Trying to transfer data to new imac using Pondini
Just bought a new iMac and I'm trying to use Pondini's instructions to transfer my old 10.5.8 data to Lion using Firewire.
On the new iMac, when I select Transfer from Another Mac, it doesn't give me a Firewire option. It only gives me a wireless option?

To use FireWire target disk mode
Make sure that the target computer is turned off.
If you are using an Apple portable computer such as a PowerBook or MacBook as the target computer, plug in its AC power adapter.
Use a FireWire cable to connect the target computer to a host computer. The host computer can be powered on.
Start up the target computer and immediately press and hold down the T key until the FireWire icon appears. The hard disk of the target computer should become available to the host computer and will likely appear on desktop. (If the target computer is running Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger, you can also open System Preferences, choose Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. Restart the computer and it will start up in Target Disk Mode.)
When you are finished copying files, locate the target computer's hard disk icon on the desktop of the host computer and drag it to the Trash or choose Eject (or Put Away) from the File menu.
Press the target computer's power button to turn it off.
Unplug the FireWire cable.

I have an imac that is a couple of years old but have just bought the new model. Could someone tell me the easiest way to transfer all my data across to the new computer and then how to blitz the old one to clean it all up and make it like new.

DavidIf your old iMac is Intel then the easiest solution is to use Migration Assistant. This option will be provided in the Setup Assistant that will run as soon as you start up the new iMac.
You can erase the hard drive on the old iMac and then do a fresh installation of OS X. -
Logicboard broken - how to transfer data to new iMac
Hey there!
About a month ago my MBPs logicboard died (Apple would replace it for 500€, but that's too much as I wanted a new iMac anyway), so I bought the new iMac and am NOW asking myself how to get access to my MBPs hdd. I guess I'll have to get it out of the MBP, but what next?

I'm trying to transfer data (docs, emails) from an old G4 iMac running OS 10.3.9 to brand new iMac on 10.8.1 I'm stuck, any help greatly appreciated. (Ethernet or wifi networking are both options if I can figure out how to get the machines to communicate.)

I don't understand why you're buying a Firewire adaptor, since AFAIK both of your computers have Firewire already built in.
All you need is a firewire cable. Connect the Firewire socket on the old machine to the Firewire socket on your new iMac.
Then start the old machine in Target Mode (i.e. by holding down the T key on its keyboard, while it's starting up, until you see the three-legged T icon hopping around the screen of the old machine.)
At that point you will also see a new icon on the screen of your new iMac. This is the hard drive of your old machine. By clicking on it you can navigate through it any way you like, just as you would normally.
Just drag across whatever you want from the old computer to the new one. This will leave everything on the old computer untouched.
- or use Migration Assistant but in my experience, Migration Assistant isn't very reliable and fails to migrate large amounts of stuff. -

You will need an external USB drive at least the same size as the one in your old computer.
Make a clone of your old computer's hard drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the old computer's startup drive.
Connect the drive to your new computer. You can transfer what you want using Migration Assistant. Just select the option for migrating from an external drive. -
I transferred about 400 gigs of data from my MacBook Pro to my new iMac using Migration Assistant, but can't find any of my data on Finder. I'm thinking that the data got transferred but not cataloged. Finder shows about 400 gigs of my hard drive being used, but the files it shows don't come anywhere close to 400 gigs. How can I find out what is really on the hard drive and how can I access my MacBook files I transferred?
I suggest that you start over, boot into Internet recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, erase and reformat the HD with one partition and GUID option, quit Disk Utility, restore the OS, and on first boot, use the Setup Assistant to migrate from the MacBook, following the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide. If that doesn't solve your problem, contact Apple's Support. If they recommend the same steps, I'd opt to return the machine and get another (you can do that the first 14 days you own it, no questions asked).

I currently have a Time capsule and a Pc with a Windows 7 operating system. Im trying to transfer data from my PC to my Time Capsule via ethernet cable because wirelessly takes too much time given that I have a lot of data to transfer. In my Airport Utility I already set my workgroup to "WORKGROUP" and the file sharing to "write and read", I also disconnected the Wifi on my Pc so the ethernet would work without confusions. But when I type my Time Capsule's Ip address in my windows Explorer it opens a page that says something like "this website is not available". Maybe I did something wrong while setting up the time capsule for file sharing. What are the correct steps for me to be able to transfer data from my PC to my time capsule via ethernet cable?I do not normally use a PC, but we have a guest here this week with a PC using Windows 7 which allows for some "testing" on the network.
What is the Ethernet connected IP address of the Time Capsule? Mine is 10.0.1.2
If we open Windows Explorer and type in
\\10.0.1.2
the Time Capsule drive is immediately seen on the PC once I enter the device password for the TC to connect.
I can also type in the name of the Time Capsule and things work the same way. My Time Capsule name is TC

brings up the same log in as the IP address method above
We have not tried mapping the drive, but might. Will post on results if we do that. -

Ok here is my question. I am not trying to transfer data to a different computer. What I want to do is transfer the user files (pics, music, documents) from one user to another.
What happened was my sister really messed up her user account putting things in every which direction. And the user account doesnt function very well. The user account cannot run some apps. Apps closes. I dont konw whats going on.
What I want to do is create a new user and transfer her data (pics, music and documents) to that new user and then ultimately deleted the corrupted user. How can I do this. Because I see that I cant access info of another user from within a current user.
Am I being clear or not really getting through correctly?you can copy what you need from the old user to a separate location which is accessible to all users like /Users/Shared. then log into the new user and copy them back to the new home directory. see this link on what to copy

Getting new iMac, use startup clone to clean drive?
I am trying to prepare for a new iMac, and wonder if I am able to use my CCC drive as startup drive and erase the Macintosh HD? I have the Time Machine on a separate drive and CCC on another drive. Is this recommended, if not would like to hear any other options.

DonYou have to remember that PPC applictions still worked under Snow Leopard, but haven't been supported since Lion, so you may have some issues if you have any of those.
Also, using Setup Assistant at the beginning of the setup of the new Mac is much easier as it will port over your user account. If you use Migration Assistant later, you will have already set up an account, so that will create a second one and you'll need to sort it out manually with the duplicate folders, etc.
And, you can use Time Machine for that, but I can't help with that as I choose not to use it at all. -
I have different icloud and iTunes id's and I want to do homesharing for all my devices. I'm trying to set up a new iMac but homesharing is not working. Should it be the itunes or iCloud id?
Welcome to the Apple Community.
Preferably your iTunes account, but it shouldn't really matter for getting homesharing turned on, as long as it's a valid ID. -
I'm trying to set up my new iPhone using iCloud - I entered my apple ID and password and selected the backup to restore from but the next page asks me to enter a password for a DIFFERENT apple ID
What different Apple ID? Yours? Your friends? Your dogs... ? I think we are going to need more information. You're probably best setting up the phone as a new phone and restoring from iCloud later on.

I am trying to stream music from my iMac using iTunes music files to my Cocktail Audio X10 music streamer. I have allowed my files to be shared the X10 sees the files but when I try to accsess them it gives me the message files not mounted. Please help?
No, I have the music I want to move from the laptop to the phone selected. Then I go under file, devices, and try to click sync but it is not available to click.
