Trying to re-install OSX on mac Mini with broken DVD drive.

I have a mac mini G4 and the DVD drive died a long time ago and i have been using a external USB DVD when necessary. Last week the machine was taking along time to boot so I got hold of a FireWire 400 cable and connected it to my Intel iMac and tried to repair it in target disk mode. Disk Utilities was unable to repair the drive so I had to erase it and re-format which was completed successfully. Now I have the problem that I cannot get OS X Leopard or Tiger back on the mac mini from the install DVDs. I cannot get the mac mini to recognize the USB drive or the iMac as a bootable drive. (N.B. the DVD drive has also died on the Intel iMac). When booting the mac mini whilst hold the alt key, the correct screen loads but nothing appears but for the reload key and the continue key.
Any help would be grateful as I want to keep the mac mini running for my daughter to use.

First off, you can't use an Intel Mac to boot a PowerPC Mac.
Secondly, 10.6 won't work on G4s.
Third, machines older than 4 years, may need a PRAM battery replaced for their optical drive to work again.
If the PRAM battery is not the problem, then you may need to find a safe cleaner for the drive.
USB DVD drives won't boot G4s either.  Only Firewire will.  See http://www.macsales.com/ for some drives that may help you.

  • Install snow leopard on mac mini with broken DVD Drive

I want to upgrade the OS on my mac mini but the hard drive keeps kicking out the disk - I read that I "might" be able to fix this by using a DVD cleaner but I am not overly optimistic about this fix. I have an external USB drive and a Windows PC to work with so I am wondering if I can use the DVD drive of the PC to copy the install disks to the external drive and then perform the instal from the external drive. I have been reading posts and can find advice on how to copy the Leopard install discs using another Mac or by using the remote disk feature - but since I don't have another Mac, these are not currently options.
    Thanks

    1. Clean your drive and reset the > PRAM, then try upgrading with the Mac Mini's drive.
    2. Try out that external USB DVD drive, some will work if they are not OS X compatible.
    3. Your PC might work, see > DVD or CD sharing: Using Remote Disc

you should be able to boot off a usb thumb drive. there are lots of resources on the web for doing this. i've also found a thread to enable you to decide which device to boot from, including the USB drive by holding down option while starting up...

  • Mac Mini Server w/DVD drive?

I'm considering adding a Mac mini with Snow Leopard server to my home setup, and I have several questions about the mini, since it looks like I might have to do something custom to get the setup I want...
    1. Is it possible to change the OS installed by Apple when ordering? They don't offer the Mac Mini with Super Multi drive with an OSX server option, and I'm a little wary of having a server I have to use an external drive for to install from DVD or rip music or movies.
    2. How large a single HD will the Mac mini support? If I'd only have one HD, I want to make it a big one...

    1. I don't think it's possible to order it that way. You'd have to order the regualar mini and buy OSx Server separately. I recommend getting the server hardware. The faster processor, more memory and an additional 500G disk makes it most cost effective. I have the $99 external superdrive and use it on my MBair as well as the mini. I bought it 2 years ago with the MBair and it works just fine. No failures on either machine. Also, if it did fail, it's $99 to replace and just plug it in.
    2. The largest drive Apple supplies is 500G for the mini. There might be something larger by 3rd party vendors but with 1T in my machine, I didn't need to go there.
    Hope this helps...

  • HT5446 If I buy a mac mini with a fusion drive and add windows using boot camp, can I make the SSD function be dedicated to the windows partition?

If I buy a mac mini with a fusion drive and add windows using boot camp, can I make the SSD function be dedicated to the windows partition?

Additional information from Linc's post. Basically, only one additional partition can be added to a Fusion Drive and it resides on the HDD.
Do computers that come with a Fusion Drive support Boot Camp?
Yes. Use the Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows partition and install Boot Camp. The Windows partition will exist on the hard disk drive, not the Flash drive, and is not part of Fusion Drive Logical Volume Group. 3TB Fusion Drive configurations need to update to OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.3 or later to install Windows 8. See iMac (27-inch, Late 2012): Boot Camp alert with 3T hard drive for more information.

  • How to buy and install mac os x 10.6 in a late 2007 mac book with no dvd drive?

i want to buy snow leopard for mac book with no dvd drive, but the only choice in app store is dvd copy, no digital copy!

You'd have to have someone with a DVD drive make a Disk Image of the DVD, have them Restore that .dmg to a Flash drive that's big enough, the boot the MB using alt key to choose to boot from the USB Flash drive.

  • After Yosemite, numerous problems on Mac Mini with Custom Fusion Drive

I have installed OS X Yosemite on a Mac Mini with a "homemade" fusion drive.  The update seems to have completed, although the following problems are evident:
Missing menu items from the menu bar, including the apple menu, notifications, time machine and others
Menu bar items return after booting non-apple software (MS Office, for instance), but disappear again once apple apps are running (App Store).  You can mouse over these menus, even though their respective icons are not there, and access the content within the menus.
iTunes crashes upon launch; app store launches, but no content loads.  Additionally, the app store menu item under the missing apple menu location, shows 4 software updates are available, but cannot load the app store content in order to access the updates.
Safari loads, but enters a continuous loop of "A problem occurred with this webpage so it was reloaded."  Then, a application quit notification window appears, stating "Safari Web Content quit unexpectedly."
Lots of spinning beachball now that was not happening prior to update.
I've tried resetting the machine numerous times.  Nothing seems to fix the problem(s)
The machine seems to recognize the fusion drive in system report, and all files are accessible in finder, so I don't think the fusion drive is the issue.
    Any suggestions, pointers, fixes?

  • New mac mini and noisy dvd drive

Any time I have a DVD in my brand new mac mini, from commercial DVDs to trying to author a blank DVD, I get the dreaded chainsaw sound that plagues anyone who has owned an xbox 360. Has anyone else suffered with this with their new mac mini or should I send it back to apple

I should have been a little more specific. This happens usually when I try and do slightly disc intensive tasks, such as burn a disc, import a disc to itunes, and I can even get it to sound when I leave a disc in the drive, turn the computer off, and as it's booting it will make the grinding noise. I first thought that the computer couldn't lay on it's side as that's when I first noticed it (sort of like the wii on it's side because this fits my setup), but it makes the same noise whether I have it on it's side or not. This is also not disc specific, I can re-create the noise with different discs, DVDs, CDs when importing to itunes. Guess I'll be taking it to an iTunes store to get it checked out.

  • Upgrading mac mini from tiger to leopard with broken DVD drive (long)

    bonjour.
I have a macmini (1.42PPC) with a broken DVD drive running tiger on which i would like to install leopard (from scratch). I have a retail DVD of leopard, and a macbook. Other equipment includes a PSP and an 8Gb memory stick duo, usb cables, a 40Gb ipod with firewire cable. Wireless keyboard and mouse.
I've created a bootable image of my leopard DVD onto the 8Gb memory stick in the PSP using the macbook. I can plug the PSP into the macbook and the memory stick mounts as the leopard install DVD. I run InstallOSX and i'm prompted to reboot. Upon rebooting, my macbook boots from the memory stick in the PSP attached via USB and the language option menu of the install process appears. So far so good. I shutdown the macbook.
I then take my bootable image of my leopard DVD and plug it into the macmini. It automounts, i run InstallOSX and i'm prompted to reboot and the macmini restarts.
Unfortunately, the macmini reboots from it's internal HDD, and not the memory stick attached via USB so the installation fails.
Is there a way i can force the macmini to boot or reboot from the USB drive? I only have a wireless keyboard. Does the macmini in fact support booting from a USB device at all?
I don't know much about the firmware shipped with the macmini, and can not access it during startup to take a look as i have a wireless keyboard. Can i access the firmware from the booted macmini to change the boot device, like i can with a Sun Solaris box (eeprom)
Could there be another solution that wouldn't involve playing with the firmware?
I don't have the option of buying additional equipement.
Any thoughts on this problem would be welcome.
    best wishes
    jack
ps. I added (long) to topic subject, not to phish, but to save others' time, as it's quite a long and boring post

thanks for your advice, however this is all but impossible as i have a wireless keyboard which doesn't permit me boot into anything but the OS, as the keyboard and bluetooth drivers don't load early enough in the boot process.
however, i did find a firewire cable, so this is what i did:
booted the macmini in target mode and added a 10Gb partition to it from the macbook, onto which i restored the leopard DVD image
booted the mac mini normally, and it mounted my new partition. I just ran the install from there et voila

  • How to install OSX on mac mini G4 when no OS is present?

hello, I am very new to all of this. Here is some back ground, I just picked up an older mac mini not sure what modle or anything I just know its older i think 2005 or 2006. I pluged it in to my tv and turned it on and all that came up was a folder with a question mark in it and it changed to another image I dont remember what it was, the IT people at best buy said that it doesnt have an OS, they also said I could put one on a usb flash drive and boot it from there. My question is, if that is possable or if I need to get the disk from apple? and my only other computer is running on windows 7. I have an 8GB flash drive if the OSX will fit on that. I also read somewere that I need to do something to the usb drive to make it so the mac mini will boot off the usb drive. I can provide the last three ( it is an 11 diget S/N) they are "RHT". If that helps.
Thank you so much and I am awating any help I can get.
(sorry is stuff is miss spelled)

start up the computer with the Option key held down
Neil, are you sure? My memory is the Option key boot was not available in 10.4. We had to hold the C key down to boot from an OS cd. That was a long time ago, your memory is probably better than mine. But I had to ask.

  • Help with installing OSX Lion on iMac with broken display

    Hi,
Having some trouble installing OSX Lion on my 5 year old iMac which has a broken display.
The display has been dead for a couple of years now and I've been using an external monitor without any problems. Today I decided to upgrade to Lion - I downloaded the installer from the App Store and started the install which rebooted the machine. After reboot I'm presented with a grey 'thatched' background image on the external display and nothing else, no menu bar, installation menu etc.
I presume the internal display is showing the menu I need but I can't see it as that screen is broken. Is there a way to turn on mirroring during the install process so I can use my external display? I've tried various shortcuts held down during startup - OPTION-F14, CMD-F1, CMD-F2 - but none have worked.
If this isn't possible, is there a way to abort the Lion install process and go back to using my Snow Leopard install? Whenever I boot the machine I am taken to the OS X Lion installer and don't know how to get back to my Snow Leopard install. I tried holding down OPTION key on startup to choose the list of available OS installs, but again, the internal display is being used so I can't see what to do.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Genius idea, thank you. Was able to step through the install procedure using voiceover and the screenshots on this page http://www.macstories.net/mac/os-x-lion-installation-guide-boot-discs-and-qa/
Definitely a first for me, installing an OS with voice only
