Trying to purchase Mountain Lion without a functioning hard drive

Hello,
My hard drive recently failed. Like an idiot, I misplaced the OS Snow Leopard disk in a move. I'd like to replace the hard drive & subsequently upgrade to Mountain Lion. Is there any way to purchase Mountain Lion without being able to access the app store?
I have a copy of Leopard, so I was thinking I might install the old OS, purchase Mountain Lion, back up the new OS, wipe the drive & then install Mountain Lion. However, am I correct in assuming that it is not compatible with Mountain Lion?
I'd really rather not have to buy Snow Leopard (again) and then buy Mountain Lion in order to achieve my goal.
Thank you

At least the price is low, scant comfort I know.

Installing the appropriate combo update may help...
If you are running v10..7 Lion, install the OS X Lion Update 10.7.4 (Client Combo)
For 10.6 Snow Leopard >  Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
Then restart your Mac. Try the App Store.
If that doesn't help, try the following..
Quit the App Store if it's open.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar top of your screen click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
    Click Go
Move the NetworkInterfaces.plist file from the SystemConfiguration folder to the Trash.
Relaunch the App Store and try downloading Mountain Lion.
You may also need to disable anti virus software and turn off the Firewall in System Preferences > Security (or Security & Privacy) > Firewall

Can I purchase Mountain Lion and make a flash drive bootable? I do not want to install it on my Macbook Pro. I have Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro now, and due to my hard drive needing repair, I need to boot off of another source, like my flash drive. I am in Paris and my Snow Leopard DVD is in Texas.

Mac OS X has a built-in disk diagnostic and repair program called fsck or file system consistency check. Here’s how to verify and repair your startup disk with fsck.  As soon as you hear the startup tone, press and hold Command-S on the keyboard. Keep holding down those keys until you see a black screen with white lettering. This is called “booting into Single User Mode.”  As the Mac boots in this mode, the screen reports each step of the process. The line should end in root#.  Right after the root# prompt, enter the following: /sbin/fsck -fy
If repairing the disk in single user mode fails, it means one of two things. Either your hard drive itself is failing (a hardware failure), or the directory damage on your hard drive is beyond the capability of the built-in repair procedures in OS X.

  • How do i intall mountain lion on a new hard drive

    How do i do it?
I bought a new 13" MBP a few weeks back and have now got my SSD. I realise that Apple no longer give out OS install discs and i don't have mountain lion purchased on my app store as it came with my laptop. So how do i install mountain lion on my new hard drive without having to buy mountain lion.

Option 1  - Newer Mac's like your come with internet recovery. Which means if your drive fails or is corrupted or in your case your install a brand new drive, internet recovery will let you reinstall the OS you are eligible for. So replace your drive and boot your system with cmd + R keys pressed down for 15 secs or so and your machine hooked to the internet. This will install ML from apple in your case.
Option 2 - Clone or backup (your entire system using time machine) your hard drive to a external USB disk. Replace your drive and then restore the new drive from the clone or backup.

  • After installing Mountain Lion doesn't external hard drives mount or stay mounted. Anybody else with this major problem?

After installing Mountain Lion doesn't external hard drives mount or stay mounted.
I have tried resetting my Mac's PRAM but the problem still remains.
Even USB memory sticks are unmounted efter a few seconds.
Anybody else with this major problem?

I have the same problem, although mine has not been solved by ESET update, finder settings, PRAM & SMC resets or anything else.
Don't get it, my external hard drive still works on both my housemates computers - one macbook pro (with snow leopard) and one dell, just not on mine with mountain lion.
    Any ideas for me guys?

  • Installing Mountain Lion onto an external hard Drive

    Hi
I am running snow Leoprd and what to keep this as my main OS on my internal HD due to work, I want to install Mountain Lion onto an external Hard Drive and boot and run from an external HD as opposed to my internal
I will be likely to be using a thunderbolt connection for the external HD
Has anyone had any experience with this and any tip or faults?
I will be using Logic mainly]

Works just like installing on an internal drive. Just be sure to choose the correct target before clicking on the Install button.
If you have sufficient space on your internal hard drive you could also make a partition on it in which to install Mountain Lion. This will be faster and more convenient that an external drive.

  • App Store keeps Crashing when trying to purchase Mountain Lion.

Help! I've tried everything. I am using a Mac OS X 10.6.8. I am trying to buy Mountain Lion off the app store to update my OS so I can purchase Pages but everytime I open the app store and click buy the color wheel starts spinning and the app store won't respond.I have to force quit everytime. I tried to purchase some free apps to see if they would work and I'm getting the exact same problem. I've researched several solutions and have had no luck. I called apple and they said it could be because everyone was updating their iphone so try at non peak hours I did that and still no luck. I don't think thats the problem anyway. Any solutions?

You could also try enabling the debug menu for the App Store, using the terminal command below:
In there it gives you the option to delete cookies and reset the app... This might help you.
Nobody knows for sure what these options do, but it has never caused me any problems. However, be very careful not to click around too much, it may damage your machine.
    Quit App Store.app
    Open Terminal
Type "defaults write com.apple.appstore ShowDebugMenu -bool true" (without the quotations)
    Hit ENTER
    Relaunch App Store.app
Locate Menu and select the appropriate topic
    Close & relaunch App Store.
Fingers crossed it will work for you.

  • Purchase mountain lion without mac

I can't re install mountain lion without purchasing. I need to purchase it without my MAC.

You said re install, which means you must have already purchased it. You don't need to pay for it again. Login from any Mac you own and login to the App Store with the same ID you used to purchase any software. List your purchased software and Mountain Lion will have a Download button next to it. You will not be charged again.

  • I am trying to re-install mountain lion on a new hard drive on a mac pro but get a backward slash with a circle

I am trying to reinstall mountain lion in a mac pro with a new ssd drive but will not let me. It gives me a back slash with a circle. I have 2 optical drives, first is a blu-ray and the second is a super drive. could that be the cause?

Firstly, you need to partition and format the SSD. You need to be able to boot the computer from another drive that has a bootable OS X system installed or a Snow Leopard DVD installer that works on the computer.
    Install Lion/Mountain Lion on a New HDD/SDD
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • No Mountain Lion and ? Bad Hard Drive ???

Tried to install Mountain Lion and the program stated the computer has a defective hard drive. It was working fine prior to the failed install of Mountain Lion. Now I'm dead in the water. ???

You should be able to restart while holding "command" and "R" until you see the Apple logo.  Then you can use the recovery disk to:
    1.  Run disk utility and find and repair bad spots.
    2.  Reinstall the operating system.

  • Can I install Mountain Lion on a different hard drive when it's already installed on one hard drive?

I have a Mac Pro with two 2TB hard drives installed, one I use for storage, and one as my startup disk (also store things on there as well). I just installed two new 2TB drives and have set up a RAID 0 with them. I want to use the RAID drive as my start up disk, but I'm not sure if I can install Mountain Lion on the new RAID drive while it is still on the original start up drive. I also don't want to lose or erase any information from my current start up drive. Can anyone offer me guidance??

Firstly, you need to partition and format the SSD. You need to be able to boot the computer from another drive that has a bootable OS X system installed or a Snow Leopard DVD installer that works on the computer.

  • HT202159 "An error has occurred" in red trying downloading OSX Mountain lion without any option in grey Button

I Purchased the update for Mac OSX Moutain Lion from Mac App Store. After several attempts to resume downloads. an message appeared as follow in red "An error has occured" The grey button next to it has no text in it and also does not respond when clicking on it. How can I restart or continue this download. U did try logging out and in again as well as restarting without any success. PLEASE HELP

Make sure your Mac qualifies to run Mountain Lion >  Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mountain Lion.
Disable anti virus software and turn off the Firewall in System Preferences > Security & Privacy.
Then try here >  Mac App Store: How to resume interrupted downloads
If that doesn't help, click Store from the App Store menu bar top of your screen. From the drop down menu click Check for Unfinished Downloads.
Keep in mind, for downloading Mountain Lion from the App Store, a high speed (broadband) internet connection is strongly recommended by Apple as noted here > iTUNES STORE - MAC APP STORE - TERMS AND CONDITIONS
If you need to reinstall OS X or repair the the startup disk using Mountain Lion Recovery, that requires broadband access to the internet via Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection. OS X is downloaded over the internet form Apple when OS X Recovery is used for reinstallation.
