Trying to set-up my time capsule. Airport utility unable to scan

Hello!
Would a kind soul please be genorous enough to alert me to what I may be doing wrong?
I am not technically savvy but aspire to be and when I can't seem to do the simplest of tasks it makes me what to nash my teeth and beat my forehead to a bloody pulp while repeating "stupid, stupid" ad nausem.
ANYWAY, work wirelessly and have my time capsule pulled in with green light glowing BUT when I try to configure time machine, Airport Utility comes back with the message that it was unable to find any Airport wireless devices. I rescan and rescan to no avail.
PLEASE any advice might just save me from slipping over the brink into insanity.
MANY THANKS!

What OS are you running on the computer??
I recommend you connect the TC directly to a computer via ethernet.. No other connections and turn wireless off.. if Airport Utility cannot find the TC press the reset button for around 10-15sec until it begins flashing rapidly.. then try the setup again. Once you have the setup running properly using manual setup, go to the wireless settings and manually set everything.. wireless name.. no spaces, no special characters, give a different name to 5ghz so you can connect to either.. set 2.4ghz to one of the three available channels, 1, 6, 11 (unless you live outside USA where 12, 13 are also allowed). The rest overlap so don't bother. Set also manual channel for 5ghz. Make sure you set wpa2 personal security again with pure alphanumeric password, no spaces.
Then see if wireless will connect.. but do the first backup by ethernet anyway.
This doesn't apply if you only have MBA which doesn't have ethernet.

You need to be running at least the Lion (10.7.5) operating system or higher on your Mac, or using an iPhone or iPad with AirPort Utility installed on the device to set up the Time Capsule.
Check the System Requirements for the Time Capsule to confirm.
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3 or higher

Do i need to set up the time capsule airport before i start backing up using time machine with my time capsule?

Some setup is generally required.. because the TC is a network device.. not a plug in via usb.. therefore it has to exist somewhere in your network.

  • I'm trying to decide between the time capsule & airport extreme. With either option, will i not have air play?

I'm trying to decide between the time capsule & airport extreme. With either option, will i not have air play? I have an IMAC, MACBOOK, 2 Apple TVs, 3 iPhones...

AIrplay to digital or analogue devices like speakers or hifi system is only available in Express. Or Apple TV.
The TC or Extreme will pass airplay protocol just fine to your ATV.
The Extreme and TC and now identical apart from the TC having an internal hard disk.

  • Flashing Amber when trying to set up new Time Capsule

Tearing my hair out here!  Have spent all evening trying to set up my new Time Capsule but keep getting to the point where I turn on Airport Utility and it says it can't find any AirPort wireless device!  Flashing amber as well...... have reset/ unplugged/replugged / reconnected every cable variation I can think of!  NOT a techie but have usually managed to attach other Apple devices no bother. HELP!!

The amber flashing can be anything. Trivial or major.. look up the error in the airport utility.
Another question - how do I check what is on TC i.e. what has been backed up?
Also I have to get a new HD fitted so am hoping that everything is saved ready for me to take computer into repair shop!
Check the TM display.. by default unless you excluded something, everything is backed up.
But I would strongly recommend you do a disk image as well.. you can do this via disk utility or use a tool like superduper which I think is still free download.
Restoring after a disk replacement is much harder than you think.
Please study Pondini FAQ so you actually understand what TM does and can do..

There is a lot of very helpful info although it is perhaps in need of another reorganise.

  • Time Capsule & AirPort Utility

I just purchased an AirPort Time Capsule.  I have Mac OS X v10.6.8.  When I tried setting it up, it told me I needed a newer version of AirPort Utility (I currently have v5.6.1).  When I tried to install the latest version, it told me it could not be installed because the software required OS X v10.7.5 or later.  The Setup Guide that came with my Time Capsule says I need Mac OS X v10.5.7 or later, which I do.  So now I'm wondering if I need to purchase Lion, so I can install the latest version of AirPort Utility, so I can setup my Time Capsule.

You cannot setup the TC without upgrading.. The v6 utility needs Lion at least.
The instructions are not clear.. you can use the TC with 10.5 OS but you cannot actually set it up.
You can also use iOS if you have a later one . v6 I think is required and download the airport utility.

  • Time Capsule, Airport Utility, and Snow Leopard???

My new iMac and Time Capsule are going to be delivered today, and I was wondering if it was necessary to use the Airport Utility CD that comes with the Time Capsule to set it up, or is there a more up to date Airport Utility as part of Snow Leopard?

    Welcome to the discussions, rhinoman7!
Chances are, the most recent version will already be installed on your new computer, but you can always check for any available updates once you have AirPort Utility open.
Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
I believe that the most recent version of AirPort Utility is 5.4.2
The CD is useful if you need to install Windows compatible programs for the devices.

  • Time Capsule - Airport Utility error 6742

I have just setup my Time Capsule everything seemed to go well during the setup. After setup I ran the Airport utility and received the following error message
"An error occured while trying to access the apple wireless device make sure that your network connection is valid and try again. error - 6742" I have uninstalled the Airport Utility and reinstalled but this did not help
I can access the internet through the TC so the connection is working but I cannot access the TC.

I'm having the exact same problem. Hope someone sorts this out!

  • After trying to set up access control, my Airport Utility is no longer able to find my Base Station.  My PC still sees my wireless network but I can't connect to it.

A friend told me he was able to access my network from a different device with no password so I decided to set up an access control.  Following the prompts, I entered my IP address, and then my Airport stopped working.  I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it, but got the same thing.  The screen I get is that "Airport Utility was unable to find any Airport wireless devices", and askes me if I want to rescan.  When I rescan I get the same message.  My Airport light is green and my PC recognizes the network, my software just can't connect to it.  A friend suggested I entered the wrong IP address (which I found on my computer under "connections", but even after I tried a different one which is supposed to be from the network, I still get the same error message.  What am I doing wrong?

A friend told me he was able to access my network from a different device with no password so I decided to set up an access control.
This could be bullsh!t on your friend's part perhaps? Do you ever recall seeing a blue-light on the base station?
Following the prompts, I entered my IP address, and then my Airport stopped working.
The acces control list is where you put in your Mac Address, this is not the same thing as an IP.

  • After hard reset of time capsule, airport utility cannot setup again. "an unexpected error occurred. try again"

After starting airport utility, it searches and i select my time capsule. AU grinds for a minute and comes back with "An unexpected error occured. Try again."

    Hi Philjp,
If you are having issues connecting to your Airport Time Capsule, even after a factory reset, you may find the following article helpful:

  • What are the correct Time Capsule Airport Utility Disk options?

During configuration of the Time Capsule what are the correct options/settins in the Airport Utility on the Disk tab?  Does File Sharing interfere with Server File Saring>

You can turn on file sharing.. it will not interfere with your server since it has a different IP address.
You can use either device password or disk password.. do not use the profiles as that complicates things.. and Apple did not build in a link to Server to use standard user login which is a great pity.. when you have an active directory type setup it .. the TC could have been made a lot more business like.. However apple really have the TC aimed at the domestic market and users without a server.
What are you intending to use the TC for?
Most people would be better buying an airport extreme rather than TC when they are running business setup.

  • HT1281 Time Capsule/Airport Utility "Archive" - is data transfer local?

I'm considering archiving my 4th gen Time Capsule - using Airport Utility - to a removable USB disk which will then be stored offsite.
In this scenario, is the data transfer directly between the Time Capsule and the USB disk, or is the archived data routed via the Mac that initiated the Archive operation? My Macs access the TC wirelessly, so the "via the Mac" transfer would take some considerable time ...
    thanks for your help
    Bill

If the USB disk is connected directly to the TC then the data does not transfer via the Mac - is that correct?
Yes, this is correct.. archive will backup direct.. it is the one and only backup method Apple provided.. and is not even available in v6 utility. But even though it is direct. it is slow as slow. And the TC HDD will be unavailable for the duration.
It is actually much faster to backup over ethernet.. from the TC to USB on the computer. There is no use using a faster drive as the read speed of the TC even over gigabit will still be the rate determining step.

  • When trying to set up my time machine I get this message:  Airport Utility was unable to find any airport wireless devices.  I am connected to the internet.  What's the problem?

I'm trying to set up my time capsule.  I'm having trouble. Please help

    Hi Angela,
Had (and having) the same issue from Windows 7 on my TimeCapsule (TC) ..... Not sure how to fix it but I have a workaround:
    1) Make sure you are getting your internet connectivity from the TC instead of your ISP's modem (turn off wifi on the ISP's modem)
    2) go to windows menu and type CMD on the search box, that should get you a black screen. Type IPCONFIG and note the numbers on the Gateway (mine is 192.168.1.1)
    3) Open Airport utility and go to File > Configure other
    4) Type the Gateway from step 2 and your TC password (if you didn't change it, it should be the serial number f your TC, found on the bottom sticker)
    5) you should be able to see yout TC settings.
Hope it helps. I had a big headache when setting TC on my Windows laptop.... (but none on my Macbook) :-)  Good luck!

  • How can I set up my time capsule as the primary base station with a centurylink router? I'm trying to extend my coverage, increase signal strength, and be able to connect a printer.

I recently moved and now I'm trying to set up my Time Capsule as the primary base station or router with an existing network that has a Centurylink modem/router. The TC still has the settings for my old network. I also have backups on it. I have the data backed up to another HD so it's not an issue to return it to factory settings if doing so deletes the back ups. Do I need to restore it to the factory settings to set it up? Also, what settings would I select on the TC (and the Centurylink modem/router) in order for the TC to serve as the router, instead of the Centurylink router? I want to be able to use the TC to back up my Mac's, print wirelessly, and improve overall performance. I tried setting the TC up and ended with 2 different networks. Can anyone please help me with this?

The TC has to plug into the existing modem router by ethernet.. you cannot use wireless.
You have a choice of which is router.. only if Centurylink agree to bridge their modem router.. this has to be done by the ISP and often they do not allow it.
Is your broadband cable or adsl or fibre or ???
If it is cable and you are allowed to purchase your own cable modem pick a pure modem version with no router in it.. plug the TC into it by ethernet.
Setup the TC in DHCP and NAT mode.. (depending on broadband type).
You must reset the TC to factory to do the setup.. no files are lost at all.
Here is my current recommended setup.. with Yosemite life has become harder than ever.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the laptop itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.
Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore
Start from the bottom and work up.. I have a list of good network practice changes but I have avoided Yosemites bug heaven.
This user has had success and a few others as well.
