Trying to restore my Ipod back to Mac settings. HELP!

Hi everyone.
I just bought a 2nd gen. nano (8 gig) and registered/installed it on a mac. Everything worked fine for a couple weeks, until I was at home this weekend. I tried loading some CDs to the Ipod. I have a PC at home. So I reformatted it for a PC, and loaded about 50 songs on the Ipod "folder." (Okay - NOW I know that was a bad idea.)
Now I'm having formatting problems via mac vs. PC and just want to restore it to its original settings...
But in Itunes, it tells me that "The ipod could not be restored. The required disc could not be found."
I have my music backed up, so I just want to start all over.
Anyone have any ideas???

Make sure to turn off any background applications that might be doing something with the Nano. This would apply to things like your virus software. If you are running some, turn it off and try again. Also, make sure that the ipod is not opened as a window on the desktop.

tried to restore iphone 4 back to factory settings now on emergency call only screen? it also says hook phone up with itunes. well i have an old mac and my itunes isnt up to date and cant be installed up to date because of the old software. what do i do?

You'll need to update your system or fine a system you can use to activate it. There's no way around it.
If you can get to an Apple store and explain the situation to them, they 'may' be able to hook you up with an OS upgrade to Leopard assuming you have a G4 or G5 mac that can handle it.

Was that Apple ID and password the original owner of the iPod?  If not, try using the Apple ID and password of the original owner.

  • Does anyone know if I restore my Ipod back to factory settings, will I be able to resync everything that I have saved on my computer?

I synced my Ipod to my parents computer and now about half the apps I had don't show up on the Ipod.  They are on the computer, but I can't see them on my Ipod.  There are also pages showing on the computer than are not on the Ipod.  It's confusing.  Anyway, I want to restore it to factory settings since there are several issues I seem to be having.  If I restore it to factory settings, will I be able to sync it to my computer at home and be able to retrieve everything I have purchased and downloaded over the years since it's all saved on my home computer.

Yes.  Yu have to just ensure that the iPod is signed into the iTunes account(s) that purchased the apps and other stuff and you have iTunes et up to sync the stuff to the iPod.  You will loose however, any app data you have.
BTW, you can always redownload app at no addition cost.  See:
How to redownload purchased apps from the App Store

I tried to restore, update and back up my ipod touch. once it said it was successful i clicked on the label of my ipod in itunes and it had written, "we're sorry, we are unable to continue with your activation at this time." now whenever i click on the label it just says that and on my ipod it tells me to plug into itunes when it already is. i didnt update restore or back it up with the latest version, so i downloaded the latest version, how do i start the process again so my ipod works!! help this is gay !!

Hmm, well... iTunes trys to activate your iPod using the Apple server to make sure you have bought it legit.
Two things come into my mind:
    1) Your iTunes can't access the internet.
    2) Apples activation servers are down.
That's just my cents, maybe anyone else has an idea.

If you are unable to get the iPod into Disk Mode to try and restore it, it's a very good indication, as mentioned in the article, that the iPod's hard drive is damaged and in need of replacement either by Apple or a third party repair company.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

    To restore from backup see:

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • HT5654 Tried to restore my ipod to factory setting and now it erased everything and says their is an error (1) and the apple logo is stuck on the ipod.  EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED!!!! Would have never done this if I knew this was going to happen! itunes is upda

Tried to restore my ipod I just wanted to back to factory setting and delete everything on it.  I did it and NOW everything is erased, gone, and stuck on the apple logo.  Populated that it is in recovery mode and needs to be restored.  Clicked on restored and error (1) came up.  So now I have a useless iPod that I purchased.  Big apple user minus my laptop.  2 iPod, 2 iShuffles, iPad, 4 iPhones, iMac 27 inch.  If this isn't rectified I will never buy and continue to push my consumers, family, and friends on my bad experience with apple.  iTunes is up to date and now I am concerned that if do anything to my phone this same problem will happen.

    Hello, Marc.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Error 1 or -1 can be very tricky to resolve and sometimes leads to a device needing service.  That being said, here are the steps I would go through first for this specific error.
    Check for hardware issues
Try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good. Also, confirm your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers. If you still see the alert when you update or restore, contact Apple support.
    Common errors: 1, 10-47, 1002, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1000-1020.

I am Trying to restore my ipod 4th gen 5.1.1 but when i try to restore it in itunes "The ipod couldnt be restored, an unknow error occured (3194). what should i do?

This device is not eligible for the requested build (Also sometimes displayed as an "error 3194")
Update to the latest version of iTunes.
Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, followTroubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. Uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer.
Edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from your hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart.
Avoid using an older or modified .ipsw file. Try moving the current .ipsw file (see Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations), or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.
Unable to contact the iOS software update server gs.apple.com
Error 1004, 1013, 1638, 3194: These errors may be the result of the connection to gs.apple.com being redirected or blocked. Follow these steps to resolve these errors:
Install the latest version of iTunes.
Check security software. Ensure that communication to gs.apple.com is allowed. Follow this article for assistance with security software. iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues.
Check the hosts file. The restore will fail if there is an active entry to redirect gs.apple.com. Follow iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting to edit the hosts file or revert to a default hosts file. See section "Blocked by configuration: (Mac OS X/Windows) > Rebuild network information".
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.

I'm trying to restore an iPod touch that has been locked out and iTunes says "The iPod software update server could not be contacted.  Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later."

    Update Server
    Try:
    - Powering off and then back on your router.
    - iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
    - Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
    Public DNS — Google Developers
    OpenDNS IP Addresses
    - For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
    - Try on another computer/network
    - Wait if it is an Apple problem

    Thanks for replied me
if anyone has same problem to open their hosts file, here is a short video and you have to type "sudo nano /private/etc/hosts" ,not "sudo nano/private/etc/hosts",remember there is a space between "nano_/private"
This video helps a lot which I just found and it is much easier to fix this problem

It sounds like your PC or Mac's internal HD is full. You need to delete some data or move it to an external hard drive or storage device of some sort before you'll be able to successfully complete the restore.
