. To help a family member with an iBook (Mac OS 10.3.9) back up a gazillion family photos (at least 3.2GB in the iPhoto Library), we want to connect his iBook to my home network with two Windows machines (one of which is connected via UBS to an external drive for backup). But before I just connect his iBook to an Ethernet port on my Westell modem+router, what should I know?
I need to know all the basics and all the steps, in as detailed a manner as you can stand to tell me.
And when it all looks good, what are the steps to copy the iPhoto Library to a designated spot on one of the Windows machines (or that external hard drive)?
By the way, this is the iBook:
    Machine Model: iBook
    CPU Type: PowerPC 750 (2.3)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 800 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 640 MB
    Bus Speed: 100 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.6.4f1
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.3.9 (7W98)
    Kernel Version: Darwin 7.9.0
    Many thanks!

    Hello,
When I got my first mac this ( http://macs.about.com/cs/tipstutorials/a/xposxsharing.htm ) article helped me enormously.
It's very easy to write to the disc once you've set up the network.
On the mac locate the iPhoto library (normally open finder and click on pictures).
Open another finder window and locate the windows PC on your network, then mount the folder to which you will back up the iPhoto library.
Drag the iPhoto library to this folder.
    Wait.
    Wait some more.
When the copy is complete check the images can be accessed from the PC.
Unmount the folder from the mac by dragging it to the trash.
    Congratulations.
Beware though, if you're like me you'll find this apple thing adicitve!!!

  • I'm trying to extend my wifi network with time capsule but it can't find the existing wifi network

I'm trying to extend my wifi network with time capsule but it can't find the existing BT wifi network even though it is there with a good signal strength. The Time Capsule is connected to a Netgear router via ethernet.

You will need to start over on the setup of the Time Capsule as follows:
Disconnect any Ethernet cables that might be connected to the Time Capsule, but leave it powered on
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule for 8-10 seconds and release. The reset button is located next to the AC power socket.
Allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Connect the Ethernet cable from a LAN <--> port on the Netgear to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.  The Ethernet cable must remain connected at all times.
Click the WiFi icon at the top of the Mac's screen
Look for a setting of New AirPort Base Station
    Click on Time Capsule
The example below shows an AirPort Express. You will see Time Capsule on your screen.
That will get the setup wizard going. It will take a minute to analyze the settings, then display a screen that looks like this, except you will see a picture of the Time Capsule
Network Name..........Type in the exact name that the Netgear wireless is using
Base Station.............Type in a name that you want to call the Time Capsule.  Use something short and simple. Mine is TC, for example
Password..................Type in the exact password that the Netgear wireless requires
    Verify.........................Verify the Password again
    Click Next
The setup wizard will configure everything for you automatically.  When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.
That's it.  Now you have one big "extended" network.  Technically, this is called a "roaming" network.

  • HT3819 Is it possible to share a printer (attached to a Windows-7 PC) on my home network, with an iPad, iPhone or a Mac?

Is it possible to share a printer (attached to a Windows-7 PC) on my home network, with an iPad, iPhone or a Mac?

Possibly. You'd need to see if your printer has any programs you can put on that attached computer to allow it to be a print server.
I'd start with your printer manufacturer first. See if they offer anything. for your model. If not, then you can look for any printer apps or programs.

Yes you can use home sharing with just a local network. Obviously you won't have access to all the other content.

  • How to access a harddrive on a home network with an iPad

How to access a hard drive on a home network with an iPad ?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Some drive manufacturers have produced apps for this purpose, if your drive manufacturer doesn't do this then you might look through the app store for third party solutions.

  • How to hook up a G3 iBook to a home network with only Windows machines?

Before I attach an iBook (Mac OS 10.3.9) to a home network with only Windows machines, what should I know? (I intend to connect the iBook to an Ethernet socket on my Westell modem+router.) My reason for doing this is to back up a million family photos in the iBook's iPhoto Library.
    This is the iBook:

    CPU Type: PowerPC 750 (2.3)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 800 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 640 MB

    Boot ROM Version: 4.6.4f1
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.3.9 (7W98)
    Kernel Version: Darwin 7.9.0
Please give me as much detail as you can stand to write, because I know nothing about Apples. It's for my dear old Dad, who has no other way to back up priceless photos.
For example, when things are working well and the iBook "sees" the Windows machines, how do I copy the iPhoto Library?
    Thanks!!

  • Simple Home networking with Mac OS X Server

    Hi all,
Can anybody give me a quick guide to setting up a basic home network with the use of Mac OS X Server for central administration?
I have 2 desktop macs, 1 mac laptop and 2 PC laptops and occasionally I have a number of friends bringing around their laptops.
I would like to set up all the basic services so that guests and registered users can access share points and home folders . I would also like to be able to use the DHCP service for this and be able to use basic services like DNS and AFP.
Does anybody know how to quickly set this up on a private home network?
I am new to Mac OS X Server so be gentle
    Thanks.

John Detroye works for Apple education in Colorado, USA. He has written what i consider the best practical guide to setting up a Server system for use in a School, which is essentially what you want to do. Although he wrote it initially for 10.3 Panther Server, almost all of it still applies.

    Then:
    Downloads - T & T etc. > Latest_Tips >Panther_Tips > mini-basic-0205a.pdf
a zipped 2.5 MB .pdf file is downloaded (about 25 pages) I strongly recommend you Print it out. I marked up my paper copy as I worked with it.

  • Reaching home network with laptop

    Good day everyone,
I had configured a VPN using my Laptop and it was working fine.
    Home Network:Domain AD: mylan.com (example)
    Router Cisco 837
LapTop: Win XP Pro SP2 called:richard (computer name) Domain:mylan.com
    IP address: automatic via DHCP
    All this was working fine...
Now, I am using my employer's LapTop,
LapTop: Win XP Pro SP2 called:employee123 (computer name) Domain: mywork.com
    IP address: automatic via DHCP
When I am on the road, I can access my employer's VPN using Cisco VPN client v.3.6.3 without problems.
I would like now to access my own network (mylan.com), access my shared drives, outlook inbox (exchange), IE, breifcase, etc.
I configured a new connexion using Cisco VPN client v.3.6.3 and my user ID and password, it looks like I am connected to my home router (mylan.com)...but I cannot see my shared drives, etc. because my employer's LapTop has a different Domain name (mywork.com)...
How can I fix this without renaming the machine to mylan.com ???
    Thanks in advance,
    Richard

    Hi Raj,
    Unfortunatly, it didn't chage anything.
More, I must have done something wrong, I cannot access my router anymore.
Using Telnet, when I type enable, it ask me my password, but it does not let me in anymore.
The onlything I remember doing that could cause this is: when I typed my password for the first time it worked, then I typed show run, it showed the show run, when I typed config, I saw a question asking me if I want (something like memory or terminal) and I typed "m".
Could it lead me to that ?? How can I reset my password without loosing anything ???
    Thanks,
    Richard

  • I have been trying for 24 hours to network two W 7 and a Vista Pre.

I have been trying for 24 hours to network two W 7 and a Vista Pre. The one W7 and the Vista can open anything the last W7 will NOT OPEN ANYTHING.
I get error code: 0x080070035 over and over and over.

Not sure if this will help or not.  I was trying to network W7 and XP a few weeks ago. I had been trying to name the network with my own name on both computers.  Nothing worked until I changed the network name to the default xp network name for both computers.  Then it all worked fine.

Try a reset: hold down the home button along with the power button until you see the Apple, then let go.

  • TS1398 I have an original iPad 32 why can't I connect on my home wi-fi but can connect anywhere else. No problems at home connect with other iPads and MACs.

I have an original iPad 32 why can't I connect on my home wi-fi but can connect anywhere else? No problems at home connect with other iPads and MACs.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button
