Trying to set up new AirPort  Express to stream music

I just purchased Airport Express in order to use our home stereo system with our iTunes located on another computer. I am not techie at all but usually can follow the directions with no problem! It looked like all I had to do was plug the AirPort Express into the wall and hook the line out port to my speakers and it would pick up my wireless network. Well nothing has happened. I have read all the info in the discussion board but cannot find one that is exactly my problem. When I open AirPort Utility on my main computer it says it does not detect any AirPort wireless device. I have a cisco linksys router. All my other computers in the house work fine on this router so I know this is working. Do I need to purchase a AirPort Extreme?
Can anyone help me with very simple instructions as to what I need to do to get this to work?
Thank you.

Hello Shookie43. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
By default, the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) will perform as a wireless router. Which is not exactly what you would want in this situation. I am assuming that you want to use the other wireless router for Internet access and only use the AXn for iTunes streaming ... correct?
If correct, then the following would be the basic steps to configure the AXn to do so:
Either connect to the AXn's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AXn, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Network Name: <enter the Network Name or select the existing wireless network from the drop-down menu>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
Music
o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
In iTunes:
iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

how do i set up iPad and airport express to stream music to stereo without using internet connection.

Your 4th gen iPad does have the necessary software to connect to the AirPort Express but not to administer it. To do the later, you would need to install the AirPort Utility applet.
You said that your iPad can "see" the AirPort's wireless network, but can't connect. What happens exactly when you attempt to do so? Do any of your other wireless devices have any trouble connecting to the Express? Did you configure the Express for a closed network ... that is, not to broadcast its Network Name?

  • Using old Airport Express with new Airport Extreme to stream music

I recently purchased the newest Airport Extreme to replace my older Airport Express. I'm running OS 10.8.5. I like the speed of the new WIFI signal for streaming to Apple TV. No long waits or buffering interruptions while watching movies. I still want to use the old Airport Express to stream music from my iPhone to a stereo in another part of the house. I plugged in the Express module and it just flashes amber. Doesn't show up in Airport Utility either.

I suggest that you first perform a "factory default" reset on your old AirPort Express, and then, check out the following Apple Support article for configuring it for streaming.

  • How to set-up new Airport Express to extend range of Airport Extreme

Purchased a new Airport Express to use it as a range extender on existing home network with an operating Airport Extreme base station. While I've read instructions, I'm unclear whether the Express needs to be connected by ethernet cable for its initial setup, or can I simply plug it and initialize it wirelessly onto the same household network? (I've tried the latter but without success).

    to edex67 and Bob Timmons:
My objective is to extend the wireless range of the Airport Extreme base station wirelessly - so I do appreciate that the Airport Express would needsto be located haflway between the base station and the "dead zone" area.
The suggestion of using a Powerline ethernet connection to the Airport Express has merit (especially as I have one available).
I continue to use OSX 10.6.8 - does this affect my set-up in any way?
My problem had been - and remains - how to configure the Airport Express in range extend mode - I did click these boxes on both the Extreme base station and the Express, however the Express still has flashing amber lights and error codes - one indicating no internet availability on the Airport Express.

  • Using my Actiontec modem's wifi, it doesn't find my new airport express.  When I use the new airport express network I created error message says ip address is wrong.  Help setting this new airport express up

Using my Actiontec modem's wifi, it doesn't find my new airport express.  Using the new airport express network I just set up it says the ip address is invalid.  What can I do to overcome this blinking amber light and error messages?

You need to begin by configuring the AEX to Join an existing network (Bridge Mode.) You can then connect to it using Wi-Fi, but the AEX will not extend your existing network.
If you can connect the AEX to your existing router using Ethernet, then you could use it to Create a new network. Otherwise, if you want to extend your existing network you will need to get a Wireless Access Point - WAP - from a non-Apple product like D-Link.

  • Can't set up new Airport Express

My old Airport Express dies so I buy a new one. I use the Airport just for connecting to my stereo for itunes etc. Plug it in right by the computer and get the flashing amber light. Go to the set up assistant and choose 'Set up a new Airport Base Station' and get the message 'No new Airport networks were found'.
I also have a separate Netgear network to connect with my laptop. This set up is connected to the cable box then to the computer via ethernet. No problem with this.
The problem seems to be that the old and/or new Airport Express station does not connect with the Airport Extreme card in the computer. At least it seems the computer doesn't see the Airport Express even though it is right in front of the computer. When airport is on the icon shows strong broadcast signal.
    Anyone have a clue?

Thanks for suggestion - but. Connecting direct via ethernet gives exactly the same results. Computer doesn't see Express therefore there is nothing to configure. I am at a total loss and about to give up. Maybe there is another product that would be compatible with Mac that I could try. I guess it is also possible that the new unit is also bad.
I have a love/hate relationship with computers and right now the hate side is taking over. I hate it when things don't work.

  • New AirPort Express Mac iTunes Music Streaming Issues

    Hello All,
I purchased the "new" AirPort Express today from the Apple store and set it up as a client to my existing wireless network to stream music to some speakers via the phono cable.  I am running a Linksys E3200 Dual-Band Wireless N Router connected to Comcast via a Motorola SB6121 DOCSIS 3.0 modem.  I can stream music just fine from two iPhones and a Windows 7 64 bit PC (with iTunes), but can't via my Late 2011 MacBook Pro running Lion and iTunes 10.6.3.  I also tried another Late 2008 Uni-Body MacBook running Lion and iTunes 10.6.1, which also doesn't work correctly.  The MacBooks will connect successfully via iTunes to AirPlay, but the music skips about every 1-2 seconds.
I've rebooted all pieces of the network (including the MacBooks) and still no sucess.  Called into Apple Support and the tech requested I split off my WiFi networks to a 2.4 GHz and a 5 GHz networks via different SSIDs.  We connected both the MacBooks and factory reset then reconnected the AirPort to the "new" 5 GHz network.  Same issues as we saw before.  Moved the AirPort into the same room as the wireless router (maybe 5-10 feet away) and still same issues.  Apple tier two wasn't real sure, but I don't blame her since she said she didn't get to order her new AirPort until last night.  They're bumping the ticket to engineering to see what they say... but wanted to see if anyone has found a fix for it.
    Thanks!
    Jeff

It went all the way up the chain with Apple to engineering and they had to setup the AirPort as a standalone router.  The music played without issue from my PC, iPhone and Mac.  Upon resetting it backup as an AirPlay client it does the same skipping problem on just the Mac (however AirFoil works just fine on the same Mac).  The response I got from engineering this afternoon was-
    "Jeff,
I heard back from Engineering today. Their advice is: Since this issue only occurs when the Airport Express is connected to your Linksys router, our best advice is to update the Linksys router firmware (contact Linksys) or use a different wireless router.
I apologize for all this inconvenience.
Thank you for calling AppleCare and have a great day!"
Not exactly the reply I was looking for...

  • How do I resolve error 10057 when trying to set up my airport express to extend the range of my wireless network

I have a Dell XPS running on Windows 7 and use an AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi to get wireless internet access for other laptops in the home. I want to connect an AirPort Express 802.11n into the network to wirelessly extend the range of my wireless network. I have installed the AirPort Utility but when I attempt to connect to the AirPort Express, it gives me an error code 10057 and says I should check the internet connection. I have tried resetting the TCP/IP settings on my PC but that did not fix the issue. The Airport Express is also flashing yellow rather than solid green. Has anyone found a fix for this issue?

This sounds as if you have an older AirPort Express that is no longer supported by the newer Mavericks operating system.
To check and see if  that might be the case, locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. It will start with an "A" followed by four numbers. Hard to see in the faint print.....so you may need reading glasses or a magnifying class to see the model number clearly.
Model numbers A1084 and A1088 of the AirPort Express are no longer supported by AirPort Utility in Mavericks.
You will need to use a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC to be able to administer the older AirPort Express.

  • Issue setting up new Airport Express on OS 10.8 and Airport Utility 6

My network is a lastest model Airport Extreme and computers running 10.8 Mountain Lion. I needed to extend my wireless network so I purchased the newer model Airport Express.
Using Airport Utility 6, I followed the screen prompts to extend the network and get 99% complete (screen prompts find the network to extend, join the network, and then begin to apply configurations to the Airport Express). It is during this last stage the configuration of the Airport Express fails, the light starts blinking amber and I get an "unreckognized error" in Airport Utility. No further information. I tried soft reset and factory resets on the Airport Express several times with the same result.
I have another computer still running 10.7 Lion and Airport Utility 5.6 and after another reset, figured I'd give it a try. I was able to connect to the Airport Express, configure it to extend the network, save the configuration and the status light turned green on the first try.
Not sure what's going on with OS X 10.8 and Airport Utility 6 but maybe this will help someone else get their network up and running.

The first AirPort Express was introduced only nine years ago, not thirteen, but nevertheless, that's pretty old. Mountain Lion has features that will not work with an Express that old.
Nevertheless, it remains a perfectly functional device and still does everything it ever did. Use the technique described in this thread: I can't install airport utility 5.6

  • Simplest way to connect my laptop to the airport express to stream music

what would be the simplest way to connect my airport express and my macbook so i can listen to the music i have on itunes on my stereo? Would it affect my purchased band with if i do it thru my wireless modem? can it be done without using cables? Too many questions, thanks!!

Configure Express via AirPort Utility to Join your existing wireless network. Plug the Express into an outlet near your stereo and plug the audio out from the Express into your stereo. You need a 3.5mm plug or optical cable to whatever is available on your stereo.
Would it affect my purchased band with if i do it thru my wireless modem?
Affect your wireless bandwidth? Yes, but it's still the most efficient way to stream. Affect your internet bandwidth? No.

    Yes.

  • Airport Express stopped playing music and iMac doesn't see it

I had set up an Airport Express to stream music from my iMac to my stereo.  Worked well for a day or two then stopped.  I tried to re-establish the connection but Airport Utility doesn't even see the Express any more.  I tried the reset button on the bottom of the Express but that made no difference.  When I plug in the Express the green light shows briefly, then steady amber for a few seconds followed by flashing amber.  The Express is within range of my network but to make sure I tried plugging it in to an outlet a few feet from my router.  Airport Utility still didn't see it.  Is my Express toast or am I missing something?  Oh, yeah, I'm using a Belkin router but that didn't seem to be a problem when it all was working.
    Appreciate any help.

    Hi Lowell,
I spent some more time with this last night and was able to get back up and running, albeit with some oddities.
I had previously tried a reset with the AX unplugged.  I finally realized how silly that was and did another reset with the unit powered on and right next to the iMac.  After some hesitation, it was seen and recognized.  I was then able to set it up in the livingroom, connected to the stereo.  For some reason, when I first tried that after the reset, the iMac once again didn't see it.  I brought it back to the desk, did another hard reset and set it up all over again.  This time it worked although I can't for the life of me figure out what I did differently.
    Oddities:
When I first reset it, the AX went from solid to flashing amber.  When I got it playing with the stereo, no light at all showed.  When I got up this morning, the unit was showing a steady green light.  I don't know what that's about.
While it plays strong and true much of the time, there are dropouts.  Sometimes these last only a second or two but other times can last for up to a minute, with some raggedness upon re-establishing the connection.  Do you know of any way to overcome that?
    Thanks for the help.
    Michael

  • Quick question - Setting up an XP desktop to stream music through AE?

    Hi,
This might be a silly question, but I'm slightly confused about how to set up the Airport Express to stream music to my sound system.
I am buying a desktop (win XP) which I connect via ethernet cable to my existing wireless router (D-Link). Does the desktop need to have a wireless card built-in as well in order to be able to stream music to the Airport Express? Or can the desktop stream via the cable-connected router?
    Many thanks in advance,
    // Martin

    Martin
I connect a wired XP box to my Airport Express, it is
actually connected to my Airport Extreme Base Station
    via ethernet.
I did nothing special other than setting up my
network to include my Express, and then the option to
stream to it was there in iTunes.
    Will
    Hi Will,
Thanks for your reply. So, if I understand correctly, your XP has no wifi-card and is connected to the Extreme with a wire. Through the Extreme you then stream wireless to the Express?
    Cheers,

  • Setting up Air play with new time capsule and newer airport express?

I just recently purchased a new time capsule, and I'd like to use my current generation airport express to stream music from my apple devices. I just was wondering what I had to do in airport utility to set this up?  I was also wondering how to transition the network over from the old express to the new time capsule as far  software settings go. I really appreciate the help and assistance. Thanks folks. I'm really looking forward to setting up the network for our new iMac.

    Your setup is very easy..
This is how I would do it.
Remove the express from the network.. ie just unplug it but do not change anything in it. Keep the configuration as is until the TC is working.
Power off the cable modem.. this is requirement.. at least 20min is usually needed, dependining on your ISP.
Go into the airport utility and setup the TC as router for your network .. it is a simple setup.. but I would do as stated.. all short names, no spaces pure alphanumeric rather than accept Apple's names. That is for TC and wireless.
After 20min power up the cable modem.  Once it is running and you have internet access. you can proceed to setup the express to do the airplay. If the internet still doesn't work, power off the cable modem overnight..
Do not lose that express setup so if you absolutely have to, you can at any time substitute it back and have internet again.
So everything is working properly TC in place as full router.. now hard reset the express.. and simply use the airport utility to put it in extend wireless .. or plug in by ethernet if you are going to hard wire it.
The extend wireless setup is all done straight from the existing setup.
Now you can plug your express audio port into your speaker.. and setup the airplay via the itunes.
I will get Bob to give you his way of doing it.. There is no one RIGHT way .. but he can give you more info if you want a particular method.

  • Can't do Factory Reset on New Airport Express

I just tried to install a new Airport Express today on my existing network (Wired to a port on my Airport Extreme). The new Airport Express shows up in the Airport Utility on my Macbook, but no matter what I do (manual or continue) it hangs for about a minute while saying "Reading the Airport Express configuration" and reports an error (-6753 "An error occurred while reading the configuration".
As a side note, which I can't seem to talk to the Airport Express, I have no problem getting to the Airport Extreme and doing whatever I want using the Airport Utility.
I decided to do a Factory Reset to get things back to the beginning. I followed the instructions (unplugged, held reset button, plugged back in, waited while holding the button). At no point did it flash green four times. Instead after about 10 seconds it started blinking yellow rapidly (sounds like the hard reset which is done with power on).
All the Airport Utility comes up with is the Name, IP Address, Version (a revision behind at 7.3.1), and Airport ID. It also shows the icon for the device with a yellow indicator.
Ultimately I'd like to use this device to get better network coverage upstairs -- possibly as a 5 GHz-only port, and then set the Airport Extreme to 2.4 GHz-only.
Any ideas why I can't do a factory reset?
About all the Airport Utility comes up with is the IP, MAC and firmware revision
All I know about this new APexpress is that it is one rev behind on Firmware (7.3.1) but it doesn't want to update.

It appears that the Factory Reset mode simply DOES NOT WORK.
By attaching directly to the APExpress via a ethernet cable (direct, no switch, so nothing else there), and by turning off WiFi on my MacBook, I was able to discover and connect to the APExpress. I changed from extend network to join network, and udpated, then was presented with a green LED. I thought things were working, so I removed the ethernet cable and tried connection by WiFI again, but still the APE would NOT show up.
So I did another direct connect with WiFi turned off. I turned the radio off in the APE as well and was able to connect to it and update the firmware to 7.3.2. Finally I turned the radio back on, and told it to form its own network.
In this mode I am back to getting the flashing yellow LED, and I still can't see the APextreme.
So it looks like either I have a bad APE, or there is some firmware bug between it and the Airport Utility. In any event, after I first connected to the APE via WiFi, fresh out of the box, I was never able to connect again in a way that would allow me to actually configure the product. I've only been able to do this via the ethernet connection and WiFi off.
And, of course, the Factory Reset simply DOES NOT WORK, so I have no way to put it back to the way it was when I first opened the box yesterday.
I'm hoping someone has a solution for this, but beginning to doubt it.
