PROBLEM:
1) after creating a book, clicking on the "Buy Book" button does absolutely nothing.
2) after selecting a photo, I can't choose "order prints" from the "share" menu as it is grayed out.
I finally took my computer to a genius bar at an Apple Store. My problem is solved. Here is what happened:
The genius tried several things:
• running Disk Utility (verifying disk permissions & verifying the disk),
• making a guest account to see if same error still occurs (it did),
• checking for software updates, &
• having various internet browsers (i.e.: Safari rather than Firefox) set as the default.
None of these fixed the problem.
He also searched online for a remedy and discussed the problem with at least one other mac genius.
Next he used the Console utility and looked at some log (I am not certain on the specifics here). He said he could see some past mentions of iPhoto in it. He did not explain, but he seemed interested in what he found using Console.
He had booted from his own external hard drive to run Disk Utility. This external hard drive also happened to have the iPhoto software on it. So he ran iPhoto, using my computer but using the external hard drive for the start up disk, using the software from the external drive…. NO PROBLEM (i.e.: the “order print” button was NOT grey when he selected a photo; we did not go through the trouble of creating a book to try to order).
He found mention, on the Apple discussion board, that a genius had fixed said problem by replacing the iPhoto software (i.e.: reloading the software). I too recall reading this several months ago somewhere, but I can’t find it now.
So he renamed my application “iPhoto Old” and copied the iPhoto application from his external drive to my hard drive. Now my problems are solved. I deleted the “iPhoto old” application file. Both applications (the iPhoto I had on my computer & the iPhoto he had on his external drive) were ver 6.0.5.
I discussed with him about how to tell others (you) how to solve this problem. He said it is not simple to reload iPhoto because iLife does not let you re-install just iPhoto. Also, he mentioned something about fooling the computer into knowing what version you have and that Software Update would have problems. I wish I knew more. He made it sound like you should take it to a Genius Bar until Apple makes it possible to re-install just iPhoto software.
I hope this info is helpful to end-users and Mac Geniuses out there. I wish I had my problem fixed months ago so that I would have been able to order photo books for holiday gifts. ☹
