Trying to set autologoin crashes system preferences

When i go into the users sys prefs and set auto login and choose a user it locks for a bit and then says that sys prefs has crashed. Any ideas? This is a clean install.
System is attached to a windows 2008 r2 server domain but I don't think that makes the difference.

Do a backup.
Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
You'll probably have to reset some of your preferences.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
You might need to redo the View settings after an update.

  • Just installed 10.6.4. Now clicking on Print&Fax crashes system preferences

    Hi all,
Just installed Snow Leopard 10.6.4 and then couldn't print from my Kodak EasyShare 5300 printer. I installed updated software and firmware from Kodak. Still can't print and when I click on Print & Fax in system preferences it crashes system preferences. (Other system preferences options don't make it crash.)
I've repaired permissions and I've unplugged USB and power to printer and replugged and restarted computer and still no luck.
Help! Thanks so much, guys. You're an awesome bunch of folks who have been so helpful in the past. Hoping you can advise me here.

Tried that and it still crashed System Preferences when I clicked on Printer&Fax. But thanks for replying! Still looking for solutions. I know it's tough when I'm asking at the start of a holiday weekend!

  • Screensaver crashing system preferences!

I recently (and yes, somewhat belatedly) discovered the amazing 'mosaic' option in the built-in iPhoto screensaver. However, after initially working, it has now stopped working (after I switched the screensaver off altogether for a couple of days) and is crashing System Preferences whenever selected. I have to force quit the System Preferences app and select another screensaver. Does anyone have any ideas? Perhaps its photo cache file has become corrupted??

The following files are all modified when I selected the screensaver pane, and then set it to use the mosaic effect on a folder of images:
    /Users/francine/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/francine/Library/Preferences/com.apple.preference.desktopscreeneffect.pli st
    /Users/francine/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iphotomosaic.plist
    /Users/francine/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.slideshow.0017f 20dca84.plist
    /Users/francine/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache
    /Users/francine/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
    There is a Cache.db in
    /Users/francine/Library/Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
But I believe that only caches Desktop images, not stuff in the screensaver.

If you came from 10.6, 10.7/10.8 will no longer run PPC based programs.
First run through this list of fixes, then reinstall all your programs from fresh sources for 10.8 compatability

  • Time machine restore crashed system preferences

Hi, just hoping someone can help with the following as my MacBook is not a happy bunny. I recently reformatted my hdd and restored my system using Time machine. This was to allow me to create a new partition so I could run bootcamp. All was fine for a few weeks, buy I have noticed recently that system preferences has become unreliable and fails to load on most occasions, freezing in the process - it shows in the dock, but does not load. I have OSX snow leopard all updates, two user accounts, guest activated. I have repaired disk permissions a number of times - sometimes works for a very limited time, other times not. I have deleted the finder and systempreferences .plist files in both user accounts, emptied trash and restarted, again limited effectiveness. When the sys prefs crashes, i force quit it, then it tends to load fine next time, but 2 mins later its up to its old tricks. On top of this, the Mac is now refusing to shut down - it will get to the spinning wheel phase then nothing, I have to force shutdown by holding the power button.
I've also tried disabling the guest account, but no luck.
Any ideas gratefully received as I'm worried that jts all going crash soon !
    Many thanks

  • ICloud crashing system preferences

Installed the 10.7.2 update this morning on both my iMac (Mid 2007) and MacBook (Late 2008) and everytime I try to open the iCloud preference pane it crashes. Activity monitor shows system prefrences is using loads of CPU and memory resources and then usually comes up as not responding.
This sometimes happens on the Mail Contacts and Calendars preference pane as well. All other preference panes are ok, sometimes a little slow but still work.
I have created a test account on my MacBook and it will load all system preferences fine including iCloud. I did a clean install of Lion about a week ago on both MacBook and iMac and migrated only Users, Documents and Applications. Did not tick the settings option.
Can anyway help me with this issue. Many thanks.

    Fixed for me....
after getting a new computer, i used time machine to restore my most recent backup.  (from yosemite 10.10.2)
clicked iCloud in system prefs and i just hang.  everything else about the restore seemed to work great.
i read on another forum... (http://gotoanswer.stanford.edu/?q=could+not+load+iCloud+preference+pane+and+coul d+not+load+internet+accounts+preference+…) that i had to do with a permissions error, in my case the "address book" folder in library was set to read only.  so i removed the folder (to the desktop) rebooted, and problem solved.  i could click pref panes iCloud and it was no longer stuck.
if other people are having the problem, it may be a permissions error in some other folder.

  • ICloud Mail not setting up via System Preferences

I mistakenly deleted my iCloud mailbox from Mac Mail (was trying to delete another Exchange one I was having problems with) and now when I go into System Preferences and re-tick the Mail option within the iCloud Preference Pane I get the following:
iCloud Mail couldn't be enabled from the iCloud Preference Pane.
Open Mail and add your iCloud account from Mail preferences.
I have multiple folders within this account however and when I re-add through Mail they do not show up in the sidebar like they would have when it was automatically set up through main System Preferences. I would also prefer it to be done this way as that's how it's been designed and the fact it's not allowing me to do it almost suggests an issue.
Can anyone help? I've deleted my Mail preference files but it doesn't seem to have fixed anything.

Is it an @me or @icloud.com address you've setup manually in your mail.app?  The account you've added should be the one that was setup when you checked the 'mail' option in the icloud preferences for the first time.  Unless you're a former MobileMe user, then it'll be that @me.com address.
For a test, I removed my icloud email (through sys pref >> icloud) and added it manually using the icloud email settings ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864 ).  My user created test mailbox was returned.
    ---- edit
I just messed with it a bit more, and did find an instance where my user created mailbox did not return.  Quitting mail.app and reopening fixed it, though.  Make sure you to quit it, and not just click the red x.

  • With 10.2 I can only use system speaker output for audio, NOT my RME FF400 I used previously. The FF400 works fine with other apps. How can I set this device in FCP 10.2? (it is set in both system preferences and midi)

With 10.2 I can only use a system (e.g. speaker) output for audio, NOT my RME FF400 I used without any problems previously. The FF400 works fine with other apps (some like TwistedWave) setup in the program, and others (like Spotify) using system preferences & audio midi setup. How can I set the FF400 to be the sound output device in FCP 10.2? N.B. The FF400 is set as sound output device in both system preferences and audio midi setup.

From the fcp.co forum. See if this does anything for you.

I have the solution! Well it at least worked for me. This is the response I got from Apple, Can you please try the following steps towards fixing your audio issue, and report back with your results?
    1. Open the application Audio Midi Setup (located in Applications : Utilities)
    2. Select the Output Tab for the current output device
    3. Select the Configure Speakers option
    4. Select the Multichannel tab
    5. Change the setting to Stereo Now mine was set to stereo but the left channel wasn't showing left. re-clicking on stereo reloaded the settings and after clicking apply it worked.

  • Creating Guest Account Crashes System Preferences

I recently replaced an old mac mini G4 with the newest low end mac mini, the 1.83ghz core 2 duo with combo drive model.
I restored everything to the new machine with my time machine backup. Unfortunately, the guest account didn't get restored, and when I try to enable the guest account, System preferences crashes, so in order to do anything I have to force quit system prefs. After force quitting system prefs, I am unable to open applications using the dock. I have to reboot the computer in order to get anything to work again, but somehow enabling the guest account just wont work, and always crashes.
What can I do to fix this?

It happened to me also, on my imac and my MacBook Air.
It seems that user account migration somehow confuses the "guest user" machinery, which totally trashes securityd which dies of sudden death and from then on nothing works on the computer.
The solution is to do the following in System Preferences:
    0. Your system guest account must be disabled (it already is if you have the described symptoms).
    1. Create new standard account with name "guest" and short name "guest".
IMPORTANT: short name must be "guest" - OS will suggest "guest1", but you must edit that into "guest".
    2. Enable system guest account in System Preferences (check the "Allow guests to log into this computer" switch). It will work now that "guest" name is taken.
This action will create user account with short name "guest1" with all the properties of guest (clean-up after logout etc.).
    3. Completely delete standard user "guest", which you created in step 1 (check "delete all data and folder now").
    4. Disable system guest account (uncheck the switch).
    5. Right-click on system guest account icon and choose "Advanced" or whatever (there is only one menu item anyway) and change short name from "guest1" to "guest".
    6. Enable system guest account.
Voila. You now have working guest account (well, I have it, and hopefully you will, too)...
P.S. I am not sure whether you need to log-in/out/restart between steps. I remember I did some of that dance, but probably it is not necessary...

  • Cannot use iPhoto library to set background in System Preferences

I'm unable to set any photos from my iPhoto library as a desktop background using System Preferences. When I select a photo, it appears in the little preview window, but the desktop itself just turns blue.
The Choose Folder option works fine, and I can also set a new background picture from within iPhoto. Any idea why System Preferences can't properly access the iPhoto library?
    Thanks!

I'm having the exact same problem!!

  • Input Sources Crashes System Preferences

    I have two issues:
    1) When trying to open Input Sources through 'System Preferences >> Keyboard >> Input Sources' I get a pop-up window saying 'System Preferences quit unexpectedly'...
    2) Also - and I suspect this is a related issue - my menu bar keeps constantly blinking/flickering so that I am unable to select anything, nor use Spotlight. I have a feeling that Input Sources & Keyboards are causing the Menu Bar to blink/flicker but I can't try disable them due to my first issue
This is a recent issue that started ever since I started exploring a few new apps to customise my keyboard; namely KeyRemap4Macbook and DoubleCommand. I have also been using Ukelele to create custom keyboard layouts but the issues only started after installing DoubleCommand and KeyRemap...
Any help and solutions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Zano.

Thank you for the swift response.
    Update:
Not that it will affect much, but I forgot to mention that I had already uninstalled KeyRemap and DoubleCommand by the time I posted my message.
'Safebooting' didn't work (I had already tried but just tried again now).
Attempting to re-install Mavericks according to the link you gave me returned a message saying "Could not find installation information for this machine..."
I'm gonna try re-installing it using a .dmg file I was given when I had my machine repaired (it's been through a lot!).
    Will update again soon.
    Thanks,
    Z.

  • Mountain Lion crashes system preferences using Prism sound Orpheus?

    Hi I have a

Sorry, the "correct Answer" isnt correct! But the Problem seems to be solved!!!!
The solution seems to be a collection of a few actions, i read about here and on other sources. May be, one of the following was the the real single solution :
    1) repair of the access rights with Apples harddisk program
    2) deleting of all the local- user- and other caches with "yasu" (http://jimmitchell.org/yasu/)
    3) spec. manual deletion inside a terminal (was unable to locate by new finder ???)
              ˜/Library/Preferences /com.apple.systempreferences.plist
              ˜/Library/Preferences/By Host/com.apple.systempreferences.xxx.plist
              ˜/Library/Preferences/By Host/com.apple.PrefPane.Network.xxx.plist
              ˜/Library/Preferences / com.apple.finder.plist
              ˜/Library/Preferences / com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    and at least
              ˜/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
May be, this last deletion did the job. After that "system preferences" works well and without crash anymore since yet. Also the curious delay while booting was away. Booting and spec. th shut down are now realy fast, very fast!!!
    Hope, it helps

    10.5.2 , FCP 6.0, 8 core mac pro

In examining all the issues you have had and all the advice given, I strongly suggest to install Leopard and updates and FCS2 and updates on an internal new drive in your MacPro, and then use that as a boot drive.
These are bugs you are posting about; they are the results of a skewed install procedure in my and many others' opinions.
    good luck

  • Is there a command which I can use to dump all the configurations as I set out in System Preferences on the Server?

    Hi folks,
I am planning to reinstall OS X 10.6 on my Mac Server.  As such I need to collect all the configurations like User Account, User Password, File Sharing... which all are previously setup in the System Preferences.
Instead of writing them down on paper, is there a command which I can execute to dump all these data to a file so that I can refer to them easily?

I support Mac OS X Server at some schools, so I run it as a Home Server.
I do not understand your question.
Server is a package of additions that runs with Mac OS X as if it were part of the Operating System (login is not required for Server components to start up). It is not a wildly different Operating System. There is even an Installer package that allows you to ADD the server componets to an already-installed Mac OS X
User information such as Preferences are stored in a /Users/<user_name>.
This does not change after you install Server, but you can move the Users folder elsewhere, or you can move the Users accounts to an Open Directory database.
