Trying to put music on my phone

I currently have over 1300 songs in my itunes library. I recently had to go under usage settings on my iphone 5 to delete all of my music so i could have enough storage for other things needed. Now when I connect my iphone to itunes and drag the selected 100 and something songs to my ipone it starts putting all of my 1300+ library on my phone. How can I just put the certain songs I want on my phone? Thanks!!

First quit iTunes and look in your iTunes folder.
On Windows, the iTunes folder is in your My Music folder.
On Mac, the iTunes folder is in your Music folder.
Follow this path: iTunes > iTunes Media > Music >
Here there should be all your music folders. Open the folders containing the music that is not playing. Right click "get info" (mac) or right click "properties" (windows).
This window will tell you the file type. iTunes will play music in AAC, MP3, and Lossless, etc.
If the files are .wma you will need to convert them into ACC or MP3 format for it to play on an iPod. In iTunes, highlight the tracks that you want to convert, then on the menu bar, Advanced > Create AAC/MP3 version and the tracks will convert. Delete the old files.
If the file extenstion is anything like .exe .txt .rar then you don't have an audio file.

Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Features app in the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components
- New cable and different USB port
- Run this and see if the results help with determine the cause

Go back to iTunes, select the Music tab, uncheck the 'sync music; button, then hit apply.

Correct. When you purchase devices, they would have stated the OS they needed to work, on the box. This can be overlooked, but it is very important to check when purchasing.
You current OS, is so old, that they technology build into the new devices, is not something your OS understands. It didn't exist when your OS was created, and therefore you need to upgrade the OS to work with the newer technology of these devices.

Be sure both the iPhone and iTunes are in fact yours.
They should both be using the same Apple ID and password, and be transferring music that belongs to you (belongs to that Apple ID, and not synced to some other computer).

First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPod. What you did was sync it to a computer. The iPhone can sync to ONLY one iTunes library at a time. you can't put media on it from multiple computers. It's been this way since 6/29/2007.

Do you have Sidebar ON?
iTunes > View > Show Sidebar.
Connect and select iPhone in iTunes Sidebar under DEVICES, choose the Music tab on the right, select Sync Music and whatever music you the on iPhone. Click Apply (bottom right)
