Trying to restore an iphone 3gs
Using itunes on a mac (10.6.8) and I keep getting an error (#2001) after clicking on the 'restore' button. I've tried multiple computers and multiple usb cables, but no change. The phone remains in recovery mode.
Any new ideas?
Did you also check the security software settings?
Check USB connections
If there’s an issue with the USB port, cable, dock, or hub, or if the device becomes disconnected during restore, try troubleshooting the USB connection, then troubleshooting your security software.
Common errors: 13, 14, 1600-1629, 1643-1650, 2000-2009, 4000, 4005, 4013, 4014, 4016, “invalid response”, and being prompted to restore again after a restore completes.
To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
Use another USB cable.
Plug your cable into a different USB port on your computer.
Try a different dock connector (or no dock).
Add (or remove) a USB hub between your device and computer.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, with no routers, hubs, or switches.
If you see your error after changing your USB connections, continue to the next section to troubleshoot your hardware.
Check for hardware issues
Try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good. Also, confirm your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers. If you still see the alert when you update or restore, contact Apple support.

I have exactly the same issue as described above : I installed the update 5.1.1 on my iphone 3GS and since then, I can not turn it on anymore. In Itunes, I get an error 37 when I am doing a restauration and it stops.
This error has nothing to do with firewall : I tried to restore the phone on several computers, including in an Apple reseller and it did not work anywhere.
I spent several hours on phone with the hotline from Apple which arrived to the conclusion that it is a hardware issue, but the phone was working perfectly fine until I installed this update! -

99.9% of the time, the cause of this issue is the fact the phone was jailbroken/hacked to unlock it for use on networks other than the network the phone was originally locked to. Apple maintains a database of officially unlocked iPhones, and when Apple's servers detect phones such as yours, activation stops & you get the message you got.
So, either get a sim card from the carrier your phone was originally locked to, or get it officially unlocked, because it appears that it was not officially unlocked. -

Somebody help!What happened when you connected your iPhone to your computer while running iTunes on your computer? You should be prompted through the restore process. If it doesn't work try getting your iPhone into Recovery Mode.

See iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart
so this basically means: turn off your firewalls, virusscanners etc, and try again -

I installed the latest security update on iphone 3gs, after that when connecting to iTunes it prompted for a software update.
When installing the software update it prompts for a complete system restore to factory settings.
Almost towards the end of the restore, iTunes promts an error 29 error and says that the iPhone cannot restore any furtherError 20, 21, 23, 26, 28, 29, 34, 36, 37, 40

HT201210 why do i get an unknown error when trying to restore my Iphone 3GS,
i was informed (by app store icon i had apps that needed to be updated ,
i said ok to the 2 updates ,
the phine then asked me (as usual) to insert my pass word
it said i had used wrong pass word and re-enter it which i did
this then set my phone to keep switching itself on and off repetedly
i tried to switch off the phone using the power button butg at first this did not work,
i then pressed reset (power button and home button, as requested in the user guide
my phone then came back on with the itunes and usb logo tgelling me to connect to itunes to do a restore ,
after the phone tries to update itself with the download
although the phone trys to reboot and use the down load it just keeps disconnecting fron my computer
and itunes come back with an error message telling me it cannot make contact with the phone
there are no other fixes on your site
so now my phone is out of warranty it is now useless
i had though of upgrading to an iphone 4S but am now thinking do i want to do that now this has happened
maybe its time to go back to android also recently bought an IPAD touch which up to now is fine
but not sure if i should keep this as ive never had this happen to me before and the phones are so expensive
my old galaxy android phone still works fine , so ive now put my sim card in there and works fine after 5 years continuous use
what would you suggest i do now
what will you do to make me stay with apple ????

Im trying to restore my iphone 3GS as i am giving it to my dad. When I hit the restore button when connected to my PC and itunes it takes me to my documents folder and asks for a filename. Can't restore my iPhone 3GS (w/iOS5); backup session failed.
I'm practically at wits end, here.
For two days I've been trying to restore my iPhone 3GS and so far, nothing.
The problem happened after I downloaded and updated my iPhone with iOS5. When I tried to restore it from one of three back-ups that I had, I ran into
that error (-50). Managed to get passed that and tried again. When I did, I get the message saying "iTunes could not restore the iPhone ****** because the backup session failed."
It doesn't just do this for my most recent back up; it does this for ALL of my back-ups. Is there any kind of fix out sure-fix for this (barring getting a new phone)?! I think I've tried several strats that I've seen in other threads and nothing has worked.
(btw, the comp that I'm using primarily is Windows Vista)*update* GOOD NEWS, EVERYONE! Turns out that I was able to restore my phone from a back up, after two days at it!
Unfortunately, the back up was from a year ago! At this point in time, I'm just glad to have my contacts back, though I feel that now would be be best to make sure I keep backing up my phone to make sure this doesn't happen again o.O -

So I just tried to restore my iPhone 3Gs for like the umteenth billion time it gets all the way to end of the factory restore and restarts well at least its supposed to. But when it shuts down to restart it never turns back on and the only way to get it to turn back on is to hold down the home and power buttons at the same time the problem is that just puts it back into restore mode ant its just frozen there ive done this about six times and the apple care on the phone has expired. what can i do? ahas anyone ever had this problem? or can somebody please tell me how to fix it? im pretty sure im not doing anything wrong i followed the instruction like it was high school test im just not sure what to do!
Sounds like a hardware failure. Bring your phone to Apple for evaluation.

I was trying to sync my iPhone 3GS and it is now stuck, saying I'm in recovery mode. I am thoroughly confused now after researching online. Bad news first and we hope for good news as well
The device is in Recovery Mode and the data has already been deleted, you need to restore the device with iTunes in order to get the iPhone back into a working state
When the iPhone is restored you can then restore it from your latest backup using iTunes or iCloud and regain some, if not all, of your data.
The good news part only happens if you had a backup.
