Trying to reinstall osx

i've recently purchased a used ibook and am trying to reinstall with the tiger dvd i just got, but the computer just spits it out everytime. is there a logical reason for this?

Dear MarekB,
Thought that might be too simple!
Just to clarify: do you have the disks that came with your iBook? Presumably these are the disks from which you are trying to reinstall. That the disk is visible in the startup disk preference pane would suggest that it the disk is bootable, but the computer apparently refuses to boot from it on restart.
I suppose there is the possibility that the disks you have are somehow corrupted, but I cannot be sure about this. And the fact that you cannot boot from other disks does not make this the likely cause.
One further suggestion, then. The following article might help: Article #75459-de – Mac OS X: Tastenkombinationen. This link will take you to the German article, just in case, by some off chance, the key combinations might be different. The most appropriate option here might be the one that forces the computer to look for another device to startup from – holding down Option-Command-Shift-Delete.
Sorry I can't really be more helpful, but do post back with any developments.
Yours, W.

    Hotrodmkviii,
try rebooting in Recovery mode, but when you reach the Mac OS X Utilities menu, run Terminal (from Utilities in the menu bar) instead. Inside the Terminal window, give it the following command, and then press the Return key:
    diskutil list
Please include in your reply the output from that command.

That's not quite the proper way as far as I can tell. Usually, one boots directly into the Recovery HD using COMMAND and R keys at startup. If you cannot do that then most likely there is a problem with the hard drive. Since this is a new computer i would make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

  • I did erase app store by mistake and i can't undo it and I'm trying to reinstall osx but can't find a link

i did erase app store by mistake and i can't undo it and I'm trying to reinstall osx but can't find a link

10.3 does not have the App Store available.      Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac and the following will bring it back depending on what you have:
Any version of 10.6, use the 10.6.8 Combo Update:
    Combo v1.1 (7/25/2011)
Any version of 10.7, use the 10.7.5 Combo Update: 10.7.5 Combo
Any version of 10.8, use the 10.8.5 Combo Update: 10.8.5 Combo
Any version of 10.9, use the 10.9.2 Combo Update: 10.9.2 Combo
Note, if you it does not bring it back, you may need to run the combo keys of command-R on boot restore if you have 10.7 or later, and then the appropriate Combo update.    If you have 10.6.8 or earlier, command-R restore is not available, and you need to either use the original 10.6 installer disc, if the Mac is newer than March 15, 2010, or the 10.6.3 retail disc found here for 10.6 compatible Macs that are older (that includes any Intel CPU Mac with at least 1 GB of RAM):
10.6 retail is available from the Apple Store on http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard (the /us/ in the link may be changed for the standard two letter country code matching the store link).
If you are using a PowerPC Mac, G3, G4, or G5 you can't install 10.6, or the App Store.
Those using 10.6.8 or earlier, do not jump to 10.7 or later, without reading this tip first:

  • Mac not connecting to a wifi network when trying to reinstall OSX using Internet recovery

Hi guys. I'm using a Macbook Air(late 2010 model) and seem to have some trouble reinstallling OSX 10.8.5 using Internet recovery. When I'm trying to reinstall the OS running the recovery mode, the wifi is not connecting. After some trials I noticed that when I run the recovery mode, the network settings are automatically going back to defualt ( I use manual IP address and everything but in recovery mode it falls back to 'Using DHCP'). Just let me know if I'm supposed to provide any other information. I request everyone to help me with this. Thanks in advance.

I reccomend to set ur router back to dchp and after you are done with recovery set it back to manual ip. Or if you have the DMG of the ur installation, create a bootable installation disk. Several tutorials on youtube based on your OSX version and reformat that way.

  • Only the recovery disk shows up when trying to reinstall OSX.

I was trying to erase and install OSX because my computer was starting to get really slow. It actually froze on start up, disk utility was the only way I could get it to work. I erased everything off my "Mac HD" disk i believe that is what it was called, whatever the default was. When I reinstalled OSX it finished everything but froze as soon as it started to boot up the desktop. From there I had to go back into disk utility and check everything. It appears there is nothing on my, used to Mac HD drive, which is now renamed. Where it shows "Available space" it only shows a "-". When i try to verify and repair this disk it says that journal need be replayed, but volume is read only, or something like that. I tried resetting the PRAM already and it does nothing. I have successfully reinstalled OSX a few weeks/months ago due to similar slow computer performance, but this problem came up this time. What did I do to mess this up so badly?

    caroliver,
you didn’t necessarily do anything to mess it up; hard disks are mechanical devices, and they won’t last forever.
Are you still able to boot into Recovery mode? If so, do so, then select Utilities from the menu bar, and run Terminal there. Give the following commands in the Terminal window:
    diskutil list
    diskutil cs list
    mount
Please include in your reply the full output from these commands.

  • Tried to reinstall OSX 10.8, it will not let me use my main hard drive. Only external.

I'd been preparing for a clean reinstall of OSX via pressing command-R during start-up. When I went and tried to erase my hard drive so I could repartition it with a clean OSX, it doesn't even show up as an option for the install location of OSX. Then when I look in Disk Utility(in safe mode, regular mode, any mode) it allows me to Verify and Repair permissions as long as many times as I want, but it won't let me do anything on the only other tab(partition), and I can't figure out how to make it an option for my installation.
Anyone run into a similar issue?
    Thanks!

I'm not sure I understand what you're doing, but to erase the startup volume, you must be booted from another volume, such as the Recovery partition.

  • How do I clean install?  I have tried the reinstall osx but still the other apps I have downloaded are still there.  And also the Safari is not working anymore... I have to install Opera to have a working browser since I reinstalled the OS... please help.

Hi Please help me to understand how the clean install works...
I have purchased this ultrabook hoping I can slowly learn how to work it... I am a windows user and would like to shift to linux based machines...
My first problem is that I need to run IE explorer and media player to play wmv files on a cbt nugget iso image... It's impossible to do it since Mac does not support WMV file format... so I need to install WINE to emulate windows OS inside OS X and run windows programs... I can't install it either by following this site...
    http://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/
I can't seem to run wine after the last step, it has given me error messages.
Now I tried to uninstall it, not working either,
My last resort is to restore to factory default settings > power restart, press alt key as soon as you hear mac sound... choose HD on the right side, enter WIFI key and wait for 4 hours reinstalling os x Lion
I found out all the apps are still there.... is there something I missed????

What you're doing is reinstalling OS X over top of your present installation. If you want to reinstall "fresh", do this:
Reboot while holding down Command + Option + R, first use Disk Utility to erase your volume, then reinstall OS X.
Best done if you FIRST connect to the Internet using Ethernet...much faster than WiFi.

  • Applications won't open, trying to reinstall OSX

I have a G5 iMac and I installed Leopard about a month ago and have installed the 10.5.2 update. The only software I have installed on the computer is iWork '08 and the Adobe Creative Suite 3 Master Collection (both of which were purchased legally.) The problem I am having is I can't get applications to open. When I click on an icon on the dock it bounces for a second and I get the spinning rainbow and then... nothing. The icon stops bouncing and the spinning rainbow goes away and the program never opens. I called Apple Care and they had me try to restart the computer in Safe Boot mode however it was unsuccessful. When I get to the login screen for Safe Boot mode I am not able to click anything or type in a password. The login menu will appear for a few seconds, then go away, and this keeps repeating. I am also unable to restart my computer from the top left corner. I have to push the button. Apple Care told me to reinstall Tiger and then reinstall Leopard. When I tried to put in the install disc for Tiger the installer will not open, it does the same thing as the applications. I have my computer backed up so I don't mind wiping it clean but I can't seem to get anything to work, what can I do? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

I was able to fix my problem today if anyone is interested. I started the computer while holding the option key with the Tiger start up disc in the computer. A menu comes up with a Macintosh HD icon, Hardwear test icon, and an icon for the DVD. I selected the DVD icon and clicked the arrow icon and then just followed the instructions that went along with the disc. I still have no idea what the problem was but I'm glad it's fixed, I hope this helps if anyone is having similar problems.

  • Forgot my password, trying to reinstall OSX from disc

I have forgoten/lost my administrative password for my Macbook running latest version of Leopard with bootcamp. I have tried not only a osx leopard disc purchased bu the install discs that came with the computer to either use the utility to reset the password or just wipe my system clean and start over.
Every time I try to boot from the disc by holding "c" on startup is just continuoulsey restarts itself... can't get to the install utlity

No it shouldn't be. Try {starting up in Safe Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455] and see if you manage to fully start up. If this works there is a chance that restarting normally after this may resolve the issue.
You should then use Disk Utility to check your hard disk for any issues. See [this|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417] document for details.

  • I am trying to reinstall osx but I do not know my email address I installed it with from the start so I can't reinstall it . Please anyone help me ?

    ??

    What Mac Model (year, type)?
What version of OS X are you installing?
What, exactly, do you do when you try to install the OS?
    What, exactly, happens?
If you are upgrading an existing OS installation to Mavericks, then no email addresses should be required.
If you are installing Mavericks clean on a blank hard drive, no email address is required.
You may need to enter the email address that you used as your Apple ID to download Mavericks from the Mac App Store, and you may need it to log into your iCloud account and other Apple services when setting up a brand new Mac.
You really don't know what email address you might have used? You've tried every email address you've had in the last couple of years...?

  • Crash after cocktail, trying to reinstall osx

While using cocktail, noticed newly placed files on my hard drive, ds, etc. (discovered these were peviously invisible, made visible by cocktail) I stupidly deleted them. After a restart, got prohibitory sign. Now trying to archive and install, but getting following message, "there were errors installing the software, please try installing again." Don't want to erase hard drive, have lots of info and appls on it. I'm about 6 months from my last backup and have done a lot of work in past 6 months. Any ideas, all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you have a second Firewire capable Mac?
If you do, you can offload the most critical files using target disk mode:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
If you don't, get Prosoft Data Rescue and Alsoft Disk Warrior. Both may come useful here, as well as an external Firewire hard drive that is large enough to recover the information to from your iMac. Prosoft Data Rescue is the least invasive of your file system, and recovers the files as they are, assuming the directory is not in bad shape to an external hard drive, so that you can attempt at least an archive and install without the possibility of losing data.
If Prosoft Data Rescue is unable to recover information from the drive, then you may be forced to try Alsoft Disk Warrior to repair the directory. Note, if the hard drive is dying, neither program will be able to fix your situation, and it is possible that the hard drive was dying in the first place which started causing problems.
In the future do not use Cocktail to do anything other than the cron tasks, updating prebinding and force deleting files after you've backed them up just in case you force delete the wrong file. Its cache cleaning program can cause things to get seriously out of whack. I don't know why this happens, but it can, and I've seen this happen with all cache cleaning utilities.
A good lesson from all of this is to more frequently backup your data as my FAQ explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
    Good luck!

  • I Can"t restart my G4 PPC after trying to reinstall OSX 10.46?????

    Hi there everyone,
    Can someone please help.
I am unable to restart my classic G4 desktop after trying to restore a disk image to it. I used it as a target disk and was told that the restoration was successful. I used to have Tiger 10.4.8 installed , but was told by Apple that the files were corrupt, and so had to pay a lot of money on ebay for a 10.4.6 installation disk. This installed O.K and I was able to start the machine. I then started in target mode and restored the original disk image from my laptop using disk utility erasing the target disk. It said the restoration was successful, but now when I try to start up the computer it comes up with the white apple startup screen, whizzes around for a while and then switches itself back off. I have tried starting up from the installation disk but that does not work (neither pressing the C or D keys at startupmake any differrence).

Hi, other than an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.
Your best bet is DiskWarrior, you need the CD/DVD though.
