Trying to share library at a new location without wifi but with lots of gear.

Hi all,
I have just arrived at a beach house for a holiday. I am trying to watch some TV shows (iTunes downloads, stored on my macbook air) on the big screen here. I have the following equipment:
Macbook air with TV shows I want to watch (brand new, not my usual computer, and not the computer that I currently sync my ipad and iphone too)
iPad air 2
iPhone 6
HDMI cable
HDMI to ipad/iphone adaptor
Apple TV but no remote (damnit)
I dont have any adaptors for the mini-display port on the macbook air. There is no WiFi here. I haven't been able to get the apple TV to 'see' any of my devices as its not on its usual network.
Only option that I have identified is to sync my ipad to my new macbook (and use the iPad-HDMI cable), but I think that will erase the existing library on my ipad, which i don't want to do. I tried creating an adhoc network, which allowed my iPad to see my macbook library (and the TV shows i want to watch), but although I could see them, I could not play them on the iPad. I don't understand why that would happen.
Any suggestions?

Thanks Winston,
My ipad is connected to the net, but how do I connect to apple?
I've setup a hotspot with the ipad (it has SIM card) and connected my macbook to it. on the ipad I can see my macbook library, but still when I try to watch a video i can't. Each epsidoe of my TV series is a grey box with the outline of a TV inside it. Tapping it does nothing.
Any further suggestions on how to 'connect to Apple to verify the account'?
Thanks and regards,
Stuart

  • How to Move My Library to a New Location

The title is a bit misleading.  This is actually related to a previous discussion I started but never got any feedback on.
    Here is the situation:
    I have iTunes Match.
For whatever reason, my iTunes library got hopelessly muddled and confused.  Probably user error.
I decided to move the library to a new location (different external hard drive).
I completely uninstalled iTunes and all Apple software from pc.  (yes, i have a mac but easier to keep this on the desktop).
I reinstalled iTunes, but something is still there, because my library immediately showed up.  I turned off iTunes Match, updated the preferences to point to the new location and turned iTunes Match back on.
iTunes does not "see" my new library location, and tells me that all music is only in the cloud.
How can I make it re-scan the hard drive and recognize that the music is all there?
The big problem this causes is that, as I add music, it's impossible to tell what is really physically there and what needs to be downloaded.
Thanks for any suggestions or help.  Perhaps I need to uninstall in a more thorough way, if so, I welcome help with that.

    Thanks Cander.
I've been syncing my iPod this way since I first got my 3Gen iPod a few years ago (i'm on my 4th ipod) - and I know they've made improvements to iTunes.
Is there a better way to achieve what I wanna do with just 1 computer?
Is there a way to manage 2 or 3 iPods on 1 computer using seperate "itl" or "xml" files for each iPod's library?
As it is now, I still have to go to My wife's computer and "add files or folders" to her library to get the newest tracks to add to her library - and over the network, it could take a full day If I did the whole library. Instead I write down what I've added on my Mac and just go through on her computer and add those folders.
I've read some things about holding down a "shift" or "command" key to select a library on iTunes startup... (part of my discovery on how I F-ed up my library when moving it in the first place)
Would this be the way to achieve that?
Can I have 3 seperate data files that manage the preferred tracks for 3 different iPods?
Would I have to update all 3 data files or would they all stay current when I added tracks?
    EDITED - well wait...!

  • Possible to rebuild iPhoto Library in a new location?

I have managed (between multiple updates of iPhoto over the years) to wind up with a lot of duplicate photos in my iPhoto Library folder. What I'd like to do is have iPhoto rebuild it's library in a new location, so as to eliminate anything in that folder than iPhoto's not using. I'm guessing I have at least 1GB of duplicates (not counting the Modified folder).
For example, I have 2000 - 2005 folders at both the top level of the iPhoto Library, as well as in the Originals and Modified folders.
    Any way to do this?
    PowerBook 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Are the photos is those year/month/day folder duplicates of some already in the library? If so then just remove them to the desktop and launch iPhoto. (Make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library folder beforehand just in case).
If those files are not in the library then try rebuilding the library, launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library, and select the option to recover orphaned files. See if that won't clean up those rogue folders. But, if the photos in those folders are truly duplicates of those in the library, you can trash those folders. They are like our appendix, no longer needed.
The answer to your previous answer was no. Sorry I wasn't more specific. Rebuilds are done within the current iPhoto Library folder.

  • IPhoto 9.6: How to move your iPhoto library to a new location?

    Hello,
How do I move my iPhoto libraries from my system disk to a data only disk in iPhoto 9.6?
I followed the instructions on this support website titled " iPhoto 9.5: How to move your iPhoto library to a new location."
However, this only appears to have copied the libraries, not move them.
According to what I see in Finder, I now have the same library on two different disks, but that was not my intention.
    Thank you

So, delete the one from the unwanted location.
When you move data across volumes by default it is copied to the new location, afterwards you delete it from the previous location. It's a sensible protection against dataloss of anything goes wrong with the copy.

If ALL your music is on the iPod and it's ALL iTunes purchased content, you log into iTunes with your account on th enew machine and reverse sycn the music back.
If the music is from cd's and other sources (not iTunes files) then ask over at iLounge what third party solution currently works. (can't recommond it here)
I have some HUGE instructions here how to get your music off the old comptuer too:
    Recovery options:
    A: If Windows isn't booting:
You need to boot the computer from a "recovery disk or USB" that has a operating system on it and a graphical user interface to transfer files from your boot drive to a external drive.
I suggest using the Easy USB Installer to install Ubuntu 10.10 onto a 2-4 GB USB key.
    http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/
    or
burn a ISO of Ubuntu 10.10 or PartedMagic to a cd-r with ImgBurn or Win 7 right click and burn
You can use Disk Utility in OS X to select the ISO and burn to cd/dvd as well.
Once you have it installed, consult this page for your BIOS boot key to hold to get into the BIOS.
    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/a/biosaccess_pc.htm
Plug the USB into the back (if possible) of the computer, connect the external drive and enter the BIOS, set the USB (or CD) as first boot and SAVE.
Boot off the USB/CD and "Try Ubuntu/Run from disk" DON'T INSTALL. (Parted Magic loads into RAM and ejects CD)
Once in, go under the menu Places > Computer and transfer your files to the external drive just like you would in Windows, drag and drop.
(If using Parted Magic double click on the Mount Drive left icon twice, use the two GUI windows to transfer files to external drive, unmount drives, log out/quit in the lower left corner menu option)
B: If the computer hardware isn't working, but the drive might still work:
You'll have to remove the power cord and manually extract the hard drive. This might result in some damage.
There is a powered IDE/SATA to USB adapter for sale online for $20 that you can take that internal hard drive and use it like a external drive to access your files from another Windows machine.
C: If your iTunes content is deleted...
It might be recoverable if it hasn't been overwritten yet by fresh data. Undelete software works by reading the 1's and 0's of the files themselves, not what the OS says.
You need to use undelete software pre-installed before the iTunes content was deleted, or while on a bootable cd/USB and a external drive to transfer the recovered files.
You can also install undelete type software on a new machine and USE STEP B above to "undelete" the files and recover them directly to the new computer.
You can't install undelete software or recover files to the same drive your attempting to recover from or it overwrites the deleted data.
D: If the hard drive doesn't work and...
The data isn't worth spending $2000-$3000 in a ATTEMPT at platter dissection recovery, then your finished
If the data on the drive was encrypted, data recovery efforts may be futile, unless it's a encypted file and you transfer it successfuly and have the password to de-crypt it.
E: If you have a "iDevice" with any content
It can be synced back into iTunes, check at iLounge what third party software works reliably now and for your version.
(Once you log into your iTunes account, you can sync ONLY iTunes purchased content back from a iDevice)
Third party software can recover just about all the items on a iDevice, regardless of it's origin. (can't recommend such software here)
F: If any of the above is too hard, or the data is of "critical importance"
Then seek professional computer or forensic level recovery services.
Get help from someone who has done this sort of thing repeatly and can almost guaranty 100% results.
There is Linux software that can "rip" all data off a iOS device if that level of attention is needed, seek a professional service.
Hope this helps in your data recovery efforts.
Please, backup your data, it's the only thing us IT professionals can't recover.

I recently purchased FaceTime from the Application Store. After approx. ±10 meg, the application resets and starts downloading again. I have tried to download it at different times of the day but with the same results. I have been in contact with Apple support and have tried different options with the same result. I cannot download a new Version because in my Purchased List the applicaiton (FaceTime) is still there, and because I have halted it it tells me to resume. I can’t, because the same thing is going to happen. I have tried all the various troubleshooting tips supplied by my ISP and also Apple Support with no luck. I am currently working on a IMac OS 10.6.7. Has anybody got any ideas? Any suggestion would help. Thanks

Also there is no activity on unit when I use the remote. The unit is stuck on the first page itself where we have to choose the language. The unit seems to be fine to me but the real problem is remote does'nt have activity. The IR is not responding while pressing any of the button.
    Good luck with your appointment.
Not much consolation but even new products can have issues and might need a trip to a store to return/replace.
The reason i asked about the LED on the AppleTV is that occasionally it thinks it's paired with a specific remote and ignores others - the unpair keypress I described is quick and free.

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

  • How can I move my iTunes library to a new location?

At the moment, my iTunes library is split across two hard drives, (22gb roughly on each). This was mainly so that if one drive failed, I didn't lose all my music. Anyway, I now have two 1tb drives and I want to move the entire library into a centralised location on one drive. I tried following the steps in this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1364 but it was utterly useless (I have iTunes 10.4).
Right now, I have all my albums grouped into a folder called 'Albums' and for singles or albums where I only kept a few tracks I have the tracks organized into seperate folders according to genre. I want to keep this folder structure but have it in a centralised location instead of split across two disks. How can I do this?

Use Migration Assstant to move all content from an old computer to a new.
    For iTunes alone:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
Windows users see tip at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18879381
If you put it in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

No computer is fault free but Apple MBPs have a good track record.  In those cases where problems do arise, Apple has the best support in the industry.
A MBP with 4 GB RAM with the SSD storage should be adequate for your needs.

P.s. On Apple's site I found a refurbished late 2013 model of the MacBook Pro Retina 13 with all of the same specs as listed above (4GB, not 8GB), running OS X (doesn't say which one) but for a bit less than a brand new one. Is this the same model as what they're currently selling new in their store or did they just upgrade everything to match what is being offered in the current "new" model?
The latest MBP models came out in October 2013, so it will be the same, with the same warranty and telephone support.  The difference will be that the price will be less and it will be delivered in a plain white box.
I have purchased three MBPs from the refurbished section.  I have never been able to detect any cosmetic differences and will go that route again.

  • Trying to share library across 2 user, cant edit info on users though?

Ok, I have followed instructions to allow all users on my Mac to share the one iTunes music folder. I put the iTunes folder in the HD>Shared>Music folder.
I then added the library to the other use, and can see the music ok. However I click on get info to edit a song, and it wont let me change any info. I've checked the permission on the folder and it says user xx(me) has read and write access.
So why cant I edit it please?
Also this is what Im trying to do ultimately, add a song in either user and then who ever is logged on, can add a song and all users will see it in the iTunes library, also any changes (if I can get it too work!!) to the file info, album art etc, I want changed so all users get this update.
*update* just tried to add an album under my non admin account, and it said cant as dont have write access. But according to the info on the folder (click>get info) it shws (me) to have read and write access.
ive done a repair permissions if that was some issue, please please help
Please help, Im brand new to iMac (Xmas pressie) and always been a Windows user so be gentle!!
    thanks

    Hi Loc..
I share my music over 3 Macs..with 4 accounts on each, one for each member of the family..as long as all the itunes are open and they are all set to 'sharing' then everybody can see and play any music on any account on any mac, it shows up as 'shared music' in you itunes sidebar. If my son downloads or imports an album or a cd into his itunes then anyone can play it.
I've tried to keep all the music on the 20" dualcore which frees up memory on the G5 and ibook...it seams to work quite well.
Did a similar thing with iphoto and that works ok, only problem I have had with both setups is Leopards glitchy networking but i'm hoping that will settle down in time, it's still a bit new, I should have waited till 10.5.3 at least...but christmas got in the way..
    Hope this helps

  • Can I get my music from my library onto a new computer without having to sync anything?

I have tried using firewire and even manually moving it over. It said when I manually moved it over that it was all on the computer.....but when I turned it back on, it was not. Each time I try to sync stuff through firewire, it freezes. (The geniuses say that this is because my hard drive is about to fail) Any way I can find my itunes library online and download it or something?

I agree the term sync does somewhat give the wrong impression. I also know that most of us never really learn whether or not our backup strategies are good enough until we're called upon to use them in anger. Too often they fail.
A script is a program that hasn't been compiled into machine code but is instead interpreted at run time. There is less scope for a pretty front end but they can be just as functional. Mine tend to display one or more pop-up boxes to confirm that you want them to perform their task on the currently selected tracks, then if possible show a progress bar so you can see that they are working (and abort if needs be), and finally a summary screen shows what has been done. An advantage of distributing these programs as scripts is that others can repurpose them if they are so inclined.
If you copy your recovered media in to a new empty library then it won't have your playlists, ratings, playcounts etc. The two scripts I mention attempt to analyze all of the tracks in your library and on the device, and where a match can be found in the tag information (i.e. same name, track number, artist, album, etc.) the stats or playlist membership information are copied across.
Data copied to an iPod in disk mode can be copied back as is. Media copied over by iTunes however is given obscure filenames and placed in hidden folders. The aim is to prevent casual copying of media. Of course it is no barrier to the determined pirate, but that is the main drive behind the way things are set up.
For the future make sure you backup not just the media but the whole iTunes folder. The core of the library, holding ratings, play counts, playlists etc. is the iTunes Library.itl file. The user tip Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy suggests a way to efficiently backup the folder and then subsequent changes to it.
