Trying to record with guitar

alright first and foremost, i'm new to mac and grageband, so far i'm loving it. next, i'm running into a problem. when i plug my guitar in the input, turn up the volume and turn "monitor:on" it still plays thru the mic. like i can tell the input is coming through the mic. am i missing something here? (i know i have to be) thanks in advance, a happy new mac user thus far though

i have the line-in selected, turned the internal mic all the way down, turned the line-in all the way up and i'll have head phones (noise cancelling) and i can talk and hear my voice through them as if my built in mic on my macbook pro is picking it up. (sorry i didn't include the computer type earlier) i have an epiphone noel gallagher supernova edition (basically a semi-hollow archtop electric) i selected line-in on system preferences, i didn't know if their is some other setting i need to change on garageband though (i did turn monitor to on).
do i need to buy like an audio interface to run into the laptop? i have read this in another forum, but i didn't know if i could get by without this or not.
alright, i think i may have answered my own question on that one. since it's a line-in, and i don't have a pre-amp on my guitar or anything, it's probably really low and wouldn't pick up. but i still don't understand why i could hear my voice over the headphones. oh well, i need to get an audio interface or something of the sort to actually amplify the guitar. next question: anyone know of one that will work well with intel macs?

  • Recording with guitar to computer through USB X-Fi

I am having a problem trying to record with my guitar through my USB X-Fi 5.. I am using a program called Audacity to capture the recording. I have my guitar hooked up to a Line 6 POD 2.0 effects device that has a left/right output. Then I plugged the /8th male end running from that into the Line-In port on the USB X-Fi 5. and then to my computer via USB. But I cannot hear my guitar when playing and it will not capture the recording. I basically bought the USB X-Fi 5. because when recording with my guitar I thought that my laptops sound card was making the recording of low quality. So I got the USB X-Fi 5. to help that. Any help would be greatly appreciated!Message Edited by BulletFMV on 2-06-2008 03:42 PMMessage Edited by BulletFMV on 2-06-2008 03:43 PM

That USB audio interface isn't any better for recording from onboard sound. You should have bought least the Creative E-MU 0202 USB (if you prefer Creative products/USB audio interfaces).
With your current setup, instead of using Audacity, you could try, say, Cockos Reaper + Asio4All driver.

In any case, remember also read the software documentation as well ... all needed information for recording task is normally guided there in user manual(s).

  • Audigy 2ZS Platinum Pro - ...trying to record with Videostudio, Virtual VCR, Roxio DVD Builder

...just bought (and installed) a SoundBlaster Audigy 2ZS Platinum Pro - the one with the "breakout box" - to replace the on-board Dell audio sound system, which seems to have died after 4 months.
I am able to get good, clear sound from any and all applications that use "playback" audio.
At present, I can get "playback sound" from one program feature that came with my capture device - an Aver Media USB 300, which was plugged in to the "Line in 2" socket on the break out box. Then I tried to record with it... - "Record Operation Failure!" I'm stilll waiting to see what responses I get from the Aver message board in that regard.
Then I tried recording video (and the accompanying audio) with Ulead Videostudio 8, Virtual VCR, and Roxio DVD Builder, none of which could record sound, even in "preview mode". Before the on board sound system stopped functioning, those features worked on all of the above programs except for Virtual VCR, which I hadn't yet installed or tried out.
I've checked the Play/Record Volume Control in "Accessories/Entertainment" and the Line 2 is activated and selected. I've tried plugging in to Line /Mic but that hasn't worked either. I need to go to Radio Shack to get an adapter to plug in to Line 3 and give that a try.
But before I spend even more money, have you ever seen anything like this?
    - Jeff.

    Jorge,
Thanks kindly for the suggestion, during the installation it did not complain about this patch being installed allready, I'll give this one more shot and see if it persits.
I ran memtest on the machine (10 cycles) wow this thing (G5) is loud in single user mode. I guess the fans don't have power management enabled.
I'm guessing that the issue is from lack of RAM, (512) but I am not 100% on this. Though my research points towards that, It's kind of odd that an app would reach into some other memory segment.
    Thank You Again.
I throught all Tiger updates would be obtainable via "Software Update" . I should have searched support.apple.com first.

  • Severe static when trying to record electric guitar

I've been trying to record a clean electric guitar and every recording is just covered in heavy hissing static sound. This didn't happen when I recorded an acoustic guitar through a microphone. I have an electric guitar going into a small amp, with the amp level set on the clean channel at a very low setting, then the headphone/output is running directly into my M-Audio FastTrack USB interface, which is connected to the computer. I have adjusted the "recording level" in garage band so that the signal never gets close to the red in the individual instrument track. The "output" knob on the FastTrack is set relatively low also, about "4" out of 10. When I play back the recorded track, the master level meter never goes into the red either. Yet no matter what volume I record at I'm getting this strong crackling/hissing as if it was extremely overdriven.
Related question: When I play on the electric guitar, is it supposed to show an indication in the LCD box, as it does when I'm playing on my midi controller? It doesn't have the little indicator light showing signal, nor does the master level indicator, when I'm recording. Only the individual track level indicator shows the signal coming in. Maybe this is normal...
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

OK, well I solved my own problem through trial and error. Rant: I switched to GB from ProTools on the theory that GB was supposed to "just work" and I want to be a musician, not an audio engineer. Here is how I fixed the static: one of my garage band books told me I could set the Garage Band audio preferences to "System" default, and then set my computer's audio preferences to my audio interface for the ins and outs, because I wanted to play all of computer's audio, whether in garageband or not, through my reference studio monitors. Well doing it this way results in massive static when recording a real instrument, for no apparent reason. So to fix this, you have to set Garageband's own audio in/out settings to your audio interface, NOT to the system settings. This caused the static in my recordings to completely disappear. Go figure.

  • Noise while trying to record with XtremeGamer (with samp

I recently purchased an XtremeGamer and a Sennheiser PC6 Gaming headset to go along with it on Thursday, I installed it and had to fiddle around with a few settings to get my mic to work and it did great... for about a day. On Friday I booted my computer up and the headset mic wouldn't record anything when it did it only records very quiet music that i play with winamp which is strange.. but not my actual voice. Yes, microphone is the recording device its, "selected" and boost is enabled.
Not really knowing where to begin I unplugged my headset mic and plugged in an old cheap one and it worked, but not nearly as well as my headset one initially did. I've tried placing the card in a different pci slot reinstalling drivers etc, nothing has fixed the problem. I am considering just rmaing this hassle back to ncix all together, this is my first sound card and while the music and gaming audio is superior it leaves me with a bit of a bad first impression.Message Edited by matthewds on 09-08-200706:29 PM

Is this card defecti've? do I need to RMA the **bleep** thing and get an auzentech prelude?

If I am not wrong, you need data from SQL tables in form of
XML. Then you can get that straight from SQL by using FOR XML
clause. FOR XML modes can be of 3 types RAW, AUTO or EXPLICIT. You
can use the mode as per your need.

  • Audio recording with QT

Further to my previous post I have tried to record with QT 7
It shows my ADVC device but when I click on record. Says that no data was sent.
I checked that the ADVC which is connected to "output"  of the tape player is well set for 48 Khz audio, and is connected via fire wire to my Mac.
    What could be wrong
    Thanks in advance
    Ivan

    OK, that is really true...
While I was waiting for a reply, I tried what David suggested and used my video Hi8 to simulate a transfer with no sound except the one from my tapes....and guess what ????
    it works !
I am going to try it again with STP and QT7 under same conditions.
Funny that these boxes seem to need a video running.
Even more than that, I have tried an empty tape...and it does not seem to work !
Which means you really need an active signal
thanks a lot for this reply which is very helpful

    Hello EP,
Which ATS version do you use?
FF 3.15 neither 3.15 are supported by ATS 9.3x.
    From ATS release notes:
    Browser: Internet Explorer 6.x, 7.x, 8.x. and Firefox 3.5/3.6
It could be the problem but I can't really tell you.
Have you installed FF after having installed ATS?
Have you run OpenScript as administrator?
Is the service Oracle ATS Browser Helper started?
Can you go to OpenScript -> Help -> Run diagnose tool?

  • Recording with Debut/CamStudio

    Hi there!
I've been trying to record with Debut, which works fine, but I cannot record any sound, due to the
limited sound card on my laptop.
I've now bought Sound Blaster X-fi Go! Pro, which was recommended by the guys of the local
computershop, but still there is no connection to any speakers, only to the internal mic or to the
    Sound Blaster mic-line.
Did they recommend the wrong product, or am I overseeing something?
Can anyone please help me out?
    Vin from The Netherlands.

Sorry, my mistake! There was a slight installation problem, but I've got the 'What you hear' option now!

I'm trying to record audio into my iPad2 using GarageBand and an iRig, but I can't monitor my tracks at the same time as recording, meaning if I lay down a drum track and attempt to record guitar, I can't hear the drums while recording. Thoughts?

Hi, I have this exact same problem. I haven't been using an iRig, just a cheap USB-jack cable. I managed to do this with the first cable I bought, but since it broke I've been unable to find a replacement that allows me to hear the drums while recording. DId you manage to get over this issue? If so I would really like to know how. Thanks and best wishes.

  • I'm trying to multi-track using an m-audio device, I can record my guitar fine. However, I want to create a new track so I can record an acoustic tambourine over the top. Instead it records the original guitar as well as tambourine? its really annoying

I'm trying to multi-track using an m-audio device, I can record my guitar fine. However, I want to create a new track so I can record an acoustic tambourine over the top. Instead it records the original guitar as well as the tambourine coming out with a really distorted sound. I've managed to record over the top of a guitar before and add diferent riffs and sounds but I've tried all of the settings but its still not working. Basically I want to record different tracks without it recording my previous guitar riffs as well. Help would really be appreciated.

Ah that was it, thanks a lot common sense really but thanks for the help

  • Guitar "twang" when recording with macmini and M-Audio Fast Track Ultra

hey was hoping someone might have similar setup or enough knowledge to help out.
when i record guitar through my interface i get a clip after each guitar note that sounds very flangey (or like and outter-space type "twang" if that helps describe it) i was hoping it would come out a bit cleaner. and yes i have made sure no effects are turned on. its should be straight up clean guitar, and the notes preceding these clips are in-fact nice and clean. its just the milliseconds after each note that are bothering me.
my biggest issue is i don't know if its being caused by my interface or a bad setting within the program. I am using the build in preamp and plugging directly into the unit, so i'm going to get a mic and see how it sounds then.
I did a lot of research on the D/A interfaces out there and i went with the fast track ultra for the price and because the company really hyped these preamps. this is the general description you will find on sites trying to sell the FTU "4 preamps with award-winning M-Audio Octane technology"
if this noise is cause by a problem with these preamp.... im gona be POBB! i would have saved up and waited to buy and apogee product! anyone out these using an ensemble??? would love to hear some feedback about that unit! thanks in advance for any help!

hey thanks for the reply! i have since adjusted a few parameters and had good luck going directly into the ftu's 1/4in jack in the front. the more i use the program the more im understanding (you can see i'm relieving my neebie side!) i have not messed much with the ftu's control program itself, is this helpful when trying to get good levels and such?
how knowledgable are you about microphones? i have a garbage mic from radio shack and when trying to record my acoustic guitar with it i really need to crank up the input on the ftu and be close to the mic to get a signal. this in turn creates that "fuzzy warm" sound that you can hear before the guitar starts playing. it's that analog sound like going through an old tube-amp or something... now while the instrument is playing its not as noticeable obviously and some people even like to add this sort of effect onto digital stuff to give it that warm feeling...
my question is- what if i want just a nice crisp acoustic recording from my mic into garageband? do i go with something that uses phantompower or what? im just so lost because i don't know much about mics (except they can get REAL expensive... saw one for 7k at guitar center by me!) well sorry for ramblings! thanks in advance for help!

  • No sound or strange sounds when trying to record guitar

    Hi!
I'm new to Logic Pro, after having worked with garageband for many years.  I've just been trying to record guitar through my audio interface, with strange results.  I've set my audio in and output source as my M-Audio firewire solo, created an audio track, and selected the guitar sound I want.  At first there was no input, then when I deleted the first track and created a new one, I could hear the guitar through the monitor and it was being input, but it had a horrible distorted and out of tune sound - and that was how it sounded when I recorded it too.  Then I tried it again and it seemed to be working fine for about 5 minutes - it sounded fine through the headphones and the recording was right - but then went back to the strange sounds again - without me changing anything!
I'm using Logic Pro 9.1.8, on a Macbook Pro running Mac OSX 10.8.3, and have a M-Audio Firewire Solo audio interface.
I'm very frustrated right now - so I'd be grateful for any help!
    Thanks,
    Stephen

    Hi stephenhis,
If you are having issues with imput audio in Logic Pro, the first place to start would be with some basic isolation troubleshooting to see if the issue can be localized. That should provide a good basis for further troublshooting should the issue persist.
