Trying to take what i like about amahi and do it with arch...

i tried installing amahi on an old piece of hardware and that didnt work out. so i did what i shoulda done from the start and put in arch, setting it up as a file/media server.
the goal is to elegantly share files and stream media (music, video, images) to any and every computer in my network. then maybe add little amahi type goodies in time. so far ssh, samba and xampp are running smoothly, and there is a 500gb external hard drive attached.
the server is headless and i want it to be accessible and controllable from any web browser in my local network. i am using webmin to administer it, and now i want to choose some kind of web based media streamer, i tried jinzora and had trouble loading it, mediatomb is cool but has an ugly web interface. i am thinking of going with the following web based applications:
-ampache or subsonic for media
-eyeOS to see if its useful for generally browsing my machine and maybe other stuff
-is it possible to have picasa be on that machine and work like web-albums?
-amahi does use dlna ... are there any recommended arch friendly dlna web-based clients? (this might be better than ampache/subsonic)
-currently i have xampp, would it be better to go with a traditional lamp setup?
any other ideas on what kind of cool things i can do with a home server?
i dont have it as my dns yet and i can't make it dynamic dns to the web because i live on a campus...but i am enjoying learning about servers and lamp and all of that...

I almost exclusively use my homeserver to stream media to my ps3. It is also set up as a bittorrent-server, but I don't use that functionality all that much.
I use mediatomb-svn and it works, but I'm keeping an eye out for coherence, because it looks like a promising project. I used it in the past, but at that time it didn't do transcoding. IIRC that functionality is basically available now, but I need some advanced settings for my ps3...
Bittorrent is set up with rtorrent and screen (although I'm quite sure you'll find webbased frontends for rtorrent)
Sharing folders is done with NFS.

As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):

To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another install. Does it go through this time?

The flashing folder means the computer is unable to find a valid boot disk. If you booted into the Recovery Drive using Command R and formatted the drive you must also download and install the operating system. Have you done that? If not, reboot using Command R and do so.

What I Like About SG 7.2

I'm coming from DaVinci Resolve; a new problem cropped up that I can't fix, and I was forced to try SG. It's always difficult to figure out a new workflow between applications, and the grading paradigm is very different than the one I'm used to in Resolve, but I find there's a lot to like here.
A little background. I tried SG CS6 a year and half ago or so, and I found it unusable. At the time I predicted that Adobe would drop SG and develop some sort of integration with Resolve. Evidently, I was mistaken, and it's a good thing, it seems.
Then a few months ago I got a three-year contract for a streaming series, and just out of curiosity I wanted to check out SG again, just to see where it was at, but I couldn't get it to launch. I had to create a new user on my Mac to make it work. Patrick told me 7.2 was coming out soon and would have a fix for my problem. That was going to be too late for me to deliver the first batch of episodes, so I went ahead and set up my project in Resolve.
Now, however, because Resolve has fritzed on me, I have to try SG. So here's what I like:
1. Of course, DL brings a non-linear aspect to the grading workflow, which is HUGE.
2. So far, Auto Color Match has worked very well with my footage, and does a great job speeding things up.
3. I like the color wheel controls, how it divides shadows, midtones, and highlights, with sliders to control the overlap. I do find the track ball controls from my panel to be far too coarse. Even setting the sensity to the minimum, barely touching the ball yields far too much adjustment -- I'd like to roll that ball a lot and get just a subtle response.
4. The color temperature adjustment is a welcome feature I've wished for in Resolve.
When I get time, I'll put in a couple of feature requests:
1. Ability to reduce track ball sensity by an additional order of magnitude or two.
2. Tear out the scopes into a separate window for dual screen application.
3. GPU acceleration to get faster visual feedback of grading adjustments.
4. Ability to add adjustment layers to dynamically linked timelines within SG.
5. Here's a big one: I need to be able to scale/zoom the timeline just as I do in PPro and After Effects.
I have a lot to learn in SG -- right now I have a deadline, so I'm just doing the most basic balancing and matching, but so far I see a lot of potential for SG. I just hope Adobe will soon address the core interface issues I mentioned above. These refinements are fundamentally necessary to make SG productive for professionals.

I use a Kensington "Expert Mouse" which is a trackball pad with 2" diameter ball, surrounded by a spinning ring, and four buttons. Poor man's grading tablet, you know ...
And yea, I hear you about the speed of the ball sensitivity when using the color-wheel things. Takes a LOT of spinning the spinner to adjust luma (which is good! makes subtle so easy to do) but ... while I might get a little more wiggle of my ball than you per change of color ... wow, it's not a lot. Have to be VERY careful moving that ball or the color flies out too far.
And yea, it's a PITA (though a small one) to have to remember to make ALL possible needed adjustment layers for Sg work while in P-Pro ... still seems awful weird, but ... workable.
The scopes ... PLEASE feel free to do wish-requests on scopes issues! Three of them are for some of us rather large ... first, you're right, being able to move the scopes somewhere else on screen ... or to another monitor ... would be wonderful. I'm still stuck on one screen and though in some circumstances one can double-screen Sg, there's still limits on scope usage/placement that I seen many wish for.
Second ... those stupid "dynamically scaling" wave-form, parade, and histograms. Who the HADES thinks those are a useful idea? Almost everybody shoots footage these days towards the "flat" side of the in-cam controls. So of course, one has to widen out the DR in post. In Sg's scopes, this is AWFUL. When you either lower the darks or raise the uppers ... it doesn't change the stuff shown, it SHRINKS the scale and the window of the scope. What the hell?
In my latest project, some blues were below zero in the histogram ... change them a little either by wheel or going into the sliders controls ... and ... it shows that I've say taken -40 to plus 5. Release the control ... no, it's not actually +5 ... it's + 27. It jumps AFTER letting go. So getting the dang thing to a specific value takes me 5-10 iterations as every time I change it ... it goes to something other than what it showed at while the control was active. Slows me down and SO irritating!
And finally, the vectorscope ... which has NO graticules at all. Zip, nada, nothing. You know the little boxes that show when a color off say a color chart is "in bounds"? Not there ... ever. You know the line that is oft referred to as the 'skin-tone' line? Not there either. I've never seen any other application with a vectorscope that DOESN'T include the standard graticules. Might as well have a histogram without a scale on it, you know?

Trying to capture what reports are being run and by what users

A few months ago, we upgraded to Discoverer 11g. One of the fixes I was hoping for was the updating of the query statistics table to see what reports are being run and who was running them.
The problem is that most users are running Discoverer Plus but they are not "gracefully" closing Discoverer Plus via File -> Exit. They simply hit ths "X" to close the window. Oracle says that when users do this, their statistics are not written to the query statistics tables. I am finding that the EUL workbooks that we have installed are pretty useless due to this and really the only reason I have left the query statistics logging to be enabled. I am now seriously considering disabling this as it is very inconsistent (we do trim the query statistics table on a rolling 180 days of history via concurrent program that deletes stats older than 180 days).
I am wondering if anyone here has done any logging of what workbooks are being run through some trigger? I see there is a EUL trigger function that we have in place, called post save documents, it records the workbook name, sql, etc. But it does not record the date that it was run. Has anyone modified this trigger so that every time a report is run it logs the report, sql, user and when it was being run to the table?
I have an Oracle SR open, I've asked this in a couple different ways but they keep coming back to a canned answer of "if the user does not do File -> Exit, it will not log their session to the statistics table... blah blah blah".
I hope I am making sense in what I am asking for.

I have never found the Discoverer stats to be very useful for some of the reasons you have given.
I don't see that an EUL trigger will do what you want as unfortunately there is no open document trigger. So to get any information you have to rely on the user saving the workbook.
One option you could explore is to use a DBMS_FGA (fine grained access) policy to audit some of the Discoverer query statements. For example, you can add a FGA policy to the EUL5_DOCUMENTS table that records all SELECTs on the table. That will show you which users are opening the workbooks you have in the EUL. Or you could add a policy to the views/tables used in the Discoverer workbooks and then audit the selects with an audit condition to audit only Discoverer sessions.
How you do it depends on exactly what you want to audit.

I recommend removing and reinstalling iTunes using these steps:
Check for .dll files
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.

OS X Updates
These are updates normally gained through the App Store that update the current OS version you have installed by one increment point at a time (in most cases)
As this is posted in Lion (OS X 10.7.x) it will increase the basic first release (OS X 10.7) to OS X 10.7.1
Later at the next release you will be advised by the app that there is another update and you get updated to OS X 10.7.2 when you run it.
If you ignore these single point updates or buy a computer that has been sitting in the store for some while you can get COMBO Updates which includes everything from the base version to the current release.
Updates are free.
Each sub version of the OS (OS X 10.0 through to OS X 10.8) has had differing amounts of incremental updates.
Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6.x) went to OS X 10.6.5 where as Leopard, which preceded it went to OS X 10.5.8
Certain Apps like iChat get their updates in some of the OS Updates. That is to say not every OS update includes an iChat Update but when iChat is updated it is in an OS Update.
Other Apple App such as Safari and iTunes tend to have their own Update schedules that are separate from the OS ones.
OS X Upgrades.
Upgrades are the ones that move OS X, lets say 10.4.x (Tiger) to the next named version OS X10.5.x (Leopard)
These Upgrades cost.
In the case of Lion and Mountain Lion that can be done though the App Store app these upgrades will be to the current updated level of the OS. In the case of Mountain Lion that is OS X 10.8.3 at the time of writing.
Timing
This is set in System Preferences > Software Update.
This triggers the App Store app to check on whichever frequency you have chosen.
Other apps
Lets say you download and Install Firefox as a browser.
This has a setting in it's Preferences that deals with Updates.
Other apps may have menu items that you can chose to "Check for Updates"

New MacBook came with too many ilife discs, what's this about? and back up?

I'm a new user, and not a computer conoseur.
So, I got my macBook with max os x and ilife , ofcourse.
Now, when I pre-ordered my mac from the Apple store, I got other applications with it, .mac, office student edition, apple care, etc.
So, when I went to pick it up, everything was in a bag ready to go. And besides all my added appliations packages, there were 3 iLife packages. ya know, the little CD size software boxes you can purchase for computers.
But, now learning that my iLife info is included in the 2 Mac OS x discs that my MacBook comes with, what are these 3 iLife packages all about? is it a mistake? All the iLife I'll ever need is already on my computer and on my 2 mac os x discs right?
and how do I start my 30 day trial iWork?
and if I want to custom install my iLife, to get rid of stuff (just learning about this from this discussion board), by MacBook guides tell me to Back up my essentials/files first. How do I do this? and is it necessary? do I have to Erase and install everything? can't I just erase some stuff, like extra languages. And if I erase some stuff, can I add it back on later? And is there any iLife applications on the discs, that don't come pre-installed with my MacBook?

Welcome to the discussions!
All Macs come with iLife pre-installed, so if you bought for an received 3 extra boxed copies you should return those for a refund.
If you do an erase and install you will still have a copy of everything that came with your Mac on your install disks. You will be able to reinstall all that if you want to.
If you want to do this out of the box, then you do not have any data or files to backup, so don't worry. A destination disk is simply the disk that you want that data to be backed up to.

Websites say cookies are blocked. I tried everthing in the help topic about his and nothing worked

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling firefox, clearing cache, everything. I don't know what else I can do. a few different sites say I have to enable cookies, but they are already enabled. This is a SERIOUS and URGENT problem. Please get back to me ASAP.

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
* Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
* Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
If clearing the cookies doesn't help then it is possible that the file cookies.sqlite that stores the cookies is corrupted.
Rename (or delete) cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete cookies.sqlite-journal and cookies.txt, if they exist, in the Firefox Profile Folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

You do not have to do anything.
They will automatic send to Apple for diagnostic.
It's not meant for consumers to read.
