Trying to print through Linksys router

Hey there,
I'm trying to get a co-worker's Macbook to print through the Linksys router we have set up in the office, but it's proving to be more difficult than I imagined.
I've located the printer through System Preferences, and strangely enough she DOES have Internet access (browser, mail, etc), however printing doesn't want to work for some reason.
Has anyone had experience networking Macs with Linksys routers? And if so, how can we get the Macbook to print through it?
Any advice is very appreciated.

hey, i did have the same problem for a while, i had a linksys router setup through a print server. if your printing through a print server, make sure that it has a static IP address and then just put in the information in the printers folder.
if your not using a print server, try enabling windows sharing, printer sharing and personal file sharing in system preferences > sharing folder.

  • Finally able to print through Wireless Router!! (USR MaxG)

So, after a full week of trying to get my printer to print wirelessly, I finally got it to work... but only after I had begun to write this post on the Apple Forums. So, since I felt like this post was extremely clear in the process, I'm posting it, in case anyone else has the same problem. I hope this helps someone, since it was impossible for me to find a post that really offered a clear explanation for how to print wirelessly...
    Here's my post:
No matter what I do, I can't seem to print to my wireless router! Unless, that is, when I use my girlfriend's Windows computer. I'm able to print through the router to my printer via WinXP, but not OS X 1.4. Whenever I try to print in OS X, I get the error messages "Unable to find host..." or "Jobs Stopped."
    Here's my hardware:
    Router:
U.S. Robotics Wireless MAXg Router (USR5461)
    Firmware: 3.93.35.0.6 (Jan 5 2006)
    Printer status: Ready
    Printer location: http://192.168.2.1:1631/printers/My_Printer
    Printer:
    Samsung ML-2510
    Computer:
    MacBook Pro
    OS X 10.4
Here's what I've tried to do most recently:
    1) Applications> Utilities> Print Set Up Utility.
    2) Click "Add Printer" in Printer List
    3) Click "More Printers..." in print browser while holding down alt/option key
    4) Select "Advanced in Pull down menu
    5) Under Device, select Internet Printing Protocol using HTTP
    6) Under Device Name, insert "My_Printer" (listed above)
    7) Under Device URI, insert "http://192.168.2.1:1631/printers/My_Printer" (above)
    8) Under Printer Model, select "Samsung ML-2510 series"
    9) Click OK; make My_Printer default; and test print
    Results:
(Printer actually prints) AMAZING!! I finally was able to get it to print. Apple forums is magical
    Hopes this helps.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! I spent the past 3 hours trying to figure out why I couldn't get my mac to print on the wireless router. I found your posting about 2 hours into my quest, and it took me another hour to finally realize I needed to update the firmware on the router. I was using something from 2005, so when I installed the update, your directions worked! I never felt so happy to hear the printer! :-D
If you hadn't posted this, I would have never figured it out...thanks again!

  • Can't print through Linksys Print Server with PowerMac G5

Just wondering if anyone out there has been able to print using their PowerMac while spooling through a print server, specifically a Linksys PSUS4? I have a desktop and a laptop PC and a PowerMac g5 1.6Ghz and a MacBook Pro 2.0Ghz and only the HP laptop is able to print when my Epson R340 printer is routed through the print server.
I was using a Belkin switchbox to switch between USB hubs when printing with the desktop computers and this worked fine, other than having to remember to switch the connection when using a different computer.
Since then, I have added a Linksys wireless G router and a Linksys PSUS4 print server to allow the two laptops to print wirelessly. Now the only machine I can print from is the HP PC laptop. Neither desktop can print, nor my Macbook.
I am trying to use GIMP to print with my G5. When I send a jpb, it spools all the way through the job, but the printer never responds or prints a single sheet.
    Again, I am using a PowerMac G5, 1.6Ghz and MacOS 10.4.8.
Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated!

I've only been able to get it to work with my wife's HP laptop. So far, GIMP priting with the Mac is a no-go. It spools, but the printer just sits there.
As of now, I'm trying to print from my wife's desktop, which is an older model eMachines 1.1Ghz with XP Professional. Right now, it's just sitting there with a "Printing" window.
I have called Linksys, but to no avail. Couldn't understand they guy was speaking with. According to a networking friend of mine, there must be a PC host machine which is on all the time which acts as a "bridge" to get the files to the printserver. I don't know about that, but my father-in-law uses a PSUS4 to print wirelessly from 2 PC laptos with no problems.
Gonna try calling Linksys back and see if I get anywhere with that. If not, we'll try another route.
I'll post with what I find out.

  • Trying to Set Up Linksys Router

Hi, I have a Linksys router and used to have an IBM. I know have the PowerBook G4 and I am trying to set up the router in my house. The Linksys installed CD is not supported by Mac, nor their customer support. I need step-by-step instructions on how to set up the router in my home. Thank you.

I assume you are connecting to the internet through an ISP/DSL service. If so,
    1. Connect your router to the modem, and then your Mac to the router via ethernet. I am not sure what the set up would be for Airport as I do not have Airport on my G5. This should work for an ethernet connection.
    2. Open the Network preference pane Show Built in Ethernet. Then click on TCP/IP and configure for Using DHCP which basically sets your mac to automatically connect to the router/modem/internet.
    3. the click on the Ethernet choice and Configure Automatically.
Now use your browser and set the address to 192.168.1.1 which is the address of the web page in the router. Check your documentation for the default password, etc. When you get to the basic set up page, you will have to enter your basic Internet Connection Type, your online user name and password, which you should know from your service provider.
Once those are set you should be able to connect. Be aware though that depending on your service provider, some of these settings made need to be different. I am on Earthlink with a Linksys WRT54G router and these settings work for me.
Hope this gives you a steer in the right direction. And by the way, when setting up with my PC laptop, had lots of problems. When working only with my Mac, it was almost plug and play to connect via the router/modem!

  • Network Printing through Linksys PSUS4 works in leopard 10.5.1.

    Over here: http://forums.linksys.com/linksys/board/message?board.id=WiredPrintServers&message.id=578&jump=true#M578
At the linksys forum, user Tpaquette recently posted a gem that enabled me to get my macbook (running 10.5.1) to print to my HP 6110 all in one wirelessly over the network using the gutenprint drivers included with the OS. I thought I'd echo the post over here so that more folks could benefit from it, but perhaps if it works for you, you could go to the linksys thread and add a reply with your printer model to the growing list of those that this works with.
    Cheers,
    Ethan

I've spent far too many hours trying to get this to work for me not to share it with all of you frustrated Vista/OS X users out there. The instructions that I've laid out here is from my Canon MP830 printer install.
I believe the steps/process should work for any printer that you can find a CUPS driver for. I'm runing Vista Home Premium, Vista Ultimate and Mac OS X 10.4.10 just in case anyone wants to know what clients I have setup to access the PSUS4.
So here's is what you need to do to get a mixed environment configured for printing..
    1. Setup your Vista and XP clients using the setup wizard on the CD that came with the print server. Pretty straight forward, you should have no problems.
    2. To setup the Mac, you will need to setup a static IP address on the Print Server. To do this log onto your printserver from your browser. Under the Protocol, TCP/IP tab, input an IP address of your printserver, the subnet and gateway (see example)
I used the following IP Address
    IP Address ... 192.168.1.106
    Subnet Mask ... 255.255.255.0
    Gateway ...192.168.1.1
    Save your settings.
    3. Download the Gutenprint 5.1.3 drivers for OS X and install on your Mac running OSX.
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3
    4. Using the Printer Setup Utility in OS X, select the "Plus sign" to add a printer. Click on the IP Printer Icon to bring up the IP settings.
    5. Select LPD for your protocol, enter the IP address of the print server from above, name your queue "LP".
    6. Under Name, enter the name of the printer, under location, provide a location (optional) and under Print Using, select Canon and you will then see all the print drivers that you installed back in step 3. Select the Canon Pixma MP830-CUPS+Gutenprint v5.1.3 driver or any other Printer Manufacture/Model that you need.
    7. Once you complete step 6, you should have a new printer added to your list of printers and you should be able to print.
I've only tested this for my MP830 and I'm assuming that the process will work for other printers. If you try this and it works, let others know.
    Take care.

For Leopard users, instead of loading the CUSP driver as noted in the post, use the Gutenprint driver that comes with Leopard. Upon trying to print after upgrading to Leopard with the CUSP driver you will error. Quick change of the driver to the Gutenprint versio should do the charm.

  • Hi I'm trying to install an HP C4180 printer as net printer through Alicegate router (Thompson technicolor). Printer works ok when connected with USB to Macbook air, but cannot be seen on the printer installation configuration. Mac OSx 10.7 (Lion)

    Hi folks.
From this morning I'm trying to "see" an HP printer C4180 connected on the USB port of the wi-fi router (TIM Alicegate ADSL2 Wifi+N, manufacturer Technicolor).
I installed latest drivers and checked everything is ok and works fine until printer is connected directly with USB to my Macbook Air.
Then I connect the USB to the router and try to find the printer.
On Alice help suggest to find it by ging to system preferences, then printers, add printer with "+", select "windows" sheet. There I can see - not always in reality, but sometimes - the "workgroup" in the left column, select, "alicegate" in second column, select, and here instead of finding the printer list there is a pop up saying that "the server version you are trying to connect to is not supported".
Reading other forums, it may seem that the problem is Lion not yet supporting this kind of connection.
Here a photo of the situation when the message occurs:

  • How do I set up my hp laserjet printer through Cisco router?

I'm using my HP Laserjet 4000TN printer for my entire network.  I need to be able to use it with all my computers.  So I usually plug it into the modem via Cat5 cord and it grabs an IP address which I add in System Preferences and I'm good to go.  However, I recently had to change my network.  I now use a DSL modem as basically a dumb hub.  Which then goes into a Cisco 800 series router.  From there I need to be able to plug my computer into that router and then see it on both of my computers.  (What's the point of having a home network if you can't print from it from any computer on the network?)
I was told to assign it a static IP address of 192.168.7.5.  However, when I do this on my computer it doesn't seem to be going through to the printer.  Whenever I try to print a test page it does not work.
It is grabbing IP address 192.168.7.22.  However, when I enter this as the printer on the computer it is also not printing a test page.  Very frustrating.  I am unsure if this is the perfect forum for this as obviously it's the Cisco router that has changed and therefore it's not really a Mac issue.  But I am unsure where else to turn.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I found the solution.  I was using WEP encryption and I needed to be using WPA encryption.

  • My C5280 will print through my router but solution center won't go online and work

I have just hooked up my C5280 to a dlink dir-655 router via usb cable now I can get it to print fine just when I open the solution center to scan it says the printer is offline.  any ides how to fix this? I am using windows XP.
    RWE

After you connected this product via USB to your router, technically what the router will do from that point is forward the print jobs through wireless or Ethernet from your router to the printer over the attached USB cable. But, the connection is not direct. HP Solution Center will not see the printer as being online because it is looking for a direct USB connection, which is the only connection available for this particular printer.
    Hope this helps!

  • Connecting a new computer through linksys router

I have a WRT54G wireless router ... I want to connect a new laptop through it ... but I need either a network key or a password ... cant locate these .. can anyone help?

To get network key, connect your computer to one of the four ports on router using ethernet cable. Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name. Use your password if you have changed it earlier. Go to wireless tab. Go to wireless security sub-tab. If security mode is wpa or wpa2 note down passphrase/shared key, if security mode is WEP note down wep key number 1. This will be your network key

  • MacBook Running OSX 10.7.4 Can No Longer Find Printer on Linksys Router

I am SO tired of trying to work with this piece of (*$& printer it's RIDICULOUS.  Printing worked a couple days ago, but won't work today.
I have uninstalled the complete HP package and reinstalled it with drivers, nothing.
I have connected the printer to my MacBook with the USB cable and it finds the printer, but when it comes time to configure the wireless network and unplug the USB, it no longer finds the printer.
I went onto Apple's website and downloaded the HP print software and drivers, nothing.
I have attempted to add the printer using IP address, nothing.
I have turned off, turned on, unplugged, plugged in printer SEVERAL times, nothing.
I have tried to add the printer by way of IP address using Jetdirect, nothing.
SOMEONE TELL ME HOW TO GET THIS STUPID PRINTER TO BE SEEN BY MY COMPUTER OR I WILL BLAST HP ON EVERY MAC FORUM I POSSIBLY CAN.  I spent $150 on this printer 2+ years ago and could print, scan, fax just fine.  For about 6 months or a year I can no longer fax and the scanning is touch and go.  Printing since about 6 months after I bought the printer has been touch and go as well.  I don't enjoy spending $150 and then wasting HOURS of my time trying to figure out why the printer won't work with my computer.
Tell me what will work so I can make it work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have had EXACTLY the same frustrating experience with my MacBook OSX 10.7.4. Uninstall, reinstall, logoff, reboot, download new drivers, reinstall etc etc. Such a waste of time. My printer worked fine for 6 months, then suddenly it stopped.
Hopefully someone will have some idea of how to resolve this issue, other than to advise to uninstall/reinstall!

  • Printing through Linksys Wireless Print Server

    Ok.. Here is the question.
I have a Linksys Wireless Print Server (WPSM54G) which is connected to a Canon MX700. In windows this works great. However I cannot get OS X (10.5.2) to print to the printer.
The print server (with firmware update 1017) supports IPP, LPR, and some other printing protocols.
I have also pulled down the CUPS driver from Canon's site for the printer.
At this point I am stuck in getting this working.
Has anyone out there successfully gotten this wireless print server to work with OS X?
If so, what is the trick?
    Thanks.

I hope you're right about supporting the industry-standard protocols after a firmware update - because this print server didn't support those before...
With the industry-standard protocols IPP and LPD, a queue name is a part of the address to direct data to the port on the print server. Do you know the queue name (also called port name in some documents) for this print server, so you can enter it in print & fax prefs?

  • I have an Officejet 8500a Plus, but he can't find my Linksys Router

I just bought an Officejet 8500a Plus printer,
It can't find my Linksys router (WPA), all the other networks in this area are visible except our Linksys Router, with WPA security.
Tried to configure it with the software, connect the printer with USB, and tried to connect the linksys router, it say's: You're out of range of your wifi acces point(something like that)
    HELP?
    This question was solved.

    Here are a few tips:
    1. Make sure 802.11g is present.  Other wireless modes (like 802.11n) are OK, but g must be present.
    2. Broadcast your SSID and do not use MAC filtering.
    3. Make sure your router has the latest firmware.

  • Using linksys router

OK have just got first mac after many years with PC. Have PC lan going through Linksys router.
Have got latest firmware. updates to latest osx
using the ethernet cable life is fine
on wireless(and I have tried this with 3 routers) its sad. even hitting the router is slow(very slow) to bring up a page , yet the ping time seems reasonable.
I will probably just find an ethernet wireless bridge , but any ideas. I don't think this is specific to a router. using WPA security , DHCP.
    thanks

    ok i sorted this out
    got a buffalo access point
used the buffalo to connect over wireless to linksys
    ethernet into buffalo
still cant get airport on mac to talk direct to linksys

Cant seem to get around this.

  • How do i extend my wifi with a linksys router?

I have a network set up with a time machine extending to 2 separate airport expresses. I am trying to use a linksys router in place of one airport express in order to capture a stronger signal. I can't figure out how to get the linksys to communicate with the time machine without using an ethernet cable. Does anyone know how to do this?

Bob is being polite.. Apple people are like that.. !
I am more the typical nasty windows support person.
    Mate!!
    It will never work..
You haven't got a hope. Apple build their stuff to make sure your wretched Linksys cannot even see the Time Capsule.. (they make confusing names as well. Time Machine being software.. Time Capsule being the box you are talking about).
If you can flash your model Linksys to DD-WRT then you might get it working using universal repeater mode.. but even if it works the stability of it is so poor you will find 30min torture preferable.
You can plug the Linksys into the Express by ethernet.. and use the Linksys in wan bypass mode and extend wireless that way.. although the point of doing what the express is already doing is moot.
