Backing up to a third-party NAS with Time Machine is risky, and unacceptably risky if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want, and I also know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS for backup, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple.)

  • Strange error trying to restore from time machine sparsebundle

I had my iMac hard drive go bad, so I replaced it, powered the unit back up and booted into the Snow Leopard install disk.
I got to the step where I'm trying to restore from my Time Machine .sparsebundle and I selected the date and time of the backup I wanted to restore. When I click Next to go the next screen (Select a Destination) the utility gets stuck "Searching for Disks," and below that a warning icon says
"This disk does not have enough space to restore your system."
This sounds scary, and as the Time Machine drive now has the sole copy of my data I'm reluctant to do anything to it.
Does anyone know what's going on?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan.

Are you sure the new drive is formatted properly?
Check it via Disk Utility (you can get there from the same Utilities menu where you selected +Restore from backups).+
Select the top line of the drive (with size and make). Be sure the *Partition Map Scheme* at the bottom says +GUID Partition Table.+
Then select the next line, with the name you gave it, and be sure the Format shown towards the lower left is +Mac OS Extended (Journaled),+ unless you made it +Mac OS Extended (Case-Sensitive, journaled),+
Also see how much space it shows for Available to the right.

  • Time machine corrupted sparsebundle? how to repair? time machine restore not working

On my macbook pro, after starting with Cmd-R, I erased the hard disk, re-installed Mavericks and I want to restore my back up with Time Machine. I select the NAS where the backup is, it sees the backup file but it says: "There is a problem with this backup and it can't be restored". I also copied the backup file (with extension sparsebundle) to another external hard disk and tried to use it from there but I have the same problem. With my iMac (as the laptop is not usable since I started it with cmd-R), when I double click on the backup file (ext sparsebundle), it mounts and I can actually see and access the files that are there. I do not understand why the restore is not working with the Time Machine. It seems the sparsebundle is corrupted. I tried these instructions: http://www.garth.org/archives/2011,08,27,169,fix-time-machine-sparsebundle-nas-b ased-backup-errors.html
But I am stuck at this step: tail -f /var/log/fsck_hfs.log
    iMac-6:~ root# tail -f /var/log/fsck_hfs.log
/dev/rdisk3s2: ** Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.

Nothing seems to happen even after a few hours (like 3 hours). The sparsebundle bakcup file is about 200 GB big. It does not seem to do anything as I do not notice any disk activity.
Could someone please advise how to do the restore with the Time Machine or how I can repair the backup file?

Well, if Time Machine is the only thing on that hard drive and there is only one partition, sooner or later, Time Machine will fill up the entire thing and you can't use it for anything else.
Now, you can start over, but that will mean that your Time machine backups will be wiped out. If that is what you want, it is a rather easy process easily accomplished in Disk Utility:
With hard drive connected, open Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities). Highlight the Time Machine hard drive (the top entry for it). Click on the Partition tab. In the window, pick 2 partitions under the "volume scheme" and then slide the little thing at the bottom to adjust the size of each partition. Make sure the format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and, under options, click the GUID partition scheme. Name each one (i.e. "Time Machine" and "backups") and click "apply". Disk Utility will first erase the drive and then create 2 partitions (2 totally separate drives so to speak). You're done.....
You can then set up the one for Time Machine and the other to drag over whatever files you want.

  • Slow copying a Time Machine sparsebundle

    Hi everyone,
I stored old and no longer used Time Machine sparsebundle files on my networked Drobo drive. I bought a new DroboFS which is also networked. I have been moving files from the old unit to the new unit, and copying over the network is very fast.
That is, until I tried to copy the sparsebundle files. For example, I tried to move one of the sparsebundle files. Finder says "Preparing to copy". It has been saying that now for 3 days. The sparsebundle files are large, in the 1 TB range. Is Finder unable to copy or move these files? If so, is there another way to move them?
    Cheers!
    Phil

The Snow Leopard Finder (but not the Leopard version) can copy them, if they're undamaged. Try Repairing them, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). Use the procedure for a Time Capsule.
But there are many thousands of "bands" in a sparse bundle, and they won't copy quickly under the best of circumstances.

  • Backup time machine sparsebundle

My time machine sparsebundle is corrupted and after trying many different ways to repair it, it is time to reformat the hard drive.
I read that there is a way to copy the TM sparsebundle to an external drive connected to Time Capsule. Unfortunately, I can no longer find the article.
Can anyone tell me how to move my corrupted sparsebundle to an external usb drive?
    Thanks

How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
For screen shots see this post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4668746?tstart=0
This is only one method.. if you google you will see any number of methods but they generally require you to pay for software.. this is free.

  • I'm trying to reconnect my Time Machine.

    Hello,
I'm trying to reconnect my Time Machine backup.  When I select my Time Machine I'm getting an error message "The disk image "kimby's iMac.sparesebundle" is in use.  Try ejecting the disk image.  How would I do this?
I have no clue what they are talking about.
Any ideas / help would be great.
    Thanks,

The problem is, backups are stored differently when done over a network.  See the blue box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17 for an explanation.
Connect the drive to your Mac, open it via the Finder, and delete the <your computer name>.sparsebundle there.
Then you should be able to continue backing-up to the drive directly.

  • I am trying to update my time machine backup on time capsule, but time machine keeps trying to create an entirely new backup (evidenced by the 200GB backup size). How can I get time machine to modify my old backup rather than create a new one?

I am trying to update my time machine backup on time capsule, but time machine keeps trying to create an entirely new backup (evidenced by the 200GB backup size). How can I get time machine to modify my old backup rather than create a new one?

It must have found the old backup corrupt.. so you will more than likely have little choice. You can archive off the old backup if it is still useful.
You can also verify it. See A5 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
He also has some info on this problem. eg C13.

Since updating OS to Mountain Lion from leopard, I get the following error message when trying to backup with time machine on external drive.  "Could not complete backup to media share.  The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features."  What are AFP features and how do I get Time Machine to backup to my current external backup?

This means that your NAS does not support the required encryption. Update your NAS to the latest firmware or ditch it and buy a Time Capsule (they are the most reliable when using TM).

  • I am trying to delete a Time Machine backup from a Time Capsule.

I am trying to delete a Time Machine backup from a Time Capsule.  The file is about 400GB and my MacBook has been trying to delete it for 5h now. It still says "deleting" but has not given me a "time remaining" yet. Any idea of what I could do????

You should not attempt to delete backups using the Finder. The result can be a corrupted backup.
I recommend you let it complete, no matter how long it takes. That could be days, if your TC is connected via wireless.
It is not necessary to delete backups, since Time Machine will delete old backups some time after they have been deleted from your source volume. For more information read Apple Support Communities contributor Pondini's explanation here: Should I delete old backups? If so, How?

  • Trying to backup my time machine..

I am trying to backup my time machine but keeps coming up with error 6584 can anyone help please
    <Re-Titled By Host>

First, if this is your only backup, you must make another full backup to a locally-attached external hard drive. One backup is never enough to be safe, and backing up over a network is less reliable than backing up locally. Then try each of the following steps that you haven't already taken.
    1. Restart the backup device. You can do that by disconnecting and reconnecting the power cord.
    2. Hold down the option key and select Verify Backups from the TM menu in the menu bar (not the Dock icon.) This operation may take a long time. If the menu-bar icon (a clock that runs backwards) isn't showing, check Show Time Machine in menu bar in the preferences.
    3. Erase the backup device. With a Time Capsule, you do that from within the AirPort Utility application; see its built-in help for details. All backups will be lost, so don't do this until you've backed up to another device. After erasing, select the TC again as a backup destination in the TM preference pane. The first backup should be made over a wired connection, if possible.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
First, empty the Trash, if possible.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) 2>&- | wc -l | pbcopy
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.
The output of the command will be a number. It's automatically copied to the Clipboard. Please paste it into a reply.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

I'm trying to set up time machine to back up on an external HD connected t my airport extreme, but the disk doesn't show as an option in the time machine selecting a disk, any suggestion anyone? My mac "sees" the airport extreme   ??

The first important thing to consider here is that Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port on the AirPort Extreme, so that may likely have something to do with your difficulties.
If you want to continue to try this, the drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and you almost always have to use a powered USB hub with a drive at the port of the Extreme...even if the hard drive has its own power supply....because the port on the Extreme is under powered.
Most users who try this unsupported method have corruption difficulties sooner or later, but we do hear from some users who seem to be able to make it work.
The bottom line is that there is no support from Apple on this if you have difficulties, so you may want to consider a secondary backup plan for your important data.

  • HT201250 trying to set up time machine, it will not connect to airport utility, inspite the wi-fi is very strong.

I have tried repeatedly to connect time machine to my air port utility, and keep getting the message that it was undetected. I have a strong wi-fi connection in my house and I just don't understand that it will not connect. Can anyone help me with this?

Power off both your Mac and the Time Capsule and wait a few minutes
Power up the Time Capsule first, and let it run 2-3 minutes by itself
Power up the Mac next and let it run a full minute.
Go into Time Machine Preferences again and see if you can select the Time Capsule as a destination for Time Machine backups. Do this by first removing any existing disks for Time Machine. Click Add/Remove Disk and remove the existing disk that is set up. Then repeat to select and add the disk again.
If still no luck, open Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences
Locate the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file and move it to the desktop
Then repeat the complete the entire procedure above to see starting at the top, to see if you can select the Time Capsule for Time Machine backups.
