Trying to restore settings/apps from iPhone GS to 4S

Backed up old iPhone GS to computer. After registering new phone, "Restore from backup" doesn't come up as option for 4S phone. How to load old settings/ringtones/apps from old phone to new?

What, exactly, do you mean by that? Did you set the phone up as "new" initially? If so, that's why you no longer have the option of restoring your 3GS backup to your 4S. If you want to do so, you'll have to start over. On the 4S: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. Once done you should now have the option to restore your 3GS backup to your 4S.

Ok, I need serious help here. My husband had a iPhone 3 that he hadn't updated in ages and then I bought him an iPhone 4 and we simply plugged that into the computer (the iPhone 4) and voila NOTHING transferred over. The iPhone is designed to be synced with a computer on a regular basis.
If this is done, all content that is on the device will be on the computer it syncs with.
Simply plug in the new iPhone and manage what syncs to it.

I'm sorry to hear that your iPhone 4s was lost, and glad that you were able to upgrade.
If your iPhone 4s was backed up to iCloud or using iTunes, you can restore the backed up data to your new phone.

My Iphone 4 crashed and I lost my entire contact list. I restored it to original factory settings but in trying to restore my data from my laptop via Itunes.. this was the feedback: Itunes could not restore the Iphone Dr Johnny Siu Chong because the Iphone refused the request.
I cannot get help from Apple support because i am being asked to supply the serial number which is stored on the phone and I cannot restore my data in the first place. I am reluctant to "Set up as a new Iphone" since I don't know whether if I do I may not then be able to access my data from Itunes...
Please advise what to do. I did not see any tutorials on Youtube to help me with this.
I look forward to an early response.

If you resintall iTunes, it should fix the issue. The following document will go over how to remove iTunes fully and then reinstall. Depending on what version of Windows you're running you'll either follow the directions here:

When you have access to your iPhone again, FaceTime is a pre installed app that cannot be removed.

I am not sure whether the music will get restored.
Anyway try this
1.Connect iPhone to PC.
2.Open iTunes
3.Open iPhone Summary
4.Go to Apps Tab
5.Under File Sharing Section Click on Music Downloader
6.Right side if you see your songs click on one song and press (CTRL + A).(hope you are using windows) and click on save and then save to a folder on your computer.
7. Later just do steps till 5 to put to new iPhone then ...........
8.Click on save and select the music files which u want to put in that app.
9.Click on apply to sync.
10.You should be having the music in that app

Apple states that it keeps your last 3 iCloud backups, which would only go back a few days if you back up daily. Also, apps are not stored in the backup, only your app data is. The backup simply notes which apps were on your phone when it was backed up, then downloads them from the App store when you restore the backup. If the app is no longer available in the App store, it will not be restored to the phone when you restore the backup.

Oh my gosh I had the EXACT same problem, and for ages I couldn't figure out how to fix it until today. Here's what I did:
First I went onto my computer, opened itunes, and un-installed tumblr, vine and kik. These were the apps I was having problems with (it said I had them on my phone but, like you, they didn't show).
Then I went to the itunes store, searched for each one, and it said I could update them so I did (just FYI: for tumblr a window popped up saying "please click ok to confirm you are 17 years or older", so I did that also)
When I went back to my phone and tried installing them again (still on my computer), it worked!

This phone was new. And it was sealed from the box that was closed. And the backup was on my laptop. And this icloud account was saved by mistake on my laptop.

I have the same issue and I KNOW my backup IS good. What happen is when you try to restore your phone apple says something like can I check for new updates and if you choose no, it just takes you back to the restore screen and a loop from then on. If you dont update from you phone then when you back up you will have the 5.0.1 back up and then when you update to 5.1.1 and then try to restore the backup from 5.0.1 it say it EITHER corrupt or incompatible.. It is incompatible and its hard as **** to restore back to 5.0.1. I followed the restore to a T and still getting errors. I lost all text history and have to reset up email. I have tried to restore my contacts and company data at least 20 times and every time half way through THE iPAD REBOOTS! When it boots back up it is at the brand new iPad screen.
This makes me angry as I do not use the iPad for fun and games. I use it for business. My company data and records for the last year are gone. ALL of my out standing customer invoices are gone. Yes! I have done everything. Rebooted computer, checked for updates, Hard booted iPad, Factory restored iPad to ios 5 twice, tried every usb port I have, unplugged all other usb components.
Everytime half way through "Restoring iPad from backup..." The iPad turns off shows a spinning circle then shows the Apple logo and takes me to the brand new iPad setup screen.
Apple, you have no idea the level of stress you have created today.....

Check the console app to see if there are any error messages. I had one app showing an issue (Pet Hotel) the error was (truncated):

I manually snyc'ed that particular app and then re-ran the restore and am now the proud owner of a working iphone. Not sure it is the same problem or app but looking in the console was the key!

Do a backup of your 4, either to the cloud or your computer, depending on how you usually do this.
If you backed up your 4 to the computer, connect the new phone to the computer at this point, if you restored it to the cloud, do NOT connect it to the computer (or you might get an old backup by mistake). Just connect it to a charger.
When you first power up your new phone, it will ask you whether you want do configure it as a new phone or to restore it from a backup. Select "from a backup". The prodedure is slightly different for computer and iCloud backups, but you'll be able to figure it out.
This will restore all your apps, settings, and camera roll. Then you can either sync it to the computer or redownload your music and movies (depending on how you manage these things).
Once this is done, you can delete everything you don't want from the old phone.
