Trying to retrieve old emails

I'm now faced with a court case and am desperately trying to find out if I can get a hold of my old emails that I've both sent and received. They have been deleted but I'm hoping someone knows how to find out if they have "really" been deleted or are they just hiding somewhere. Please help if you can!!!

"Since it was on their mail server, they had a copy. But again, there is no guarantee of how long they keep the copy"
SMTP servers only transfer mail and the "copy" remains in queue only as long as needed to pass it on to its destination. When served with court orders, ISPs can intercept and forward copies of messages to the appropriate law enforcement agency. (We use the same process to capture outgoing mail from our company for compliance reasons). But based on discussions with some email admins that work for ISPs, I "know" from support forums, it isn't standard practice in the industry to do this for all mail.
Earlier in the year I read that most ISPs were refusing the governments requests that they voluntarily keep copies of everything moving across their servers due to the massive storage requirements that would be needed. But that may have changed.
I agree that it's worth asking the ISP if they have a copies of the needed messages. But if the ISP in question only offers POP accounts, I'd bet good money they never had one.

My phone keeps trying to load 2000 old emails (that have been deleted from my computer).  How do I get it to stop?

Your profile says you have a PC so you may have to search the web to find out how to delete emails from the server using whatever email client you have (Outlook perhaps) and how to set it so that when you "delete" mail on your computer it deletes it from the server too.  You may have to log into your email via your email provider's webmail system to delete these old messages from the server.  Hard to say for sure.

  • Retrieving old email

A high school friend was wondering why I never responded to his emails. I switched from Comcast to Verizon  2 years ago and he was still sending email to my Comcast account. Is there any way to retrieve these old messages from the  Comcast account? My friend sent me a screen shot and I saw he has indeed been sending email to my Comcast account all along. None of these messages were returned to him as undeliverable. My last email from him was dated February 2011.

You need to contact Comcast customer service. The only way you will get those messages is if Comcast has them archived and is willing to retrieve and forward them to you ...
Agree completely with Walt's suggestion, and Google is a good choice (although privacy issues may concern some users).  Many experienced users prefer to completely avoid the webmail services of their ISPs for reasons like yours.
Regarding Comcast, I closed my account there well over 18 months ago, but I just took another look and I am still able to sign in to my old Comcast services, including my old email accounts.  Perhaps you will get lucky and be able to fetch your old mail or even set up mail forwarding to your new address.

  • Mail suddenly retrieves old emails from IMAP

    Hello,
Dunno why but sometimes Mail starts to retrieve IMAP msgs that are 1-2 years old... how can I fix this?
    Thanks in advance!

I see similar results if I go anywhere near the 'Get Mail' button - I may receive hundreds of old, read, and/or deleted emails. I've learned to never use 'Get Mail'= - if I don't use that, all seems to be relatively well.

  • Trying to retrieve old mail from back-up after reformating hard drive

I actually posted this question yesterday, but I think I put it on the wrong forum, so I'll try again.
My hard disk became corrupted and I had to reformat it and re-install my system software. I had everything backed up on an external hard disk, but I can't figure out how to get my mail, addresses, keycaps, etc, back onto the new installation. Can anyone help?
I didn't use any kind of utility to back things up; I simply copied my entire internal hard drive to an external hard drive.
I tried copying the library folder from my user folder that I backed up to the new instalation, but that didn't seem to do anything. I still didn't have any of my saved email or addresses.

A drag copy doesn't work like you'd expect, but well see...

  • IPad retrieving old email messages

After working well, my iPad has decided to download all 15000 email messages from my ISP server. This is an iPad 1 running IOS 5.
What's going to happen when it runs out of space?
    How can I stop this?
What could cause it to suddenly start this?
I cannot set it to delete messages from the server when downloading, because two other computers are also retrieving email from the same account.

If you go to Settings->Mail,contacts,Calendars->choose your exchange account. There should be an option somewhere on how many days to sync. Set this to how far back you want the emails to be stored on your iPad/iPhone.

  • Trying to retrieve old project with no luck

I made a short movie (2 minutes) in iMovie last month, shared it to the Media Browser and then did the final production in iDVD. I burned a few discs and all was well. In order to free up space, I moved the project from iMovie to an external disc. (I did, however, leave all the unedited clips in the Event Library.)
So now I want to make a small change--I wanted to change the music that plays as soon as the disc starts, and I wanted to change the picture theme there. Since I had already published the project to iDVD, I figured it would still be there--in iDVD--even though I had taken it out of iMovie and put in on the external disc.
No such luck. It no longer exists in iDVD (though the events are there). I retrieved the project from the external drive, but am not sure what to do with it now. When I click on the "iDVD project" file that supposedly contain my movie, I get an error message saying "The following files could not be found:" and then it gives a very long code ending in Video, and another ending in Audio.
I'm hoping that somehow I can re-import the Project back to iMovie, or somehow share it with browser again. Anything but do the movie all over again. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hello, James,
An iDVD project should be thought of as a container of 'aliases' or pointers to the media files used in the project. The project does not actually contain those files. Simply, when you open an iDVD project, use it or burn it, iDVD goes to the actual media locations and lets you edit for the project, or it encodes the media data for burning.
If you move, rename, change or delete ANY of the files used in the project, iDVD cannot locate them. Even if you put everything back where it was, iDVD sometimes still cannot locate the files. You can locate them manually if iDVD asks for them. When you get that 'long code ending in Video' and you know which video file that is, presumably the iMovie that is now on your external drive, you can direct iDVD to it. Same for that audio file.
If you cannot do that, or if you try and it does not work for this project, you will need to recreate the project by making a new iDVD project.
Also, although you can edit an iDVD project if you have not changed any of the media files, if you make any changes in a movie used in the file....even just correcting a typo in a title, iDVD will not burn the movie properly, even though you may receive the message that iDVD detected that 'assets' have been changed and asks if you want to update. There is a bug in iDVD8/9 that causes the burn to be incorrect, especially if you have chapter markers. The only time I was able to make a correction in my movie and have it play properly was a change I made in the last frame of the movie.
If you would like to save your iDVD projects for re-editing, you need to save them as Archive projects so that all the media is saved as well.
If you just want to keep the iDVD project intact for future burning without doing more editing, it is recommended that you do a 'save as disk image' from within the iDVD project. This results in a disk image file that has all the media encoded within it, so that now if you rename, move, change or delete any media from the project, you will still have the ability to burn more DVD disks from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

  • Migrated to new iMac - how to retrieve old non-Mac mail?

I have been using an old MacBook Pro, but recently bought a new iMac. I used the me.com iSync (I think that's what it is called) to sync my Mail accounts to me.com, and then to sync with the new iMac. The Mac mail came over just fine ([email protected]) but I had several other accounts set up in Mail on the MBP - Yahoo, a few Gmail accounts, my web site's accounts, etc. None of the email messages came over. I get new emails on my iMac to these non-Mac accounts, but I would like to transfer over the old ones as well. I have tried to click "Get Mail" but it looks like this just gets new mail.
Is there a way on my iMac in Mail to retrieve old emails (including Sent emails) from non-Mac accounts? I keep having to go back to my MBP to find/reference old emails.

Reference Kappy's advice in method 1. I think this would do it for you.

  • Finding old emails in the Finder

    Hi, there,
My iMac is used for my business, so I keep (one can call it archive) many important emails in their specific folders, some emails are 4-5 years old.
I'm wondering what is the system, or logic, based on how the operating system is keeping emails in the Finder... Of course, one can retrieve old emails (that were not trashed) thru Apple’s Mail itself, but the reason for asking is, I backup some of those mailboxes, the important stuff, as part of my routine nightly backup, and in case of emergency, I may need to sort them out manually thru the Finder (am I right?)...
    My questions:
    1.  For some odd reason I have TWO places where my Mac stores those emails: in my (User>Mail>V2> Mailboxes>specific mailbox) folder, and also in my (User>Library>Mail>V2> Mailboxes>specific mailbox) folder...   Is that normal?  The V2 folder in my User folder is 14 GB, while the V2 in the User>Library is 19 GB. I’m not even sure now WHICH of those 2 folders my backup software is archiving...
    2.  Every mailbox has a folder with a long name starting with CECD2235-.... and inside there are bunch of folder named with single digits, and inside each a “Messages” folder with the emails.  But there’s no logic how the system is sorting those folders, the emails are all over the place.... I sure can’t find an email based on the date it was received...
    3.  One of the annoying things in the Finder is, once I open a folder the “modification date” immediately changes to THE MINUTE IT WAS OPENED, so in the future I can’t rely on sorting those folders by dates...
Some education here would be appreciated...

    Thanks, Eric...
    1.  So should I just DELETE that MAIL folder I have in my user folder?
    2.  Of course, I can sort any folder items in the Finder by name, date modified, size, etc., BUT as we all know so well, the OS has not been very good in sorting the CONTENT of a folder, especially with several nested folders down, depicting the TRUE date of modification of the LATEST file inside.... So here, the latest example, I'm opening now a folder whose modification date shows Jan. 27, 2015, but inside there are files (nested in a sub-folder) with mod. date of Jan. 29...
    3.  Normal, but ANNOYING... I guess no way to tell my Mac to stop this behavior, right?  It makes little sense...
