Trying to rebuild aperture library using Masters
I have been having a problem with my photos for months now. Some have disapered and some have just gone crorupt. Made an appointment at the genuis bar and they told me i need to rebuild the library using the masters file on my back up drive. I attempted to do this and all it does is keeps on crashing. Does anyone have any tips as it is now doing my head in
then go in to my external hard drive and find the masters folder.
Is that a Time Machine backup or a copy of your Aperture library? Or a folder with the original master files?
If it is a Time Machine backup, did you restore the "Masters" folder from your backup or drag it over? A TimeMachine backup needs to be restored.
I have managed to import some photos into a newly created library but would like to get all my photos back.
I have then left it to move the Photos but nothing seems to happen and when you right click on the aperture icon on the desk top it says appliction not responing and has an option to force to quit.
This looks like something in the Masters folder cannot be processed.
If you have enough space on you internal drive, create two new Aperture libraries - one for testing and one as the final version.
Open the test version in iPhoto, if you have iPhoto, and the final version in Aperture, so you can have bth libraries open at the same time.
Import only small sets of images at once, 100 images or so.
First import the 100 images into the test library in iphoto, and if that succeeds without hanging, import them into your Aperture library.
Continue to test this way. If iPhoto starts to hang, try to identify the image or video that cannot be processed, and remove it.

I am trying to import aperture library from macbook to new imac the import window sees the external harddrive but does nt see library. I can open library as a refernce library but cannot import onto hardrive as managable files
I may be misreading what you are trying to do but you don't import libraries via the import window. You use File->Import->Library..
If this doesn't resolve your problem post back with more detail of what you are doing and what is happening.

Masters in Aperture Library Using Referenced Files
I use a MBP with an SSD to hold my Aperture 3 library.
I use a G-RAID to store my images and use Referenced Files.
All was good until yesterday, I deleted my Thumbnails to recreate them and remove the orphans.
After restarting Aperture and the processing time to recreate the Thumbnails (AP.Minis, Ap.Thumbnails, and AP.Tinies) I noticed my AP library was huge.
After inspecting the contents, there is now 65Gb worth of Masters, why would these be there since I use Referenced files and why would they have just now shown up after rebuilding my Thumbnails?Remember:
-- A RAW file cannot be edited. It can only be written in a camera (or scanner, etc.) To be seen, it must be read through a RAW developer. The RAW developer (or converter, if you prefer) can apply changes to the bitstream (called "adjustments" in Aperture) but those changes always live in a separate file, called a "version" in Aperture. EVERY master image file in Aperture has at least one version file. The two are combined, in real time, every time you see a file. Thus questions about the Aperture library becoming corrupted are a bit moot - if you lose your library you will lose your edits. The only way to "save" edits to a RAW file is either adjust it in Aperture (or Lightroom) and let the program combine the two, or convert the file to an industry standard format, like TIFF or JPEG.
-- Aperture uses a "non-destructive" workflow. This means that it never really edits ANY file - not even a JPEG. This avoids the problem of recompressing JPEGS each time they are opened and close. So even JPEGS remain unaltered with your "edits" or "adjustments" being stored in one or more versions.
The only time you need to "save" a file in Aperture is when you need a new file in a specific format to give to someone. Until then, Aperture happily keeps track of your original images (managed or referenced) and the corresponding "edits" which it stores in a version linked to the original image file.
There are many reasons to prefer managed over referenced or vice versa, but fears of database integrity should not be one of them. You are making a lot of work for yourself - put the Aperture Vault on your server and/or use Time Machine. "Exporting" is a terrible way to try to make backups - it will take forever and you will end up with files scattered all over the place, defeating the purpose for which you bought Aperture in the first place.
Hope this helps.

I have consolidated iPhoto into aperture 3.2.2 and now have both aperture and iPhoto put consolidated library on 2.0 USB external drive. Have been removing duplicate photos from 23,000 down to 15,000. Problem in trying to close aperture and now tried to move library from 2.0 USB to 800FW and can see projects but no thumbnails. Aperture error now reads not responding. Can I repair library on 2.0 at this point?
Sharon,
did you do anything else besides copying your library to a fire wire drive after your last post Aperture not responding ?
Since that library probalbly already needed fixing, I'd recommend to force quit Aperture and use the "First Aid" to repair your Library.

IPhoto11 continually trying to rebuild the library upon exiting...
What triggers this behavior and why? Also, it appears to occur even after the rebuild was successful previously. This activity also takes hours to complete? What actions can be taken to correct this?
Thanks for all help!

Mac OS X Version 10.7.2
Hardware:
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac6,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.33 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 3 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: IM61.0093.B07Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Unable to restore aperture library using time machine
Aperture's UI was being barely responsive earlier today, and when I deleted a photo, it ended up actually deleting an entire album.
So I close Aperture and go to my last Time Machine backup to restore my Aperture library. The restore is going perfectly normally, but it gets about halfway through and stops. It throws up a "You do not have permission to do that" notice.
I've tried doing this numerous ways, including an actual "Restore" via Time Machine and also simply pulling the Aperture library off the Time Machine HDD via Finder. Same result no matter what I do.
Help please! I'm looking at an icon of my Aperture library that has all my photos in it, but I cannot copy it!Thanks, MacDLS. I had checked the permissions under Get Info, but I don't remember an "ignore ownership" option. I'll look for it.
The problem may be a corrupted HDD. After posting my question, I ran Disk Utility, and it was unable to complete a "Repair Disk" on the backup HDD. So I'm assuming there are some corrupted sectors. -
Tried to rebuild iphoto library twice - "unexpectedly quits"
Hi there
Iphoto froze up and so I did a restart only find that all my photos had gone from the library and all albums. I followed the advice on this forum and tried twice to rebuild the library. Both times all went well for the first part and then iphoto "unexpectedly quit" - each time.
I don't think I've ever tampered with hard drive photo folders. The only other info I have is that iphoto had been very slow before it froze.
Help! Please!!
Thanks very much.Sorry I guess I wasn't clear in my last email.
I held down the option+shift keys while starting iPhoto and the message that came up was that my library couldn't be found and did I want to find it or create a new one. I clicked on find and the photo library in pictures appeared. I highlighted that and clicked on open but it wouldn't open. Should I have clicked on "create new library" instead? Or am I dealing with the wrong library file. Although this is the biggest of the two files, the other ones( that are now on the desktop) seem to have some different stuff to this one.
By the way I can see the individual thumbnails in the pictures folder if I click on the sub folders, so the pictures are there somewhere.
Sorry for the long and endless emails and thanks for your advice! -
Formatted disk drive: How to rebuild Aperture library?
Last night I thought I was formatting a USB drive, and instead formatted my Drobo containing my entire Aperture library. Even now, 24 hours later, I break into a cold sweat thinking about it. 1.5Tb of images, my life's work, wiped.
I am going to Drive Savers on Monday, and believe based on my initial experiments that they will be able to recover at least some of the files. But I think that the drive structure is lost...
If this is the case, is there any way to reconstruct my Aperture data from the component files absent the directory structure and file names?
Please?"Your life's work" in only one place without a backup? 'nuf said, now you know better. *Even redundant storage is no replacement for a proper backup!*
IF Drive Savers can salvage your data, they may also be able to save the structure (Aperture database). Hopefully, your initial experiments didn't write to the drive in question much. Once you noticed the foul-up, you should have ceased all writing to that disk immediately to preserve any chance of forensic salvage. If you can get enough of the Aperture database restored, you will likely need to rebuild the database (command-option and launch) on Aperture startup of your library.
Supposing that Drive Savers can't restore the Aperture database, you'll only likely be able to reconstruct your data by manually reverse-engineering the salvaged photos and available data elements (structure and extended attributes).
Do you happen to have a Time Machine backup anywhere?
I HIGHLY recommend investment into some online storage or other legitimate backup scheme when you have so much value in your data. NEVER in only one place, no matter how redundant. With a Mac Pro, you can fit up to FOUR hard drives internally, at least one should have had an Aperture vault or copy of the library.

Repair and Rebuild Aperture Library Failed
This is similar to an earlier discussion but following those suggestions didn't work, so am posting this Q == I have a library from 2009 that has 10G in it. It is a 3.4.5 Aplibrary and on trying to open it it says it has to be upgraded [not sure why] and then it comes back saying it can't = I tried to repair and also did a rebuild, and imported it into a new library == in all cases there is nothing there = no projects, no photos -- this is on an internal drive on my MacPro and all dries are extended/journaled.
I opened the package contents and find the following -- before I do anything else, what should I do next?Looking at your screen shot it does not appear promising. The Masters folder as well as the Previews, Thumbnails and others are reporting there size as 0 bytes, basically empty. Were the masters in this library referenced?
You say this is a library from 2009 but that it was a 3.4.5 library, how can that be? 3.4.5 is a fairly recent release. Did you open and upgrade this library at some point before trying to open it now?
Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano - BTW is this related to your other thread on the library size discrepancy between copied Aperture libraries? -
IPhoto crashes even after trying to rebuild iPhoto library database.
iPhoto won't open after I synced new iPhone 5s to my Mac v10.6.8. I tried holding down the Option and Command key and this forced the iPhoto library manager to open. I then ticked to rebuild Library Manager and then it crashes again. I also cannot back up my existing iphoto library as I am unable to locate it. I have checked for latest software updates and it appears to be update. My iphoto is version 7.1.5
The log for my error is below. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What you have accessed here are iPhoto's own repair tools. iPhoto Library Manager is a 3rd party application.
I also cannot back up my existing iphoto library as I am unable to locate it
By default your iPhoto Library is in your Pictures Folder.
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
Post back with the result. -
Can't switch to old 3.2.2 Aperture library (using 3.5.1)
Hello there,
I use Aperture 3.2.2 (with a 100GB Library on an external drive) and I've just bought a new MacBook Pro which is running the latest version of Aperture (3.5.1). When I go to 'file > Switch to library > Other/new' and click the 'Other library' button then select my 100GB 3.2.2 Library, which is on my external drive, Aperture tells me:
"The selected library is from an older version of Aperture and requires a relaunch to switch. Choose “Relaunch” to relaunch Aperture with the new library."
However, once I click 'Relaunch' it doesn't load my old library but instead displays the default Library (which is empty for me as it's a fresh install).
Can anyone help me access my 3.2.2 from within Aperture 3.5.1 (I'm running OS X 10.9.5)? Any ideas ideas will be greatly appreciated!
ThanksYes, the message is misleading (actually it is down right poor) but you need to update the library before you can do anything with it in the new version of Aperture.
So to update it, first quit Aperture , then locate the old library in the Finder and double click the library. This will open Aperture on the library and as it needs to be updated you will be asked if that is what you want to do.
Once it is updated you can then use the library as you wish.
Note while the upgrade procedure is safe it is always a good idea to have a backup of it before starting.

IPhoto not responding when trying to rebuild permissions library
I did the latest OS upgrade about a month ago now and nothing has been good with my iMac since.
Please help!!! iPhoto not responding during photo library permissions repair process. Cannot get access to 10 years of family photos. This process is systematically erasing my four childrens childhoods from my picture library.Seriously, how can anyone help you with that amount of information?
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 10 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have. -
Wish to rebuild iPhoto library using iphoto library manager
I have an iPhoto library with name 'iPhoto Library LS'. I wish to rebuild it using iPhoto Library Manager. I was just wondering if I can rebuild it and give it new name of 'iPhoto Library' instead?
Thanks and I look forward to your reply.

Message was edited by: BGmailHello Terance/BG,
I wanted to piggyback on this thread. I recently re-built my primary library in iPhoto with the help of iPhoto Library Manager. I noticed that the rebuild created a new library called "Default". I opened with the new re-built library and everything seems to be running fine. Can I now delete the old "iPhoto Library" in order to maintain hard drive space? -
Cannot Rebuild iphoto Library - empty xml file
I keep my photos on an external hard drive - and last night i accidentally disconnected the hard drive while i was using iPhoto. iPhoto quit automatically as the library it was using vanished.
When i tried to restart the library after reconnecting the hard drive iPhoto is showing that there are no photos and no events. I checked the package contents and the photos (7000+) are all still there.
So i tried to rebuild the library using iphoto library manager after reading some other similar posts. Unfortunately, iPhoto library manager tells me that the library cannot be rebuilt as the xml file is empty.
Please don't tell me that i have to recreate this library - i had 100+ albums, dozens of web galleries, multiple calendars, etc. and i just can't bear the thought of losing all those hours of work. Please tell me there is another solution!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Are you sure iPhoto is pointing at the right library?
hold down the option (or alt) key when launching iPhoto. Select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the library on the disk.
If that fails, then you won't have to recreate all the library - just restore your back up.
You do have a back up, don't you?
Otherwise:
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
