Trying to re-install os system from cd

My macbook recently crashed and I am trying to reinstall the os system from the cd - the computor re-starts and then i'm asked to select a destination volume and none is offered. When the computor crashed a folder appeared with a flashing "?" so i'm assuming it can't find the hard drive.
can anyone out there help?
thanks Mark

Put your OS X disk in the CD/DVD drive and reboot holding the C key down. This tells the system to boot from the OS X CD. Then, on the menu bar under utilities, bring up disk utitlity. Then either repair the hard drive, or erase it, if you want to start with a clean disk for the install.
Also, look this Apple repair program over to ensure it doesn't apply to you: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook/hd/repairextension/

  • Problems installing operating system from restore disks

    Greetings all,
I recently had to change out the motherboard on my TECRA A11-S3540 due to a spill on the keyboard.  The laptop worked OK afterwards for a week or so.  It started hanging on bootup and continually got worse until it would only boot up in safe mode and then hang up at mup.sys.
I assumed the replacement motherboard was bad so bought and installed yet another one.  Afterwards, I had the same problems as with the 1st replacement motherboard.  I then turned my attention to the hard drive.
I removed the hard drive from the Tecra and then attached it via a SATA-USB converter to another PC so that I could run chkdisk on it.  There were not errors reported.  I then reformatted and repartitioned the drive and reinstalled it.
Now when I try to install the operating system (windows 7) with my restore disks, it seems to load information into the RAM, but hangs forever with the windows logo on the screen and the text "starting windows".
The motherboard has the latest bios, and indentifies the hard drive correctly.  I am at a total loss and really need help on this...

    Tecra A11-S3540
when I try .. with my restore disks, it .. hangs forever
We've seen occasional problems restoring to a drive with advanced-format technology.
    Check into that.

  • Installing a system from the App Store

Forgive me if I have missed this topic somewhere else in the discussions. But, I was wondering if anyone is uncomfortable with the future of doing all OS X updates in the App Store? I've always downloaded the combo updaters from Apple's website and installed from my hard drive. When I installed Lion I downloaded it from the App Store and then burned it onto a bootable DVD and installed Lion after booting off the DVD. And even before that I check the hard drive with disc utility and repair permissions before and after installation. Also shut down my mac and unplug all peripherals and then start back up. I've never seen apple suggest these things. So I wonder is Apple just a little too confident in OS X? Is OS X even more reliable than ever? Or am I just superstitious with the Mac voodoo?
    Digi

I mean that the actions you take before and after system updates are pointless, and that's why Apple doesn't recommend them.
The Installer itself automatically checks the directory of the startup volume, so there's no need for you to do it yourself.
Repairing permissions, although immensely popular, is a complete waste of time unless you have an indication of a permission error involving system files, which you probably never will. Repairing permissions before and after an Apple update is 100% certain to be a waste of time in any circumstances.
Your idea of shutting down and unplugging peripherals is one I hadn't heard of before.
Don't invent busywork for yourself like a Windows user. Use your computer to be creative, to communicate, and to have fun. When you need to update your software, just do it and move on. Don't make a fetish out of it.

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. • [Help] Move ECC system from one server to another - Considerations

    Hi Guys
We currently have two SAP ECC 5.0 Instances over DB2 9.7/AIX 6.1 on a same server (WS01), and now we are splitting this, by leaving Development box on WS01 and moving QA to WS08
What would you think/recommend the best approach to fulfill this requirement
Im taking in mind such things like, transport system, RFC connections, Database and SAP Profiles
What steps would you think are mandatory to have QA system fully working on a brand new server
Is an option to install an system from scratch on that new server (WS08), and they restore the actual database and perform the post processing steps just like a refresh, and then adding that system to the actual ECC landscape
    Best Regards
    Martin

This process is called "system copy".
    > Is an option to install an system from scratch on that new server (WS08), and they restore the actual database and perform the post processing steps just like a refresh, and then adding that system to the actual ECC landscape
It's an option but not necessary to first install a full featured system and then "overwrite" the database.
You can install a new system using the database backup of the original system.

Thanks Paul; but, taking your suggestion didn't solve the problem.  As mail is part of the OS, the updates don't have the capacity to reinstall applications; so, I had to reinstall the OS.  I now have my mail back (although it didn't appear on the dock--I had to go to applications and activate it and then put it back in the dock.  Thanks again for trying.

  • Bluescreen when trying a clean install from CD - X61

    Hey,
I got a question from a neighbour if I could help him reinstall his laptop. It's a X61.
He got it from his employer when they decided to buy a bunch of new laptops for the company. Therefore he has no backup discs, no system reset software or anything. It's just the laptop and the power supply. He used the laptop 'as is' for a while but now it needs cleaning. He asked the IT department on his job but they didnt save any discs or software for the laptops. There is a Restore and Resque partition on the HDD which is accessible via the Thinkvantage button at boot, but no software in that console is working.
So he went out and bought a Windows XP license to make a clean install on the PC but we are having difficulties to make it run...
I tried to format an USB stick to install Windows XP from. After boot I only get a blank screen with a flashing marker...
I tried an external DVD-drive since the PC doesnt have any and I get the installations program to run. It starts to load the files but after a short while I get a bluescreen...
I'm running out of options here, any suggestions?

    echX, welcome to the forum,
a solution that works for a lot of people is to set the SATA to compatability mode in BIOS; press F1 at boot > Config > SATA.  After XP has been installed you can install the necessary driver and switch it back to AHCI.

  • Trying to Erase and Reinstall Yosemite from install drive

I am trying to prepare my 2009 Mac Pro for selling. I erased the startup disk from disk utility, and now I'm trying to reinstall Yosemite using an install file on an external hard drive. Every time I boot to the external hard drive, choose "Install OS X" from the utilities menu, and then wait for the "Preparing to install" screen. After preparing to install, however, I get the error message:
"An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again."
I had a working Yosemite install on this machine before erasing the disk, so I know it can handle it. The external hard drive is a LaCie Rugged connected via Firewire 800 (I also tried via USB). My Mac Pro also has two additional 1TB drives in bays 2 and 3 (both erased and empty).
    MY SYSTEM
    Early 2009 Mac Pro
    2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    16GB RAM
    ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB

UPDATE: I just reset the NVRAM, and that seems to have solved the problem.

  • Restore from Time Machine backup doesn't install working system folder

A routine restart turned into a major problem this morning. I'm runnning 10.8.5. on a MacPro tower and a 480GB SSD for a boot disc. Been running fine for the past 2 years.
I restarted the machine and when I came back to it I was dropped into the Recovery / OSX Utilities screen. This was unexepected!
Tired restarting again, and it gave me the circle+line through icon ( / ) a couple of times and then the apple as it apparently located the Recovery partition.
Running Disk Utiliites "Repair" and "Repair Permisions" on the SSD came back with flying colors, so I assume it's not a hardware issue. That said, multiple reboots and nothing. I was basically dead in the water. I only have a boot USD stick, which just launches you into recovery mode.
Knowing that I was going to be out for a few hours and that I have regular Time Machine backups of my drive, I opted to perform a System Restore on the main SSD, using a backup from earlier this morning.
After 4+ hrs of "restoring", I optomistically rebooted the machine. It's still gave me the "system folder not found" icon, and booted into Recovery mode.
This time I quit the application and specifcially went to select the SSD as a Startup Disk and it's not even showing a 10.8.5 folder on the SSD!!
I just booted up my Mac Pro in target disk mode and plugged it into my MacBook Pro to examine the drives. I can see all 4 drives on my MacPro, including the boot SSD. My boot disk appears to contain all the files it had before, but won't boot! I can verify that the backups are the exact folder structure that I had before, so what's going on?
    Should I:
Wipe the SSD again, and install OS X from my laptop? Can I do that through Target Disk mode? Or just do that through the Recover Tool?
Some people with similar issues were told to perform clean installs and use migration assistant to pull the files over. But I really would like to know why using Time Machine backups aren't doing what they are supposed to – the files are all there!
Is there something I can do to my restored SS
Obviously this is a desperate time for me, so any assistance is greatly appreciated.

So far, the closest to a solution has been that I've since reformatted the drive. Installed a fresh copy of 10.8, and now I'm trying to migrate over all my content from the Time Machine backup using the Migration Assistant. In an hour I'll find out if I just wasted the last 2 hrs.
I guess I have a "Quad Core", I have two many machines to keep all the specs straight. I've been using it for over two years. It's not an OS issue.
I'm still blowaway by the fact that I could actually just restore from a Time Machine backup. When connecting to the TM via the system utils, it should be handled like a byte-for-byte clone. I think that's a rather major failure on Apple's part, but not the last one of late.
I still am not confident enough in Mavericks to take that plunge.

  • Installing Windows XP from USB - no system installed already

    Hi all,
I am a newbie here, so please bear with me. I recently purchased a Lenovo x121e ThinkPad. It did NOT come with an operating system on it. I thought it would be a pretty simple job to install Windows XP from a USB Flash Drive. Apparently not!
Would anyone be able to give me instructions on how to prepare the bootable USB drive and then the steps that should be taken after that.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Wiped our old iPad 1 clean, now can't install iOS from iTunes using laptop PC (W Vista).  iTunes does not "see" the device.  Tried uninstalling and installing iTunes on laptop.  Also bought new USB cable.  The iPad is charging, but that's all it does.  Just want to get it operating again for browsing and e-reading.

OK.  You merely erased the content and settings.  The IOS is still there.
If it has NEVER been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures.  From what you've already stated, my guess is that you'll end up with Recovery Mode described in the last paragraph.
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.
