Trying to transfer files
My MacBook Pro was recently in for service and had the logic board replaced. The external drive (a Western Digital 1TB, partitioned into two equal spaces) is where the Time Machine was, and it no longer recognizes it. I want to move that Time Machine file and start over. My problem is this:
The old Time Machine partition has about 300 GB of used space, all in the form of Time Machine backups (it is one file). The other partition is for extra file storage and has about 350 GB free. I am trying to move the Time Machine backup files on to the second partition and start the Time Machine over again. No matter what I do, I can't move the old Time Machine backup. It says it is copying, and I have let it go as long as three hours and it doesn't work, only puts an alias on the target partition and never transfers the files. On top of that, it doesn't let me quit the Copy process, no matter how many times I try to stop it. I don't have anywhere else that I can store the Time Machine's 300GB unless I put it onto DVDs and I do want to save it - although it is getting to be a nuisance to keep trying. Does anyone have an idea or a suggestion?
Thank you.
The USB drive might need to use a powered usb hub.. it also needs to be HFS+ formatted..
Let me suggest if the TC is no longer under warranty.. remove the hard drive and put it in a USB hard disk external drive box. These are cheap as, especially if you buy the bare wire version.

I am trying to transfer files between my ipad 3 and my macbook pro mid-2012 and they will just not connect. I connected them yesterday and it worked fine. And i can not air drop these files into my ipad it has to be done through itunes. And i can not afford to buy a new computer. How do i get these two to connect without having to buy a completely new computer?
Computer USB ports, regardless of the computer maker, have a relatively low power output and thus are not good chargers. They will charge but it takes a long time. You should be charging your iPad from wall power, or a more powerful source like an in-car charger.
Buying another computer will not change that. -
I backed up my old core 2 duo imac and and was trying to transfer files to my new 2011 imac and when i go to oppen a folder from what i transferred it says "The folder “Music” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents". Why cant i access the files from my old mac? I tried the time machine and that isnt working either. I have files that I need to use on my new mac, all my old programs and such. I thought they said it was easy to get your files from one mac to another. Please help.
Your account names are probably different on the two Macs. If you know the UNIX command line, open a terminal window and run:
$ id
You should see a line that starts with something like this:
uid=501(your_user_id_here)
now check the owner of the folder you copied over:
$ ls -ld Music
drwx------+ 8 some_user_id_here staff 272 May 14 16:08 Music
Do the IDs match? If not, you could change the ownership. Say your id is "johnsmith"
$ chown -R johnsmith Music
Now try and access it with iTunes. -

I am trying to transfer files from my old pc to my new mac. When I go to migration assistant, and hit the continue button on the introductory screen, I get a message that says M Asst wants to make changes - type your password to allow this. What is my password or how do I set one up for this?
When you set up your Mac you had to enter a admin password to set up your user account.
If you did not enter one then try using the "blank window" as your password. ie Just hit return with nothing entered.
If that does not work try this reference:

I am trying to transfer files from my MacBook (source) running OSX 10.7.5 to my IMAC (target) running OSX 10.9.1. Machines connected by ethernet cable. On Target machine I get "Looking for other sources" and on source machine I get "Looking for other computers". Both have clockwise spinning wheel.
Looking for advise.
Thanks
Luap NIf you are connecting the two computers directly to each other with an ethernet cable, you need a special "crossover" cable to swap the send/receive pins so the data sent from one computer arrives on the "receive" pins on the other end of the cable, not on the "send" pins that you get with a straight cable.
Incorrect, you do not need a special crossover cable. Any cable will do. -
I'm trying to transfer files from my windows surface tablet to my MAC? No double sided USB cords I've found match to the back of the MAC computer.
USB ports on the back of an iMac are standard type A USB.

New & frustrated Mac user - trying to transfer files PC to Mac must be easier than this? After unsuccessfully trying other suggested Help methods of transfering files from old PC to new MacBook Pro (eg iTunes files) tried Migration Assistant - when I press continue on PC, Migration Assistant shows message - error has occured in preparing data for transfer & quit buttion appears. I had already disabled anti virus software & run chkdsk.
Have you tried doing it the other way? Run Migration Assistant on the Mac? I haven't used a PC since 1995, so I can't help at all from the PC side.

A week ago I installed snow leopard on my girlfriend's macbook without backing anything up. Dumb idea I know. The installation failed multiple times. I ran her computer in target disc mode to try to save what files I could. Now when I try to transfer files it will freeze up at different times. Sometimes I can transfer a huge amount of data like 4GB's and the other times it locks up trying to transfer 4kB's. I'm at my wits end trying to figure this out. I can see the files but can not transfer them.
Any suggestions or past similar past experiences?Hi Anand,
Have you noticed when you plug the drive in whether its making any sounds? You can put your ear up to the drive on the Macbook. Its located on the right hand front sided of the top case.
Also, check to see if the target disk mode icon is moving after a few minutes. If the firewire icon has stopped moving it usually indicates that theres something seriously wrong (probably mechanical) with the drive.
Id definitely give Disk Warrior a try. Especially if you have a situation where you can hear the drive running or spin up but it doesn't make any sound after that. Hope this helps. -
I am trying to transfer my HD files from my Panasonic AVCCAM to Final Cut Pro X. What are the proper set up settings to get Final Cut to read the camera?

Hello I have a MacBook Pro laptop that doesn't boot and stops at the Apple logo in grey.
I ready about Target Mode and wen't bought a Firewire cable, connected to another MacBook Pro but the hard drive doesn't show up on the Go/Computer or the Disk Utility either.
Also I noticed that when the MacBook Pro is in Target mode it shows the Firewire logo jumping around the screen but to the left of it also is something that looks like electrical/power symbol, don't know if that matters. I tried to plug in the target computer to power and nothing changes, then tried to leave it unpluged from power and plug in the power to host but nothing happens. Both are almost full power on battery.
Basically I need a way to get the files off. Thanks.See if the procedure here is any different from what you are already doing:

Trying to transfer files from os X computer to old ibook with os 9
I've been trying to download something from my new mac with os x to my os 9 ibook using a memory stick. I need to be able save something as a postscipt or pdf to transfer to my new mac so I can print it. But every time I try to transfer to the old ibook the application shows as a document rather than an app. I can't download it from adobe cause explorer on the os 9 mac doesn't display the page properly. When I try to go to print and save as file the finder needs my attention and says file will be moved to the trash since the post script printer spooler can't be found. This used to work on another os 9 machine I had but this one just won't let me save file as .ps. Any help is obviously greatly appreciated.
Frustrated non printing person.If the application (name.app) you are trying to transfer is an OS X application, it won't run on OS 9. What is the application you are trying to download from Adobe?
I switched to Mozilla for OS 9 & like it better than IE. It works on web pages that IE has problems with. Plus, Mozilla has a pop-up ad blocker & a password manager. Download Wamcom's Mozilla browser at:
http://wamcom.org/latest-131/
If you want to convert an OS 9 file to a PDF file, use PrintToPDF at http://www.jwwalker.com/pages/pdf.html Works just like PDF in OS X.

Trying to transfer file via Ethernet Cable - but failing. Why?
Hi,
Many thanks for your attention.
I am trying to transfer a small file from a MacBook Pro to a Mac.
What step am I missing?
1. Both Macs on. On both Macs, Airport is turned off.
2. A Crossover Ethernet Cable plugged into both Macs.
3. Under System Preferences/ File Sharing is turned On in both computers.
4. Don't know if this is necessary - but under System Preferences/ Security - Allow all Incoming Connections is checked.
5. On the computer that I want to receive the file:
Under Finder/ Go/ I select Connect To Server
6. Then I click the Browse option.
7. The 1st Computer's icon appears in a window.
8. I click on the icon.
9. For a few moments, it says - "Connecting - "
10. But then after a few moments - Connection always Fails.
Followed these steps via other Posts, but they must have neglected to mention a step I am missing.moonlightcaravan wrote:
Second, seeing "connecting" and connection failed is normal. You must click on "Connect As" in the Finder window and then enter the username and password for the admin account on the other computer. That should fix things.
Thanks for responding.
When does clicking on "Connect As" happen in the process above?
After step six? Seven?
After the connection has failed?
Is this the FInder window that shows the icon of the computer you want to copy the file from?
You should see "Connect As" in the Finder near the top right of the window as shown below:

How does one transfer Files from an old MacBook Pro to a new iMac?
10.5.3 is at least part of the problem. You need to apply the latest updates to that mac.
See How do I set up a new Mac from an old one, its backups, or a PC? Select the appropriate link and follow the instructions carefully.
