Trying to software update to 7.1.1 and I get a -3001 network error

Anybody have any idea on how to resolve this problem? I am on my macbook, my quicksilver updated with no problems. I have tried deleted iphoto, reinstalling from cd and updating via software update again and still get the network error. Obviously I am online.

FWIW I believe it's much safer to download the various updaters from the Apple Downloads site and run them manually. I also save all of the updaters so I can reapply them if needed at any time, even if unable to get online.
Go to that page and find the iPhoto updater. It's on the second page I believe.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

It's likely that your backup is corrupt. Try deleting the backup, then right click on the name of the phone in iTunes and choose "back up". To delete go to iTunes Preferences, Devices tab. Highlight and delete the most recent backup. Note that sometimes deleting this way leaves some garbage around that can still interfere with a new backup, so you should verify that the backup folder is empty.

Trying to software update my macbook but after restart it freezes

I have a Macbook (the person i bought it from said he purchased it in 2010, its silver) its running on version 10.6 which is far too old, im having trouble downloading itunes to sync with my iphone 5. As i dont have the app store on my computer (no idea why) i cant download yosemite. ive tried a couple downloads but as soon as they have downloaded and i try to get it to work it says theres been an error. so i tried a software update, it started downloading something and then it restarts but once restarted it just goes back to my wallpaper (mac space wallpaper) with no top bar or anything just frozen on the wallpaper, i left it thinking it was normal but i was still frozen after nearly 12 hours. i eventually turned the computer off and it seems to be back to the way it was before i tried the software update.
if i could get any advice it would be much appreciated. thanks

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing iTunes again. Does the install go through properly now?
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

I am experiencing the exact same issue during the installtion process for iTunes 10.5.
I uninstalled all Apple components but when I attempted to uninstall the Apple Software Update I received the same message: "Fatal error during installtion." I was able to repair the Apple Software Update but still could not install iTunes 10.5 afterwards.

(1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):

(2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. When you change to the new router, did you re-run the CD to re-set the new SSID and password to the printer.
Otherwise your iPad will not be able "talk" to your printer.

I have no idea what may have caused your MacBook to stop working, but from your description it kind of sounds like it may have started before you ran Software Update and installed the new Apps. Just the general slow feeling and bugginess is what tips me off. You said that you weren't sure if you had closed all open windows, that doesn't matter if the computer restarts itself. It automatically closes all other open applications when restarting.
As to your data being retrievable, if when you take it in they do a fresh install of the OS, then no, it will not be unless you want to pay several thousand dollars to a software retrieval company.
I am glad to hear that you have taken into the Apple Store to get it fixed, and that you have all of your purchased music backed up to your iPod. You should be able to just transfer it all back to iTunes once you get your computer back should it be necessary.
As a side note, the proper place for this topic would probably in the MacBook forums, not iTunes since there is no evidence that iTunes started the issue.
