Trying to re install mountain lion but recovery hd is locked and deleted macintosh hd :(

Hi all :)
I wanted to re install lion OS X but got it all wrong and in a muddle !
I restarted OS X got to utilities, the disk utility and went to delete 500.11 gb but would not allow and could not unmount! Thought I would go to re install OS X but says that recovery hd is locked! Now me thinking of a work around went back to disk utility and deleted the next branch down which was macintosh hd. But recovery hd is still locked when tryin to re install OS X and now I can't even get back past utilities now when booting up :(
I have no back up either and my mac is useless to me :(
I even tried system restore but gives me nothing
Any help would be appreciated :)
Thanks

Since you deleted the OS X files, and your Recovery HD is locked, AND you do NOT have a backup on an external hard drive, your options are very limited.  You did not say which model year and version of Mac you have, nor did you say which version of OS X came new on your Mac.  IF your Mac came with an older version of OS X on it, then your Mac also came with a set of Installation Disks.  If so, insert the Installation Disk 1 and boot up while holding down the "C" key to boot from that disk.  You will then be able to reformat your hard drive and install that older version of OS X that came with your Mac.  Then "Update" that version completely online, and then you can eventually "Upgrade" the version of OS X back to Lion.

    so, i have a problem.
When i tried to restart my Mac earlier today, I got the gray screen. Now i'm trying to reinstall my mountain lion, but when the install guide tells me to choose a disk to reinstall on, it says that my disk is locked.
    please help, urgent!
    thanks.

No, you'll lose your data. Do you have a backup? If you don't use Time Machine, here are some cloning programs you can use to make a backup. Two backups are better than one.

    Clone – Data Backup

I have tried to install mountain lion but it has failed to install

If you open Finder and open your Applications folder list, under the alphabetically listed "I"'s you should see an application called "Install OS X Mountain Lion.app", if it downloaded OK.  This is the package that you double click on to begin installation of Mountain Lion.  Have you already done this?
    Hope this helps

    Hi Fred,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

You are not specific with your problem or errors but one thing that always throws people off is as follows:

trying to down load mountain lion but will only get to 53.25mb

    See if this applies:
Apple has tightened its requirements for this OS upgrade, and some older Macs— even ones that qualified for Lion — won't make the cut for Mountain Lion.
The general system requirements are straightforward:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
Apple also lists which models WILL support Mountain Lion:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

  • Cannot install Mountain Lion - my iPhoto won't quit and Mountain Lion won't let me do a force quit

I'm trying to upgrade to Mountain Lion but when it ries to quit all programmes to install my iPhoto won't quit as albums are being sync'd.  I try to stop and quit but it won't.  I then try to force a quit and Mountain Lion won't let it.  help!

if you don't mind interrupting the album sync, you can do a hard shutdown of the mac by pressing and holding the power button down for 10 seconds to make sure it's all the way off.
you can then do SMC reset which is described in the following article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
after doing this turn on the mac, click on the black apple then force quit and make sure all apps are closed
open app store and try again to install the mountain lion

  • I erased my HD. Now I can't instal mountain lion from my bootable flash drive, and keep getting "installation error. Try again."

I bought  mountain lion, made a bootable flash drive.
I booted from it and it went to upgrading right away!
So I stopped it and went to my former recovery partition I erased my HD because I wanted a clean start.
Now I can't instal mountain lion from the bootable flash drive, and keep getting "installation error. Try again."
and there is no 4 choices window.
I don't know what to do.

How did you create the USB install thumb drive? If it was with Disk Utility I have run into this problem and have since used THIS program to make the USB install drive.
As to your problem you only have one option and that is to Reinstall the Original OS X version that came on your computer or if you still have the Lion Recovery Partition use that to reinstall Lion. Or if you system came with Lion and you have No Lion Recovery HD Partition you can boot the system from over the internet and Reinstall Lion.
At startup hold down the Command+Option+r keys until you saa a spinning Globe in the center of the screen. Once that loads Repartition the drive as One partition and then reinstall Lion.

  • Just clean installed Mountain Lion but MBP running extremely, extremely slow

Four days ago I opened up my MBP to find it running at a snail's pace. The change had happened overnight. Five days ago it was blazing fast, the next day every application took 20 minutes to start up, the rainbow circle would appear every time I would do the simplest of tasks; it was a nightmare.
First, I thought there was some sort of malware infecting my system, so I scanned the computer with Sophos, iAntivirus and ClamXav. This process took the better part of a day because everything was so slow. The results were all clear. Next, I decided to repair permissions, empty the cache, and use CCleaner. No improvement.
Then, I felt there was a problem with the OS I was running; Lion. So I decided to get Mountain Lion. I took the install DMG file and used Lion Diskmaker to create a USB install disk. I then booted with 'Option', erased Macintosh HD, and installed Mountain Lion. Installation was without any problems, except for the fact that it was quite slow and the Welcome steps also took a very long time to complete, with the rainbow circle constantly appearing.
This now leads me to believe that there might be some sort of hardware issue. If this is so, or if you suspect any other sort of issue, how would I go about identifying and fixing it? Please help, because even typing this problem out has taken me a long time due to the MBP constantly getting stuck and slow-ey.
P.S. I've also noticed that the longer I keep an application running, the smoother it seems to run, but the difference is very small.
