Trying to transfer from a VCR...

I have a vcr hooked up through ElGato eye TV 250 and have recorded clips to my harddrive. According to iMovie, it can accept any format. well, guess what...it doesn't. A quicktime error comes up...the error is as follows...
The file could not be imported: The file “Macintosh HD/Users/Documents/EyeTV Archive/Live Recording - 4/3/07 12_58 AM.eyetv” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -43
This doesn't look like being able to accept any format to me. The tutroial, from what i've seen, doesn't address recording from a VCR.
If anyone can help. it would be greatly appreciated. I have a ton of video to edit and create.

iM is a DV-editor, meant to import lossless from firewire connected miniDV devices, by using the same codec, 'dv'...
due to the underlying Quicktime engine, iM 'swallows' some other (audio, video, still) codecs.. but not 'any'... the QT error -43 let us guess, it is somekind of mpeg...
the suffix of your file, you're trying to import, 'xxx.eyetv', is telling us, it is a proprietary format of your converter device..
I'm not familiar with these products, afaik, they come with some software, which allow an 'export'... if that export allows diff. formats, choose 'dv-stream'... if 'mpeg(2)' is the only option, you need to convert that with additional software (mp2 plugin (Apple, 19$)+ Mpeg Steamclip (free, www.suqared5.com) ...

As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

Please can someone help me, my hard drive on my old computer is gone, we had a power surge and it blew and they told me that all my documents, pics and music is gone. Trying to transfer from time machine backup

I had a new hard drive installed on my system. When I booted up for the first time, it asked me if I wanted to transfer information from a source and I selected Time Machine. It then calculated the amount of information and after that was complete I pressed the transfer button. There is a message on my system that states "Transferring Information". Below it are two "finder faces" one pointing to the other. Then there is what looks like an activity bar below that.
This screen has been showing for over 5 hours. I am wondering if it is actually transferring the data, or if it is locked up (there is no activity showing on the screen).
Any suggestions?

your installation might be hung. actually the best way to transfer your data in this situation would be not using the option you are trying to use but instead doing full system restore from a TM backup. I would abort your current install and do that.
to do a full system restore boot from the install DVD, once past the language selection screen go to the Utilities menu at the top and select 'restore from backup". Follow the instructions. This will bring your system to the exact state saved on the TM.

Trying to transfer from hdr-xr520 in Final Cut - having difficulty...

I go into Log and Transfer... and I tried to drag and drop the MPEG Movie files from the camera and I get an error message: Invalid directory structure please choose a folder whose directory structure matches media...
I tried just dropping the footage onto the timeline and it dropped but it was full of wavy lines and the audio didn't drop with it...
I have no iddea where my settings should be or even if I have to change any settings... I just switched to this tyoe of camera from my old DV Tape camera and I'm having a heck of a time with it - I'm sure an answer might require more information but I don't even know what information to give you!

Clipwrap doesn't "recognize the format" - can't even convert it...
The squared5 Mpegstreamclip leaves lines in the footage even set at the highest quality...
My friend with the later version of Final Cut turned all the clips into .mov files for me which play fantastically individually in Quicktime HOWEVER when you drag those clips into Final Cut they somehow magically become 4:3 and all pinched in Final Cut!
I cannot see how an MPEG movie file from a camera just doesn't work when you drop it into the computer like a 20 dollar digital photo camera does when you capture a minute of footage on it! I'm now a 24 hours into this process of getting 10 minutes of footage off of a camera into Final Cut... completely rediculous that SONY and APPLE aren't on the same page in the first place...
Could some setting in the camera been off to record MPEG files that my entire MacBook Pro doesn't understand... iMovie doesn't take the footage either!

Migration assistant freezes when trying to transfer from 10.6.6 to 10.6.5

New Macbook pro came with older version of Snow leopard than the one I'm running. How can i use migration assistant- it always freezes and will not allow me to copy apps and settings. Can you still transfer on initial setup.

If you want to go back to 10.6.5, reinstall from your install/restore disc, followed by running the 10.6.5 COMBO update. Don't use the Migration Assistant.

You transfer using iTunes on your computer (or iCloud) as the intermediary.
Assuming your previous phone is an iPhone, sync it using iTunes. Then sync your new iPhone using the same iTunes.

I just bought an iMac, trying to transfer from my ibook pre intel 10.5.8 - how can i access my excel, word and other old apps?

I bought a new IMac and a new TIme Capsule. The old compter - pre Intel Ibook running 10.5.8 is in the process of backing up. I transfered my apps and find I cannot acces any of my MS Office data, or my Quicken. Lots of stuff I really need there. Gotta be a way to use my old apps, all this data can't just be gone. HELP!

The data should be fine. But you will need to upgrade the Apps to open the files. For example, MS Office 2004 does not run in the newer OS. You will need to upgrade to MS Office 2008, or later version. The new version will open the older files.

Help-Trying to transfer library from PC to Ipod then to new Ibook G4

I hope someone can offer a suggestion. I downloaded from "somewhere??" an outline of how to use the Nano as a hard drive - to copy the itunes folder over to it and also gave instructions for hen attaching to the new computer and moving the itunes folder over with all my music.
Made a couple of attempts till I seemed to get that part right but on my new mac when I open itunes none of the songs are in the library. When I check where the library supposedly retrieves its info from everything looks okay. I can open the itunes folder in My Music and the songs all appear to be there but for some unknown reason aren't showing up in itunes.
I was lucky I did not turn automatic updating back on so I still also have the songs in my ipod - as well they still also seem to be appearing in itunes on my PC.
Could this problem have anything to do with trying to transfer from a PC to a MAC??

Not strictly true. Any Windows formatted drive can be read and written to by a Mac without the need to reformat, but not vice versa. And anyway, the OP doesn't want to use the iPod between Windows and Mac, he has transferred his music onto the iBook and now wants to populate the library with it.
Two people have posted ways to do this already.

Contacts are designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service.
Pictures taken with the device are designed to regularly be copied off the device to a computer as would be done with any digital camera.
If you have failed to use the device as designed it may be too late to recovery anything.
Is the device regularly backed up to a computer via iTunes? If so, the most recent backup (when restored to a replacement iOS device) should contain all contacts and pictures as of when the backup was created.
