Trying to restore previous iWeb files after hard drive was reformatted.

I had to have a clean install on my MacBook last week and had my iWeb files backed up but I'm having trouble figuring out how to import the files or restore iWeb to the way it was. Any thoughts? Or is it just another lack of support and thinking on Apple's part?

No. You just need to have backed up the right files.
iWeb stores info under User/Library/Application Support/domain.sites and it is this domain.sites file that you need to be able to alter anything in iWeb.
If you published your site to a local folder thinking that was a back up, then it is not, as iWeb has no import facility and is unable to open already published html files.
If you don't have your domain.sites file then you'll have to re-build your site again in iWeb.

  • Trying to restore system onto MBP after hard drive replaced using time capsule...

The hard drive on my MBP died and was replaced. Everything had been backed up on time machine, on a time capsule.
I've been trying unsuccessfully to do a full system restore from the time capsule. first I opened up the MBP and opted to restore from time machine in the set-up, using wifi network. I got the network and 'disc' 'data' '1 time machine backup' but when I pressed continue I got a dialogue box 'opening XX macbook pro...checking volumes' for about 3 hours, then finally the message 'no volumes detected'.
Tried that a couple of times, then went through the set-up procedure and in to Migration Assistant to try again.
The same thing happens, whether throgh wifi or usb - 3 or 4 hours of 'checking volumes' then 'volumes not found'.
Shouldnt restoring from time capsule be simple and straightforward even for a non-techie like me? (I thought that was the point!)
Any pointers on how I restore my old mac onto this new drive please?
NB old system was running on Lion. Mac Store installed snow leopard onto repaired mac.

How are you starting the system? Are you booting from a DVD or starting from the new hard drive that was installed?
In your OP you never stated the drive was replaced by Apple. You just said you had a New drive.
I'm going to leave this for someone that is more familair with time capsule as I have never worked with one.

  • Trying to locate/reload my ringtones after hard drive re-imaged

My hard drive was recently re-imaged. Prior to this, I copied my entire music folder to an external hard drive.
After reinstalling iTunes, I recreated my iTunes Library, and my music was back. I also sync'd my iPhone to Outlook and was able to recreate my calendar, contacts, etc. However, my ringtones did not appear in iTunes. They were still on my phone.
I tried to transfer purchases, but the ringtones didn't transfer. Then I tried to sync it with the iPhone. (MISTAKE) and now the ringtones are gone from the iPhone.
Can I get these back somehow? Where in the library are the ringtones located? I have a few database files still on my external hard drive, and I'm hoping one of these has the ringtones I'm missing. But, I'm afraid to recreate the Library again, causing something else to be overwritten or disappear.
It's probably better to just re-create and re-pay for the ringtones since there were only 3 of them.
I also keep getting the error that the iPhone is currently sync'd to another library. (the old one from before the pc was re-imaged??)
    Thanks.

Are you referring to the serial number? If so make sure you're entering it correctly. Given the length of the serial number and the similarities between O and 0 and 1 and l it's easy to make a mistake.
See Troubleshooting Professional Application Serial Numbers and if that doesn't help try Pro Application Replacement Serial Numbers for a way to get a new number.

  • Missing iphoto files after hard drive replacement

I am working with iMac (27 inch, late 2009) running OS X Yosemite.  Run time machine to an external hard drive.
Earlier this month, the hard drive crashed and had to be replaced.  Before the hard drive crash, the computer was not using Yosemite.  The iMac's hard drive was replaced and a full time machine restore was done.  Everything was there except for all photos in ten very recent events in iPhoto.  The event is named correctly "Halloween 2014," but there is no thumbnail picture.  When I click into an event, the thumbnails for all the photos are  are gray with white dotted lines around them.  I repaired the thumbnails, and that didn't solve the problem.
I noticed in one (only one) event album, when I click into it, I can see the images at the bottom (in the teeny thumbnails) but when I click on them, I get the exclamation point in a triangle.
I have a few fairly basic questions -
    1. When looking for an original photo file in Finder, is the correct way to do it by "Showing Package Contents" when the iPhoto icon is selected in iPhoto? This is the first time I've had to dig around to make sure the actual photo is on the computer.  What is the organization default on the folders? Upload date? It doesn't make much sense to me yet.
    2. Is it worth it to even bother doing this?  Should I just either a) repair permissions, b) repair database or c) rebuild database?
    3. What do a-c even mean?
    4. If I do a-c, am I in danger of loosing photos I've uploaded since the hard drive install? I have some very precious professional family photos that I have on the computer now that I am deathly afraid of loosing.
    Thanks!

1 - best to stay out of the iPhoto library - it is very complicated and easy damaged
2 - Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - from the resulting first aid window repair permissions and if necessary rebuild your database
    3 - ?
4 - see 2 - step one is backup  the Photo libreay in case a rare prblem does cause an issue

  • Cannot restore from Time Capsule after hard drive replacement (recall)!

Hard drive was replaced on a recall from Apple. I have spent weeks on the phone with Applecare whose conclusion now is that a WD drive I had connected about a year ago (and which was disconnected and software uninstalled) has corrupted the files on the Time Capsule (?) Anyone heard of that?
I am a photographer and all my photos are there (?) The capsule appears to be quite full.
Anyways Apple won't pay for recovery since they say 3d party software caused the issue.. WHY DO THEY SELL THOSE DRIVES IN THE STORE THEN?
    Solutions anyone?

    See Pondini's <a href="http://Pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html">TM FAQs</a>, for starters.
As for why they carry 3rd-party stuff in the stores, that's to satisfy their customers desires, but they don't guarantee them to work. WD externals have s a history of being crapola w/Macs, since they're focused on windows boxes.

  • Magically Restored Files after Hard Drive Replacement? Confused...

Ok so I don't really need help, but I'm confused as to how this is possible.
Okay, so my backyard got struck by lightning a week ago. My Macbook Pro was working fine after the strike until like 2 days later when it started kernel panicking on start up and wouldn't boot OS X. Took it to the genius bar, they said they probably needed to replace the logic board. 5 days later, I go to pick it up and they said they had to replace the logic board, hard drive, superdrive, and some other cables inside. I asked if my data was lost, and they said they tried to restore it but they couldn't and recommended to go to an outside tech person to try to recover it if it was really important but didn't recommend it because it would be very expensive because they would have to essentially rebuild the hard drive. I was upset because they said they would call me if they had to replace the hard drive and I was never notified. The guy felt bad for me, so they let me keep my old hard drive instead of sending it back to apple for investigation or whatever. So I leave the Apple store, and turn on my computer to make sure it works and lo and behold all my stuff is there. I checked to make sure documents worked and all my music and photo files opened correctly.
So I am happy that I didn't lose anything, but very confused as to how a replaced hard drive contains my old data when the Apple store said they couldn't get it back. And I still don't know what is on the hard drive they gave me. I'm pretty sure they actually did the replacement because I signed a sheet stating that they did so.
So could the apple store have just been confused? i've been trying to figure it out and can't understand how all my stuff is magically back. and i don't know what to do with the hard drive that they gave me. any thoughts on my magically reappearing files?

    Hi r,
I suspect neuro is correct, but if you're still curious, one more thing you could do is purchase a connector or enclosure for the HD they said is your old one, and see if it will mount when connected to another Mac. If so, open it and check it out to see if it really is.

  • Restoring picture and movie files after hard drive failure and repair

I need some help restoring photo/movie files from my external hard drives after my iBook was repaired following a storm. I have backups hidden all over my external hard drives. I have unburned burn folders that may have pictures on them. I was using iPhoto from iLife 05 and iLife 08, and Kodak Easy Share. I have searched on spotlight using ".jpg", "pics", and ".mov" and titles of various images, but I am still missing images that I am fairly sure I duplicated to external hard drives. Any ideas for searching?

Thanks, I just downloaded EasyFind. I ran an initial search and it looked very effective. I will have to manually check the search results to see if it is getting any files I haven't already been able to find.

  • Restoring iTunes files after hard drive problems

    HI.
I recently had hard drive problems and since the recovery of the data I have lost all my files from iTunes. The sogs I have put on to the Mac via CD's are all still there but all the iTunes downloads have disapeared. This is probably because I didn't back up!
I also have numerous duplications, which I eventually removed from itunes but I know the majority of which will return if I drag my music folder across.
This will be a hige taks again to remove the duplications.
I want to use this unfortunate incident to my advantage though and now have a clear out of my unwanted files and keep my iTunes nicely organised.
I also lost my playlists, which is a major pain.
By looking at the support threads it seems that I can use my ipod to put my library back as it should be. Will this also replace my downloaded songs? My other issue is that some of my iTunes downloads, downloaded with some problems, which are obviously on my ipod. How do I go about getting the songs repaired?
    Thanks for any help.

I imagine if the files exist on the ipod you can get them transferred over. if they don't exist, they are gone.
As for the corrupt files you would need to provide more information on the issues.

  • How to restore playlists and ratings after hard drive format

Several people have reported problems restoring paylists and ratings after reformating a hard drive. Here is what worked for me and what did not.
I had to reformat my hard drive. Before doing that I exported my playlists from itunes to another hard drive as an xml file. I also copied the folder with all my songs to another drive. (Also of course had it backed up on DVDs.)Then I copied the itunes library files (see url http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93732) to anoher drive.
After reformating my hard drive and installing the lastest verion of ITunes, I copied the actual songs back into a subfolder in my music folder. I then told iTunes to import the subfolder with the actual music. That resulted in a restored library that lacked playlists and ratings.
    Don't do this
I purchased Anapod ($30.00) because its web page said (http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/):
"Anapod CopyGear is an easy-to-use, compact utility for copying music tracks, playlists, podcasts, photos, and videos from your iPod back to your PC."
Well, I did transfer 104 playlists back to my iTunes library through the Anapod backup function. However, the transfer also put more than 20 gigs of duplicate songs into the library. All of the songs listed in the playlists were duplicated in iTunes. I could find no way in Anapod to simply copy the ratings and the playlists. Anapod documentation was outdated. For example the online help pages said that playlists could not be backed up. This was confusing because I had just done that.
"In a future release we will be adding the ability to backup your iPod playlists. This will allow you to generate backup files of your iPod playlists on the computer. These files will not be usable on your computer though. They can only be used to restore playlists at a later time on your iPod (assuming it still carries all the audio files referred to in that playlist)." This text is from url http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/support/tome/tx2pc.php#5.1.2
I sent requests to Anapod for help today, but they have not been answered yet. Docs truly did not seem to help. Would have been good if there was a pdf file rather than just an online help html file that seemed outdated.
    This worked for me:
I ended up having iTunes wipe out the entire library because of all the dups Anapod made. (Made sure that iTunes only wiped out library and did not delete actual songs from hard drive. Then I had iTunes import my subfolder with songs again. That brought me back to where I was before wasting money and much time on Anapod.
After I had my iTunes library up (without ratings and playlists and after finding Anapod did not meet my needs.
    1. I imported the xml file to which I had exported playlists before reformating hard drive. That gave me the playlists back although an error message said some items not copied because the music tracks listed in playlists were not in my iTunes library. --Possibly I deleted songs after playlists were downloaded some time ago to iPod. Importing the xml file is probably not necessary because of what I did below.
    2. Quit iTunes
    3. Because my song ratings were still missing, I then moved the iTunes library files made by the new version of iTunes into a different folder.
    4. Then I put my old version 4 library files into the place where the library files should be.
    5. Then I crossed my fingers and restarted iTunes. It took awhile to start and said it was updating my library files. Now I have back most or all of my playlists and ratings.
If problems develop, I will probably wipe out iTunes library and use Anapod to move everything from my iPod into a folder and tell iTunes to import that folder. That approach might avoid the dups that Anapod makes when restoring playlists to iTunes.
So my message is keep your actual songs backed up somewhere (such as DVD's and anotehr hard drive) and keep a duplicate copy of your library files somewhere not on your hard drive. With these items you should be able to restore iTunes library to its former status.
Sorry for the length of this message. Hope it helps someone.

    The simple version of above:
iTunes Files to Backup (anytime you make additions or changes to the Music or Library that you want to retain)
    1) All music files in their current folder structure (usually located in and under the ‘iTunes Music’ folder)
    2) The Library database file: ‘iTunes Library.itl’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    3) The Library XML file: ‘iTunes Music Library.xml’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    4) Any XML playlist files created for Playlist retention
    5) The two iTunes.pref files (optional)
    -- C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    -- C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer Inc\iTunes.pref
    6) The XML file of Ratings, Play Counts and Last Played attributes saved from the main Library and created by Otto’s SaveRatings script (also optional, but recommended):
“Download this: http://ottodestruct.com/itunes/SaveRatings.zip . It's a program, just run it like any other program. Run it on the machine where you're copying the info from BEFORE you move the files to the new machine. Click the "Save Ratings" button and it'll create a ratings.xml file. Now when you move the files, move the program and this file as well. Then after you make your new iTunes library, run it again and click the "Restore Ratings" button. Voila, all your information is back in the Library. Well, most of it anyway, it's not perfect. It'll tell you what songs it couldn't figure out though, and there's usually not very many.”

  • Restore saved iPhoto library after hard drive repair

My hard drive crashed and Apple were kind enough to repair it although it happened 1 week after the extended warranty expired. I was able to save the hard drive files to an external drive just before it died, but now when I try and import the iPhoto library back into the newly repaired computer one of 2 things happen: The photos begin to transfer and then the application (iPhoto) unexpectedly quits, or, the blue bar at the bottom says Working and nothing happens for as long as 10 minutes.
I would really appreciate some help as I no longer have covered support. One of the photo text files may be corrupted. How do I identify the problem file?
    Thanks very much,
    Colin Sieff

That's because importing from another iPhoto Library folder isn't the way to restore an iPhoto Library. I'm surprised you were able to do it without a bunch of warning dialogs.
If you still have the original iPhoto Library folder intact, the thing to do is restore it as I've described earlier. If you have sufficient disk space, quit iPhoto and drag the existing iPhoto Library folder from Pictures to the desktop. Then drag your backup iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, and the only thing left to do is to start iPhoto. If all's well, move the desktop copy of the iPhoto Library folder to the trash, then empty the trash.

  • Full Restore from Time Capsule after hard drive failure

Authorized agent replaced hard drive after it failed. Installed 10.5.5 and currently attempting to do a full restore from Time Capsule - progress is slow and in question after 22 hours. The backup size approx. 100 gb.
Screen reads "Transferring Information" at the top, progress bar is moving, and bottom of the screen reads "Looking for applications and documents to transfer" and hasn't changed for 22 hours.
Is this normal? how long should 100 gb take to restore?

think about the speed of wifi here
speed at 802.11n = a theoretical 540Mbps (less in real world scenarios)
Mbps = Mega bits per second
MBps - Mega bytes per second
    8 bits = 1 byte
    8 mega bits = 1 mega byte
How long would it take you to download a 1 gig file from the internet wired into your modem? About 10-20 min? And that is taking into account that the info is being uploaded hardwire. Now imagine that same file over wireless in your home being upload by the Airport card in your computer. People over look upload speed when considering these things. The wireless upload speed of your Airport card is what is limiting this. Just a limitation of the technology, not a fault of Apple just stating the numbers here.

  • Can I recover lost library from Windows backup file after hard drive crash?

I'm sure this has been visited before, so I'm sorry if this is redundent.
My daughters Windows notebook had to be reformatted because of a severe virus. I had all important files including iTunes songs backed up onto portable Hard Drive. Got her notebook up and running and then restored her songs back to her computer (but not into the original location). Plugged in her iPod Mini and now it shows no files at all on the Mini and iTunes will not access or recognize the songs that I restored
Prior to the restoring she was able to listen to her complete music collection on the iPod Mini.
I still have access to the backup files either on the Hard Drive or in a separate folder from which I restored the first time. Should I completely erase the songs from the notebook now and then access the backup file?
And how do I get the Mini and iTunes to recognize the music once and for all?
Thanks for any advice, help, and suggestions.
    Tony
HP Pavilian Notebook   Windows XP   iPod Mini.

What you will do depends on if you have the "iTUnes Music Library.xml" file on backup. By default this file is stored on
    C (Or the drive windows is on)/documents and settings/............/My Documents/My Music/iTunes
If you DO have this file on backup, then you will have to set all the music to its EXACT location it was before reformatting
