Trying to restart Mac at work. Had to force quit programs. Now stuck on desktop photo no finder.

I don't know what Mac this is, but it froze on the desktop when I tried to eject a jump drive. I tried to restart.  It removed everything from the desktop, but then had to force quit many open programs. It is now on the empty desktop photo with no finder. How can I reboot and start again?

try smc reset or nvram and pram reset
smc reset

nvram and pram reset

if u face same problem after resetting smc and pram and nvram
repair your mac os x with reinstalling it.

I'm running the latest version of iMovie on the latest version of Mavericks with a mid-2010 MBP.  Any ideas regarding what the problem might be and how I can get iMovie running again?

After a couple of days it finally decided to open. Previously it was showing that it was open in the Dock, but no window would appear, the message I posted would show up in the Console, and I'd have to Force Quit.  Hopefully I don't run into any more hitches. Thanks for your response.

  • Need to force quit programs to shut down or restart

    I have an MDD G4 and a G5.
The G5 is smooth as silk– few problems.
I run Tiger on both and Adobe CS2. When I go to shut down or restart I almost always have to force quit the CS2 programs, (as well as other programs like Firefox, mail, text edit), on the G4, almost never on the G5.
I've repaired permissions, downloaded updates to the system, etc.
Could it be a hardware issue as I'm running the same software on my other machine?

I have had problems like this also. I have a Power Mac G5.
I tried to turn on my bluetooth mouse and it worked for a little bit then it froze. I had to restart with another mouse, since then my bluetooth will not open, it freezes when I try, the upper right corner is messed up, the clock does not appear anymore and when I move my mouse up there it shows a spinning icon??? Then when I go to shutdown it will not and shows a spinning icon in the middle of my screen. I have to force quit computer. Everything else seems to be working fine.
I redid my permissions. Any ideas anyone?????

  • IPhoto 11 has stopped responding. I was making a slideshow when it froze, I had to force quit to close it down but now when I try to open it starts to try to open but cannot and I can only close it down through force quit.

IPhoto 11 has stopped responding. I had been working on a large slideshow for a week now and all was great when the slideshow froze when I tried to add another image. To shut it down I had to force quit.  When I have tried to re-open IPhoto starts to launch  but the rainbow icon just keeps going round and I have to force quit to get out of the programm. I cannot access any of the files in IPhoto and it wil not open. Any suggestions??? I would really want to save my images in IPhoto if at all possible as I do not have them stored anywher elese. Any help would be very apprreciated.

Remember: you always need a back up for any important data on your computer. Always.
Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
    If that fails
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • FCPX blanks in timeline, had to force quit, no change

Imported some clips to a library, added some to timeline... I can skim through and the video looks fine, but the timeline does not show the clips... shows the audio waveform, but not the images... there are just blue rectangles where the clips should be (see screen shot).  The project was basically finished, so I exported the file and it looks fine.  I tried to quit and restart FCPX but got a dialogue box that said "completing background tasks" but there were no background tasks occurring.  Tried to quit, and had to "force quit."  Restarted computer, restarted FCPX, still have blanks in the timeline.

IT looks like your thumbnail files need to be regenerated, which is probably what Final Cut was trying to do when those background tasks were running. Assuming your cache files are stored in the library you could go inside the library bundle (with the app closed) and in the render folder locate the thumbnails folder. Drag that to the trash and when you relainch, that folder should be rebuilt.

  • My MacBook Air Freeze and had to force quit

    Hi,
My machinge ( 1.4 GHz, 2GB Memory) is running on Mac OS X Version 10.6.8. Recently, my machine has been freezing a lot even when I'm not using running many application. Just Word and Internet Browser. I had to force quit. These has happened to me almost twice a day for the past 2 weeks. I've repair the disk with "Disk Utlity" but problem still persist. Can someone tell me what happen? I'm feeling really annoyed and frustrated

That repair should be guaranteed. I would try running the Apple Hardware Test to see if it reports anything and I would try reseating the ram chips, after that I would take it back to Apple.

  • HT201272 when i start downloading a CD purchase it downloads approx 3 to 4 songs then just stops says downloading waited a hour still downloading had to force quit iTunes then reopen to complete download keeps doing this every time i purchase a cd any ide

when i start downloading a CD purchase it downloads approx 3 to 4 songs then just stops says downloading waited a hour still downloading had to force quit iTunes then reopen to complete download keeps doing this every time i purchase a cd any ideas ?

I too am facing this problem, however a little differently. I am in the process of uploading my vinyl collection to digital format in Audacity and am having this problem with multiple tracks when played in iTunes. The first few albums I ripped play just fine in iTunes, but the last few skip over about the last minute of every song and go to the next song. As you said, if you drag the time marker past the skipping point though, the rest of the song will play to the end just fine. I then synced these songs onto my iPod and they play perfectly straight through. I was leaning toward a bad mp3 encoding process that was maybe creating a glitch but I'm not sure at this point if they play correctly on my iPod. In quicktime the song will just stop playing at that specfic point, but if you hit play again, it will continue to the end. I can say though, I haven't seen this problem with any iTunes download, or ripped CD that I have ever put into iTunes (which makes my situation a tad different than yours), it's been purely the songs that I have imported via Audacity from LP's.

  • Hung during upload, had to force quit - do I re-order?

Not sure of the status it hung at 27% upload status (the internet connection was and is fine).
I could not quit aperture while it said I had a book order pending so I had to force quit as there seemed to be no way out.
Now how do I re-upload? Do I have to go through the Buy Book process again? I have a valid order, how do I re-send the file?

    Question answered:
Under Help / Ordering Books and Prints in Aperture menu was a link for order status (keyed to my Apple ID). As no order was listed I went ahead and went through the "Buy Book" process again and it went through the upload fine. Followed by an e-mail confirmaion back to me.

I had to force quit my MacBook Pro because it would get stuck on spinning rainbow gear while in MS Word.  When I turn it on, I get tone, apple logo, spinning grey gear and progress bar.  Once it gets so far, it turns off.
